Garuda Purana

त्रिरेखा गोमूर्त्रिकाभा अथवा प्रश्रवाक्यतः । दिशस्थानप्रसूतो वा ध्वजादीन्गणयेत्क्रमात् ॥ १,१९९.

With three lines, resembling cow urine, or from a flowing stream; or produced at the place of the directions, one should count banners and the like in order.

ध्वजो धूमोऽथ सिंहश्च श्वा वृषः खरदन्तिनौ । ध्वाङ्क्षश्च अष्टमो ज्ञेयो नाम मन्त्रैश्च तान्न्यसेत् ॥ १,१९९.

The banner, smoke, lion, dog, bull, donkey, elephant, and vulture—these eight are to be known by name, and one should install them with mantras.

ध्वजस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा राज्यचिन्ताधनादिकम् । ध्वजस्थाने स्थितो धूम्रो धातुचिन्ता च लाभकृत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a banner in the place of the banner indicates thoughts of sovereignty, wealth, and the like; if smoke is present at the banner's place, it brings thoughts of metals and gain.

ध्वजस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे धनलाभादिकं भवेत् । स्थिते शुनिध्वजस्थाने दासीचिन्तासुखादिकम् ॥ १,१९९.

If a lion is present at the banner's place, it brings gain of wealth and the like; if a dog is present at the banner's place, it brings thoughts of servants, happiness, and so on.

ध्वजस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा स्थानचिन्ता च लाभकम् । ध्वजस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा दुः खक्लेशादिकं भवेत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull at the banner's place brings thoughts of position and gain; seeing a donkey at the banner's place brings suffering, distress, and the like.

ध्वजस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा स्थानचिन्ताजयादिकम् । ध्वजस्थाने तथा ध्वाङ्क्षे क्लेशचिन्ता धनक्षयः ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing an elephant at the banner's place brings thoughts of position, victory, and the like; likewise, if a vulture is at the banner's place, it brings distress and loss of wealth.

धूम्रस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं दुः खं ततो धनम् । धूम्रे धूम्रं तथा दृष्ट्वा कलिदुः खादिकं भवेत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a banner at the place of smoke first brings suffering, then wealth; likewise, seeing smoke at the place of smoke brings quarrels and suffering.

धूम्रस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे मनश्चिन्ताधनादिकम् । धूम्रस्थाने शुनि स्थिते जयलाभादिकं भवेत् ॥ १,१९९.

If a lion is present at the place of smoke, it brings thoughts of the mind, wealth, and so on; if a dog is present at the place of smoke, it brings victory, gain, and the like.

धूम्रस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा नारीगोऽश्वधनादिकम् । धूम्रस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा व्याधिश्चापि धनक्षयः ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull at the place of smoke brings women, horses, wealth, and so on; seeing a donkey at the place of smoke brings disease and loss of wealth.

धूम्रस्थाने गजे दृष्टे राज्यलाभजयादिकम् । धूम्रस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे धनराज्यविनाशनम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing an elephant at the place of smoke brings gain of kingdom, victory, and the like; if a vulture is present at the place of smoke, it brings loss of wealth and kingdom.

सिंहस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा राज्यलाभादि निर्दिशेत् । सिंहस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे कन्याप्राप्तिर्धनादिकम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a banner at the place of the lion indicates gain of kingdom and the like; if smoke is present at the place of the lion, it brings acquisition of a maiden, wealth, and so on.

सिंहस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे जयो मित्रसमागमः । कौलेयके सिंहगते स्त्रीचिन्ता ग्रामलाभकम् ॥ १,१९९.

When the lion is in its own place, there is victory and meeting with friends; in the house of the lion, if the lion enters, it brings thoughts of women and gain of villages.

सिंह स्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा गृहक्षेत्रार्थलाभकम् । सिंहस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा ग्रामस्वामित्वमेव च ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull in the lion's place brings gain of house, field, and wealth; seeing an elephant in the lion's place brings ownership of villages.

