May the world, from Brahmā down to the pillar, be satisfied. Om, salutations and offerings to the ancestors. Om, salutations and offerings to the grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the great-grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the mothers. Om, salutations and offerings to the grandmothers. Om, salutations and offerings to the great-grandmothers. Om, salutations and offerings to the maternal grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the maternal great-grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the aged maternal great-grandfathers—may they be satisfied. May the lower, upper, and middle ancestors, those who are gentle, those who have gone, those who are righteous, protect us in the invocation of the ancestors. By reciting the lineage, the first handful is for the father. Om, our ancestors are Aṅgiras. Our ancestors are Atharvan and Bhṛgu. May we be in the good favor of those worthy of sacrifice; may we be blessed with auspiciousness and good mind. Om, may our gentle ancestors, the Agniṣvāttas, come by the divine paths to this sacrifice, delighting in the offerings, and may they bless us.
ओं ऊर्जं वहन्तीरमृतं घृतं पयः कीलालं परिस्नुतं स्वधा स्थ तर्पयत मे पितॄन् । ओं पितृभ्यः स्वधा नमः । ओं पितामहेभ्यः स्वधा नमः । ओं प्रपितामहेभ्यः स्वधान नमः । ओं मातामहेभ्यः स्वधा नमः । ओं प्रमातामहेभ्यः स्वधा नमः । ओं वृद्धप्रमातामहेभ्यः स्वधा नमः । पितामहस्यदृ । ओं अक्षन्पितरो अमीमदन्त पितरो अमी तृप्यन्तः पितरः शुं(स्व) धध्वं पिबेह पितरोऽपि वानत्रयांश्च विश्रयांश्च भवनपवित्रत्वा रथपति ते जातवेदाः स्वधाभिर्यज्ञं सुकृतं जुपस्व? । ओं णदुवाता ऋतायते मधु क्षरन्ति सिन्धवः । माध्वीर्नः सन्त्वोषधीर्मधुनक्तमुतोषसो मधुमत्पार्थिवं रजः । मधु द्यौरस्तु नः पिता मधु मान्नो वनस्पतिर्मधुभामस्तु सूर्यो माध्वीर्गावो भवन्तु नः ॥ १,२१५.
Om, carrying nourishment, immortality, clarified butter, milk, honey, and sprinkled offerings, you are Svadhā—satisfy my ancestors. Om, salutations and offerings to the ancestors. Om, salutations and offerings to the grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the great-grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the maternal grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the maternal great-grandfathers. Om, salutations and offerings to the aged maternal great-grandfathers. For the grandfather: Om, the ancestors have not perished, the ancestors are satisfied, the ancestors are drinking Svadhā, let them drink, let the ancestors be in the three worlds and in the pure realms, O charioteer, O Jātavedas, with Svadhā, perform the sacrifice well. Om, the winds move according to truth, the rivers flow with honey, may the herbs be sweet for us, may the nights be sweet, may the earthly realm be sweet, may the sky be our father, may the trees be sweet for us, may the sun be sweet for us, may the cows be sweet for us.
प्रपितामहस्याञ्जलिदानम् । ओं नमो वः पितरो रसाय नमो वः पितरः शुष्माय नमो वः पितरो जीवाय नमो वः पितरः स्वधायै नमो वः पितरो घोराय नमो वः पितरो मन्यवे । नमो वः पितरो गृहान्न पितरो दत्तः । नमो वः पितरो दध्मे तद्वः पितरो वासः । मातामहानां त्रिरञ्जलिदृ । ततो मात्रादीनान्दृ ॥ १,२१५.
Offering for the great-grandfather: Om, salutations to you, ancestors of essence; salutations to you, ancestors of strength; salutations to you, ancestors of life; salutations to you, ancestors of Svadhā; salutations to you, ancestors of terror; salutations to you, ancestors of wrath. Salutations to you, ancestors, from the houses, ancestors who are given. Salutations to you, ancestors, from the curds, ancestors who are clothed. For the maternal grandfathers, three handfuls. Then for the maternal relatives.
ये चास्माकं कुले जाता अपुत्रा गोत्रिणो मृताः । ते तृप्यन्तु मया दत्तं वस्त्रनिष्पीडनोदकम् ॥ १,२१५.
