All those who act as prescribed attain the highest state; now, from awakening to sleep, I will tell you the dharma of the householder.
He should awaken during the Brahma hour and reflect upon dharma and wealth, as well as the bodily hardships rooted in them, and the true meaning of knowledge.
At the end of the night, rising, purified and composed, having bathed, he should worship at the twilight, always diligent at all times.
In the morning, he should worship at the twilight after cleaning his teeth; for both urination and defecation during the day, he should face north.
At night, he should face south for both, and at both twilights as during the day; whether in shade, darkness, at night, or during the day, the twice-born—
Should act as prescribed, even in situations of danger to life, on ground purified by cow dung, charcoal, anthills, or freshly ploughed earth.

He should avoid earth from others' cleansing, from cremation grounds; for one organ, give earth once, for two organs, give earth twice in the left hand.
For both organs, two portions are to be given; this is called cleansing after urination. For one organ, three portions at the anus, and ten in the left hand.
Five portions for the foot, ten for one hand, seven portions of earth; the first portion of earth is considered to be half a handful.
The second and third portions are said to be half of that; if one seated cannot perform cleansing after urine or feces—
He should perform half-cleansing for himself at all times; for daytime cleansing, half at night, or a quarter is prescribed.
A healthy person should perform as prescribed, but one who is ill should do as much as he is able; the impurities are fat, semen, blood, marrow, saliva, feces, urine, earwax, and excrement.
Phlegm, nasal mucus, sweat—these twelve are the bodily impurities of humans; one should maintain cleanliness until these are removed.
The prescribed number of acts of purification is not to be exceeded by those not instructed; cleanliness is said to be of two kinds: external and internal.

Touch the sky at the mouth, air at the nose, the sun at the eyes, the directions at the ears; then, touch the life-knot at the navel, and Brahman at the heart.
Having touched Rudra at the crown of the head, then the sages at the topknot, touch the arms for Yama, Indra, Varuṇa, Kubera, Earth, and Fire.
After sprinkling water, touch Viṣṇu at the feet, Indra and Viṣṇu at both hands; Agni, Vāyu, Sūrya, Candra, and the mountains at the finger joints.
The Gaṅgā and other rivers are in the lines at the center of the hand; when dawn arrives, one should perform purification properly.
Then, one should bathe, beginning with cleaning the teeth; if the mouth is unclean, a person is always considered impure.
Therefore, one should clean the teeth with all effort; kadamba, bilva, khadira, karavīra, vaṭa, and arjuna woods are recommended.

Milky, thorny trees and others are praised for cleaning the teeth; those that are pungent, bitter, or astringent bestow wealth, health, and comfort.
After eating, one should wash and, in a clean place, discard the stick and rinse; likewise, on the new moon, sixth, ninth, and first lunar days.
One should avoid using a tooth-stick on those days, as well as on the day of the sun (Sunday); if a tooth-stick is unavailable or forbidden on a particular lunar day, it should not be used.
