स्पर्शैकाहारसंगादिसेवनात्प्रायशो गदाः । एकशय्यासनाच्चैव वस्त्रमाल्यानुलेपनात् ॥ १,१६४.
Diseases generally arise from contact, sharing food, and other interactions, as well as from sharing beds, seats, clothes, garlands, and ointments.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६५ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । क्रिमयश्च द्विधा प्रोक्ता बाह्यभ्यन्तरभेदतः । बहिर्मलकफासृग्विट्जन्मभेदाच्चतुर्विधाः ॥ १,१६५.
Dhanvantari said: Worms are described as twofold, distinguished as external and internal; externally, they are of four kinds, arising from dirt, phlegm, blood, and feces.
नामतो विंशतिविधा बाह्यास्तत्र मलोद्भवाः । तिलप्रमाणसंस्थानवर्णाः केशाम्बराश्रयाः ॥ १,१६५.
By name, the external worms are twenty kinds; among them, those arising from dirt are the size and shape of sesame seeds, and reside in hair and clothing.
बहुपादाश्च सूक्ष्माश्च यूका लिक्षाश्च नामतः । द्विधा ते कोष्ठपिडिकाः कण्डूगण्डान्प्रकुर्वते ॥ १,१६५.
They are many-legged and subtle, called lice and nits by name; of two types, they dwell in the body and cause itching and swelling.
कुष्ठैकहेतवोऽन्तर्जाः श्लेष्मजा बाह्यसम्भवाः । मधुरान्नगुडक्षीरदधिमत्स्यनवौदनैः ॥ १,१६५.
The sole cause of leprosy is internal worms, which arise from phlegm externally, and from sweet foods, molasses, milk, curd, fish, and fresh rice.
कफादामाशये जाता वृद्धाः सर्पन्ति सर्वतः । पृथुब्रध्ननिभाः केचित्केचिद्गण्डूपदोपमाः ॥ १,१६५.
Born in the stomach from phlegm, they grow and move everywhere; some resemble broad threads, others are like swelling lumps.
रूढधान्याङ्कुराकारास्तनुदीर्घास्तथाणवः । श्वेतास्ताम्रावभासाश्च नामतः सप्तधा तु ते ॥ १,१६५.
Some are shaped like sprouted grains, thin and long, and small; they are white or coppery in appearance, and by name, they are seven kinds.
अन्त्रादा उदरावेष्टा हृदयादा महागुदाः । च्युरवो दर्भकुसुमाः सुगन्धास्ते च कुर्वते ॥ १,१६५.
Some arise from the intestines, encircle the abdomen, some from the heart, some from the anus; they are expelled, resembling grass flowers, fragrant, and they cause effects.
हृल्लासमास्यश्रवणमविपाकमरोचकम् । मूर्छाच्छर्दिज्वरानाहकार्श्यक्षवथुपीनसान् ॥ १,१६५.
They cause nausea, mouth discharge, indigestion, loss of appetite, fainting, vomiting, fever, abdominal swelling, emaciation, sneezing, and nasal congestion.
रक्तवाहिशिरास्थानरक्तजा जन्तवोऽणवः । अपादा वृत्तताम्राश्च सौक्ष्म्यात्केचिददर्शनाः ॥ १,१६५.
Those born in blood vessels are minute creatures, without legs, round and coppery, and due to their subtlety, some are invisible.
केशादा रोमविध्वंसा रोमद्वीपा उदुम्बराः । षट्ते कुष्ठैककर्माणः सहसौरसमातरः ॥ १,१६५.
Arising from hair, they destroy hair, form hair islands, and are like figs; these six types are the sole cause of leprosy, together with the Sausura and Samatara.
पक्वाशये पुरीषोत्था जायन्तेऽथोविसर्पिणः । वृद्धास्ते स्युर्भवेयुश्च ते यदामाशयोन्मुखाः ॥ १,१६५.
Born in the large intestine from feces, they may also spread; when they grow, they move toward the stomach.
तदास्योद्गारनिः श्वामविड्गन्धानुविधायिनः । पृथुवृत्ततनुस्थूलाः श्यावपीतसितासिताः ॥ १,१६५.
Then, they cause foul breath, wheezing, and the smell of feces; they are broad, round, thick, and may be dark, yellow, white, or black.
ते पञ्चनाम्ना क्रिमयः ककेरुकमकेरुकाः । सौसुरादाः सशूलाख्या लेलिहा जनयन्ति हि ॥ १,१६५.
These worms are known by five names: Kakeruka, Makeruka, Sausura, Sashula, and Lelihā; they indeed produce offspring.
वङ्भेदशूलविष्टम्भकार्श्यपारुष्यपाण्डुताः । रोमहर्षाग्निसदनं गुदकण्डूंर्विमार्गगाः ॥ १,१६५.
Splitting of speech, piercing pain, stiffness, emaciation, roughness, pallor; horripilation, sensation of heat in the rectum, itching of the anus, and abnormal passage of stool.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६६ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । वातव्याधिनिदानं ते वक्ष्ये सुश्रुत तच्छृणु । सर्वथानर्थकथने विघ्न एव च कारणम् ॥ १,१६६.
