रूक्षः सवेदनः कृष्णः सोऽसाध्यः स्याच्छिरोग्रहः । तनुं गृहीत्वा वायुश्च स्नायुस्तथैव च ॥ १,१६६.
When the body is rough, painful, and dark, it is considered incurable and involves the head; the wind, sinews, and body are all affected.
पक्षमन्यतरं हन्ति पक्षाघातः स उच्यते । कृत्स्नस्य कायस्यार्धं स्यादकर्मण्यमचेतनम् ॥ १,१६६.
If one wing is destroyed, it is called wing paralysis; half the body becomes inactive and insensible.
एकाङ्गरोगतां केचिदन्ये कक्षरुजां विदुः । सर्वाङ्गरोधः स्तम्भश्च सर्वकायाश्रितेऽनिले ॥ १,१६६.
Some recognize disease affecting a single limb, others know pain in the armpit; complete immobility and stiffness occur when wind pervades the whole body.
शुद्धवातकृतः पक्षः कृच्छ्रसाध्यतमो मतः । कृच्छ्रश्चान्येन संसृष्टो विवृद्धः क्षयहेतुकः ॥ १,१६६.
Paralysis caused purely by wind is considered extremely difficult to cure; when combined with other factors, it increases and leads to wasting.
आमबद्धायनः कुर्यात्संस्तभ्याङ्गं कफान्वितः । असाध्य एव सर्वो हि भवेद्दण्डापतानकः ॥ १,१६६.
When the channels are blocked by undigested matter and phlegm, the limbs become rigid; in such cases, the condition called daṇḍāpatānaka is always incurable.
अंसमूलोत्थितो वायुः शिराः संकुच्य तत्रगः । बहिः प्रस्यन्दितहरं जनयत्येव बाहुकम् ॥ १,१६६.
When wind arises from the root of the shoulder and contracts the veins there, it causes external discharge and produces disease in the arm.
तलं प्रत्यङ्गुलीनां यः कण्डरा बाहुपृष्ठतः । बाह्वोः कर्मक्षयकरी विपूची वेति सोच्यते ॥ १,१६६.
When the tendons at the base of the fingers and on the back of the arm are affected, it causes loss of function in the arms; this is called vipūcī.
वायुः कट्याश्रितः सक्थ्नः कण्डरामाक्षैपेद्यदा । तदा खञ्जो भवेज्जन्तुः पङ्गुः सक्थ्नोर्द्वयोर्वधात् ॥ १,१६६.
When wind situated in the hip damages the tendons of the thighs, the person becomes lame; if both thighs are affected, he becomes crippled.
कम्पते गमनारम्भे खञ्जन्निव च गच्छति । कलायखञ्जं तं विद्यान्मुक्तसन्धिप्रबन्धनम् ॥ १,१६६.
He trembles when beginning to walk and moves as if limping; this is known as kalāyakhañja, caused by loosened joints and ligaments.
शीतोष्णद्रवसंसुष्कगुरुस्निग्धैश्च सेवितैः । जीर्णाजीर्णे तथायासक्षोभस्निग्धप्रजागरैः ॥ १,१६६.
By consuming cold, hot, liquid, dry, heavy, and oily foods, whether digested or undigested, and through exertion, agitation, oily foods, and sleeplessness—
श्लेष्मभेदः समये परमत्यर्थसंचितम् । अभिभूयेतरं दोषं शरीरं प्रतिपद्यते ॥ १,१६६.
When phlegm accumulates excessively at the proper time, it overpowers the other humors and spreads throughout the body.
सक्थ्यस्थीनि प्रपूर्यान्तः श्लेष्मणा स्तम्भितेन तत् । तदास्थि स्नाति तेनोरोस्तथा शीतानिलेन तु ॥ १,१६६.
When phlegm fills and stiffens the bones of the thighs, the bone and sinew are affected, and the thigh becomes cold due to wind.
श्यामाङ्गमङ्गस्तैमित्यतन्द्रामूर्छारुचिज्वरैः । तमूरुस्तम्भमित्याह बाह्यवातमथापरे ॥ १,१६६.
With dark limbs, stiffness, lethargy, fainting, pain, and fever, this is called thigh stiffness; others call it external wind.
वातशोणितसंशोथो जानुमध्ये महारुजः । ज्ञेयः क्रोष्टुकशीर्षस्तु स्थूलक्रोष्टुकशीर्षवत् ॥ १,१६६.
Swelling caused by wind and blood in the knee, accompanied by severe pain, is known as kroṣṭukaśīrṣa, resembling a large jackal's head.
रुक्पादविषमन्यस्ते श्रमाद्वा जायते यदा । वातेन गुल्फमाक्षित्य तमाहुर्वातकण्टकम् ॥ १,१६६.
When pain and unevenness arise in the feet due to fatigue, and wind affects the ankle, it is called vātakaṇṭaka.
