उपवीती बद्धशिखः सम्यगाचम्य वाग्यतः । उरुं राजेत्यृचा तोयमुपस्थाय प्रदक्षिणम् ॥ १,२१४.
Wearing the sacred thread properly, with the hair tuft bound, having performed proper sipping of water and observing silence, one should approach the water, recite the 'Uruṃ rājet' verse, and circumambulate it.
आवर्तयेत्तदुदकं ये ते शतमितित्र्यृचा ॥ १,२१४.
One should recite the 'Ye te śatam' verse while revolving the water.
ओं उरुं हि राजा वरुणश्चकार सूर्याय पन्थानमन्वेत वा । प्रतिधाता च वक्तारस्ताहृदयाविपश्चित् । नमोऽग्न्यरुणाया भिष्टुतोवरुणस्य पाशः । वरुणाय नमः ॥ १,२१४.
Om. The king Varuṇa made the broad path for the sun; the guardians and speakers, wise at heart, follow it. Salutation to Agni and Aruṇa, praised; may the noose of Varuṇa be loosened. Salutation to Varuṇa.
ओं ये ते शतं वरुणये सहस्रं यज्ञियाः पाशा वितता महान्तः । तेभिर्नो अद्य सवितोत विष्णुर्विश्वे मुञ्चन्तु मरुतः स्वर्काः स्वाहा । सुमित्रियान इत्यबञ्जलिमाकृत्योत्तरेण तोयं पश्चाद्विराज्य चैव विनिः क्षिपेत् । ओं सुमित्रिया न आप ओषधयः सन्तु । दुर्मित्रियास्तस्मै सन्तु योऽस्मान्द्वेष्टि यञ्च वयं द्विष्मः ॥ १,२१४.
Om. O Varuṇa, your hundreds and thousands of sacrificial nooses are spread wide and great; may Savitṛ, Viṣṇu, all the Maruts, and the shining gods release us today with these. Svāhā. Having joined the hands in reverence, one should pour water to the north and then to the west. Om. May the waters and herbs be friendly to us; may they be unfriendly to him who hates us, and to whom we are hostile.
पादौ कटिं चैव पूर्वं मृद्भिस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः । प्रक्षाल्य हस्ता वाचम्य नमस्कृत्य जलं ततः ॥ १,२१४.
First, wash the feet and waist three times each with clay, then wash the hands, sip water, offer obeisance, and then take the water.
ओं इदं विष्णुर्विचक्रमे त्रेधा निधे पदं समूढमस्य पांसुरे । महाव्याहृतिभिः पश्चादाचामेत्प्रयतोऽपि सन् ॥ १,२१४.
Om. Viṣṇu has traversed this universe; his three steps are set in the dust. Afterwards, with the great vyāhṛtis, one should sip water, remaining pure.
मार्जयेद्वै मृदाङ्गानि इदं विष्णुरिति त्वृचा । भास्कराभिमुखो मज्जेदापो अस्मानितित्यृचा ॥ १,२१४.
One should cleanse the limbs with clay, reciting 'Idaṃ Viṣṇuriti', and, facing the sun, immerse oneself in water, reciting 'Āpo asmāniti'.
ओं आपो अस्मान्मातरः शुन्धयन्तु घृतेन नो घृतष्वः पुनन्तु । विश्वं हि रिप्रं प्रवहन्ति देवीरुदिदाभ्यः शुचिरापूत एमि ॥ १,२१४.
Om. May the waters, our mothers, purify us; may they cleanse us with ghee and make us pure as ghee. The divine waters carry away all defilement; I enter the pure, purified waters.
ततोऽवृघृष्य पात्राणि निमज्योन्मज्य वै शनैः । गोमयेन विलिप्याथ मानस्तोक इत्यृचा ॥ १,२१४.
Then, without touching, one should gently immerse and lift the vessels, smear them with cow-dung, and recite the 'Mānastoka' verse.
ओं मानस्तोके तनये मा न आयुषि मा नो गोषु मा नो अश्वेषु रीरिषः । मा नो वीरान्रुद्रभामिनोऽबधीर्हविष्मन्तः सदमित्वा हवामहे ॥ १,२१४.
Om. May we not suffer loss in our children, in our lifespan, in our cows, or in our horses; may Rudra not harm our heroic men. We ever invoke you, O bearer of oblations.
ततोऽभिषिञ्चेन्मन्त्रैस्तु वरुणैस्तु यथाक्रमम् । इमंमे वरुणे द्वाभ्यां त्वन्नः सत्वन्न इत्यपि ॥ १,२१४.
Then, one should sprinkle with mantras, especially those to Varuṇa, in order: 'Imaṃ me Varuṇe dvābhyām', and also 'Tvannaḥ satvanna'.
