कुष्ठा वचाभया ब्राह्मी मधुरा क्षौद्रसर्पिषा । वर्णायुः कान्तिजननं लेह्यं वालम्य दापयेत् ॥ १,१७२.
One should administer as a lickable medicine for children afflicted with vāla: kuṣṭha, vacā, abhaya, brāhmī, madhurā, with honey and ghee; this brings complexion, longevity, and charm.
स्तन्याभावे पयश्छागं गव्यं वा तद्गुणं पिवेत् । स्वेदनं नाग्निशोफार्ते मृदा स्यादग्नितप्तया ॥ १,१७२.
In the absence of breast milk, one should give goat's milk or cow's milk, which have similar qualities; for those suffering from swelling without heat, fomentation should be done with earth heated by fire.
लेहो मुस्तविपायाश्च वमिकासज्वरे पिबेत् । सुस्तशुण्ठीविषाविल्वकूटजैरतिसारनुत ॥ १,१७२.
A lickable preparation of musta and vipāyaka should be given in vomiting and fever; for diarrhea, a mixture of dry ginger, viṣā, vilva, and kūṭaja is effective.
मधु व्योषं मातुलुङ्गं हिक्काच्छर्दिनिवारणम् । कुष्ठेन्द्रयवसिद्धार्था निशा दूर्वा च कुष्ठजित् ॥ १,१७२.
Honey, vyoṣa, and mātuluṅga are remedies for hiccup and vomiting; kuṣṭha, indrayava, siddhārthaka, niśā, and dūrvā are curative for skin diseases.
महामुण्जितिकोजीच्यकाथैः स्नानं ग्रहापहम् । सप्तच्छदामयनिशाचन्दनैश्चानुलेपनम् ॥ १,१७२.
Bathing with decoctions of mahāmuñjā, tikta, and jīcya removes afflictions caused by planets; anointing with saptacchada, amaya, niśā, and candana is also prescribed.
शङ्खाब्जबीजरुद्राक्षवचालौहादिधारणम् । ओं कं टं यं गं वैनतेयाय नमः । ओं हों हां हः मन्त्रेण शान्तिर्वालानां मार्जनाद्वलिदानतः । ओं ह्रीं बालम्रहाद्वलिं गृह्णीत वालं मुञ्चत स्वाहा ॥ १,१७२.
Wearing conch, lotus seed, rudrākṣa, vacā, and iron is recommended; with the mantra: 'oṃ kaṃ ṭaṃ yaṃ gaṃ, obeisance to Vainateya; oṃ hoṃ hāṃ haḥ,' peace is achieved for children by sprinkling and tying threads; 'oṃ hrīṃ bālamrahādvaliṃ gṛhṇīta vālaṃ muñcata svāhā.'
तण्डुलाद्भिः शिरीपस्य पलं पीतं विषापहम् । तण्डुलाद्भिश्च वर्षाभ्वाः शुक्लायाः सर्पदंशनुत् ॥ १,१७२.
A pala of śirīṣa taken with rice water is an antidote to poison; and rice water with varṣābhvā or śuklā is a remedy for snakebite.
दध्याज्यं तण्डुलीयं च गृहधृमो निशा तथा । पिष्टं पानं तथा क्षौद्रं सिन्धृत्थस्य विपान्तकम् ॥ १,१७२.
Curd, ghee, rice water, gṛhadhṛma, niśā, and a paste or drink with honey are effective in counteracting the poison of sindhṛttha.
अङ्कोटमूलनिष्क्वाथः साज्यः पीतो विषान्तकः । यज्जराव्याधिविध्वंसि भेषजं तद्रसायनम् ॥ १,१७२.
A decoction of aṅkoṭa root with ghee, when drunk, is an antidote to poison; this medicine destroys old age and disease, and is considered a rejuvenator.
सिन्दूत्यरार्कराशुण्ठीकणामधुगुडैः क्रमात् । वर्षादिष्वभया सेव्या रसायनगुणौषिणा ॥ १,१७२.
Sindūti, arārka, rāśuṇṭhī, kaṇā, honey, and jaggery, taken in sequence, are to be used during the rainy season and so on, along with abhaya, by those seeking the qualities of rejuvenation.
ज्वरस्यान्तेऽभयां चैकां प्रभुङ्क्ते द्वे विभीतके । भुक्त्वा मध्वाज्यधात्रीणां चतुष्कं शतवर्षकृत् ॥ १,१७२.
At the end of fever, one should eat a single abhaya and two vibhītaka; after eating a group of four—honey, ghee, āmalakī, and dhātrī—one attains a lifespan of a hundred years.
पीताश्वगन्धा पयसा घृतेनाशेपरोगनुत् । मण्डूकपर्ण्याः स्वरसो विदार्याश्चामृतोपमः ॥ १,१७२.
Aśvagandhā taken with milk and ghee cures diseases of semen; the fresh juice of maṇḍūkaparṇī and vidārī is like nectar.
तिलधात्रीभृङ्गराजौ जग्ध्वा वर्षशती भवेत् । त्रिकटु त्रिफला वह्निर्गुडूची च शतावरी ॥ १,१७२.
After consuming sesame, dhātrī, and bhṛṅgarāja, one may live a hundred years; trikaṭu, triphalā, vahnī, guḍūcī, and śatāvarī are also to be used.
विडङ्गलोहचूर्णं तु मधुना सह रोगनुत् । त्रिफला च कणा शुण्ठी गुडूची च शतावरी ॥ १,१७२.
