आचोपमाध्मानमपक्तिशक्तिः आसन्नगुल्मस्य भवेच्च चिह्नम् ॥ १,१६०.
Distension resembling a sack, loss of digestive power—these are the signs of an impending tumor.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६१ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । उदराणां निदानञ्च वक्ष्ये सुश्रुत तच्छृणु । रोगाः सर्वेऽपि मन्दाग्नौ सुतरामुदराणि तु ॥ १,१६१.
Dhanvantari said: I will now explain the causes of abdominal diseases; listen to this, O Sushruta. All diseases arise especially when the digestive fire is weak, but abdominal diseases do so even more.
अनीर्णामयाश्चाप्यन्ये जायन्ते मलसंचयात् । ऊर्ध्वाधो वायवो रुद्ध्वा व्याकुलाविप्रवाहिणी? ॥ १,१६१.
Other diseases, not yet determined, also arise from the accumulation of impurities; when the upward and downward airs are obstructed, they become agitated and flow irregularly.
प्राणानपानान्संदूष्य कुर्युस्तान्मांससन्धिगान् । आध्माप्य कुक्षिमुदरमष्टधा ते च भेदतः ॥ १,१६१.
By corrupting the vital breaths—prāṇa and apāna—they affect the joints of the flesh; causing swelling of the belly and abdomen, these manifest in eight different ways.
पृथग्दोषैः समस्तौश्च प्लीहवङ्क्षक्षतोदकैः । तेनार्ताः शुष्कताल्वोष्ठाः सर्वपादकरोदराः ॥ १,१६१.
With distinct or combined humors, with fluids from the spleen, groin, or wounds, those afflicted become dry of palate and lips, with swelling of all limbs and abdomen.
नष्टचेष्टबलाहाराः कृतप्रध्मात्कुक्षयः । पुरुषाः स्युः प्रेतरूपा भाविनस्तस्य लक्षणम् ॥ १,१६१.
Deprived of movement, strength, and appetite, with bellies distended by wind, such people become ghost-like in form—these are the signs to be recognized.
क्षुन्नाशोऽरुचिवत्सर्वं सविदाहञ्च पच्यते । जीर्णान्नं यो न जानाति सोऽपथ्यं सेवतेनरः ॥ १,१६१.
Loss of hunger, aversion to all food, and burning pain arise; one who cannot discern digested from undigested food consumes what is unwholesome.
क्षीयते बलमङ्गस्य श्वसित्यल्पोऽविचेष्टितः । विषयावृत्तिबुद्धिश्च शोकशोषादयोऽपिच ॥ १,१६१.
The strength of the body diminishes, breathing becomes shallow, and there is little activity; the mind turns away from sense objects, and sorrow and wasting ensue.
रुग्बस्तिसन्धौ सततं लघ्वल्पभोजनैरपि । जराजीर्णो बलभ्रंशो भवेज्जठररोगिणः ॥ १,१६१.
There is constant pain in the bladder and joints, even with light and small meals; in abdominal disease, old age and indigestion bring about loss of strength.
स्वतन्त्रतन्द्रालसता मलसर्गोऽल्पवह्निता । दाहः श्वयथुराध्मानमन्त्रे सलिलसम्भवे ॥ १,१६१.
Lethargy, laziness, and independent drowsiness occur, with scanty excretion and weak digestive fire; there is burning, swelling, and bloating, especially when water is present.
सर्वत्र तोये मरणं शोचनं तत्र निष्फलम् । गवाक्षवच्छिराजालैरुदरं गुड्गुडायते ॥ १,१६१.
Death occurs in all watery places, and lamentation there is fruitless; the abdomen, like a window with a mesh of veins, makes gurgling sounds.
नाभिमन्त्रश्च विष्टभ्य वेगं कृत्वा प्रणश्यति । मारुते हृत्कटीनाभिपायुवङ्क्षणवेदनाः ॥ १,१६१.
The navel is obstructed and, creating pressure, is destroyed; with wind, there is pain in the heart, waist, navel, anus, and groin.
सशब्दो निः सरेद्वायुर्वहते मूत्रमल्पकम् । नातिमात्रं भवेल्लौल्यं नरस्य विरसं मुखम् ॥ १,१६१.
The wind passes out with sound, and carries little urine; there is no excessive craving, and the mouth of the person becomes tasteless.
तत्रवातोदरे शोथः पाणिपान्मुखकुक्षिषु । कुर्क्षिपार्श्वोदरकटीपृष्ठरुक्पर्वभदनम् ॥ १,१६१.
In abdominal disease caused by wind, there is swelling in the hands, feet, face, and belly; pain arises in the groin, sides, abdomen, waist, back, and joints.
शुष्ककासाङ्गमर्दाधोगुरुतामलसंग्रहः । श्यामारुणत्वगादित्वं मुखे च रसवद्धिता ॥ १,१६१.
There is dry cough, body ache, heaviness below, and accumulation of impurities; the skin becomes dark or reddish, and the mouth loses its sense of taste.
