गुलम इत्युच्यते बस्तिनाभिहृत्पार्श्वसंश्रयः । वातजन्ये शिरः शूलज्वर प्लीहान्त्रकूजनम् ॥ १,१६०.
This is called 'gulma,' situated in the bladder, navel, heart, or side; when caused by wind, there is headache, fever, spleen and intestine noises.
वेधः सूच्येव विड्भ्रंशः कृच्छ्रे मूत्रं प्रवर्तते । गात्रे मुखे पदे शोथः ह्यग्निमान्द्यं तथैव च ॥ १,१६०.
There is piercing pain like a needle, loss of feces, difficulty in passing urine; swelling of the limbs, face, and feet, and also loss of digestive fire.
रूक्षकृष्णत्वगादित्वं चलत्वादनिलस्यच । अनिरूपितसंस्थानो विविधाञ्जनयेद्व्यथाम् ॥ १,१६०.
Due to wind, the skin becomes dry and black, and there is restlessness; with indeterminate form, it produces various kinds of pain.
पिपीलिकाव्याप्त इव गुल्मः स्फुरति नुद्यते । पित्ताद्दाहाम्लकौ मूर्छा विड्भेदः स्वेदतृड्ज्वराः ॥ १,१६०.
The lump throbs and shifts as if covered by ants; from bile, there is burning, sourness, fainting, diarrhea, sweating, thirst, and fever.
हारिद्रयं सर्वगात्रेषु गुल्माच्छोथस्य दर्शनम् । हीयते दीप्यते श्लेष्मा स्वस्थानं दहतीवच ॥ १,१६०.
A yellowish discoloration appears on all parts of the body, with swelling and tumors; phlegm diminishes or flares up, burning its own seat, as it were.
कफात्स्तैमित्यमरुचिः सदनं शिरसि ज्वरः । पीनसालस्यहृल्लासौ शुक्लकृष्णत्वगादिता ॥ १,१६०.
Due to phlegm, there is heaviness, loss of taste, a sense of sinking, headache, fever, nasal congestion, lethargy, nausea, and changes in the skin such as pallor or darkness.
गुल्मो गभीरः कठिनो गुरुर्गर्भस्थबालवत् । स्वस्थानस्था अधावन्तस्तत एवात्र मारकाः ॥ १,१६०.
The tumor is deep, hard, and heavy, resembling a fetus or a child in the womb; those remaining in their own place move within, and these are considered fatal.
प्रायस्तु यत्तद्द्वन्द्वोत्था गुल्माः संसृष्टमैथुनाः । सर्वजस्तीव्ररुग्दाहः शीघ्रपाकी घनोन्नतः ॥ १,१६०.
Generally, those tumors arising from the combination of two doshas, or from mixed causes, are severe, cause intense pain and burning, mature quickly, and are dense and elevated.
सोऽसाध्यो रक्तगुल्मस्तु स्त्रिया एव प्रजायते । ऋतौ या चैव शूलार्ता यति वा योनिरोगिणी ॥ १,१६०.
That blood-tumor is incurable and arises only in women, especially in those who suffer pain during menstruation or have diseases of the womb.
सेवते वानिलांश्च स्त्री क्रुद्धस्तस्याः समीरणः । निरुध्यात्यार्तवं योन्यां प्रतिमासं व्यवस्थितम् ॥ १,१६०.
If a woman, angry, engages in intercourse during her period, the wind in her body obstructs the menstrual flow, which is regularly established in the womb each month.
सुक्षौ करोति तद्गर्भे लिङ्गमाविष्करोति च । हृल्लासदौहृदस्तन्यदर्शनं कामचारिता ॥ १,१६०.
This causes dryness in the womb, reveals the sexual organ, and brings about nausea, cravings, the appearance of milk, and behavior driven by desire.
क्रमेण वायोः संसर्गात्पित्तं योनिषु सञ्चयम् । रक्तस्य कुरुते तस्या वातपित्तोक्तगुल्मजान् ॥ १,१६०.
Gradually, by the mingling of wind, bile accumulates in the womb, producing in her the tumors described as caused by wind and bile.
गर्भाशये च सुतरां शूलांश्चैवासृगाश्रये । योनिस्त्रावश्च दौर्गन्ध्यं भूयः स्यन्दनवेदने ॥ १,१६०.
There is severe pain in the womb and especially in the blood-vessels, along with vaginal discharge, foul odor, and increased burning sensation.
कदापि गर्भवद्गुल्मः सर्वे ते रतिसम्भवाः । पाकञ्चिरेण भजते नैधते विद्रधिः पुनः ॥ १,१६०.
Sometimes the tumor resembles a pregnancy; all these arise from sexual intercourse, and as they mature, they may develop into abscesses.
पच्यते शीघ्रमत्यर्थं दुष्टरक्ताश्रयस्तु सः । अतः शीघ्रं विदाहित्वाद्वद्रधिः सोऽभीधीयते ॥ १,१६०.
