गन्धाज्ञानास्यवैरस्यश्रुतिनिद्राबलक्षयाः । शीताम्लफेनवृद्धिश्च पित्तान्मूर्छास्यतिक्तता ॥ १,१५४.
Loss of sense of smell, tastelessness in the mouth, loss of hearing, sleep, and strength; increase of cold, sour, and frothy saliva from bile, fainting, and bitterness in the mouth.
रक्तेक्षणत्वं सततं शोषो दाहोऽतिधूमकः । कफो रसाद्विकुपितस्तोयवाहिषु मारुतः ॥ १,१५४.
Constant redness of the eyes, dryness, burning, excessive smokiness; phlegm is disturbed by the tastes, and wind in the fluid-carrying channels.
स्रोतस्तु सकफं तेन पङ्कवच्छोष्यते ततः । शूकैरिवाचितः कण्ठो निद्रा मधुरवक्रता ॥ १,१५४.
When the stream is obstructed by phlegm, the calf dries up in the mud; the throat becomes blocked by husks, and sleep brings a sweet distortion.
आध्मानं शिरसो जाड्यं स्तैमित्यच्छर्द्यरोचकम् । आलस्यमविपाकञ्च यः स स्यात्सर्वलक्षणः ॥ १,१५४.
Swelling of the head, dullness, sluggishness, vomiting, loss of appetite, laziness, and poor digestion—one who has all these is said to possess every symptom.
आमोद्भवाच्च रक्तस्य संरोधाद्वातपित्तता । उष्णाक्रान्तस्य सहसा शीताम्भो भजतस्तृषा ॥ १,१५४.
From the arising of fragrance and the obstruction of blood, there results a condition of wind and bile; when one suddenly drinks cold water after heat, thirst arises.
उष्णादूर्ध्वं गतः कोष्ठं कुर्याद्वै पित्तजैवसा । या च पानातिपानोत्था तीक्ष्णाग्रे स्नेहपाकजा ॥ १,१५४.
When heat rises upward in the abdomen, it produces bile; and that which arises from excessive drinking, sharp, and cooked in oil, is also of the same nature.
स्निग्धकट्वम्ललवणभोजनेन कफोद्भवा । तृष्णारसक्षयोक्तेन लक्षणेन क्षयात्मिका ॥ १,१५४.
Thirst arising from eating oily, bitter, sour, and salty foods is caused by phlegm; with the symptoms described—loss of taste and thirst—it is of a wasting nature.
शोषमोहज्वराद्यन्यदीर्घरोगोपसर्गतः । या तृष्णा जायते तीव्रा सोपसर्गात्मिका स्मृता ॥ १,१५४.
Intense thirst arising from dryness, confusion, fever, and other complications of chronic disease is considered to be accompanied by such symptoms.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १५५ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । वक्ष्ये मदात्ययादेश्च निदानं मुनिभाषितम् । तीक्ष्णाम्लरूक्षसूक्ष्माम्लव्यवायासुकरं लघु ॥ १,१५५.
Dhanvantari said: I will explain the cause of intoxication as spoken by the sages: it is sharp, sour, rough, subtle, sour, active, and light.
विकाशि विशदं मद्यं मेदसोऽस्माद्विपर्ययः । तीक्ष्णोदयाश्च दिव्युक्ताश्चित्तोपप्लविनो गुणाः ॥ १,१५५.
Wine is expansive and clear, but contrary to fat; its sharp effects are described as divine, and its qualities disturb the mind.
जीवितान्ताः प्रजायन्ते विषेणोत्कर्षवर्तिना । तीक्ष्णादिभिर्गुणैर्मद्यं मान्द्यदीनोजसो गुणान् ॥ १,१५५.
The end of life occurs from the highest degree of poison; with sharp and similar qualities, wine diminishes the strength and qualities of the body.
दशभिर्गुणैः संक्षोम्यं चेतो नयति चाक्रियम् । आद्ये मदे द्वितीयेऽपि प्रम (मो) दायतने स्थितः ॥ १,१५५.
With ten qualities, it contracts and leads the mind to inactivity; in the first stage of intoxication and even in the second, confusion is established.
दुर्विकल्पहतो मूढः सुखमित्यभिमुच्यते । मध्यमोत्तमयोः सन्धिं प्राप्य राजासनो मदः ॥ १,१५५.
Struck by indecision, the bewildered person declares what is pleasant as happiness; when intoxication reaches the junction of moderate and highest, it assumes the king's seat.
निरङ्कुश इव व्यालो न किञ्चिन्नाचरेत्ततः । इयं भूमिरवाच्यानां दौः शीलस्येदमास्पदम् ॥ १,१५५.
Like a wild beast without a goad, he does nothing thereafter; this earth becomes the abode of those with unspeakable conduct and poor character.
एकोऽयं बहुमार्गायाः दुर्गर्(म) तेर्दर्शकः परम् । निश्चेष्टः सन्नवाक्शेते तृतीयेऽत्र मदे स्थितः ॥ १,१५५.
This is the chief indicator of the difficult path with many ways; when motion ceases and speech is lost, intoxication is in its third stage.
