Garuda Purana

त्रिफलापञ्चकोले च दशमूलं विडङ्गकम् । शतावरीगुडूची च निम्बवासककिंशुकाः ॥ १,२०१.

Triphalā, pañcakola, daśamūla, viḍaṅga, śatāvarī, guḍūcī, as well as nimb, vāsaka, and kiṃśuka are to be used.

गजरोगविनाशाय हितो रूक्षः कषायकः । आयुर्वेदद्वयोक्तानामुक्तं संक्षेपसारतः ॥ १,२०१.

For the destruction of elephant diseases, a dry and astringent preparation is beneficial; as stated in both Āyurvedas, this has been briefly summarized.

श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् २०२ हरिरुवाच । एकं पुनर्नवामूलमपामार्गस्य वा शिव । सरसं योनिनिः क्षिप्तं वराङ्गस्य व्यथां हरेत् । प्रसूतिवेदनाञ्चैव तरुणीनां व्यथां हरेत् ॥ १,२०२.

Hari said: One root of punarnavā or apāmārga, O Śiva, placed fresh in the yoni, removes the pain of a woman with a beautiful body, and also relieves the labor pains of young women.

भूमि कूष्माण्डमूलं वै शालिचूर्णमथापि वा । सप्ताहं दुग्धपीतं स्यात्स्त्रीणां बहुपयस्करम् ॥ १,२०२.

If earth, ash gourd root, or rice flour is consumed with milk for seven days, it greatly increases milk production in women.

रुद्रेन्द्रवारुणीमुलं लेपात्स्त्रीस्तनवेदना । नश्येत घृतपक्वा च कार्यावश्यन्तु पोलिका ॥ १,२०२.

By applying a paste of rudra, indra, and varuṇī roots, pain in a woman's breasts is relieved; the poultice should certainly be prepared with ghee.

भक्षिता सा महेशान योनिशूलं विनाशयेत् । प्रलेपिता कारवेल्लमूलेनैव विनिर्गता ॥ १,२०२.

O Maheśāna, when this is eaten, it destroys pain in the womb; and when applied as a paste with kāravella root, it expels what is retained.

योनिः प्रवेशमायाति नात्र कार्या विचारणा । नीलीपटोलमूलानि साज्यानि तिलवारिणा ॥ १,२०२.

When the womb begins to discharge, there is no need for further consideration; the roots of nīlī and paṭola, mixed with clarified butter and sesame oil—

पिष्टान्येषां प्रलेपो वै ज्वालागर्दभरागनत् । पाठामूलं रुद्र पीतं पिष्टं तण्डुलवारिणा ॥ १,२०२.

A paste made from these, applied, removes burning and pain; the root of pāṭhā, O Rudra, when drunk after being ground with rice water—

पापरोगहरं स्याच्च कुष्ठपानं तथैव च । वास्योदकञ्च समधु पीतमन्तर्गतस्य वै ॥ १,२०२.

It removes evil diseases, and likewise cures leprosy; water mixed with honey, when drunk, benefits those afflicted within.

पापरोगस्य सन्तापनिवृक्तिं कुरुते शिव । घृततुल्या रुद्र लाक्षा पीता क्षीरेण वै सह ॥ १,२०२.

O Śiva, it brings relief from the heat of evil diseases; lac, equal in weight to ghee, when drunk with milk, O Rudra—

प्रदरं हरते रोगं नात्र कार्या विचारणा । द्विजयष्टी त्रिकटुकं चूर्णं पीतं हरेच्छिव ॥ १,२०२.

It removes the disease called pradara; there is no need for doubt here. Powder of dvijayaṣṭī and trikaṭu, when drunk, removes it, O Śiva.

तिलक्वाथेन संयुक्तं रक्तगुल्मं स्त्रिया हर । कुसुमस्य निबद्धञ्च तरुणीनां महेश्वर ॥ १,२०२.

Combined with a decoction of sesame, it removes bloody tumors in women; and a preparation of the flower is prescribed for young women, O Maheśvara.

रक्तोत्पलस्य वै कन्दंशर्करातिलसंयुतम् । पीतं सशर्करं स्त्रीणां धारयेद्गर्भपातनम् ॥ १,२०२.

The root of the red lotus, mixed with sugar and sesame, when drunk with sugar by women, causes miscarriage.

रक्तस्त्रावस्य नाशः स्याच्छीतोदकनिषेवणात् । पीतन्तु काञ्जिक रुद्र क्वथितं शरपुङ्खया ॥ १,२०२.