It ripens very quickly, being rooted in impure blood; therefore, because it rapidly causes burning and destruction, it is called an abscess.
गुल्मान्तारश्रये बस्तिदाहश्च प्लीहवेदना । अग्निवर्णबलभ्रंशो वेगानां वा प्रवर्तनम् ॥ १,१६०.
When the tumor is located deep within, there is burning in the bladder, pain in the spleen, loss of digestive power and strength, or abnormal urges.
अतो विपर्यये बाह्यकोष्ठाङ्गेषु च नातिरुक् । वैवर्ण्यमथ वा कासो बहिरुन्नतताधिकम् ॥ १,१६०.
Conversely, when it is in the outer abdominal wall, there is not much pain, but there may be discoloration, cough, or greater outward swelling.
साटोपमत्युग्ररुजमाध्मानमुदरे भृशम् । ऊर्ध्वाधो वातरोधेन तमानाहं प्रचक्षते ॥ १,१६०.
With tension and very severe pain, there is marked distension of the abdomen; when wind is obstructed upward or downward, this is called tympanites.
धनश्चाष्ठ्युपमो ग्रन्थिलोऽष्ठीलातु समुन्नता । समस्तालिङ्गसंयुक्तः प्रत्यष्ठीला तदाकृतिः ॥ १,१६०.
It may resemble a sack of wealth, be nodular, or raised like a pestle; when all signs are present, it is called a pestle-shaped tumor.
पक्वशयोद्भवोऽप्येवं वायुस्तीव्ररुजाश्रयात् । उद्गारबाहुल्यपुरीषबन्धतृप्त्यक्षमत्वान्त्रविकूजनानि ॥ १,१६०.
When arising from the colon, due to severe pain from wind, there is frequent belching, constipation, early satiety, inability to digest, and gurgling of the intestines.
आचोपमाध्मानमपक्तिशक्तिः आसन्नगुल्मस्य भवेच्च चिह्नम् ॥ १,१६०.
Distension resembling a sack, loss of digestive power—these are the signs of an impending tumor.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १६१ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । उदराणां निदानञ्च वक्ष्ये सुश्रुत तच्छृणु । रोगाः सर्वेऽपि मन्दाग्नौ सुतरामुदराणि तु ॥ १,१६१.
Dhanvantari said: I will now explain the causes of abdominal diseases; listen to this, O Sushruta. All diseases arise especially when the digestive fire is weak, but abdominal diseases do so even more.
अनीर्णामयाश्चाप्यन्ये जायन्ते मलसंचयात् । ऊर्ध्वाधो वायवो रुद्ध्वा व्याकुलाविप्रवाहिणी? ॥ १,१६१.
Other diseases, not yet determined, also arise from the accumulation of impurities; when the upward and downward airs are obstructed, they become agitated and flow irregularly.
प्राणानपानान्संदूष्य कुर्युस्तान्मांससन्धिगान् । आध्माप्य कुक्षिमुदरमष्टधा ते च भेदतः ॥ १,१६१.
By corrupting the vital breaths—prāṇa and apāna—they affect the joints of the flesh; causing swelling of the belly and abdomen, these manifest in eight different ways.
पृथग्दोषैः समस्तौश्च प्लीहवङ्क्षक्षतोदकैः । तेनार्ताः शुष्कताल्वोष्ठाः सर्वपादकरोदराः ॥ १,१६१.
With distinct or combined humors, with fluids from the spleen, groin, or wounds, those afflicted become dry of palate and lips, with swelling of all limbs and abdomen.
नष्टचेष्टबलाहाराः कृतप्रध्मात्कुक्षयः । पुरुषाः स्युः प्रेतरूपा भाविनस्तस्य लक्षणम् ॥ १,१६१.
Deprived of movement, strength, and appetite, with bellies distended by wind, such people become ghost-like in form—these are the signs to be recognized.
क्षुन्नाशोऽरुचिवत्सर्वं सविदाहञ्च पच्यते । जीर्णान्नं यो न जानाति सोऽपथ्यं सेवतेनरः ॥ १,१६१.
Loss of hunger, aversion to all food, and burning pain arise; one who cannot discern digested from undigested food consumes what is unwholesome.
क्षीयते बलमङ्गस्य श्वसित्यल्पोऽविचेष्टितः । विषयावृत्तिबुद्धिश्च शोकशोषादयोऽपिच ॥ १,१६१.

रुग्बस्तिसन्धौ सततं लघ्वल्पभोजनैरपि । जराजीर्णो बलभ्रंशो भवेज्जठररोगिणः ॥ १,१६१.
There is constant pain in the bladder and joints, even with light and small meals; in abdominal disease, old age and indigestion bring about loss of strength.
स्वतन्त्रतन्द्रालसता मलसर्गोऽल्पवह्निता । दाहः श्वयथुराध्मानमन्त्रे सलिलसम्भवे ॥ १,१६१.
Lethargy, laziness, and independent drowsiness occur, with scanty excretion and weak digestive fire; there is burning, swelling, and bloating, especially when water is present.
