रजोवृद्धिस्तापनञ्च तथा चानाहमेहनम् । श्लेष्मणा प्रावृते प्राणे नादः स्नोतोऽवरोधनम् ॥ १,१६७.
Increase of menstrual flow, heat, and retention of urine occur. When breath is obstructed by phlegm, there is sound, snoring, and blockage.
ष्ठीवनञ्चैव सस्वेदश्वासनिः श्वाससंग्रहः । उदाने गुरुगात्रत्वमरुचिर्वाक्स्वरग्रहः ॥ १,१६७.
Spitting, sweating, difficulty in breathing, and accumulation of breath occur. When udāna is affected, there is heaviness of the limbs, loss of appetite, and hoarseness of voice.
बलवर्णप्रणाशश्चा पाने पर्वास्थिसंग्रहः । गुरुताङ्गेषु सर्वेषु स्थूलत्वञ्चागतं भृशम् ॥ १,१६७.
Loss of strength and color, accumulation in joints and bones, heaviness in all limbs, and pronounced corpulence occur.
समानेऽतिक्रियाज्ञत्वमस्वेदो मन्दवह्निता । अपाने सकलं मूत्रं शकृतः स्यात्प्रवर्तनम्? ॥ १,१६७.
When samāna is affected, there is ignorance of proper actions, absence of sweating, and weak digestive fire. When apāna is affected, there is complete expulsion of urine and feces.
इति द्वाविंशतिविधं वातरक्तामयं विदुः । प्राणादयस्तथान्योऽन्यं समाक्रान्ता यथाक्रमम् ॥ १,१६७.
Thus, the disorder known as vātarakta is understood to be of twenty-two types. The vital breaths and others are afflicted by each other in succession.
सर्वेऽपि विंशतिविधं विद्यादावरणञ्च यत् । हृल्लासोच्छ्वाससंरोधः प्रतिश्यायः शिरोग्रहः ॥ १,१६७.
All should know the twenty types of obstruction. There is palpitations, suppression of breath, cold, and headache.
हृद्रोगो मुखशोषश्च प्राणेनापान आवृते । उदानेनावृते प्राणे भवेद्धै बलसंक्षयः ॥ १,१६७.
Heart disease and dryness of the mouth occur when prāṇa is obstructed by apāna. When prāṇa is obstructed by udāna, there is loss of strength.
विचारणेन विभजेत्सर्वमावरणं भिषक् । स्थानान्यपेक्ष्य वातानां वृर्धिहानिं च कर्मणाम् ॥ १,१६७.
By examination, the physician should distinguish all obstructions, considering the locations of the winds, their increase and decrease, and their actions.
प्राणादीनाञ्च पञ्चानां पित्तमावरणं मिथः । पित्तादीनामावसतिर्मिश्राणां मिश्रितैश्च तैः ॥ १,१६७.
Obstruction of pitta occurs mutually among the five vital airs, and the residence of pitta and others is mixed with those elements.
मिश्रैः पित्तादिभिस्तद्वन्मिश्राण्यपित्वनेकधा । तांल्लक्षयेदवहितो यथास्वं लक्षणोदयात् ॥ १,१६७.
With mixtures of pitta and others, similarly, mixed disorders arise in many ways. The attentive physician should recognize them according to their characteristic manifestations.
शनैः शनैश्चोपशयान्दृढानपि मुहुर्मुहुः । विशेषाज्जीवितं प्राण उदानो बलमुच्यते । स्यात्तयोः पीडनाद्धनिरायुषञ्च बलस्य च ॥ १,१६७.
Gradually, by repeated application of remedies, even strong obstructions are alleviated. Especially, prāṇa and udāna are said to be life and strength; when these are afflicted, there is loss of life and strength.
आवृता वायवोऽज्ञाता ज्ञाता वा स्थानविच्युताः । प्रयत्नेनापि दुः साध्या भवेयुर्वानुपद्रवाः ॥ १,१६७.
Obstructed winds, whether unknown or known but displaced from their locations, are difficult to cure even with effort, and may be accompanied by complications.
विद्रधिप्लीहहृद्रोगगुल्माग्निसदनादयः । भवन्त्युपद्रवास्तेषामावृतानामुपेक्षया ॥ १,१६७.
Abscesses, spleen disorders, heart disease, abdominal tumors, and fire-related ailments arise as complications for those afflicted, due to neglect.
निदानं सुश्रुत ! मया आत्रेयोक्तं समीरितम् । सर्वरोगविवेकाय नराद्यायुः प्रवृद्धये ॥ १,१६७.
O Suśruta, the cause has been explained by me, as spoken by Ātreya, for the discernment of all diseases and the advancement of human life.
एवं विज्ञाय रोगादींश्चिकित्सामथ वै चरेत् । त्रिफला सर्वरोगघ्नी मध्वाज्यगुडसंयुता ॥ १,१६७.
Thus understanding the diseases, one should then undertake treatment; Triphalā, combined with honey, ghee, and jaggery, is a remedy for all diseases.