And those who were born in our lineage, who died childless, belonging to the family, may they be satisfied by the water squeezed from the cloth that I have given.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २१६ ब्रह्मोवाच । वैश्वदेवं प्रवक्ष्यामि होमलक्षणमुत्तमम् । प्रज्वाल्य चाग्निं पर्युक्ष्यओं क्रष्यादमग्निं प्रहिणोमि दूरं यमराज्यं गच्छतु रिप्रवाहः । इहैवायमितरो जातवेदा देवेभ्यो हव्यं वहतु प्रजानत् । ओं पावक वैश्वानर इदमासनं अरणीगर्भसंस्कृततेजोरूप महाब्रह्मन्मुहूर्तास्त्रिषु वैश्वानरं प्रतिबोधयामि । ओं वैश्वानरे न उभयं आप्रयातु परावतः अग्निर्न स्वद्युतीरूपपृष्ठो दिवि पृष्ठोऽश्वि पृथिव्यां पृष्ठा विवेवा ओषधीचाविवेश वैश्वानरः सहसा पृष्ठोऽग्निः नमो दिव्य स षष्ठां नक्तम् ॥ १,२१६.
Brahmā said: I will now explain the excellent characteristics of the Vaiśvadeva rite. After kindling the fire and sprinkling it, 'Om, I send the fire far away; let the stream of enemies go to the realm of Yama. May this Jātavedas remain here and carry the offering to the gods.' Om, O Pāvaka, Vaiśvānara, this is your seat, shaped by the womb of the fire-stick, radiant form, O great Brahman, at the three moments I awaken Vaiśvānara. Om, may Vaiśvānara reach both sides, may Agni, radiant on the back, in heaven, on the back of the horse, on earth, on the back, enter the herbs, Vaiśvānara, suddenly on the back, O Agni, salutations to the divine, may he be sixth at night.

Om, offering to Prajāpati. Om, offering to Soma. Om, offering to Bṛhaspati. Om, offering to Agni and Soma. Om, offering to Indra and Agni. Om, offering to Heaven and Earth. Om, offering to Indra. Om, offering to all the gods. Om, offering to Brahman. Om, offering to the waters. Om, offering to the herbs and trees. Om, offering to the planets. Om, offering to the divine deities. Om, offering to Indra. Om, offering to Indra's men. Om, offering to Yama. Om, offering to Yama's men. Om, offering to all beings who move in heaven. Om, offering to the earth and ancestors. Om, to those beings who wander, poor and suffering in the midst of the world, I give an offering desiring nourishment; may the lord of nourishment grant me nourishment. Om, may the lord of the outcastes grant nourishment to the outcastes and fallen ones.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २१७ ब्रह्मोवाच । अथ सन्ध्याविधं वक्ष्ये द्विजातीनां समासतः । अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा ॥ १,२१७.
Brahmā said: Now I will briefly explain the method of sandhyā (twilight worship) for the twice-born. Whether impure or pure, or in any state whatsoever,
यः स्मरेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः ॥ १,२१७.
He who remembers the lotus-eyed one becomes pure both outwardly and inwardly.
गायत्त्रीच्छन्दो विश्वामित्र ऋषिस्त्रिपात् । समुद्राः कुक्षिश्चन्द्रादित्यौ लोचनौ । अग्निर्मुखम् । विष्णुर्हृदयम् । ब्रह्मरुद्रौ शिरः । रुद्रः शिखा । उपनय ने विनियोगः । ओं भूः पादे । भुवः जानुति । स्वः हृदये । महः शिरसि । जनः शिखायाम् । तपः कण्ठे । सत्यं ललाटे । ओं हृदयाय नमः । ओं भूः शिरसे स्वाहा । ओं भुवः शिखायै वौषट् । ओं स्वः कवचाय हुं । ओं भूर्भुवः स्वः अस्त्राय फट् ॥ १,२१७.
The Gāyatrī meter, Viśvāmitra is the sage, it is tripartite. The oceans are the belly, the moon and sun are the eyes, Agni is the mouth, Viṣṇu is the heart, Brahmā and Rudra are the head, Rudra is the tuft. The application is for upanayana. Om, Bhūḥ on the feet, Bhuvaḥ on the knees, Svaḥ on the heart, Mahaḥ on the head, Janaḥ on the tuft, Tapaḥ on the throat, Satyaṃ on the forehead. Om, salutations to the heart. Om, Bhūḥ, Svāhā to the head. Om, Bhuvaḥ, Vauṣaṭ to the tuft. Om, Svaḥ, Huṃ to the armor. Om, Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ, Phaṭ to the weapon.
ओं भूः ओं भुवः ओं स्वः ओं महः ओं जनः ओं तपः ओं सत्यं तत्स्त्रिपदा । ओं आपो ज्योऽती रसोऽमृतं ब्रह्म भूर्भुवः स्वरोम् । ओं सूर्यश्चेत्यादि । ओं आपः पुनन्त्वित्यादि । ओं अग्निश्चेत्यादि ॥ १,२१७.
