ज्योतिष्मतीमूलकानां तैलानि च हरन्ति हि । कृमिकुष्ठप्रमेहांश्च वातश्लेष्मशिरोरुजः ॥ १,१७२.
The oils of jyotishmati and other roots remove worms, skin diseases, urinary disorders, and also pains caused by wind, phlegm, and the head.
दाडिमामलकीकोलकरमर्द्पियालकम् । जम्बीरं नागग्गं च आम्रातककपिन्थकम् ॥ १,१७२.
Pomegranate, amalaki, kola, karamada, piyala, jambira, naganga, amrataka, and kapittha are mentioned.
पित्तलान्यनिलघ्नानि कफोत्क्लेशकराणिच । जलं जीमूतकेक्ष्वाकुकुटजाकृतबन्धनम् ॥ १,१७२.
These are beneficial for pitta and pacify vata, but aggravate kapha. Water prepared with jimutaka, ikshvaku, and kutaja is binding.
धामार्गवश्च संयोज्याः सर्वथा वमनेष्वमी । पूर्वाह्ने वमनायेते मदनेन्द्रयवी वचा ॥ १,१७२.
Dhamargava and arka should always be combined for emesis. For inducing vomiting in the forenoon, madana, indrava, and vacha are used.
मृदुकोष्टश्च पित्तेन खरो वातकफाश्रयात् । मध्यमः समदोषे स्यात्त्रिवृत्तिते विरेचनम् ॥ १,१७२.
A person with a soft bowel is affected by pitta; with hard bowels, by vata and kapha; one with moderate doṣas is suitable for purgation with trivrit.
शर्करामधुसंयुक्तं सैन्धवं नगरं त्रिवृत् । हरीतकीविहङ्गानि गोमूत्रेण विरेचनम् ॥ १,१७२.
Trivrit mixed with sugar and honey, saindhava salt, nagara, haritaki, and vihana, administered with cow's urine, acts as a purgative.
एरण्डतैलं त्रिफलाक्वाथश्च द्विगुणस्तथा । वातोल्बणेषु दोषेषु भोजयित्वाथ वामयेत् ॥ १,१७२.
Castor oil and a decoction of triphala, in double measure, should be given in cases of vata-dominant disorders, after feeding, to induce vomiting.
वंशादिनेत्रं कुर्वीत पडष्टद्वादशाङ्गुलम् । कर्कन्धृफलवच्छिद्रं वस्तिरुत्तानशायिने ॥ १,१७२.
One should make a bamboo tube, eight or twelve finger-breadths long, with a hole like the fruit of karkandhu, for enema in a person lying on his back.
निरूहदानेऽपि विधिरयमेवमुदीरितः । अर्धत्रिपट्पले मात्रा लघुमध्योत्तमः क्रमात् ॥ १,१७२.
This is the prescribed method for administering enemas; the dosage is half, three-quarters, or a full pala, classified as light, moderate, or strong.
पथ्याक्षवात्र्योकद्विचतुर्भाग रुगर्दनाः । शतवर्यसृताभृङ्गसिन्धुवारादिभाविताः ॥ १,१७२.
Wholesome akshavatri, in one, two, or four parts, mixed with rugardana, shatavari, srita, bhringa, sindhuvara, and other such substances, is used.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १७३ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । द्रव्याणि मधुरादीनि वक्ष्ये रागहराण्यहम् । शालिषष्टिकगोधृमक्षीरं घृतं रसा मध ॥ १,१७३.
Dhanvantari said: I will now describe the substances, beginning with those that are sweet, which remove passion: shali rice, shashtika rice, godhuma wheat, milk, ghee, juices, and honey.
मज्जाशृङ्गाटकयवकशेर्विवारुगीक्षुरम् । गम्भगी पौष्करं बीजं द्राक्षा खर्जूरकं बला ॥ १,१७३.
Marrow, shringataka, barley, yava, urugi, kshura, gambhari, pushkara seeds, grapes, dates, and bala are included.
नारिकलेक्ष्वात्मणुप्ता विदारी च प्रियालकम् । मधुकं तालकष्माण्डं मुख्योऽयं मधुरो गणः ॥ १,१७३.
Coconut, ikshvaku, atmanupta, vidari, priyala, licorice, palm fruit, and ash gourd—these are the chief sweet substances.
मूर्छादाहप्रशमनः पडिन्द्रियप्रसादनः । कृमिकृत्कफकृच्चैव एकोऽत्यर्थ निपेवितः ॥ १,१७३.
They relieve fainting and burning, purify the senses, produce worms and kapha, and if used excessively, cause harm.
श्वासकासाम्यमाधुर्यस्वरघातार्वुदानि च । गलगण्डश्लीपदानि गुडलेपादि कारयेत् ॥ १,१७३.
For asthma, cough, diabetes, hoarseness, tumors, swelling of the throat, and elephantiasis, one should apply a paste of jaggery and similar substances.
दाडिमामलकाम्रं च कपित्थकरमर्दकौ । मातुलुङ्गाम्रातकं च बदरं तिन्तडीफलम् ॥ १,१७३.
Pomegranate, amalaki, mango, kapittha, karamada, matulunga, amrataka, badara, and tamarind fruit are included.
