दिवार्ककिरणैर्जुष्टं रात्रौ चैवेन्दुरश्मिभिः । सर्वदोषविनिर्मुक्तं तत्तुल्यं गगनाम्बुना ॥ १,१६९.
Water that has been exposed to the rays of the sun by day and the moon by night is free from all doshas, and is considered equal to rainwater.
उष्णं वारि ज्वरश्वासमेदोऽनिलकफापहम् । शृतं शीतत्रिदोषघ्नमुषितं तच्च दोषलम् ॥ १,१६९.
Hot water removes fever, breathlessness, fat, wind, and phlegm; boiled water destroys cold and all three doshas, but water left standing becomes harmful.
गोक्षीरं वातपित्तग्नं स्निग्धं गुरुरसायनम् । गव्याद्गुरुतरं स्निग्धं माहिष्वह्निनाशनम् ॥ १,१६९.
Cow's milk removes wind and bile, is unctuous, heavy, and rejuvenating; buffalo milk is heavier and more unctuous than cow's, and destroys digestive fire.
छागं रक्तातिसारघ्नं कासश्वासकफापहम् । चक्षुष्यं जीवनं स्त्रीणां रक्तपित्ते चनावनम् ॥ १,१६९.
Goat's milk removes bloody diarrhea, cough, breathlessness, and phlegm; it is good for the eyes, nourishing for women, and beneficial in bleeding disorders.
परं वातहरं वृष्यं पित्तश्लेष्मकरं दधि । दोषघ्नं मन्थजातन्तु मस्तु स्रोतोविशोधनम् ॥ १,१६९.
Curd is highly wind-pacifying and invigorating, but increases bile and phlegm; but buttermilk and whey destroy doshas and purify the channels.
ग्रहण्यर्शोऽर्दितार्तिघ्नं नवनीतं नवोद्धृतम् । विकाराश्च किलाटाद्या गुरवः कुष्ठहेतवः ॥ १,१६९.
Freshly churned butter removes disorders of the intestines, hemorrhoids, and pain; but old butter and similar substances are heavy and cause skin diseases.
परं ग्रहणीशोथार्शः पाण्ड्वतीसारगुल्मनुत् । त्रिदोषशमनं तक्रं कथितं पूर्वसूरिभिः ॥ १,१६९.
Buttermilk is said by ancient sages to be excellent for disorders of the intestines, swelling, hemorrhoids, anemia, diarrhea, and abdominal tumors, and it pacifies all three doshas.
वृष्यञ्च मधुरं सर्पिर्वातपित्तकफापहम् । गव्यं मेध्यञ्च चाक्षुष्यं संस्काराच्च त्रिदोषजित् ॥ १,१६९.
Ghee is invigorating and sweet, removes wind, bile, and phlegm; cow's ghee is good for the mind and eyes, and when properly prepared, conquers all three doshas.
अपस्मारगदोन्मादमूर्छाघ्नं संस्कृतङ्घृतम् । अजादीनाञ्च सर्पोषि विद्याद्गोक्षीरसद्गुणैः । कफवातहरं मूत्रं सर्वक्रिमिविषापहम् ॥ १,१६९.
Clarified butter, when prepared, removes epilepsy, poisoning, insanity, and fainting; ghee from goats and other animals is known to have the good qualities of cow's milk; urine removes wind and phlegm, and destroys all worms and poisons.
पाण्डुत्वोदरकुष्ठार्शः शोथगुल्मप्रमेहनुत् । वातश्लेष्महरं बल्यं तैलं कश्यं तिलोद्भवम् ॥ १,१६९.
Sesame oil removes anemia, abdominal swelling, skin diseases, hemorrhoids, swelling, abdominal tumors, and urinary disorders; it destroys wind and phlegm, strengthens the body, and is considered best.
सार्षपं कृमिपाण्डुघ्नं कफमेदोऽनिलापहम् । क्षौमं तैलमचक्षुष्यं पित्तहृद्वातनाशनम् ॥ १,१६९.
Mustard is destructive to worms and pallor, alleviates phlegm, fat, and wind; linen oil is beneficial for the eyes, removes bile, heart disorders, and wind.
अक्षजं कफपित्तघ्नं केश्यं त्वक्श्रोत्रतर्पणम् । त्रिदोषघ्नं मधु प्रोक्तं वातलञ्च प्रकीर्तितम् ॥ १,१६९.
Castor oil alleviates phlegm and bile, promotes hair growth, nourishes the skin and ears; honey is said to counter all three doshas, but is considered windy in effect.
हिक्काश्वासकृमिच्छर्दिमेहतृष्णाविषामहम् । इक्षवोरक्तपित्तघ्नो बल्या वृष्याः कफप्रदाः ॥ १,१६९.
Sugarcane alleviates hiccup, asthma, worms, vomiting, urinary disorders, thirst, and poisons; its juice removes blood and bile disorders, strengthens, is aphrodisiac, but increases phlegm.
फाणितं पित्तलं तव्रिं सुरा मत्स्यण्डिका लघुः । खण्डं वृष्यं तथा स्निग्धं स्वाद्वसृक्पित्तवातजित् ॥ १,१६९.
Molasses increases bile and is sharp; surā and fish brine are light; sugar candy is aphrodisiac, unctuous, sweet, conquers blood, bile, and wind.
वातपित्तहरो रूक्षो वातघ्नः कफकृद्गुडः । स पित्तघ्नः परः पथ्यः पुराणोऽसृक्प्रसादनः ॥ १,१६९.
Jaggery alleviates wind and bile, is dry, pacifies wind, but produces phlegm; old jaggery especially removes bile, is wholesome, and purifies the blood.