Om, Bhūḥ. Om, Bhuvaḥ. Om, Svaḥ. Om, Mahaḥ. Om, Janaḥ. Om, Tapaḥ. Om, Satyaṃ—these are the three steps. Om, water, light, essence, immortality, Brahman, Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ, Om. Om, Sūrya, etc. Om, may the waters purify, etc. Om, Agni, etc.
ओं आयातु वरदे देवि ! पूर्वाह्ने ब्रह्मदेवता । गायत्त्री नाम या सन्ध्या रक्ताङ्गी रक्तवाससा । वरहंससमारूढा श्रीमत्पुष्करसंस्थिता ॥ १,२१७.
Om, may the boon-giving goddess arrive! In the morning, the deity is Brahma. The Sandhya called Gayatri, whose limbs are red and who wears red garments, rides upon a great swan and is established at the sacred Pushkara.
कमण्डलुधरा शान्ता अक्षमालाविधारिणी । आयातु वरदा देवी मध्याह्ने श्वेतरूपिणी ॥ १,२१७.
She holds a water-pot, is peaceful, and bears a rosary. May the boon-giving goddess arrive at midday, appearing in white form.
माहेश्वरी च सावित्री शुक्लवस्त्रादिमण्डिता । वृषस्कन्धसमारूढा त्रिशूलवरधारिणी ॥ १,२१७.
Maheshvari and Savitri, adorned with white garments, ride upon the back of a bull and hold the trident and boons.
आयातु वरदा देवी अपराह्ने सरस्वती । अतसीकुसुमप्रख्या वैष्णवी गरुडासना ॥ १,२१७.
May the boon-giving goddess Sarasvati arrive in the afternoon, resembling the blossom of the flax flower, Vaishnavi seated upon Garuda.
पीतवस्त्रा शङ्खचक्रगदापद्मसमन्विता । श्वेतवर्णा समुद्दिष्टा रविमण्डलसंस्थिता ॥ १,२१७.
Clad in yellow garments, bearing the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, she is described as white in complexion and established in the orb of the sun.
श्वेतपद्मसनासीना श्वेतपुष्पोपशोभिता । ओं आपो हिष्ठा मयो भुवस्ता न उर्जे दधात नः ॥ १,२१७.
Seated upon a white lotus, adorned with white flowers, Om: 'May the waters come, may they bring delight, may they nourish us with strength.'
महेरणाय चक्षुसे । ओं यो वः शिवतमो रसः । तस्य भाजयेतेह नः । अशतीरिव मातरः । ओं तस्मा अरङ्गमाम वो यस्य क्षयाय जिन्वथ । आपो जन यथा च नः । ओं सुमित्रिया न आप ओषधयः सन्तु ओं दुर्मित्रियास्तस्मै सन्तु योऽस्मान् द्वेष्टि यञ्च वयं द्विष्मः । ओं द्रुपदादिवमुमुचानः स्विन्नः स्नातो मलादिव । पूतं पवित्रेणेवाज्यमापः शुन्धन्तु मैनसः । ओं ऋतं च सत्यं चाभीद्धात्तपसोऽध्यजायत । ततोरात्र्यजायत । ततः समुद्रोर्ऽणवः समुद्रादर्णवादधिसंवत्सरो अजायत । अहौरात्राणि विदधद्विश्वस्य मिषतो वशी । सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ धाता यथापूर्वमकल्पयत् । दिवं च पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षमथो स्वः ॥ १,२१७.
For the vision of Maherana, Om: 'The most auspicious essence among you, may you share it with us here, like mothers with their offspring.' Om: 'Therefore, we approach you, for whom you strive for increase. Waters, grant us progeny.' Om: 'May the waters and herbs be favorable to us, may they be unfavorable to those who hate us and whom we hate.' Om: 'Just as sweat and dirt are washed away, may the waters purify our minds as clarified butter is purified by a purifier.' Om: 'Truth and reality emerged from austerity; from that, night was born; then the ocean arose; from the ocean, the year was born; the day and night were arranged, governing all that moves and is still. The creator fashioned the sun and moon as before, and also heaven, earth, the atmosphere, and the higher worlds.'
गायत्त्र्या विश्वामित्र ऋषिर्गायत्त्रीछन्दः । सविता देवता जपे विनियोगः । ओं उदुत्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः । दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यम् । ओं चित्रं देवानामुदगादनीकं चक्षुर्मित्रस्य वरुणस्याग्नेः । आप्रा द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च । ओं तच्चक्षर्देवहितं पुरस्ताच्छुक्रमुच्चरत् । पश्येम शरदः शतं जीवेम शरदः शतम् । शृणुयाम शरदः शतम् । ओं विश्वतश्चक्षुरुत विश्वतोमुखोविश्वतो बाहुरुत विश्वतस्पात् । संबाहुभ्यां धमति संपत्रैद्यार्वाभूमी जनयन्देव एकः । देवा गातुविदो नाङ्गविद्वानाद्भमितमनसस्पत इमं देवयज्ञं स्वाहा वातेधाः जपेत् ॥ १,२१७.
