ग्मध्ये द्वितुर्यौ जौ चपला मुखपूर्वादिचापला । द्वितीयार्धे सजघना आर्याजातेश्च लक्षणम् ॥ १,२०८.
In the middle, the second is y, jau is capalā, from the beginning of the foot; in the second half, sajaghanā; these are the marks of the Āryā and Jāti meters.
आर्या प्रथमार्धलक्ष्म गीतिः स्याच्चेद्दलद्वये । उपगीतिर्द्वितीयार्धादुद्गीतिर्व्यत्ययाद्भवेत् ॥ १,२०८.
Āryā has the mark in the first half; if it is gīti, then in both halves; upagīti is from the second half, udgīti arises from the interchange.
आर्यागीतिश्चान्तगुरुर्गोतिजातेश्च लक्षणम् । षट्कला विषमे चेत्स्युः समेऽष्टौ न निरन्तराः । समा पराश्रिता न स्याद्वैतालीये रलौ गुरुः ॥ १,२०८.
Āryāgīti has a guru at the end; these are the marks of the Gotijāti meter; if there are six kalās in odd positions, eight in even, not continuous; samā is not dependent, and in Vaitālīya, there is a guru at the end.
अन्तेर्यौ पूर्ववदिदमौपच्छन्दसिकं मतम् ॥ १,२०८.
When the two y's are inside as before, this is considered the Aupacchandasika meter.
भाद्गौ स्यादापातलिका ज्ञेयाथो दक्षिणान्तिका । पराश्रितो द्वितीयो लः पादेषु निखिलेष्वपि ॥ १,२०८.
Bhādgau is to be known as āpātalikā, and likewise dakṣiṇāntikā; parāśrita is the second la, present in all feet.
उदीच्यवृत्तिरसमे प्राच्यवृत्तिस्तु युग्मके । सपञ्चमश्चतुर्थांशे युगपत्तौ प्रवृत्तकम् ॥ १,२०८.
The udīcya metre occurs unevenly, while the prācya metre is in pairs; with the fifth syllable in the fourth foot, both proceed together.
उदीच्याद्यङ्घ्रिसंयोगाद्युग्मपादैकपादिका । चारुहासिन्ययुग्माङ्घ्रौ वैतालीयस्य संग्रहः ॥ १,२०८.
From the union of the first foot of udīcya and the paired feet, arises the single-footed yugmapāda; in vaitālīya, both feet are charming and smiling, this is its collection.
वक्त्रं नाद्यान्नसौ स्यातां चतुर्थाद्यगणो भवेत् । पथ्यावक्त्रं जेन समे विपरीतादिरन्यथा ॥ १,२०८.
The face should not begin with na; the fourth foot should have a gaṇa; pathyā face is with ja in the same, otherwise it is reversed or different.
उसमे नश्च चपला विपुला लघुसप्तमा । निखिले वा सैतवस्य म्रौ न्तौ चाब्धेस्तत्पूर्वकौ ॥ १,२०८.
In usame, na, and capalā, vipulā is the seventh laghu; in all, saitava has mrau and tau, and in the ocean, those two are preceded by tat.
षोडशलोऽचलधृतिर्मात्रासमकमुच्यते ॥ १,२०८.
Sixteen syllables, with acala-dhṛti, are said to be equal in mātrā.
नवमलस्तथा गोऽन्त्यः जो न्लौवाथाम्बुधेर्यथा । विश्लोकः स्यात्तच्चतुष्कद्विगुणाद्वानवासिका ॥ १,२०८.
Nava, mala, and likewise go at the end; jo, nlau, and also as in the ocean; viśloka is four times, or twice that, called navāsikā.
बाणाष्टनवकेषु स्याल्लश्चित्रा षोडशात्मिका । सममात्रासमादिष्टं पदाकुलकमीरितम् ॥ १,२०८.
In bāṇa, eight and nine, la is citrā, consisting of sixteen; equal mātrā is prescribed, this is called padākulaka.
वृत्तमात्रा विना वर्णैर्ला वर्णा गुरुभिर्विना । गुरुवो लैर्दले नित्यं प्रमाणमिति निश्चितम् ॥ १,२०८.
A metre without mātrā is with syllables; la is without heavy syllables; heavy syllables are always la in the foot, this is the established rule.
अष्टाविंशातिला गन्ता प्रथमार्धे द्वितीयके । त्रिंशदस्यां शिखा गन्ता खञ्जातद्व्यत्ययाद्भवेत् ॥ १,२०८.
Twenty-eight la will go in the first half of the second; thirty in the crest, la will go, and by the reversal of khañja, it is thus.
षोडशानङ्गक्रीडा गा द्वात्रिंशच्चरमे च लाः । सप्तविंशातिला गन्ता दलयो रुचिरा द्वयोः ॥ १,२०८.
Sixteen in anaṅga-krīḍā, thirty-two la in the last; twenty-seven la will go in both feet, both are beautiful.
मात्रावृत्तानि चोक्तानि वर्णवृत्तानि वच्मि वै ॥ १,२०८.
The mātrā metres have been spoken; now I will declare the syllabic metres.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २०९ सूत उवाच । श्रीरुक्था गेन सा ज्ञेया उत्युक्था स्त्री गुरुद्वयम् । मो नारी रो मृगी मध्या मगौ कन्या प्रतिष्ठया ॥ १,२०९.