सतोदभेदमुदरं नीलकृष्णशिराततम् । आध्मातमुदरे शब्दमद्भुतं वा करोति सः ॥ १,१६१.
When the abdomen is split with pain, the veins appear blue-black and spread; when bloated, the belly produces strange sounds.
वायुश्चात्र सरुक्च्छब्दं विधत्ते सर्वथा गतिम् । पित्तोदरे ज्वरो मूर्छा दाहित्वं कटुकास्यता ॥ १,१६१.
Here, the wind causes pain and noise, moving in all directions; in abdominal disease from bile, there is fever, fainting, burning, and bitterness in the mouth.
भ्रमोतिसारः पीतत्वं त्वगादावुदरं हरित् । पीतताम्रशिरादित्वं सस्वेदं सोष्म दह्यते ॥ १,१६१.
There is dizziness, diarrhea, yellowness of the skin and other areas; the veins become yellow or coppery, with sweating and heat, and the person feels burning.
धूमायते मृदुस्पर्शं क्षैप्रपाकं प्रदूयते । श्लेष्मोदरेषु सदनं स्वेदश्वयथुगौरवम् ॥ १,१६१.
There is a smoky appearance, soft to the touch, and rapid decay; in diseases of the abdomen caused by phlegm, there is heaviness, sweating, and swelling.
निद्रा क्लेशोऽरुचिः श्वासः काशः शुक्लत्वगादिता । उदरं तिमिरं स्निग्धं शुक्लकृष्णशिरावृतम् ॥ १,१६१.
There is sleepiness, discomfort, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, cough, and paleness of the skin; the abdomen is cloudy, oily, and covered with white and black veins.
नीरातिवृद्धौ कठिनं शीतस्पर्शं गुरु स्थिरम् । त्रिदोषकोपने तैस्तैस्त्रिदोषजीनैतर्मलैः ॥ १,१६१.
With excessive increase, it becomes hard, cold to the touch, heavy, and firm; it provokes all three doṣas, and is tainted by impurities arising from those three doṣas.
सर्वदूषणदुष्टाश्च सरक्ताः सञ्चिता मलाः । कोष्ठं प्राप्य विकुर्वाणाः शोषमूर्छाभ्रमान्वितम् ॥ १,१६१.
All the impurities, corrupted by every kind of taint and mixed with blood, accumulate; reaching the abdomen, they undergo transformation, causing wasting, fainting, and dizziness.
कुर्युस्त्रिलिङ्गमुदरं शीघ्रपाकं सुदारुणम् । वर्धते तच्च सुतरां शीतवातप्रदर्शने ॥ १,१६१.
They produce the threefold type of abdominal disease, which matures quickly and is extremely severe; it increases especially upon exposure to cold and wind.
अत्यशनाच्च संक्षोभाद्यानपानादिचेष्ठितैः । अविहितैश्च पानाद्यैर्वमनव्याधिकर्षणैः ॥ १,१६१.
Due to overeating, agitation, improper food and drink, unsuitable beverages, and the strain of vomiting or other illnesses—
वामपार्श्वास्थितः प्लीहा त्युतस्थानो विवर्धते । शोणिताद्वा रसादिभ्यो विवृद्धो जनयेद्व्यथाम् ॥ १,१६१.
The spleen, situated on the left side, becomes enlarged from its place; when increased by blood or other bodily fluids, it causes pain.
सोऽष्ठीला चातिकठिनः प्रोन्नतः कूर्मपृष्ठवत्? । क्रमेण वर्धमानश्च कुक्षौ व्याततिमाहरेत् ॥ १,१६१.
It becomes hard as a stone, excessively firm, raised up like the back of a tortoise; gradually enlarging, it spreads across the abdomen.
श्वासकासपिपासास्यवैरस्याध्मानकज्वरैः । पाण्डुत्वमूर्छाछर्दित्वग्दाहमोहैश्च संयुतः ॥ १,१६१.
Accompanied by shortness of breath, cough, thirst, bad taste in the mouth, bloating, fever, pallor, fainting, vomiting, burning sensation, and confusion.
अरुणाभं विचित्राभं नीलहारिद्रराजितम् । उदावर्तेन चानाहमोहतृड्द्गहनज्वरैः ॥ १,१६१.
With a reddish or variegated appearance, tinged with blue and yellow; along with upward movement of wind, nausea, fainting, intense thirst, and persistent fever.
गौरवारुचिकाठिन्यैर्विघातभ्रमसंक्रमात् । प्लीहवद्दक्षिणात्पार्श्वात्कुर्याद्यकृदपि च्युतम् ॥ १,१६१.
Due to heaviness, loss of appetite, hardness, obstruction, and dizziness, the spleen may even shift from the left side to the right.
पक्वे भूते यकृति च सदा बद्धमलो गुदे । दुर्नामभिरुदावर्तैरन्यैर्वा पीडितो भवेत् ॥ १,१६१.
When the liver is affected and the feces are always retained in the rectum, one suffers from distressing symptoms with difficult names, or from other painful upward movements.