Gayatri: Vishvamitra is the seer, Gayatri is the meter, Savita is the deity; this is the assignment for recitation. Om: 'The rays carry the god, Jatavedas, for all to see, the sun.' Om: 'The splendid face of the gods has arisen, the eye of Mitra, Varuna, and Agni. Heaven, earth, and the atmosphere are reached; the sun is the soul of all that moves and stands.' Om: 'That divine eye, shining, rises before us. May we see a hundred autumns, may we live a hundred autumns, may we hear a hundred autumns.' Om: 'The eye sees everywhere, the face is everywhere, the arms are everywhere, the feet are everywhere. With both arms, he sustains and protects, generating the earth; the one god creates all.' The gods know the path, but the ignorant do not; let the lord of the mind accept this offering. Recite the mantra with 'svaha.'
उत्तरे शिखरे जाते भूम्यां पर्वतवासिनी । ब्रह्मणा समनुज्ञाता गच्छ देवि ! यथासुखम् ॥ १,२१७.
Born on the northern peak, dwelling upon the earth as a mountain, permitted by Brahma, depart, goddess, as you please.
thumb|पार्वणश्राद्ध. श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २१८ ब्रह्मोवाच । व्यास ! श्राद्धमहं वक्ष्ये भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं नृणाम् । पूर्वं निमन्त्रयेद्विप्रान्विशेषाद्ब्रह्मचारिणः ॥ १,२१८.
Brahma said: Vyasa, I will explain the rite of Shraddha, which grants both enjoyment and liberation to men. First, one should invite Brahmins, especially those who are celibate.
प्रदक्षिणोपवीतेन देवान्वामोपवीतिना । पितॄन्निमन्त्रयेत्पादौ क्षालयेद्वाक्यमन्त्रतः ॥ १,२१८.
With the sacred thread worn to the right, one should invite the gods, and with the thread to the left, invite the ancestors; then wash their feet with mantra and words.
ओं स्वागतं भवद्भिरिति प्रश्रः । ओं सुस्वागतामिति तैरुक्ते ओं विश्वेभ्यो देवेभ्य एतत्पादोदकमर्घ्यं स्वाहेति देवब्राह्मणपादयोर्देवतीर्थेनाभुग्नकुशसहितजलदानम् ॥ १,२१८.
Om, 'Welcome to you,' is said respectfully. When they reply, 'We are well received,' then, 'For all the gods, this foot-water is arghya, svaha,' offering water mixed with sacred grass to the feet of the Brahmins as a divine offering.
ततो दक्षिणा भिमुखेन वामोपवीतेनामुकगोत्रेभ्यो अस्मत्पितृपितामहप्रपितामहेभ्यो यथानामशर्मभ्य एतत्पादोदकमर्घ्यं स्वधेति पित्रादिब्राह्मणपादयोः पितृतीर्थेन आभुग्नकुशकुसुमसहितजलदानम् ॥ १,२१८.
Then, facing south, with the thread to the left, for those of the respective gotras—our ancestors, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers—by their names and surnames, 'This foot-water is arghya, svadha,' offering water mixed with sacred grass and flowers to the feet of the Brahmins as an ancestral offering.
एवं मातामहादिभ्यः । एतदाचमनीयं स्वाहा स्वधेति ब्राह्मणहस्ते एषवोर्ऽघ्य इति ब्राह्मणहस्ते पुष्पदानम् ॥ १,२१८.
Likewise, for maternal ancestors and others, 'This is for sipping, svaha, svadha,' placing arghya in the hands of the Brahmins, and offering flowers in their hands.
ओं सिद्धमिदमासनमिह सिद्धमित्यभिधाय ओं भूः ओं भुवः ओं स्वः ओं महः ओं जनः ओं तपः ओं सत्यमिति सप्तव्याहृतिभिः पूर्वमुखन्देवब्राह्मणोपवेशनम् । उत्तरदिङ्मुखंपितृब्राह्मयोणोपवेशनम् । ओं देवताभ्यः पितृभ्यश्च महायोगिभ्य एव च । नमः स्वधायै स्वाहायै नित्यमेव भवन्तुते इति त्रिर्जपेत् ॥ १,२१८.