Bleeding is stopped by the use of cold water; and, O Rudra, when fermented gruel boiled with śarapuṅkha is drunk—

हिङ्गुस्त्रैन्धवसंयुक्तं शीघ्रं स्त्रीणां प्रसूतिकृत् । मातुलुङ्गस्य वै मूलं कटिबद्धं प्रसूतिकृत् ॥ १,२०२.

A mixture of asafoetida and rock salt quickly induces labor in women; the root of the citron, tied at the waist, also brings on labor.

अपामार्गस्य वै मूले गर्भवत्यास्तु नामतः । उत्पाट्यमाने सकले पुत्त्रः स्यादान्यथा सुता ॥ १,२०२.

If the root of apāmārga is named and placed for a pregnant woman, when it is pulled up whole, a son is born; otherwise, a daughter.

अपामार्गस्य वै मूले नारीणां शिरसि स्थिते । गर्भशूलं विनश्येत नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ १,२०२.

If the root of apāmārga is placed on the head of a woman, pain in the womb is destroyed; there is no need for further consideration.

कर्पूरमदनफलमधुकैः पूरितः शिव । योनिः सुभा स्याद्वृद्धाया युवत्याः किं पुनर्हर ॥ १,२०२.

O Śiva, when the womb is filled with camphor, madana fruit, and licorice, it becomes beautiful in an old woman—how much more so in a young woman!

यस्य बालस्य तिलकः कृतो गौरोचनाख्यया । शर्कराकुष्ठपानञ्च दत्तं स स्याच्च निर्भयः । विषभूतग्रहादिभ्यो व्याधिभ्यो बालकः शिव ॥ १,२०२.

For a child whose forehead is marked with white ochre, and who is given sugar and kuṣṭha to drink, O Śiva, that child becomes fearless, protected from poisons, spirits, and diseases.

शङ्खनाभिवचाकुष्ठलोहानां धारणं सदा । बालानामुपसर्गेभ्यो रुद्र रक्षाकरं भवेत् ॥ १,२०२.

The constant wearing of conch shell, nābhi, vacā, kuṣṭha, and iron protects children from afflictions, O Rudra.

पलाशचूर्णं समधु गव्याज्यामलकान्वितम् । सविडङ्गं पीतमात्रं नरं कुर्यान्महामतिम् ॥ १,२०२.

Powder of palāśa, mixed with honey, cow's ghee, and amalaki, with viḍaṅga, when drunk, makes a man exceedingly intelligent.

मासैकेन महादेव जरामरणवर्जितः ॥ १,२०२.

Within a single month, O great god, one becomes free from old age and death.

पलाशबीजं सघृतं तिलमध्वन्वितं समम् । सप्ताहं भक्षितं रुद्र जरां नयति संक्षयम् ॥ १,२०२.

Palasha seed, with ghee and sesame mixed equally with honey, when eaten for seven days, O Rudra, destroys old age.

रुद्रामलकचूर्णं वै मधुतैल घृतान्वितम् । जग्ध्वा मासं युवा स्याच्च नरो वागीश्वरी भवेत् ॥ १,२०२.

Powder of Rudra-amalaki, mixed with honey, oil, and ghee—when consumed for a month, a man becomes youthful and eloquent.

शिवामलकचूर्णं वै मधुना उदकेन वा । बलानि कुर्यान्नासायाः प्रत्यूषे भक्षितं शिव ॥ १,२०२.

Powder of Shiva-amalaki, with honey or water, if taken at dawn, O Shiva, strengthens the nostrils.

कुष्ठचूर्णं साज्यमधु प्रातर्जग्ध्वा भवेन्नरः । साक्षात्सुरभिदेहो वै जीवेद्वर्षसहस्रकम् ॥ १,२०२.

If a man eats powder of kushtha with ghee and honey in the morning, his body becomes fragrant and he lives for a thousand years.

माषस्य विदलान्ये वितुषाणि महेश्वर । घृतभावितशुष्काणि पयसा साधितानि वै ॥ १,२०२.

O Maheshvara, split and husked grains of black gram, dried and soaked in ghee, and then cooked with milk—

समाध्वाज्यपयोभिश्च भक्षयित्वा च कामयेत् । स्त्रीणां शतं महादेव तत्क्षणान्नात्र संशयः ॥ १,२०२.

—when eaten with honey, ghee, and milk, O Mahadeva, one can satisfy a hundred women instantly; of this there is no doubt.

रसश्चैरण्डतैलेन गन्धकेन शुभो भवेत् । त्रिकालोदकसंघुष्टो बलकृद्भक्षणाद्भवेत् ॥ १,२०२.

Juice mixed with castor oil and sulfur becomes potent; if gargled with water three times a day and then eaten, it gives strength.