आपो त्वन्तुमसीति च मुञ्चन्त्ववभृतेति च । ओं इमंमे वरुण श्रुधीहवमद्या च मृडयत्वा मवस्युराचके ॥ १,२१४.
Recite 'Āpo tvantumasīti' and 'Muñcantvavabhṛta', and then: 'Om. O Varuṇa, hear my invocation; today, be gracious and grant me relief, as I seek your favor.'
ओं तत्त्वयामि ब्रह्मणा वन्दमानस्तदाशास्ते यजमानो हविर्भिः । अहेडमानो वरुणेह बोध्युरुशं समान आयुः प्रमोषीः । ओं त्वन्नो अग्ने वरुणस्य विद्वान्देवस्य हेडो अवयासिसीष्ठाः । यजिष्ठो वह्नितमः शोशुचानो विश्वा द्वेषांसिप्रमुमुग्ध्यस्मत्स्वाहा । ओं स त्वन्नो अग्नेवमो भवती नेदिष्ठो अस्या उषसोव्युष्टौ । अवयक्ष्वनो वरुणं रराणो वीहिमृडीकं सुहवो न एधि । ओं आपो नौषधि हिंसार्धम्नो राजस्ततो वरुणो नोमुञ्चा यदाहरघ्न्या इति वरुणेति शपार्महे ततो वरुण नो मुञ्च । ओं उदुत्तमं वरुण पाशमस्मदवाधमं विमध्यमंश्रथाय । अथावयमादित्यव्रते तवानागसो अदितये स्याम । मुञ्चन्तुमामप्यथाद्वरुणस्य त्वत् । अहो यमस्य पत्नीमानः सर्वस्मादेव किल्बिषात् । अवभृथनिचं पुनर्विचेरुसि नित्यं प्रन्नः । अवदेवैर्देवकृता मनोयासि समवत्यै कृतं पुष्पाच्छा देवधीमल्पाही ॥ १,२१४.
Om. With this, I approach you, O Brahman, with reverence; the sacrificer seeks you with offerings. Without anger, O Varuṇa, be present here; grant us a long, unbroken life. Om. O Agni, knowing Varuṇa's will, remove the anger of the god from us. Most worshipful, shining one, release us from all hatred. Svāhā. Om. May you, Agni, be thus for us, nearest at the dawn's breaking. Seeking Varuṇa, may I win his favor; be gracious, well-invoked. Om. May the waters, herbs, and the king not harm us; then, O Varuṇa, release us when the day is done. Thus, we invoke Varuṇa, saying: 'Release us, O Varuṇa.' Om. O Varuṇa, loosen from us your highest, lowest, and middlemost noose. Then, O son of Aditi, may we be sinless in your vow. Release us, and also from Varuṇa's bonds. May we not suffer the wrath of Yama's wife; may we be freed from all sin. Having bathed, one should always move about with pure food. May the mind, made by the gods, be pure, and may the wise be adorned with flowers.
अभिषिच्य तथात्मानं निमज्याचम्य वै पुनः । दर्भेण पाययेन्मन्त्रैरलिङ्गैः पावनैरिमैः ॥ १,२१४.
After sprinkling oneself thus, one should immerse, sip water again, and then sprinkle with darbha grass, reciting purifying mantras without explicit forms.
आपोहिष्ठेति तिसृभिरिदमापो हविष्मतीः । देवीराप इति द्वाभ्यां आपोदेवा इति त्र्यृचा ॥ १,२१४.
Recite the three verses beginning with 'Āpo hiṣṭha', then 'Idam āpo haviṣmatīḥ', two times 'Devīr āpaḥ', and three times 'Āpo devāḥ'.
द्रुपदादिव इति च शन्नो देवीरपां रसः । आपो देवो पावमान्यः पुनन्त्वाद्या ऋचो नव ॥ १,२१४.
Recite 'Drupadādiva', 'Śaṃ no devīr apāṃ rasaḥ', and 'Āpo devo pāvamānyaḥ punantu', making a total of nine verses.
चित्पतिर्मेति च शनैः प्लाव्यात्मनं समाहितः । हिरण्यवर्णा इति च पावमान्यस्तथा पराः ॥ १,२१४.
Then, with a concentrated mind, one should gradually immerse oneself, reciting 'citpatir' and 'hiraṇyavarṇā', as well as the other Pavamāna hymns.
तरत्सामा शुद्धवत्यः पवित्राणि च शक्तितः । वारुण्या बहवः पुण्याः शक्तितः संप्रयोजयेत् ॥ १,२१४.