Om, 'This seat is prepared, here it is prepared,' then recite: Om Bhuh, Om Bhuvah, Om Svah, Om Mahah, Om Janah, Om Tapah, Om Satyam—these seven utterances—seating the divine Brahmins facing east, and the ancestral Brahmins facing north. Om, 'To the deities, ancestors, and great yogis, salutations to Svadha and Svaha, may they always be present,' recite this three times.
ओं अद्यास्मिन्देशे अमुकमासे अमुकराशिङ्गते सवितर्यमुकतिथावमुकगोत्राणामस्मत्पितृपितामहप्रपितामहानां यथानामशर्मणां विश्वेदेवपूर्वकन्दृश्राद्धं करिष्ये । ओं विश्वेभ्यो देवभ्यः स्वाहा ओं विश्वेदेवानावाहयिष्ये । आवाहयेत्युक्ते ओं विश्वेदेवाः स आगत शृणुतामिमं हवम् । एदं बर्हिर्निषीदत ओं विश्वेदेवाः शृणुतेमं इवं मे ये अन्तरिक्षे य उपद्यविष्ट । ये अग्निजिह्वा उत वा यजत्रा आसद्यास्मिन्बर्हिषि मादयध्वम् । ओं ओषधयः संवदन्ते सोमेन सह राज्ञा । यस्मै कृणोति ब्राह्मणस्तं राजन्पारयामसि । ओं आगच्छन्तु महाभागा विश्वेदेवा महाबलाः । ये अत्र विहिताः श्राद्धे सावधाना भवन्तु ते । ओं अपहतासुरा रक्षांसि वेदिषद इति त्रित्रिर्यवविकिरणम् ॥ १,२१८.
Om, 'Today, in this place, in this month, in this constellation, at this time, for these gotras—our ancestors, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers—by their names and surnames, I will perform the Shraddha, beginning with the universal gods.' Om, 'To all the gods, svaha.' Om, 'I will invoke the universal gods.' When 'invoke' is said, Om, 'O universal gods, come, listen to this offering. Sit upon this sacred grass. O universal gods, listen to me, those in the atmosphere, those who are above, those who are fit for sacrifice, rejoice upon this sacred grass.' Om, 'The herbs converse with Soma, the king. For whom the Brahmin acts, O king, we deliver him.' Om, 'Let the mighty universal gods come, those appointed for Shraddha, let them be attentive.' Om, 'Let the demons and evil spirits be driven away from the altar,' then scatter barley three times.
ओं पात्रमहं करिष्ये । ओं करुष्वेत्यनुज्ञातः कृत्वा पात्रे पवित्रनिषेवणम् ॥ १,२१८.
Om, 'I will prepare the vessel.' Om, 'Do so,' having been permitted, purify the vessel with a purifier.
ओं शन्नो देवीरभिष्टय आपो भवन्तु पीतये । शंयोरभिस्त्रवन्तु न इति पात्रे जलदानम् । ओं यवोऽसि यवयास्मद्वेषो यवयारातीरिति यवदानम् । गन्धद्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्यपुष्टां करीषिणीम् । ईश्वरीं सर्वभूतानां ता (त्वा) मिहोपह्वये श्रियमिति गन्धदानम् । ओं या दिव्या आपः पयसा संबभूवुर्या अन्तरिक्षौत पार्थवीर्याः । हिरण्यवर्णा यज्ञियास्तान आपः शिवाः शं स्योना सुहवा भवन्तु । एषोर्ऽघो नम इति ब्राह्मणहस्ते जलं दत्त्वानेनैव पात्रेण पवित्रग्रहणं कृत्वा संस्त्रवं पवित्रं च ब्राह्मणपार्श्वे दद्यात् । ततः प्रथमपात्रे संस्त्रवजलं संस्थाप्य कुशोपरि ऊर्ध्वमुखं स्थापनं कुर्यत् । तदुपरि कुशदानम् ॥ १,२१८.
Om, 'May the divine waters be auspicious for drinking, may they flow favorably for us,' thus offer water in the vessel. Om, 'You are barley, remove our hostility, remove our enmity,' thus offer barley. 'She who is fragrant, invincible, ever-nourishing, the ruler of all beings, I invoke you here, O Shri,' thus offer fragrance. Om, 'Those divine waters, born of milk, those in the atmosphere and on earth, golden-hued, fit for sacrifice, may those auspicious waters be favorable and gracious.' 'This is arghya, salutations,' offering water into the hands of the Brahmin, then purify the vessel with the same water, and place the purifier and strainer beside the Brahmin. Then, place the strained water in the first vessel, set it upright upon sacred grass, and place sacred grass upon it.