दधि तक्रं काञ्जिकं च लकुचं चाम्लवे तसम् । अम्लो लोणः शुण्ठीयुक्तो जारणः पाचनो रसः ॥ १,१७३.
Curd, buttermilk, fermented gruel, lakuca fruit, and other sour substances—sour taste with salt and ginger is digestive and promotes digestion.
क्लेदनो वातकृद्धृप्यो विदाही चानुलोमनः । अम्लोऽत्यर्थं सेव्यमानः कुर्याद्धै दन्तहर्षकम् ॥ १,१७३.
Sour taste is moistening, increases wind, is sharp, causes burning, and promotes downward movement; when consumed in excess, it produces tingling in the teeth.
शरीरस्य च शैतिल्यं स्वरकण्ठास्यहृद्दहेत् । छिन्नभिन्नव्रणादीनि पाचयित्वाग्निभावितः ॥ १,१७३.
It causes looseness of the body, hoarseness of voice, disorders of the throat, mouth, and heart; after ripening wounds and ulcers, it produces a burning sensation.
लवणानि यवक्षारसर्जिकादिश्च लावणः । शोधनः पाचनः क्लेदी विश्लेषसर्पणादिकृत् ॥ १,१७३.
Salts such as common salt, yavakṣāra, sarjikā, and others—salty taste is purifying, digestive, moistening, and causes separation and spreading.
मार्गरोधी मार्दवकृत्स एकः परिषेवितः । गात्रकण्डूकोष्ठशोथवैवर्ण्यं जनयेद्रसः । रक्तवातं पित्तरक्तं पुंस्त्वेन्द्रियरुजादिकम् ॥ १,१७३.
When taken alone, it obstructs channels and causes softness; it produces itching of the limbs, abdominal swelling, discoloration, blood disorders, wind disorders, bile and blood disorders, impotence, and diseases of the senses.
व्योषशिग्रूमूलकं देवदारु च कुष्ठकम् । लशुनं वल्गुजी फलं मुस्तागुग्गुलुलाङ्गली ॥ १,१७३.
Long pepper, horse-radish root, devadāru, kuṣṭha, garlic, valgujī fruit, mustā, guggulu, and lāṅgalī—
कटुको दीपनः शोधी कुष्ठकण्डूकफान्तकृत् । स्थौल्यालस्यक्रिमिहरः शुक्रमेदोविरोधनः । एकोऽत्यर्थं सेव्यमानः भ्रमदाहादिकृद्भवेत् ॥ १,१७३.
The pungent taste is kindling, purifying, destroys skin diseases, itching, and phlegm; it removes obesity, laziness, and worms, and opposes semen and fat; when used excessively, it causes dizziness, burning, and the like.
कृतमालः कीराणि हरिद्रेन्द्रयवास्तथा । स्वादुकण्टकवेत्राणि बृहतीद्वयशङ्खिनी ॥ १,१७३.
Kṛtamāla, kīrāṇi, turmeric, barley, sweet thorn, vetra, both bṛhatī and śaṅkhinī—
गुडूची चद्रवन्ती च त्रिवृन्मण्डूकपर्ण्यपि । कारवेल्लकवार्ताकुकरवीरकवासकाः ॥ १,१७३.
Guḍūcī, dravantī, trivṛt, maṇḍūkaparṇī, kāravella, brinjal, karavīra, and vāsaka—
रोहिणी शङ्खचूर्णं च कर्कोटो वै जयन्तिका । जातीवारुणकं निम्बो ज्योतिष्मती पुनर्नवा ॥ १,१७३.
Rohiṇī, conch powder, karkoṭa, jayantikā, jātī, vāruṇaka, nimbu, jyotiṣmatī, and punarnavā—
तिक्तो रसश्छेदनः स्याद्रोचनी दीपनस्तथा । शोधनो ज्वरतृष्णाघ्नो मूर्छाकण्ठार्तिकादिजित् ॥ १,१७३.
The bitter taste is cutting, cleansing, and kindling; it is purifying, relieves fever and thirst, and conquers fainting, throat pain, and similar ailments.
विण्मूत्रक्लेदसंशोषो ह्यत्यर्थं स च सेवितः । हनुस्तम्भाक्षेपकार्तिशिरः शूलब्रणादिकृत् ॥ १,१७३.
When used excessively, it dries up feces and urine; it causes stiffness of the jaw, convulsions, pain, headache, and wounds.
त्रिफलासल्लकीजम्बु आम्रातकवचादिकम् । तिन्दुकं वकुलं शालं पालङ्कीमुद्गचिल्लकम् ॥ १,१७३.
Triphala, sallakī, jambu, āmrātaka, vacā, tinduka, vakula, śāla, pālaṅkī, mudga, and cillaka—
कषायो ग्राहको रोपी स्तम्भनक्लेदशोषणः । एकोऽत्यर्थं सेव्यमानो हृदये चाथ पीडकः । मुखशोषज्वराध्मानमन्यास्तम्भादिकारकः ॥ १,१७३.
The astringent taste is absorbent, healing, binding, and dries moisture; when consumed alone in excess, it causes pain in the heart, dryness of the mouth, fever, abdominal distension, and other forms of stiffness.
