दूषयित्वा तु दीर्घानुवृत्तस्थूलखरात्मिकाम् । ग्रन्थीनां कुरुते मालां सरक्तान्तीव्ररुग्ज्वराम् ॥ १,१६३.
Having corrupted them, it forms a long, thick, rough chain of nodules, with intense pain and fever, all suffused with blood.
श्वासकासातिसारास्यशोषहिक्कावमिभ्रमैः । मोहवैवर्ण्यमूर्छाङ्गभङ्गग्निसदनैर्युताम् । इत्ययं ग्रन्थिवीसर्पः कफमारुतकोपजः ॥ १,१६३.
Accompanied by breathlessness, cough, diarrhea, dryness of mouth, hiccups, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, discoloration, fainting, limb-breaking, and loss of appetite; this is nodular spreading, arising from the aggravation of phlegm and wind.
कफपित्ताज्ज्वरः स्तम्भो निद्रा तन्द्रा शिरोरुजा । अङ्गावसादविक्षेंपौ प्रलापारोचकभ्रमाः ॥ १,१६३.
From phlegm and bile arise fever, stiffness, sleep, drowsiness, headache, weakness and trembling of limbs, delirium, loss of appetite, and dizziness.
मूर्छाग्निहानिर्भेदोऽस्थ्नां पिपासेन्द्रियगौरवम् । आमोपवेशनं लेपः स्रोतसां स च सर्पति ॥ १,१६३.
Fainting, loss of digestive fire, breaking of bones, thirst, heaviness of the senses, accumulation of impurities, and coating; it spreads through the channels.
प्रायेणामाशयं गृह्णन्नेकदेशं न चातिरुक् । पीडकैरवकीर्णोऽतिपीतलोहितपाण्डुरैः ॥ १,१६३.
Usually affecting the stomach, not excessively painful in one place, covered with pustules, extremely yellow, red, or pale.
स्निध्नोऽसितो मेचकाभो मलिनः शोथवान्गुरुः । गम्भीरपाकः प्रायोष्मस्पृष्टः क्लिन्नोंऽवदीर्यते ॥ १,१६३.
Sticky, black, resembling soot, dirty, swollen, heavy; deep maturation, mostly moist when touched by heat, it bursts open.
पक्ववच्छीर्णमांसश्च स्पष्टस्नायुशिरागणः । सर्वगो लक्षणैः सर्वेः सर्वगत्वक्समर्पणः । शवगन्धी च वीसर्पः कर्दमाख्यमुशन्ति तम् ॥ १,१६३.
Like ripened flesh, with exposed tendons and veins, affecting all parts with all symptoms, spreading everywhere, emitting the smell of a corpse; this spreading is called 'muddy'.
बाह्यहेतोः क्षतात्क्रुद्ध्वः सरक्तं पित्तमीरयन् । वीसर्पं मारुतः कुर्यात्कुलत्थसदृशैश्चितम् ॥ १,१६३.
Due to external causes, from injury, agitated blood and bile, wind produces spreading, marked by nodules resembling horse gram.
स्फोटैः शोथज्वररुजादाहाढ्यं श्यावशोणितम् । पथग्दोषैस्त्रयः साध्या द्वन्द्वजाश्चानुपद्रवाः ॥ १,१६३.
With eruptions, swelling, fever, pain, burning, dark blood; the three pathologies caused by the channels are curable, and those arising from dual causes are without complications.
असाध्याः कृतसर्वोत्थाः सर्वे चाक्रान्तमर्मणः । शीर्णस्नायुशिरामांसाः क्लिन्नाश्चशवगन्धयः ॥ १,१६३.
Incurable are those arising from all causes, and those that invade the vital spots; with ruptured tendons, veins, flesh, moist, and emitting the smell of a corpse.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६४ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । मिथ्याहारविहारेण विशेषेण विरोधिना । साधुनिन्दावधाद्युद्धहरणाद्यैश्च सेवितैः ॥ १,१६४.
Dhanvantari said: Especially due to improper eating and living, and by engaging in actions such as slandering the virtuous, neglect, fighting, and theft—
पाप्मभिः कर्मभिः सद्यः प्राक्तनैः प्रेरितामलाः । शिराः प्रपद्य तैर्युक्तास्त्वग्वसारक्तमामिषम् ॥ १,१६४.
—by sinful deeds, both recent and past, impure substances are driven into the veins; joined with these, they reach the skin, flesh, blood, and fat.
दूषयन्ति च संशोष्य निश्चरन्तस्ततो बहिः । त्वचः कुर्वान्ति वैवर्ण्यं शिष्टाः कुष्ठमुशन्तितम् ॥ १,१६४.
They corrupt these tissues, drying them up, and then emerge outward; they cause discoloration of the skin, and the remaining impurities manifest as leprosy and other skin diseases.
कालेनोपेक्षितं यत्स्यात्सर्वं कोष्ठानि तद्वपुः । प्रपद्य धातून्बाह्यान्तः सर्वान्संक्लेद्य चावहेत् ॥ १,१६४.
When neglected over time, all the bodily channels are affected; having entered all the tissues, both external and internal, they disturb and overflow them.
सस्वेदक्लेदसङ्कोचान्कृमीन् सूक्ष्मांश्चदारुणान् । लोमत्वक्स्नायुधमनीराक्रामति यथाक्रमम् ॥ १,१६४.