सिंहस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा आरोग्यायुः सुखादिकम् । सिंहस्थानेस्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे कन्याधान्यगुणादिकम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing an elephant in the lion's place brings health, long life, and happiness; when a crow is in the lion's place, it brings maiden, grain, and virtues.

शुनः स्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा स्थानचिन्तासुखादिकम् । शुनः स्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे कलहं कार्यनाशनम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a flag in the dog's place brings thoughts of position and happiness; when a smoky one is in the dog's place, it brings quarrel and destruction of undertakings.

शुनः स्थान स्थिते सिंहे कार्यासिद्धिर्भविष्यति । स्थिते शुनि शुनः स्थाने धननाशो भविष्यति ॥ १,१९९.

When the lion is in the dog's place, success in undertakings will occur; when the dog is in the dog's place, loss of wealth will occur.

शुनः स्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा रोगी रोगाद्वि मुच्यते । शुनः स्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा कलहस्य भयं भवेत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull in the dog's place, the sick person is freed from disease; seeing a donkey in the dog's place brings fear of quarrel.

शुनः स्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रभार्यासमागमः । श्वस्थाने च स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे पीडास्यात्कुलनाशनम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing an elephant in the dog's place brings union with son and wife; when a crow is in the dog's place, it brings suffering and destruction of the family.

वृषस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा राजपूजासुखादिकम् । वृषस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे राजपूजासुखादिकम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a flag in the bull's place brings royal honor and happiness; when a smoky one is in the bull's place, it brings royal honor and happiness.

वृषस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे सौभाग्यञ्च धनादिकम् । स्थिते शुनि वृषस्थाने बलश्रीकाम ईरितः ॥ १,१९९.

When the lion is in the bull's place, there is good fortune and wealth; when the dog is in the bull's place, desire for strength and prosperity is spoken.

वृषस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा कीर्तितुष्टिसुखादिकम् । वृषस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा महालाभादिकं भवेत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull in the bull's place brings fame, satisfaction, and happiness; seeing a donkey in the bull's place brings great gain.

वृषस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीगजादिसमागमः । वृषस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे स्थानमानसमागमः ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing an elephant in the bull's place brings union with women, elephants, and others; when a crow is in the bull's place, it brings union with place and mind.

खरस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा रोगशोकादिकं भवेत् । खरस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे तस्करादिभयं भवेत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a flag in the donkey's place brings disease, sorrow, and the like; when a smoky one is in the donkey's place, it brings fear from thieves and others.

खरस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे पूजाश्रीविजयादिकम् । स्थिते शुनिखरस्थाने सन्तापधननाशनम् ॥ १,१९९.

When the lion is in the donkey's place, it brings honor, prosperity, and victory; when the dog is in the donkey's place, it brings distress and loss of wealth.

खरस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा सुखं प्रियसमागमः । खरस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा दुः खीपीडादि निर्दिशेत् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull in the donkey's place brings happiness and meeting with loved ones; seeing a donkey in the donkey's place indicates suffering and affliction.

खरस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा सुखपुत्त्रादिकं भवेत् । खरस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे कलहो व्याधिरेव च ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing an elephant in the donkey's place brings happiness and sons; when a crow is in the donkey's place, it brings quarrel and disease.

गजस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीजयश्रीसुखादिकम् । गजस्थानेस्थिते धूम्रे धनधान्यसमागमः ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a flag in the elephant's place brings victory over women, prosperity, and happiness; when a smoky one is in the elephant's place, it brings union with wealth and grain.

गजस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे जयसिद्धिसमागमः । स्थिते शुनि गजस्थाने आरोग्यं सुखसम्पदः ॥ १,१९९.

When the lion is in the elephant's place, it brings victory and accomplishment; when the dog is in the elephant's place, it brings health and abundant happiness.

गजस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा राजमानधनादिकम् । गजस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं दुः खं ततः सुखम् ॥ १,१९९.

Seeing a bull in the elephant's place brings royal honor, respect, and wealth; seeing a donkey in the elephant's place brings first suffering, then happiness.
