मार्गरोधी मार्दवकृत्स एकः परिषेवितः । गात्रकण्डूकोष्ठशोथवैवर्ण्यं जनयेद्रसः । रक्तवातं पित्तरक्तं पुंस्त्वेन्द्रियरुजादिकम् ॥ १,१७३.
When taken alone, it obstructs channels and causes softness; it produces itching of the limbs, abdominal swelling, discoloration, blood disorders, wind disorders, bile and blood disorders, impotence, and diseases of the senses.
व्योषशिग्रूमूलकं देवदारु च कुष्ठकम् । लशुनं वल्गुजी फलं मुस्तागुग्गुलुलाङ्गली ॥ १,१७३.
Long pepper, horse-radish root, devadāru, kuṣṭha, garlic, valgujī fruit, mustā, guggulu, and lāṅgalī—
कटुको दीपनः शोधी कुष्ठकण्डूकफान्तकृत् । स्थौल्यालस्यक्रिमिहरः शुक्रमेदोविरोधनः । एकोऽत्यर्थं सेव्यमानः भ्रमदाहादिकृद्भवेत् ॥ १,१७३.
The pungent taste is kindling, purifying, destroys skin diseases, itching, and phlegm; it removes obesity, laziness, and worms, and opposes semen and fat; when used excessively, it causes dizziness, burning, and the like.
कृतमालः कीराणि हरिद्रेन्द्रयवास्तथा । स्वादुकण्टकवेत्राणि बृहतीद्वयशङ्खिनी ॥ १,१७३.
Kṛtamāla, kīrāṇi, turmeric, barley, sweet thorn, vetra, both bṛhatī and śaṅkhinī—
गुडूची चद्रवन्ती च त्रिवृन्मण्डूकपर्ण्यपि । कारवेल्लकवार्ताकुकरवीरकवासकाः ॥ १,१७३.
Guḍūcī, dravantī, trivṛt, maṇḍūkaparṇī, kāravella, brinjal, karavīra, and vāsaka—
रोहिणी शङ्खचूर्णं च कर्कोटो वै जयन्तिका । जातीवारुणकं निम्बो ज्योतिष्मती पुनर्नवा ॥ १,१७३.
Rohiṇī, conch powder, karkoṭa, jayantikā, jātī, vāruṇaka, nimbu, jyotiṣmatī, and punarnavā—
तिक्तो रसश्छेदनः स्याद्रोचनी दीपनस्तथा । शोधनो ज्वरतृष्णाघ्नो मूर्छाकण्ठार्तिकादिजित् ॥ १,१७३.
The bitter taste is cutting, cleansing, and kindling; it is purifying, relieves fever and thirst, and conquers fainting, throat pain, and similar ailments.
विण्मूत्रक्लेदसंशोषो ह्यत्यर्थं स च सेवितः । हनुस्तम्भाक्षेपकार्तिशिरः शूलब्रणादिकृत् ॥ १,१७३.
When used excessively, it dries up feces and urine; it causes stiffness of the jaw, convulsions, pain, headache, and wounds.
त्रिफलासल्लकीजम्बु आम्रातकवचादिकम् । तिन्दुकं वकुलं शालं पालङ्कीमुद्गचिल्लकम् ॥ १,१७३.
Triphala, sallakī, jambu, āmrātaka, vacā, tinduka, vakula, śāla, pālaṅkī, mudga, and cillaka—
कषायो ग्राहको रोपी स्तम्भनक्लेदशोषणः । एकोऽत्यर्थं सेव्यमानो हृदये चाथ पीडकः । मुखशोषज्वराध्मानमन्यास्तम्भादिकारकः ॥ १,१७३.
The astringent taste is absorbent, healing, binding, and dries moisture; when consumed alone in excess, it causes pain in the heart, dryness of the mouth, fever, abdominal distension, and other forms of stiffness.
हरिद्राकुष्ठलवणं मेषशृङ्गिबलाद्वयम् । कच्छुरा सल्लकी पाठा पुनर्नवा शतावरी ॥ १,१७३.
Turmeric, kuṣṭha, rock salt, meṣaśṛṅgi, both kinds of balā, kacchurā, sallakī, pāṭhā, punarnavā, and śatāvarī—
अग्नि मन्थो ब्रह्मदण्डी श्वदंष्ट्रैरण्डके तथा । यवकोलकुलत्थादिकर्षाशी दशमूलकम् । पृथक्समस्तो वातातोर्बहुपित्तहरस्तथा ॥ १,१७३.
Agnimantha, brahmadaṇḍī, śvadaṃṣṭra, eraṇḍa, barley, kola, kulattha, karṣāśī, daśamūla—each separately and all together remove wind disorders and also many bile disorders.
शतावरी विदारी च बालकोशीरचन्दनम् । दूर्वा वटः पिप्पली च बदरी सल्लकी तथा ॥ १,१७३.
Śatāvarī, vidārī, bālaka, śīra, sandalwood, dūrvā, vaṭa, pippalī, badarī, and sallakī—
कदली चोत्पलं पद्ममुदुम्बरपटोलकन् । अथ श्लेष्महरो वर्गो हरिद्रागुडकुष्ठकम् ॥ १,१७३.
Banana, lotus, red lotus, udumbara, paṭola, and then the group that removes phlegm: turmeric, jaggery, and kuṣṭha.
शतपुष्पी च जाती च व्योषारग्वधलाङ्गली । सर्पिस्तैलवसामज्जाः स्नेहेषु प्रवरं स्मृतम् ॥ १,१७३.
Śatapuṣpī, jātī, vyoṣa, aragvadha, lāṅgalī, clarified butter, oil, animal fat, and marrow are considered the best among unctuous substances.