Dhanvantari spoke: I will explain to you the origin of diseases caused by wind, O Suśruta, listen to this. In every account of misfortune, obstruction is indeed the cause.
अदृष्टदुष्टपवनशरीरमविशेषतः । स विश्वकर्मा विश्वात्मा विश्वरूपः प्रजापतिः ॥ १,१६६.
The unseen, corrupted wind affects the body indiscriminately; he is the universal creator, the soul of all, the one with the form of the universe, the lord of creatures.
स्रष्टा धाता विभुर्विष्णुः संहर्ता मृत्युरन्तकः । तद्वदुक्तं च यत्नेन यतितव्यमतः सदा ॥ १,१६६.
He is the creator, the sustainer, the pervader, Viṣṇu, the destroyer, death, and the end. Thus, what is spoken must always be pursued with effort.
तस्योक्ते दोषविज्ञाने कर्म प्राकृतवैकृतम् । समासव्यासतो दोषभेदानामवधार्य च ॥ १,१६६.
Upon knowing the faults described, one should discern the natural and altered actions, and, in summary and detail, ascertain the varieties of faults.
प्रत्येकं पञ्चधा वीरो व्यापारश्चेह वैकृतः । तस्योच्यते विभागेन सनिदानं सलक्षणम् ॥ १,१६६.
Each one, in five ways, the agent acts here in altered forms; its divisions, along with causes and characteristics, are explained.
धातुक्षयकरैर्वायुः क्रुद्धो नातिनिषेव्यते । चतुः स्नोतोऽवकाशेषु भूयस्तान्येव पूरयेत् ॥ १,१६६.
When wind, provoked by substances that deplete the bodily elements, is not properly attended to, it fills the four channels in the body even more.
तेभ्यस्तु दोषपूर्णेभ्यः प्रच्छाद्य विवरं ततः । तव वायुः सकृत्क्रुद्धः शूलानाहान्त्रकूजनम् ॥ १,१६६.
From those channels filled with faults, after blocking the openings, your wind, once provoked, produces colic, obstruction, and rumbling in the intestines.
मलरोधं स्वरभ्रंशं दृष्टिपृष्ठकटिग्रहम् । करोत्येव पुनः काये कृच्छ्रानन्यानुपद्रवान् ॥ १,१६६.
It causes retention of waste, loss of voice, stiffness of vision, back, and hips; again, in the body, it produces other severe afflictions.
आमाशयोत्थवमथुश्वासकासविषूचिकाः । कण्डूपरोधघर्मादिव्याधीनूर्ध्वञ्च नाभितः ॥ १,१६६.
Diseases arising from the stomach, such as vomiting, breathlessness, cough, cholera; obstruction, itching, heat, and other ailments above the navel.
श्रोत्रादीन्द्रियबाधां च त्वचि स्फोटनरूक्षताम् । चक्रेतीव्ररुजाश्वासगरामयविवर्णताः ॥ १,१६६.
It causes affliction of the sense organs like the ears, eruptions and roughness of the skin, intense pain, breathlessness, fever, and discoloration.
अन्त्रस्यान्तञ्च विष्टम्भमरुचिं कृशतां भ्रमम् । मांसमेदोगतग्रन्थिं चर्मादावुपकर्कशम् ॥ १,१६६.
It causes obstruction within the intestines, loss of appetite, emaciation, dizziness; nodules in muscle and fat, and hardness in the skin and elsewhere.
गुर्वङ्गन्तुद्यतेऽत्यर्थं दण्डमुष्टिहतं यथा । अस्थिस्थः सक्थिसन्ध्यस्थिशूलं तीव्रञ्च लक्षयेत् ॥ १,१६६.
When heaviness arises in the limbs, as if struck by a staff or fist, the wind situated in the bones produces severe pain in the hip joints and bones.
मज्जस्थोऽस्थिषु चास्थैर्यमस्वप्नं यत्तदा रुजाम् । शुक्रस्य शीघ्रमुत्सङ्गसर्गान्विकृतिमेव वा ॥ १,१६६.
When wind is in the marrow, it causes instability in the bones, sleeplessness, and pain; in semen, it quickly causes abnormal emission or distortion.
तत्तद्गर्भस्थशुक्रस्थः शिरस्याध्मानरिक्ताता । तत्र स्थानस्थितः कुर्यात्क्रुद्धः श्वयथुकृच्छ्रताम् ॥ १,१६६.
When wind is in the embryo or semen, it causes swelling and emptiness in the head; when it remains in its place and is provoked, it produces severe swelling.
जलपूर्णदृतिस्पर्शं शोषं सन्धिगतोऽनिलः । सर्वाङ्गसंश्रयस्तोदभेदस्फुरणभञ्जनम् ॥ १,१६६.
When wind is in the joints, it causes a sensation of fullness, dryness, and touch like water; when it spreads throughout the body, it produces pain, splitting, twitching, and breaking.