पार्ष्णिप्रत्यङ्गुलीनाभौ कण्ठे वा मारुतार्दिते । सतिक्षेपं निगृह्णाति गृध्रसीं तां प्रचक्षते ॥ १,१६६.
When wind afflicts the heel, fingers, navel, or neck, it restricts movement; this is called gṛdhrasī.
हृष्येते चरणौ यस्य भवेतां चापि सुप्तकौ । पादहर्षः स विज्ञेयः कफमारुतकोपजः ॥ १,१६६.
When a person's feet become thrilled or numb, it is known as pādaharṣa, arising from the aggravation of phlegm and wind.
पादयोः कुरुते दाहं पित्तासृक्सहितोऽनिलः । विशेषतश्चङ्क्रमतः पाददाहं तमादिशेत् ॥ १,१६६.
When wind, combined with bile and blood, causes burning in the feet, especially while walking, this burning of the feet should be recognized.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६७ धन्वन्तरीरुवाच । वातरक्तनिदानं ते वक्ष्ये सुश्रुत तच्छृणु । विरुद्धाध्यशनक्रोधदिवास्वप्नप्रजागरैः ॥ १,१६७.
Dhanvantari said: I will explain to you, Sushruta, the causes of vātarakta; listen. It arises from incompatible and excessive eating, anger, sleeping during the day, and staying awake at night.
प्रायशः सुकुमाराणां मिथ्याहारविहारिणाम् । स्थूलानां सुखिनां चापि कुप्यते वातशोणितम् ॥ १,१६७.
Vātaśoṇita generally afflicts those who are delicate, who eat and live improperly, who are obese, and those who live in comfort.
अग्निघातादशुद्धेश्च नृणामसृजि दूषिते । वातलैः शीतलैर्वायुर्वृद्धः क्रुद्धो विमार्गगः ॥ १,१६७.
When the blood becomes impure in people due to the effect of heat or improper cleansing, and is disturbed by vāta or cold winds, vāta increases, becomes agitated, and moves abnormally.
तादृशैवासृजा रुद्धः प्राक्तदैव प्रदूषयेत् । तथा वातो गुदे पीडां बलासं वातशोणितम् ॥ १,१६७.
Obstructed by such blood, vāta first corrupts it, and then in the rectum causes pain or produces vātarakta.
संस्तभ्य जनयेत्पूर्वं पश्चात्सर्वत्र धावति । विशेषाद्वमनाद्यैश्च प्रलम्बस्तस्य लक्षणम् ॥ १,१६७.
First it causes stiffness, then it spreads everywhere; especially, symptoms like heaviness and others such as vomiting are its signs.
भविष्यतः कुष्ठसमं तथा साम्बुदसंज्ञकम् । जानुजङ्घोरुकट्यंसहस्तपादाङ्गसन्धिषु ॥ १,१६७.
Later, it becomes like leprosy, called sāmbuda, affecting the knees, calves, thighs, hips, shoulders, arms, hands, feet, and joints.
कण्डूस्फुरणनिस्तोदभेदगौरवसुप्तताः । भूत्वा भूत्वा प्रशाम्यन्ति मुहुराविर्भवन्ति च ॥ १,१६७.
Itching, twitching, pricking, splitting pain, heaviness, and numbness arise and subside repeatedly, appearing again and again.
पादयोर्मूलमास्थाय कदाचिद्धस्तयोरपि । आखोरिव विलं क्रुद्धः कृत्स्नं देहं बिधावति ॥ १,१६७.
Sometimes, starting at the soles of the feet or even the hands, it runs through the whole body in a rage, like a rat.
त्वङ्मांसाश्रयमत्तानं तत्पूर्वं जायते ततः । कालान्तरेण गम्भीरं सर्वधातूनभिद्रवेत् ॥ १,१६७.
At first it is confined to the skin and flesh, but later, over time, it becomes deep and invades all the body tissues.
कट्यादिसंयतस्थाने त्वक्ताम्रश्यावलोहिताः । श्वयथुर्ग्रथितः पाकः स वायुश्चास्थिमज्जसु ॥ १,१६७.
In places like the hips, the skin becomes coppery, dark, or red; there is swelling, hard lumps, and suppuration, and vāyu enters the bones and marrow.
छिन्दन्निव चरत्यन्तश्चकीकुर्वंश्च वेगवान् । करोति खञ्जं पङ्गुं वा शरीरं सर्वतश्चरन् ॥ १,१६७.
Inside, it moves as if cutting, making a creaking sound, moving swiftly; as it spreads through the body, it causes lameness or crippling.
वाताधिकेऽधिकं तत्र शूलस्फुरणभञ्जनम् । शोथस्य रौक्ष्यं कृष्णत्वं श्यावतावृद्धिहानयः ॥ १,१६७.
When vāta predominates, there is intense pain, twitching, breaking sensations, dryness of swelling, blackness, and increase or decrease of discoloration.