Sūta said: The śrīruktha is to be known as gena; utyuktha is feminine with two heavy syllables; mo is woman, ro is deer, madhyā is magau, kanyā is pratiṣṭhā.
भो गौ पङ्क्तिः सुप्रातिष्ठा तनुमध्या तयौ स्मृता । नयाभ्यां बालललिता गायत्रीच्छन्द एव हि ॥ १,२०९.
Bho gau is paṅkti, well established, slender in the middle, remembered as tayau; with nayā and bāla-lalitā, it is indeed the gāyatrī metre.
मसगैर्मदलेखा स्यादुष्णिक्छन्दः स्मृतं बुधैः । भौ गौ चित्रपदा ख्याता विद्युन्माला ममौ गगौ ॥ १,२०९.
Masagai and madalekhā are called uṣṇik metre by the wise; bhau gau is famous as citrapadā, vidyunmālā is mamau gagau.
माणवकं भात्तलगा म्नौ गौ हंसरुतं स्मृतम् । समानिका रजगला जरला गः प्रमाणिका । आभ्यामन्यद्वितानं स्यादनुष्टुप्छन्द ईरितम् ॥ १,२०९.
Māṇavaka is bhāttalaga, mnau gau is remembered as haṃsaruta; samānikā, rajagalā, jaralā, gaḥ is pramāṇikā; with these two, another arrangement is called anuṣṭup metre.
रनसैः स्याद्धलमुखी नौ मः शिशुभृता भवेत् । बृहतीछन्द इत्युक्तं स्मौ जगौ स विराजितम् ॥ १,२०९.
With ranasai, it is halamukhī; nau maḥ is for the child-bearer; this is called bṛhatī metre, smau jagau is its shining form.
पणवं स्यान्मनयगैर्मयूरसारिणी भवेत् । रजाभ्याञ्च रगाभ्याञ्च रुक्मवती भमौ सगौ ॥ १,२०९.
Paṇava is manayagai, mayūrasāriṇī is formed; with rajā and ragā, rukmavatī is bhamau sagau.
मत्ता मभसगैर्युक्ता नरजा गो मनोरमा । पङ्क्तिच्छन्दः समाख्यातं जसता गावुपस्थितम् ॥ १,२०९.
The meter called Paṅkti is described as consisting of lines adorned with pleasing syllables, joined with the sounds 'ma', 'bha', and 'ga', and is delightful to people and cows alike.
तौ जो गाविन्द्रवज्रा स्याज्जतज्गा गुपपूर्विका ॥ १,२०९.
Of these, the one with 'ga', 'vi', and 'indra', and beginning with 'ja', is known as Gupapūrvikā.
उपजातयोऽन्याद्यन्ताः सुमुखी नजजा लगौ । भभभा गौ दोधकं स्याच्छालिनी मतता गगौ ॥ १,२०९.
Other meters, ending with upajāti, are Sumukhī, Najajā, and Lagau; Bhabhabhā and Gau are Dodhaka, while Śālinī is Matatā and Gagau.
अब्धिलोकैश्च विच्छेदो वातोर्ंमो ममता गगौ । श्रीर्भतौ ननगाः प्रोक्ता पञ्चभिः षडूभिरेव च ॥ १,२०९.
The separation of the worlds of water and air is called Mamatā Gagau; Śrībhatau and Nanagā are said to be composed of five or six syllables.
मगना नो गो भ्रमरविलासितमुदाहृतम् । रथोद्धतार्नौ रलगाः स्वागता रनभा गगौ ॥ १,२०९.
Maganā and Go are named for the play of bees; Rathoddhata and Arṇau are Ralagāḥ, and Svāgata and Ranabhā Gagau.
वृत्ता ननौ सगौ गः स्यान्नौ रलौ गः समद्रिका । रजरा ल्गौ श्येनिका स्याज्जसता गौ शिखण्डितम् । त्रिष्टुप्छन्दः समाख्यातं पिङ्गलेन महात्मना ॥ १,२०९.
Vṛttā, Nanau, Sagau, and Gaḥ are said to be equal in measure; Rajarā and Lgau are Śyenikā, Jasatā and Gau are Śikhaṇḍita; the Triṣṭubh meter is thus named by the great Piṅgala.
रनौ भसौ चन्द्रवर्त्म वंशस्थं स्याज्जतौ जरौ । ततो जराविन्द्रवंशा वेदसैस्तोटकं स्मृतम् । न्भौ भ्रौ द्रुतविलम्बितं पुटश्च स्यान्ननौ मयौ ॥ १,२०९.
Ranau, Bhasau, and Candravartma are in the Vaṃśastha meter, with Jatau and Jarau; then Jarā and Indravaṃśā are known as Vedasaistoṭaka; Nbhau and Bhrau are Drutavilambita, and Puṭa is Nanau and Mayau.
वसुवेदैश्च विरतिर्मुदितवदना त्वियम् । ननररैः समाख्याता नयना यस्तथा भवेत् ॥ १,२०९.
Vasuveda brings cessation, and this one with a joyful face is named Nayanā, as declared by Nanararā.