He should recite the Taratsāma, the Śuddhavatī hymns, and the purifying mantras with power; also, many auspicious Vāruṇī mantras should be applied with power.
ओं कारेण व्याहृतिभिर्गायत्र्या च समन्वितः । आदावन्ते च कुर्वीत अभिषेकं यथाक्रमम् ॥ १,२१४.
With the syllable 'Om', the Vyāhṛtis, and the Gāyatrī joined, at the beginning and end, one should perform the ablution in the proper order.
जलमध्यस्थितस्यैव मार्जनं तु विधीयते । अन्तर्जले जपेन्मन्त्रं त्रिः कृत्वा चाघमर्षणम् ॥ १,२१४.
For one situated in the midst of water, purification is prescribed; within the water, one should recite the mantra and the Aghamarṣaṇa three times.
द्रुपदाद्यास्त्रिरावर्तेदयं गौरिति च त्र्यृचम् । अन्यांश्चैव तु मन्त्रान्वा स्मृतिदृष्टान्समाहितः ॥ १,२१४.
He should recite the Drupada and other hymns three times, as well as the 'ayaṃ gaur' verse, and, with concentration, other mantras seen in the Smṛtis.
सव्याहृतिं सप्रणवां गायत्रीं वा जपेद्बुधः आवर्तयेद्वा प्रणवं स्मरेद्वा विष्णमव्ययम् ॥ १,२१४.
The wise should recite the Gāyatrī with the Vyāhṛtis and the praṇava, or repeat the praṇava, or meditate upon the imperishable Viṣṇu.
विष्णोरायतनं त्वापः स एवाप्पतिरुच्यते । तस्यैवं तनवस्त्वेतास्तस्मात्तं ह्यप्सु संस्मरेत् ॥ १,२१४.
The waters are indeed the abode of Viṣṇu, and he is called the lord of waters; these are his forms, therefore one should remember him in the waters.
तद्विष्णोरिति मन्त्रेण निमज्याप्सु पुनः पुनः । गायत्त्री वैष्णवी ह्येषा विष्णोः संस्मरणाय वै ॥ १,२१४.
With the mantra 'tad viṣṇoḥ', one should immerse repeatedly in the waters; for this Gāyatrī is indeed Vaiṣṇavī, meant for remembering Viṣṇu.
ओं इदमापप्रवहता स्वं मलं क्षाललोहितम् । यथात्वहोत्रामृतं यच्च शोफे अभीषणम् ॥ १,२१४.
Om. May these waters carry away my impurity and blood, just as the morning oblation and what is fierce are cleansed.
स्नात्वैवं वाससी धौते अच्छिन्ने परिधाय च । प्रक्षाल्य च मृदाद्भिश्च हस्तौ प्रक्षाल्य वै तदा ॥ १,२१४.
Having bathed in this way, wearing washed and unsoiled garments, and after cleansing the hands with earth and water, one should proceed.
आचान्ते पुनाराचामेन्मन्त्रेण स्नानभोजने । द्रुपदां च त्रिरावर्त्य तथा चैवाघमर्षणम् ॥ १,२१४.
After sipping water, one should again perform ācāman with a mantra before bathing and eating, reciting the Drupada three times and likewise the Aghamarṣaṇa.
आचम्याप्लाव्य चात्मानं त्रिराचम्यशनेरसून् । अथोपतिष्टेदादित्यं मूर्ध्नि पुष्पान्विताञ्जलिः ॥ १,२१४.
Having sipped and sprinkled oneself, and sipped water three times, one should then, with hands joined and adorned with flowers, worship the Sun at the head.
प्रक्षिप्योदकमद्धूय उदुत्यं चित्रमित्यपि । तच्चक्षुर्देव इति च हंसः शुचिषदित्यपि ॥ १,२१४.
Sprinkling water and raising it up, one should recite 'udutyaṃ citram', 'taccakṣur deva', and 'haṃsaḥ śuciṣad'.
