द्वितीया च तृतीया च तदर्धा परिकीर्तिता । उपविष्टस्तु विण्मूत्रं कर्तुं यस्तु न विन्दति ॥ १,२१३.
The second and third portions are said to be half of that; if one seated cannot perform cleansing after urine or feces—
स कुर्यादर्धशौचं तु स्वस्य शौचस्य सर्वदा । दिवा शौचस्य रात्र्यर्धं यद्वा पादो विधीयते ॥ १,२१३.
He should perform half-cleansing for himself at all times; for daytime cleansing, half at night, or a quarter is prescribed.
स्वस्थस्य तु यथोद्दिष्टमार्तः कुर्याद्यथाबलम् । वसा शुक्रमसृङ्मज्जा लाला विण्मूत्रकर्णविट् ॥ १,२१३.
A healthy person should perform as prescribed, but one who is ill should do as much as he is able; the impurities are fat, semen, blood, marrow, saliva, feces, urine, earwax, and excrement.
श्लेष्माश्रदूषिका स्वेदो द्वादशैते नृणां मलाः । मन्येत यावता शुद्धिं तावच्छौचं समाचरेत् ॥ १,२१३.
Phlegm, nasal mucus, sweat—these twelve are the bodily impurities of humans; one should maintain cleanliness until these are removed.
प्रमाणं शौचसंख्याया नादिष्टैरवशिष्यते । शौचं तु द्विविधं प्रोक्तं बाह्यमाभ्यन्तरं तथा ॥ १,२१३.
The prescribed number of acts of purification is not to be exceeded by those not instructed; cleanliness is said to be of two kinds: external and internal.
मृज्जलाभ्यां स्मृतं बाह्यं भावशुद्धिरथान्तरम् । त्रिराचामेदपः पूर्वं द्विः प्रमृज्यात्ततो मुखम् ॥ १,२१३.
External purity is achieved by washing with earth and water; internal purity is by mental clarity. First, one should rinse the mouth three times with water, then wipe the mouth twice.
संमृज्याङ्गुष्ठमूलेन त्रिभिरास्यमुपस्पृशेत् । अङ्गुष्ठेन प्रदेशिन्या घ्राणं पश्चादनन्तरम् ॥ १,२१३.
After wiping, one should touch the mouth three times with the base of the thumb; then, with the thumb and forefinger, touch the nose in order.
अङ्गुष्ठानामिकाभ्यां च चक्षुः श्रोत्रे पुनः पुनः । कनिष्ठाङ्गष्ठयोर्नाभिं हृदयं तु तलेन वै ॥ १,२१३.
With the thumb and ring finger, touch the eyes and ears repeatedly; with the little finger and thumb, touch the navel, and with the palm, the heart.
सर्वाभिस्तु शिरः पश्चाद्बाहू चाग्रेण संस्पृशेत् । ऋचो यजूंषि सामानि त्रिः पठन्प्रीणयेत्क्रमात् ॥ १,२१३.
With all the fingers, touch the head, then the arms with the fingertips; reciting the Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas three times in order, one should offer reverence.
अथर्वाङ्गिरसौ पूर्वं द्विः प्रमार्ष्ट्यथ तन्सुखम् । इतिहासपुराणानि वेदाङ्गानि वेदाङ्गानि यथाक्रमम् ॥ १,२१३.
First, recite the Atharva and Āṅgiras hymns, then wipe twice for comfort; then, in order, the Itihāsas, Purāṇas, and the limbs of the Veda.
खं मुखे नासिके वायुं नेत्रे सूर्यं श्रुती (तीर्दि) दिशः । प्राणग्रन्थिमथो नाभिं ब्रह्माणं हृदये स्पृशेत् ॥ १,२१३.
Touch the sky at the mouth, air at the nose, the sun at the eyes, the directions at the ears; then, touch the life-knot at the navel, and Brahman at the heart.
रुद्रं मूर्ध्ना समालभ्य प्रीणात्यथ शिखामृषीन् । बाहू यमेन्द्रवरुणकुबेरवसुधानलान् ॥ १,२१३.
Having touched Rudra at the crown of the head, then the sages at the topknot, touch the arms for Yama, Indra, Varuṇa, Kubera, Earth, and Fire.
अभ्युक्ष्य चरणौ विष्णुमिन्द्रं विष्णु करद्वयम् । अग्निर्वायुश्च सूर्येन्दुगिरयोऽङ्गुलिपर्वसु ॥ १,२१३.
After sprinkling water, touch Viṣṇu at the feet, Indra and Viṣṇu at both hands; Agni, Vāyu, Sūrya, Candra, and the mountains at the finger joints.
गङ्गाद्याः सरितस्तासु या रेखाः करमध्यगाः । उषः काले तु संप्राप्ते शौचं कृत्वा यथार्थवत् ॥ १,२१३.
The Gaṅgā and other rivers are in the lines at the center of the hand; when dawn arrives, one should perform purification properly.
ततः स्नानर्ं प्कुर्वीत दन्तधावनपूर्वकम् । मुखे पर्युषिते नित्यं भवत्यप्रयतो नरः ॥ १,२१३.