Powder of viḍaṅga and iron, taken with honey, cures diseases; triphalā, kaṇā, dry ginger, guḍūcī, and śatāvarī are also recommended.
विडङ्गभृङ्गराजादि भावितं सर्वरोगनुत् । चूर्णं विदार्या मध्वाज्यं लीढ्वा दश स्त्रियो व्रजेत् ॥ १,१७२.
Powder prepared with viḍaṅga, bhṛṅgarāja, and others, when taken with honey and ghee, destroys all diseases; after licking this, a man may approach ten women.
घृतं शतावरीकल्कैः क्षीरैर्दशगुणैः पचेत् । शर्करापिप्पलीक्षौद्रयुक्तं वा जारकं विदुः ॥ १,१७२.
Ghee cooked with a paste of śatāvarī and ten times its quantity of milk, and mixed with sugar, long pepper, and honey, is known as jāraka.
प्रतिमर्षोऽवपीडश्च नस्यं प्रवपनं तथा । शिरोविरेचनं चेति पञ्चकर्म च कथ्यते ॥ १,१७२.
Pratimarṣa, avapīḍa, nasya, pravapana, and śirovirecana—these five procedures are called pañcakarma.
मासैर्द्विसंख्यैर्माघाद्यैः क्रमात्षडृतवः स्मृताः । अग्निसेवामधुक्षीरविकृतीः परिपेवयेत् ॥ १,१७२.
The six seasons, beginning with Māgha, are reckoned as two months each in order; during these, one should avoid the use of fire, milk, and curdled milk products.
स्त्रीयुक्तः शिशिरे तद्वद्वसन्ते न दिवा स्वपेत् । त्यजेद्वर्षासु स्वप्नादीञ्छरदिन्दोश्च रश्मयः ॥ १,१७२.
In winter, one should sleep with a woman; in spring, one should not sleep during the day. In the rainy season, one should abandon sleep and similar habits, as well as the rays of the autumn moon.
पथ्यानि शालयो मुद्रा वर्षाम्भः क्वथितं पयः । निम्वातसीकुसुम्भानां शिग्रुसर्षपयोस्तथा ॥ १,१७२.
Wholesome foods are rice, mudra pulse, rainwater, boiled milk, and also neem, atasi, kusumbha, shigru, and mustard.
ज्योतिष्मतीमूलकानां तैलानि च हरन्ति हि । कृमिकुष्ठप्रमेहांश्च वातश्लेष्मशिरोरुजः ॥ १,१७२.
The oils of jyotishmati and other roots remove worms, skin diseases, urinary disorders, and also pains caused by wind, phlegm, and the head.
दाडिमामलकीकोलकरमर्द्पियालकम् । जम्बीरं नागग्गं च आम्रातककपिन्थकम् ॥ १,१७२.
Pomegranate, amalaki, kola, karamada, piyala, jambira, naganga, amrataka, and kapittha are mentioned.
पित्तलान्यनिलघ्नानि कफोत्क्लेशकराणिच । जलं जीमूतकेक्ष्वाकुकुटजाकृतबन्धनम् ॥ १,१७२.
These are beneficial for pitta and pacify vata, but aggravate kapha. Water prepared with jimutaka, ikshvaku, and kutaja is binding.
धामार्गवश्च संयोज्याः सर्वथा वमनेष्वमी । पूर्वाह्ने वमनायेते मदनेन्द्रयवी वचा ॥ १,१७२.
Dhamargava and arka should always be combined for emesis. For inducing vomiting in the forenoon, madana, indrava, and vacha are used.
मृदुकोष्टश्च पित्तेन खरो वातकफाश्रयात् । मध्यमः समदोषे स्यात्त्रिवृत्तिते विरेचनम् ॥ १,१७२.
A person with a soft bowel is affected by pitta; with hard bowels, by vata and kapha; one with moderate doṣas is suitable for purgation with trivrit.
शर्करामधुसंयुक्तं सैन्धवं नगरं त्रिवृत् । हरीतकीविहङ्गानि गोमूत्रेण विरेचनम् ॥ १,१७२.
Trivrit mixed with sugar and honey, saindhava salt, nagara, haritaki, and vihana, administered with cow's urine, acts as a purgative.
एरण्डतैलं त्रिफलाक्वाथश्च द्विगुणस्तथा । वातोल्बणेषु दोषेषु भोजयित्वाथ वामयेत् ॥ १,१७२.
Castor oil and a decoction of triphala, in double measure, should be given in cases of vata-dominant disorders, after feeding, to induce vomiting.
वंशादिनेत्रं कुर्वीत पडष्टद्वादशाङ्गुलम् । कर्कन्धृफलवच्छिद्रं वस्तिरुत्तानशायिने ॥ १,१७२.
One should make a bamboo tube, eight or twelve finger-breadths long, with a hole like the fruit of karkandhu, for enema in a person lying on his back.
निरूहदानेऽपि विधिरयमेवमुदीरितः । अर्धत्रिपट्पले मात्रा लघुमध्योत्तमः क्रमात् ॥ १,१७२.
This is the prescribed method for administering enemas; the dosage is half, three-quarters, or a full pala, classified as light, moderate, or strong.
पथ्याक्षवात्र्योकद्विचतुर्भाग रुगर्दनाः । शतवर्यसृताभृङ्गसिन्धुवारादिभाविताः ॥ १,१७२.
Wholesome akshavatri, in one, two, or four parts, mixed with rugardana, shatavari, srita, bhringa, sindhuvara, and other such substances, is used.