With sweat, moisture, and constriction, they produce minute and harsh worms, which successively invade the hair, skin, tendons, and vessels.
भस्माच्छादितवत्कुर्याद्बाह्यं कुष्ठमुदाहृतम् । कुष्ठानि सप्तधा दोषैः पृथग्द्वन्द्वैः समागतैः ॥ १,१६४.
It produces external leprosy, appearing as if covered with ash; leprosy is said to be of seven kinds, arising from the humors singly, in pairs, or all together.
सर्वेष्वपि त्रिदोषेषु व्यपदेशोऽधिकस्ततः । वातेन कुष्ठं कापालं पित्तेनौदुम्बरं कफात् ॥ १,१६४.
Among all the three humors, their combinations are further distinguished: leprosy from wind is called Kāpāla, from bile Udumbara, and from phlegm—
मण्डलाख्यं विचर्चो च ऋष्याख्यं वातपित्तजम् । चर्मैककुष्ठं किटिमं सिध्मालसविपादिकाः ॥ १,१६४.
—are Maṇḍala, Vicarcū, Ṛṣya, and those from wind and bile; Carma, Eka-kuṣṭha, Kiṭima, Sidhmā, Alasā, and Vipādikā.
वातश्लेष्मोद्भवाः श्लेष्मपित्ताद्दद्रूशतारुषी । पुण्डरीकं सविस्फोटं पामा चर्मदलं तथा ॥ १,१६४.
Those arising from wind and phlegm, and from phlegm and bile, are Dadru and Śatāruṣī; Puṇḍarīka, with blisters, Pāmā, and Carmadala as well.
सर्वेभ्यः काकणं पूर्वत्रिकं दद्रु सकाकणम् । पुण्डरीकर्यजिह्वे च महाकुष्ठानि सप्त तु ॥ १,१६४.
Of all these, Kākaṇa, Pūrvatrika, Dadru with Kākaṇa, Puṇḍarīka, Ryajihvā—these seven are the major types of leprosy.
अतिश्लक्ष्णखरस्पर्शस्वेदास्वेदविवर्णताः । दाहः कण्डूस्त्वचि स्वापस्तोदः कोचोन्नतिस्तमः ॥ १,१६४.
Excessively smooth or rough to the touch, with sweating or dryness, discoloration, burning, itching of the skin, numbness, pricking pain, swelling, and darkness—
व्रणानामधिकं शूलं शीघ्रोत्पत्तिश्चिरस्थितिः । रूढानामपि रूक्षत्वं निमित्तेऽल्पेऽतिकोपनम् ॥ १,१६४.
Severe pain in the sores, rapid onset and long duration, even when healed they remain rough; with slight cause, they flare up greatly.
रोमहर्षोऽसृजः कार्ष्ण्यं कुष्ठलक्षणमग्रजम् । कृष्णारुणकपालाभं यद्रूक्षं परुषं तनु ॥ १,१६४.
Goosebumps, blackness of the blood—these are early signs of leprosy; when it is black, red, dry, rough, and thin like a skull—
विस्तृताकृतिपर्यस्तन्दूषितैर्लोमभिश्चितम् । कापालं तोदबहुलं तत्कुष्ठं विषमं स्मृतम् ॥ १,१६४.
—spread out in shape, scattered with corrupted hairs, that is Kāpāla leprosy, marked by much pricking pain and considered irregular.
उदुम्बरफलाभासं कुष्ठमौदुम्बरं वदेत् । वर्तुलं बहुलकेत्युक्तं दाहरुजाधिकम् ॥ १,१६४.
Leprosy resembling the fruit of the Udumbara tree is called Audumbara; it is round, with thick edges, and marked by intense burning and pain.
असंच्छन्नमदरणं कृमिवत्स्यादुदुम्बरम् । स्थिरं सत्यानं गुरु स्निग्धं श्वेतरक्तं मलान्वितम् ॥ १,१६४.
Uncovered, not spreading, worm-infested like Udumbara; firm, true, heavy, oily, white or red, and accompanied by impurities.
अन्योन्यसक्तपुच्छूनबहुकण्डूस्नुतिकृमि । श्लक्ष्णपीताभासंयुक्तं मण्डलं परिकीर्तितम् ॥ १,१६४.
With tails attached to each other, much itching, discharge, and worms; smooth and yellowish in appearance, this is known as Maṇḍala.
सकण्डूपिटिका श्यावा सक्लेदा च विचर्चिका । परुषन्तत्ररक्तान्तमन्तः श्यामं समुन्नतम् ॥ १,१६४.
Vicarcikā is dark, with itching and pimples, moist; rough, with red inside, dark within, and raised.
ऋष्यजिह्वाकृतिप्रोक्तं ऋष्यजिह्वं बहुक्रिमि । हस्तिचर्मखरस्पर्शं चर्माख्यं कुष्ठमुच्यते ॥ १,१६४.
That which is described as having the appearance of a rishya-jihva (deer's tongue), with many worms, rough to the touch like elephant skin, is called 'carmākhya' leprosy.
अस्वेदञ्चमत्स्यशल्कसन्निभं किटिमं पुनः । रूक्षाग्निवर्णं दुः स्पर्शं कण्डूमत्परुषासितम् ॥ १,१६४.
Again, that which does not sweat, resembles fish scales, is dry, of fiery color, unpleasant to touch, itchy, rough, and grayish-black, is called 'kiṭima'.