मरणादपि पापात्मा गतः पापतरां दशाम् । धर्माधर्मं सुखं दुः खं मानानर्थं हिताहितम् ॥ १,१५५.
Even worse than death, the sinful soul falls into a more sinful state; he does not know righteousness or unrighteousness, happiness or sorrow, honor or dishonor, benefit or harm.
न वेद शीकमोहार्तं शोष (क) मोहादिसंयुतः । सोन्मादभ्रममूर्छायां सापस्मारः पतत्यधः ॥ १,१५५.
He does not know, afflicted by delusion and confusion, joined with dryness, confusion, and other symptoms; in madness, delirium, fainting, and epilepsy, he falls down.
नाति माद्यन्ति बलिनः कृताहारा महाशनाः । वातात्पित्तात्कफात्सर्वैर्भवेद्रोगो मदात्ययः ॥ १,१५५.
The strong, those who have eaten, and the gluttonous do not become excessively intoxicated; intoxication disease arises from wind, bile, and phlegm—all together.
सामान्यलक्षणं तेषां प्रमोहो हृदयव्यथा । विभेदं प्रसभं तृष्णा सौम्यो ग्लानिर्ज्वरोऽरुचिः ॥ १,१५५.
Their common symptoms are confusion, pain in the heart, splitting headache, intense thirst, mild fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite.
पुरोविबन्धस्तिमिरं कासः श्वासः प्रजागरः । स्वेदोऽतिमात्रं विष्टम्भः श्वयथुश्चित्तविभ्रमः ॥ १,१५५.
Obstruction in the chest, darkness, cough, breathlessness, sleeplessness, excessive sweating, bloating, swelling, and disturbance of the mind.
स्वप्नेनेवाभिभवति न चोक्तश्च स भाषतेः । पित्ताद्दाहज्वरः स्वेदो मोहो नित्यं च विभ्रमः ॥ १,१५५.
He is overcome as if in a dream, and does not speak even when addressed; from bile arise burning, fever, sweating, confusion, and constant dizziness.
श्लेष्मणश्छर्दिर्हृल्लासो निद्रा चोदरगौरवम् । सर्वजे सर्वलिङ्गत्वं ज्ञात्वा मद्यं पिबेत्तु यः ॥ १,१५५.
From phlegm come vomiting, nausea, drowsiness, and heaviness in the abdomen; whoever drinks liquor knowing it has all these signs and symptoms in every case—
सहसा रुचिरं चान्यतरध्वंसकशोषिणौ । भवेतां?मारुतात्कष्टाद्भवेत्त स्य विशेषतः ॥ १,१५५.
Suddenly, there may be pleasantness, or else destruction and dryness; from wind, especially, severe suffering arises.
ध्वंसकश्लेष्मनिष्ठिवाः कण्ठशोषोऽतिनिद्रता । शब्दासहत्वं तच्चित्तविक्षेपोऽङ्गे हि वातरुक् ॥ १,१५५.
With destruction, there is spitting of phlegm, dryness of the throat, excessive sleepiness, intolerance to sound, and distraction of the mind—these are the pains caused by wind in the body.
हृत्कण्ठरोगः संमोहः श्वासतृष्णावमिज्वराः । निवर्तेद्यस्तु मद्येभ्यो जितात्मा बुद्धिपूर्वकृत् ॥ १,१५५.
Heart and throat diseases, confusion, breathlessness, thirst, and intermittent fever—he who abstains from liquor, self-controlled and acting with discernment, is freed from these.
विकारैः क्लिश्यते जातु न स शरीरमानसः । रजोमोहहिताहारपास्य स्युस्त्रयो गदाः ॥ १,१५५.
He is never afflicted in body or mind by disorders; but for one whose food is impure through passion and delusion, three diseases arise.
वसासृक्क्लेदनावाहिस्रोतोरोधः सुद्भवाः । मदमूर्छापसंन्यासा यथोत्तरबलोद्भवाः ॥ १,१५५.
Obstruction of channels carrying fat, blood, and moisture, and the arising of intoxication, fainting, and loss of consciousness—these occur in order of increasing strength.
मदोऽत्र दोषैः सर्वैस्तु रक्तमद्यविषैरपि । शक्त्यानन्त्याद्गताभासश्चलश्छलितवेष्टितः ॥ १,१५५.
Here, intoxication arises from all the humors, as well as from blood, wine, and poisons; due to the boundless power, its manifestation is unstable and deceptive.
रूक्षश्यामारुणतनुर्मद्ये वातोद्भवे भवेत् । पित्तेन क्रोधनो रक्तपीताभः कलहप्रियः ॥ १,१५५.
When intoxication is caused by wind, the body becomes dry, dark, and reddish; from bile, one becomes irritable, reddish-yellow in hue, and fond of quarrels.
स्वप्नेऽसम्बद्धवाक्यादिः कफाद्ध्यानपरो हि सः । सर्वोत्थसन्निपातेन रक्तस्तम्भाङ्गदूषणम् ॥ १,१५५.
In intoxication from phlegm, one utters incoherent words in dreams and is absorbed in meditation; when all humors are involved, there is stiffness of blood and corruption of the limbs.
