नीरातिवृद्धौ कठिनं शीतस्पर्शं गुरु स्थिरम् । त्रिदोषकोपने तैस्तैस्त्रिदोषजीनैतर्मलैः ॥ १,१६१.
With excessive increase, it becomes hard, cold to the touch, heavy, and firm; it provokes all three doṣas, and is tainted by impurities arising from those three doṣas.
सर्वदूषणदुष्टाश्च सरक्ताः सञ्चिता मलाः । कोष्ठं प्राप्य विकुर्वाणाः शोषमूर्छाभ्रमान्वितम् ॥ १,१६१.
All the impurities, corrupted by every kind of taint and mixed with blood, accumulate; reaching the abdomen, they undergo transformation, causing wasting, fainting, and dizziness.
कुर्युस्त्रिलिङ्गमुदरं शीघ्रपाकं सुदारुणम् । वर्धते तच्च सुतरां शीतवातप्रदर्शने ॥ १,१६१.
They produce the threefold type of abdominal disease, which matures quickly and is extremely severe; it increases especially upon exposure to cold and wind.
अत्यशनाच्च संक्षोभाद्यानपानादिचेष्ठितैः । अविहितैश्च पानाद्यैर्वमनव्याधिकर्षणैः ॥ १,१६१.
Due to overeating, agitation, improper food and drink, unsuitable beverages, and the strain of vomiting or other illnesses—
वामपार्श्वास्थितः प्लीहा त्युतस्थानो विवर्धते । शोणिताद्वा रसादिभ्यो विवृद्धो जनयेद्व्यथाम् ॥ १,१६१.
The spleen, situated on the left side, becomes enlarged from its place; when increased by blood or other bodily fluids, it causes pain.
सोऽष्ठीला चातिकठिनः प्रोन्नतः कूर्मपृष्ठवत्? । क्रमेण वर्धमानश्च कुक्षौ व्याततिमाहरेत् ॥ १,१६१.
It becomes hard as a stone, excessively firm, raised up like the back of a tortoise; gradually enlarging, it spreads across the abdomen.
श्वासकासपिपासास्यवैरस्याध्मानकज्वरैः । पाण्डुत्वमूर्छाछर्दित्वग्दाहमोहैश्च संयुतः ॥ १,१६१.
Accompanied by shortness of breath, cough, thirst, bad taste in the mouth, bloating, fever, pallor, fainting, vomiting, burning sensation, and confusion.
अरुणाभं विचित्राभं नीलहारिद्रराजितम् । उदावर्तेन चानाहमोहतृड्द्गहनज्वरैः ॥ १,१६१.
With a reddish or variegated appearance, tinged with blue and yellow; along with upward movement of wind, nausea, fainting, intense thirst, and persistent fever.
गौरवारुचिकाठिन्यैर्विघातभ्रमसंक्रमात् । प्लीहवद्दक्षिणात्पार्श्वात्कुर्याद्यकृदपि च्युतम् ॥ १,१६१.
Due to heaviness, loss of appetite, hardness, obstruction, and dizziness, the spleen may even shift from the left side to the right.
पक्वे भूते यकृति च सदा बद्धमलो गुदे । दुर्नामभिरुदावर्तैरन्यैर्वा पीडितो भवेत् ॥ १,१६१.
When the liver is affected and the feces are always retained in the rectum, one suffers from distressing symptoms with difficult names, or from other painful upward movements.
वर्चः पित्तकफान्बद्धान्करोति कुपितोऽनिलः । अपानो जठरे तेन संरुद्धो ज्वररुक्करः ॥ १,१६१.
When aggravated, the downward wind (apāna) in the abdomen binds the stool, bile, and phlegm, causing fever and pain.
काशश्वासोरुसद्गनं शिरोरुङ्नाभिपार्श्वरुक् । मलासंगोऽरुचिश्छर्दिरुदरे मलमारुतः ॥ १,१६१.
Cough, breathlessness, chest pain, headache, pain in the navel and sides, constipation, loss of appetite, vomiting—these are caused by the abdominal wind.
स्थिरनीलारुणशिराजालैरुदरमावृतम् । नाभेरुपरि च प्रायो गोपुच्छाकृति जायते ॥ १,१६१.
The abdomen becomes covered with firm, blue, and red veins; above the navel, a shape resembling a cow's tail often appears.
अस्थ्यादिशल्यै रन्यैश्च विद्धे चैवोदरे तथा । पच्यते यकृतादिश्च तच्छिद्रैश्च सरन्बहिः ॥ १,१६१.
When the abdomen is pierced by bone fragments or other foreign bodies, the liver and other organs begin to decay, and fluid flows out through those openings.
आम एव गुदाहेति ततोऽल्पाल्पः शकृद्रसः । स स्याद्विकृतगन्धोऽपि पिच्छिलः पीतलोहितः ॥ १,१६१.
If there is rawness or burning in the rectum, the fecal matter becomes scanty, foul-smelling, slimy, yellow, and bloody.