रक्तिपित्तहरा वृष्या सस्नेहा गडशर्करा । सर्वपित्तकरं मद्यमम्लत्वात्कफवातजित् ॥ १,१६९.
Sugar mixed with ghee removes blood and bile disorders, is aphrodisiac; medium-aged sugar, due to its sourness, produces all types of bile, but conquers phlegm and wind.
रक्तपित्तकरास्तीक्ष्णास्तथा सौवीरजातयः । पाचनो दीपनः पथ्यो मण्डः स्याद्भृष्टतण्डुलः ॥ १,१६९.
Very sharp and freshly made vinegars produce blood and bile disorders; rice gruel made from roasted rice is digestive, kindles appetite, and is wholesome.
वातानुलोमनी लघ्वी पेया वस्तिविशोधनी । सतक्रदाडिमव्योषा सगुडा मधुपिप्पली ॥ १,१६९.
Thin gruel is light, promotes downward movement of wind, cleanses the bladder; when prepared with satakra, pomegranate, long pepper, jaggery, honey, and pippali, it is beneficial.
इन्तीयं सुकृता पेया कासश्वा सप्रवाहिकाः । पायसः कफकृद्बल्यः कृशरा वातनाशिनी ॥ १,१६९.
Well-prepared thin gruel is suitable for cough, asthma, and diarrhea; rice cooked in milk increases phlegm and strength, while krishara destroys wind.
सुधौतः प्रस्त्रुतः स्निग्धः सुखोष्णो लघुरोचनः । कन्दमूलफलेहैः साधितो बृंहणोगुरुः ॥ १,१६९.
Well-washed, strained, and unctuous rice, served pleasantly warm and light, prepared with roots, fruits, and tubers, is nourishing but heavy.
ईषदुष्णसेवनाच्च लघुः सूपः सुसाधितः । स्विन्न निष्पीडितं शाकं हितं स्नेहादिसंस्कृतम् ॥ १,१६९.
Soup that is slightly warm and well-cooked is light; boiled and pressed vegetables, prepared with fats and similar substances, are wholesome.
दाडिमामलकैर्यूषो वह्निकृद्वातपित्तहा । श्वासकासप्रतिश्यायकफघ्नो मलकैः कृतः ॥ १,१६९.
Soup made from pomegranate and amalaki kindles digestive fire, alleviates wind and bile; when prepared with radish, it removes phlegm, and relieves breathlessness, cough, and nasal disorders.
यवकोलकुलत्थानां यूषः कण्ठ्योऽनिलापहः । मुद्गामलकजो ग्राही श्लेष्मपित्तविनाशनः ॥ १,१६९.
Soup of barley, jujube, and horse gram is beneficial for the throat and removes wind; soup made from green gram and amalaki is binding and destroys phlegm and bile.
सगुडं दधि वातघ्नं सक्तवो रूक्षवातुलाः । घृतपूर्णोऽग्निकारी स्याद्वृष्या गुर्वो च शष्कुली ॥ १,१६९.
Curds with jaggery pacify wind; saktava are dry and windy; śaṣkulī filled with ghee kindles digestive fire, is aphrodisiac, and heavy.
बृंहणाः सामिषा भक्ष्यपिष्ट का गुखः स्मृताः । तैलसिद्धाश्च दृष्टिघ्नास्तोयस्विन्नाश्च दुर्जराः ॥ १,१६९.
Meat-based foods are nourishing; baked flour cakes are considered difficult to digest; those prepared with oil are good for the eyes, but those cooked in water are hard to digest.
अत्युष्णा मण्डकाः पथ्याः शीतला गुखो मताः । अनुपानञ्च पानीयं श्रमतृष्णादिनाशनम् ॥ १,१६९.
Very hot gruels are wholesome; cool flour cakes are considered beneficial; water as a drink after meals removes fatigue, thirst, and similar conditions.
अन्नपानादिना रक्षा कृत्स्याद्रोगवर्जितः । अनुष्णः शिखिकण्ठाभो विषञ्चैव विवर्णकृत् ॥ १,१६९.
By proper regulation of food and drink, one remains free from disease; lukewarm water resembling peacock's throat in color, and poison, cause discoloration.
गन्धस्पर्शरसास्तीव्राभोक्तुश्च स्यान्मनोव्यथा । आघ्राणे चाक्षिरोगः स्यादसाध्यश्च भिषग्वरैः । वेपथुर्जृम्भणाद्यं स्याद्विषस्यैतत्तु लक्षणम् ॥ १,१६९.
Strong smells, touch, and tastes cause mental distress to the eater; inhaling them may cause eye disease, which is incurable by even the best physicians; trembling, yawning, and similar symptoms are signs of poison.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १७० धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । ज्वरोऽष्टधा पृथग्द्वन्द्वसंघातागन्तुजः स्मृतः । मुस्तपर्पटकोशीरचन्दनोदीच्यनागरैः । शृतशीतं जलं दद्यात्पिपासाज्वरशान्तये ॥ १,१७०.
Dhanvantari said: Fever is considered to be of eight kinds, arising separately, in pairs, or from external causes. To relieve thirst and fever, one should give water that has been boiled with musta, parpaṭaka, uśīra, sandalwood, uḍīcya, and nāgara, and then cooled.
नागरं देवकाष्ठञ्च धान्याकं बृहतीद्वयम् । दद्यात्पाचनकं पूर्वं ज्वरिताय ज्वरापहम् ॥ १,१७०.
Nāgara, devadāru, dhānyaka, and both kinds of bṛhatī should first be given as a digestive to the feverish patient, for it removes fever.