Then, one should bathe, beginning with cleaning the teeth; if the mouth is unclean, a person is always considered impure.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन कुर्याद्वै दन्तघावनम् । कदम्बबिल्वखदिरकरवीरवटार्जुनाः ॥ १,२१३.
Therefore, one should clean the teeth with all effort; kadamba, bilva, khadira, karavīra, vaṭa, and arjuna woods are recommended.
यूथी च बृहती जाती करञ्जार्कातिमुक्तकाः । जम्बूमधूका पामार्गशिरीषोदुम्बरासनाः ॥ १,२१३.
Yūthī, bṛhatī, jātī, karañja, arka, atimuktaka, jambū, madhūka, pāmargha, śirīṣa, udumbara, and asana are also suitable.
क्षीरिकण्टकिवृक्षाद्याः प्रशस्ता दन्तधावने । कटुतिक्तकषायाश्च धनारोग्यसुखप्रदाः ॥ १,२१३.
Milky, thorny trees and others are praised for cleaning the teeth; those that are pungent, bitter, or astringent bestow wealth, health, and comfort.
प्रक्षाल्य भुक्त्वा च शुचौ देशे त्यक्त्वा तदाचामेत् । अमायां च तथा षष्ठ्यां नवम्यां प्रतिपद्यपि ॥ १,२१३.
After eating, one should wash and, in a clean place, discard the stick and rinse; likewise, on the new moon, sixth, ninth, and first lunar days.
वर्जयेद्दन्तकाष्ठन्तु तथैवार्कस्य वासरे । अभावे दन्त काष्ठस्य निषिद्धायां तथा तिथौ ॥ १,२१३.
One should avoid using a tooth-stick on those days, as well as on the day of the sun (Sunday); if a tooth-stick is unavailable or forbidden on a particular lunar day, it should not be used.
अषां द्वादशगण्डूषैः कुर्वीत मुखशोधनम् । प्रातः स्नानं प्रशंसन्ति दृष्टादृष्टकरं हितम् ॥ १,२१३.
With twelve mouthfuls of this, one should cleanse the mouth; morning bathing is praised as beneficial, bringing both seen and unseen results.
सर्वमर्हति शुद्धात्मा प्रातः स्नायी जपादिकम् । अत्यन्तमलिनः कायो नवच्छिद्रसमन्वितः ॥ १,२१३.
Everyone who is pure in self, who bathes in the morning, and who engages in recitation and such, is worthy; for the body is extremely impure, filled with nine openings.
स्त्रवत्येष दिवा रात्रौ प्रातः स्नानं विशोधनम् । मनः प्रसादजननं रूपसौभाग्यवर्धनम् ॥ १,२१३.
This flows both day and night; morning bathing is purifying, brings clarity of mind, and increases beauty and good fortune.
शोकदुः खप्रशमनं गङ्गास्नानवदाचरेत् । अद्य हस्ते तु नक्षत्रे दशम्यां ज्येष्ठके सिते ॥ १,२१३.
It removes sorrow and suffering; one should bathe as if in the Ganga, especially today when the moon is in the hand, on the tenth day, under the Jyeshtha star, and when the moon is bright.
दशपाप हरायां च अदत्वा दानकल्मषम् । विरुद्धाचरणं हिंसा परदारोपसेवनम् ॥ १,२१३.
On the day that removes ten sins, without having given away the impurity of gifts, one should avoid contrary conduct, violence, and association with another's spouse.
पारुष्यानृतपैशुन्यमसम्बद्धाभिभाषणम् । परद्रव्याभिधानं च मनसानिष्टचिन्तनम् ॥ १,२१३.
Harshness, falsehood, slander, irrelevant speech, coveting another's wealth, and thinking evil in the mind—
एतद्दशाघघातार्थं गङ्गास्नानं करोम्यहम् । प्रातः संक्षेपतः स्नानं वानप्रस्थगृहस्थयोः ॥ १,२१३.
For the destruction of these ten sins, I perform bathing in the Ganga; in brief, morning bathing is prescribed for forest-dwellers and householders.
यतेस्त्रिषवणं स्नानं सकृत्त ब्रह्मचारिणः । आचम्य तीर्थमावाह्य स्नायात्स्मृत्वाव्ययं हरिम् ॥ १,२१३.
For ascetics, bathing is to be done three times daily; for celibates, once. After sipping water and invoking the sacred place, one should bathe, remembering the imperishable Hari.
तिस्रः कोट्यस्तु विज्ञेया मन्देहा नाम राक्षसाः । उदयन्तं दुरात्मानः सूर्यमिच्छन्ति खादितुम् ॥ १,२१३.
It should be known that there are three crores of demons called Mandehas, evil-minded, who wish to devour the rising Sun.
स हन्ति सूर्यं सन्ध्यायां नोपास्तिं कुरुते तु यः । दहन्ति मन्त्रपूतेन तोयेनानलरूपिणा ॥ १,२१३.
He who does not perform worship at sunrise harms the Sun; they are burned by water purified by mantra, which takes the form of fire.