शेषश्चापूर्य जठरं घोरमारभते ततः । वर्धते तदधो नाभेराशु चैति जलात्मताम् ॥ १,१६१.
The remaining matter fills the abdomen, causing severe distress; it increases below the navel and quickly takes on a watery nature.
उद्रिक्ते दोषरूपे च व्याप्ते च श्वासतृट्भ्रमैः । छिद्रोदरमिदं प्राहुः परिस्त्रावीति चापरे ॥ १,१६१.
When the doṣas are greatly increased and pervade the body, along with breathlessness, thirst, and dizziness, this is called 'perforated abdomen'; others call it 'leakage.'
प्रवृत्तस्नेहपानादेः सहसापथ्यसेविनः । अत्यम्बुपानान्मन्दाग्नेः क्षीणस्यातिकृशस्य च ॥ १,१६१.
In those who suddenly indulge in unwholesome foods after consuming oily substances, who drink excessive water, have weak digestion, or are emaciated and very thin—
रुद्धः स्वमार्गादनिलः कफश्च जलमूर्छितः । वर्धते तु तदेवाम्बु तन्मात्राद्विन्दुराशितः ॥ १,१६१.
When the wind is obstructed from its own path, and phlegm is thickened by water, that very water increases, and from that essence, a drop is formed and accumulates.
तत्कोपादुदरं तृष्णागुदस्नुतिरुजान्वितम् । काशश्वासारुचियुतं नानावर्णाशिराततम् ॥ १,१६१.
From that disturbance arises abdominal swelling, accompanied by thirst, the flow of mucus, pain, cough, breathlessness, loss of appetite, and various colored veins spreading.
तोयपूर्णान्मृदुस्पर्शात्सदृशक्षोभवेपथु । बकोदरं स्थिरंस्निग्धं नाडीमावृत्य जायते ॥ १,१६१.
When the abdomen is filled with water, soft to the touch, trembling, and shivering similar to agitation, a stable and unctuous 'Bakodara' arises, blocking the channels.
उपेक्षायाञ्च सर्वेषां स्वस्थानां परिचालिताः । पाका द्रवा द्रवीकुर्युः सन्धिस्रोतोमुखान्यपि ॥ १,१६१.
And when all the healthy elements are neglected and disturbed, the digested and undigested fluids liquefy even the joints and openings of the channels.
स्वेदे चैव तु संरुद्धे मूर्छिताश्चान्तरस्थिताः । तदेवोदरमापूर्य कुर्यादुदरामयम् ॥ १,१६१.
When sweat is also obstructed and the internal fluids are thickened, that very fluid fills the abdomen and causes abdominal disease.
गुरूदरं स्थितं वृत्तमाहतञ्च न शब्दकृत् । हीनबलं तथा घोरं नाड्यां स्पृष्टञ्च सपति ॥ १,१६१.
The heavy abdomen is stable, rounded, injured, and does not produce sound; it is weak, severe, and when touched at the channel, it throbs.
शिरान्तर्धानमुदरे सर्वलक्षणमुच्यते । वातपित्तकफप्लीहसन्निपातोदकोदरम् ॥ १,१६१.
The disappearance of veins in the abdomen is said to be a sign of all types: wind, bile, phlegm, spleen, combined, and watery abdominal diseases.
पक्षाच्च जातसलिलं विष्टम्भोपद्रवान्वितम् । जन्मनैवोदरं सर्वं प्रायः कृच्छ्रतमं मतम् ॥ १,१६१.
When water is present from birth due to the influence of the parents, with symptoms of obstruction, all such congenital abdominal diseases are considered extremely difficult.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६२ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । पाण्डुशोथनिदानञ्च शृणु सुश्रत वच्मि ते । पित्तप्रधानाः कुपिता यथोक्तैः कोपनैर्मलाः ॥ १,१६२.
Dhanvantari said: Hear now the origin of pallor and swelling; I will tell you, O attentive one. When the humors dominated by bile are provoked by the causes previously described—
नत्रानिलेन बलिना क्षिप्ताक्षिप्तं यदि स्थितम् । धमनीर्दशमीः प्राप्य व्याप्नुवन्सकलां तनुम् ॥ १,१६२.
If not driven by the strong wind, and if it remains in place, reaching the ten vessels, it spreads throughout the entire body.
त्वगसृक्छ्लेष्ममांसानि प्रदूष्यन्रसमाश्रितम् । त्वङ्मांसयोस्तु कुरुते त्वचि वर्णान् पृथग्विधान् ॥ १,१६२.
Corrupting the skin, blood, phlegm, and flesh, and residing in the essence, it produces various colors in the skin and flesh.
स्वयं हरिद्रा हारिद्रं पाण्डुत्वं तेषु चाधिकम् । यातोऽयं प्रहतेदुग्रः स रोगस्तेन गौरवम् ॥ १,१६२.
Itself yellow like turmeric, and with excessive yellowness in those parts, when this severe disease strikes, it brings heaviness.