तथा धीस्मृतिमेधाग्निकाङ्क्षिणां शस्यते घृतम् । केवलं पैत्तिके सर्पिर्वातिके लवणान्वितम् ॥ १,१७३.
Likewise, ghee is recommended for those desiring intelligence, memory, intellect, and digestive fire; for those with excess bile, only ghee should be given, and for those with excess wind, ghee mixed with salt.
देयं बहुकफे वापि व्योषक्षारसमायुतम् । ग्रन्थिनाडीकृमिस्लेष्ममेदोमारुतरोगिषु ॥ १,१७३.
For those with much phlegm, ghee combined with vyoṣa and alkaline substances should be administered; also in cases of glandular, channel, worm, phlegm, fat, and wind disorders.
तैलं लाघवदार्ढ्याय क्रूरकोष्ठेषु देहिषु । वातातपाम्बुभारस्त्रीव्यायामक्षीणधातुषु ॥ १,१७३.
Oil is to be given for lightness and firmness in those with hard bowels, and in those depleted by wind, sun, water, burdens, women, or excessive exercise.
रूक्षक्लेशक्षयात्याग्निवाता वृतपथेषु । अथ दग्ध्वा शिराजालं योनिकर्म शिरोरुजि (जम् ) ॥ १,१७३.
In cases of dryness, suffering, wasting, excessive digestive fire, and wind obstructing the channels, after cauterizing the network of veins, treatment for the womb or head pain is prescribed.
उत्तमस्य पलं मात्रा त्रिभिश्चाक्षैश्च मध्यमे । जघन्यस्य पलार्धेन स्नेहक्वाथौषधेषु च ॥ १,१७३.
For the best type, the dose is one pala; for the middle, three akṣas; for the lowest, half a pala, regarding unctuous decoctions and medicines.
जलमुष्णं घृते देयं पृथक्तैले तु शस्यते । सेनेहे पित्ते तु तृष्णायां पिबेदुष्णोदकं नरः ॥ १,१७३.
Warm water should be given with ghee, but separately with oil; in unctuous treatment for bile and thirst, a man should drink warm water.
वातानुलोमं दीप्ताग्रर्वर्चः स्निग्धस्य तन्मतम् । रूक्षम्य स्नेदृनं कार्यमभिस्निग्धस्य रूक्षणम् ॥ १,१७३.
For those with unctuousness, downward movement of wind, strong digestive fire, and good complexion are considered proper; for those with dryness, unctuousness should be applied, and for those already unctuous, dryness should be induced.
श्यामाककोरदोषान्नतक्रपिण्याकसकुभिः । वातश्लेष्माणि वाते वा कफे वा स्वेद इष्यते । न स्वेदयेदतिम्थूलरूक्षदुर्वलमूर्छितान् ॥ १,१७३.
Śyāmāka, kodrava, doṣa, natakra, piṇyāka, and sakubhi are used for fomentation in wind and phlegm disorders; but one should not foment those who are excessively obese, dry, weak, or faint.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १७४ धन्वतरिरुवाच । घृततैलादि वक्ष्यामि शृणु सुश्रुत रोगनुत् । शङ्खपुष्पी वचा सोमा ब्राह्मी ब्रह्मसुवर्चला ॥ १,१७४.
Dhanvantari said: I will now describe ghee, oil, and the like; listen, O Suśruta, destroyer of disease. Śaṅkhapuṣpī, vacā, somā, brāhmī, and brahmasuvarcalā,
अभया च गुडूची च अटरूपकवागुजी । एतैरक्षसमैर्भागैर्घृतप्रस्थं विपाचयेत् ॥ १,१७४.
Abhayā, guḍūcī, aṭarūpa, kavāgujī—using equal parts of these, one should cook a prastha of ghee.
कण्टकार्या रसप्रस्थक्षीरप्रस्थममन्वितम् । एतद्ब्राह्मीघृतं नाम श्रुतिमेधाकरं परम् ॥ १,१७४.
With kaṇṭakāri juice and an equal measure of milk, this is called brāhmī ghee, supreme for hearing and intellect.
त्रिफलाचित्रकबलानिर्गुण्डी निम्बवासकाः । पुनर्नवा गुडूची च बृहती च शतावरी ॥ १,१७४.
Triphalā, citraka, balā, nirgundī, nimbavāsaka, punarnavā, guḍūcī, bṛhatī, and śatāvarī,
एतैर्घृतं यथालाभं सर्वरोगविमर्दनम् । बलाशतकषाये तु तैलस्यार्धाढकं पचेत् । कल्कैर्मधूकमञ्जिष्ठाचन्दनोत्पलपद्मकैः ॥ १,१७४.
With these, ghee is prepared as available, which destroys all diseases; in a decoction of a hundred balā roots, half an āḍhaka of oil is cooked, with pastes of madhūka, mañjiṣṭhā, candana, utpala, and padmaka.
सूक्ष्मैलापिप्पलीकुष्ठत्वगेलागुरुकेसरैः । गन्धाश्वजीवनीयैश्च क्षीराढकसमाश्रितम् ॥ १,१७४.
With fine powders of ilā, pippalī, kuṣṭha, tvak, elā, aguru, and kesara, and with fragrant and life-giving herbs, all combined with an āḍhaka of milk.
एतन्मृद्वग्निना पक्वं स्थापयेद्राजते शुभे । सर्ववातविकारांस्तु सर्वधात्वन्तराश्रयान् ॥ १,१७४.
This, cooked gently over a fire, should be kept in a pure silver vessel; it alleviates all wind disorders and those affecting all bodily tissues.