सव्योषा त्रिफला वापि सर्वरोगप्रमर्दिनी । शतावरीगुडूच्यग्निविडङ्गेन युताथवा ॥ १,१६७.
Triphalā with long pepper, or even alone, destroys all diseases; alternatively, mixed with śatāvarī, guḍūcī, fire, and viḍaṅga.
शतावरी गुडूच्यग्निः शुण्ठीमूषलिका बला । पुनर्नवा च बृहती निर्गुण्डी निम्बपत्रकम् ॥ १,१६७.
Śatāvarī, guḍūcī, fire, dry ginger, mūṣalikā, balā, punarnavā, bṛhatī, nirguṇḍī, and neem leaves.
भृङ्गराजश्चामलकं वासकस्तद्रसेन वा । भाविता त्रिफला सप्तवारमेखमथापिवा ॥ १,१६७.
Bhṛṅgarāja, āmalaka, vāsaka, or their juices; Triphalā processed seven times, or even once.
पूर्वोक्तश्च यथालाभयुक्तैश्चूर्णञ्च मोदकः । वटिका घृततैलं वा कषायो शोषरोगनुत् । पलं पलार्धकं वापि कर्षं कर्षार्धमेव वा ॥ १,१६७.
As previously mentioned, according to availability, powder, sweet balls, tablets, ghee, oil, or decoction counteract wasting diseases; a weight of one pala, half a pala, one karṣa, or even half a karṣa.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६८ निदानं समाप्तम् । धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । सर्वरोगहरं सिद्धं योगसारं वदाम्यहम् । शृणु सुश्रुतं संक्षेपात्प्राणिनां जीवहेतवे ॥ १,१६८.
The section on causes is concluded in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, chapter 168. Dhanvantari spoke: I declare the essence of a perfected remedy that removes all diseases; listen, O Suśruta, in brief, for the sake of the life of living beings.
कषायकटुतिक्ताम्लरूक्षाहारादिभोजनात् । चिन्ताव्यवयव्यायामभयशोकप्रजागरात् ॥ १,१६८.
From food that is astringent, pungent, bitter, sour, dry, and similar, as well as from worry, sexual activity, exercise, fear, grief, and sleeplessness.
उच्चैर्भाषातिभाराच्च कर्मयोगातिकर्षणात् । वायुः कुप्यति पर्जन्ये जीर्णान्ने दिनसंक्षये ॥ १,१६८.
From loud speech, excessive weight, strenuous activity, and overexertion, wind is aggravated during storms, after digestion, and at the end of the day.
उष्णाम्ल लवणक्षारकटुकाजीर्णभोजनात् । तीक्ष्णातपाग्निसन्तापमद्यक्रोधनिषेवणात् ॥ १,१६८.
From hot, sour, salty, alkaline, pungent, and indigestible foods, intense heat, fire, distress, alcohol, and anger, bile is aggravated.
विदाहकाले भुक्तस्य मध्याह्ने जलदात्यये । ग्रीष्मकालेर्ऽद्धरात्रेऽपि पित्तं कुप्यति देहिनः ॥ १,१६८.
At the time of burning, after eating, at midday, after the end of clouds, in summer, and at midnight, bile is aggravated in the body.
स्वाद्वम्ललवणस्निग्धगुरुशीतातिभोजनात् । नवान्नपिच्छिलानूपमांसादेः सेवनादपि ॥ १,१६८.
From sweet, sour, salty, oily, heavy, and cold foods, as well as from eating new rice, slimy foods, fish, and meat.
अव्यायाम दिवास्वप्नशय्यासनसुखादिभिः । कफप्रदोषो भुक्ते च वसन्ते च प्रकुप्यति ॥ १,१६८.
From lack of exercise, daytime sleep, comfort of bed and seat, and similar pleasures, phlegm is aggravated after eating and in spring.
देहपारुष्यसंकोचतोदविष्टम्भकादयः । तथा च सुप्ता रोमहर्षस्तम्भनशोषणम् ॥ १,१६८.
Roughness of the body, contraction, obstruction, and similar symptoms; likewise, numbness, goosebumps, stiffness, and dryness.
श्यामत्वमङ्गविश्लेषबलमायासवर्धनम् । वायोर्लिङ्गानि तैर्युक्तं रोगं वातात्मकं वदेत् ॥ १,१६८.
Darkness of complexion, separation of limbs, weakness, and increased fatigue are signs of wind; a disease with these should be called wind-based.
दाहोष्मपादसंक्लेदकोपरागपरिश्रमाः । कट्वम्लशववैगन्ध्यस्वेदमूर्छातितृट्भ्रमाः ॥ १,१६८.
Burning, heat, moistening of feet, redness, exhaustion, bitterness, sourness, foul smell, sweating, fainting, excessive thirst, and dizziness.
हारिद्रं हरितत्वञ्च पित्तलिङ्गान्वितैर्नरः । देहे स्निग्धत्वमाधुर्यचिरकारित्वबन्धनम् ॥ १,१६८.
Yellowing, greenness, and other signs of bile; in the body, oiliness, sweetness, prolonged actions, and binding.