आपो मा तस्मादेनसः पावमानश्च मुञ्चतु इविष्मतो विमा आपोहविष्मानाविरासति । हविष्मान् देव असुरो हविष्मानस्तु सूर्यः । देवीरापो अपा पत्न्या यश्च ऊर्मिर्हविष्यः इन्द्रियवान्मादित्यन्तनः तं देवेभ्यो देवता दाभुशुक्रलेभ्यस्तेषां भागकर्षिवसिसमुद्रस्य दक्षिण्याग्रयासिमेनापोग्रर्भिरश्मतमोधोः । आपो देवी मधुमतीरगृह्णन्तु ह्यन्नती राजस्वतिलाः । याभिर्मित्रावरुणस्य सिञ्चयाभिरिन्द्रमनयत्यन्न वाती वद्रुपदां शन्नो देवी अपामसृग्द्वयसंसूर्ये सन्तं समाहितं अपांरसस्य यो रस्य यो गृह्णास्युत्तमम् । आपो देवीरुपसूर्य मधुमतीवयस्याय प्रजाभ्यः तासा मास्थानात्वर्जिहतामोषधयः सपिप्पलाः । पुनन्तु मा पितरः सौम्यासः पुनन्त्वनापि पिता सहसाः पवित्रेण गतायुषा । पुनन्तु मा पितामहाः पुनन्तु प्रपितामहाः । पवित्रेण गतायुषा विश्वमायुर्व्यश्रवैः । अग्न आयूंषि परसत्माचरोर्जमिषञ्च त्वचे वावस्वत्वच्छूनाम् । पुनन्तु मा देवजनाः पुनन्तु मनसा धियः । पुनन्तु विश्वा भूतानि जातवेदः ! पुनीहि मा । पवित्रेण पुनीहि मा शुक्रेण देव दीद्यत् । अग्ने क्रत्वा क्रतूंरनु । यत्ते पवित्रमर्चिष्यग्ने विततमन्तरा ब्रह्मा तेन पुनातु मा । पवमानः सुवर्जनः । पवित्रेण विचर्षणिः । यः पोता स पुनातु मा । उभाभ्यां देव सवितः । पवित्रेण सवेन च । इदं ब्रह्मपुनीमहे । वैश्वदेवीः पुनती देव्या गृभ्नास्यामिसावक्ष्यस्तान्नोवीत पूज्याः । तयामदन्तः सधमादेषु वयं स्याम पतयो रयीणाम् । चित्प तिर्मा पुनात्वच्छिद्रेण पवित्रेण सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः । तस्य ते पवित्रपूतस्य यत्कामः । प्रणितच्छकेयं देवो वाक्पतिर्मा सविता त्वच्छिद्रेण पवित्रेण सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः । तस्य ते पवित्रपते ! पवित्रपूतस्य चत्कामः । पुनस्तच्छकेयं द्युपतिं अयं गौः पृश्रिरक्रमीसदशशतं मातरं पुनः पितरञ्च प्रयस्मः । देवो मा सविता पुनात्वच्छिद्रेण पवित्रेण सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः । तस्य ते पवित्रपते पवित्रपूतस्य यत्कामः पुनातच्छकेयम्? । ओं तद्विष्णोः परमं पदं सदा पश्यन्ति सूरयः । दिवीव चक्षुराततम् ॥ १,२१४.
May the waters free me from sin; may Pavamāna release me. The waters, full of oblation, are manifest. The god, the Asura, and the Sun are all endowed with oblation. The divine waters, the wives of the waters, and the wave rich in oblation, endowed with strength, up to the end of the sun—may the gods and goddesses, the shining ones, take their share of the ocean's southernmost, foremost, and sharpest stream. May the divine, honeyed waters accept us, along with the grains and sesame. By which the friends Mitra and Varuṇa are sprinkled, by which Indra is led, and by which the Drupada is made, may the divine waters grant us double strength and a focused mind. Of the essence of the waters, of that essence, may you take the highest. O divine waters, approach the sun, honeyed, for the sake of offspring; may the plants and the pipal trees not abandon their place. May the gentle ancestors purify me, may the fathers who have gone before purify me with the sacred filter, may the grandfathers and great-grandfathers purify me, may the sacred filter purify all my life with the rays. O Agni, may you act for my life, for my strength, and for my skin. May the divine beings purify me, may the mind and intellect purify me, may all beings purify me, O Jātavedas, purify me! Purify me with the sacred filter, O shining god! O Agni, follow the resolve with resolve. With your shining filter, O Agni, spread within, may Brahman purify me with that. Pavamāna, the maker of good, with the sacred filter, the purifier—may he who is the purifier purify me. With both, O god Savitṛ, with the sacred filter and with the offering, we purify this Brahman. The Vaiśvadeva goddesses, the purifiers, may you accept us, O you who are to be honored. With that, may we, sitting together, be lords of wealth. May the lord of consciousness purify me with the unbroken sacred filter, with the rays of the sun. Whatever desire you have, purified by the filter, may the god Savitṛ, the lord of speech, purify me with the unbroken sacred filter, with the rays of the sun. Whatever desire you have, purified by the filter, may I attain that. This cow, speckled, has approached her mother and father a hundred times. May the god Savitṛ purify me with the unbroken sacred filter, with the rays of the sun. Whatever desire you have, purified by the filter, may I attain that. Om. That supreme abode of Viṣṇu the wise always behold, as if the eye were extended in heaven.
