सर्वं वीतरसं शोकक्रोधादिषु यथा मनः । छर्दिदोषैः पृथक्सर्वैर्दुष्टैरन्यैश्च पञ्चमः ॥ १,१५३.
Just as the mind becomes devoid of all taste in grief, anger, and so on, so too, by the various humors and other corruptions, a fifth type arises.
उदानोऽधिकृतान्दोषान्सर्वं सन्ध्यर्हमस्यति । आशु क्लेशोऽस्य लावण्यप्रसेकारुचयः क्रमात् ॥ १,१५३.
When the upward-moving air is afflicted by all the humors, it expels everything that is fit for digestion; quickly, there is distress, loss of luster, excessive salivation, and loss of appetite in succession.
नाभिपृष्ठं रुजत्याशु पार्श्वे चाहारमुत्क्षिपेत् । ततो विच्छ्रिन्नल्पाल्पकषायं फेनिलं वमेत् ॥ १,१५३.
It quickly causes pain in the navel and back, and expels food to the side; then, with interruptions, little by little, it vomits astringent, frothy matter.
शब्दोद्गरयुतः कृच्छ्रमनुकृच्छ्रेण वेगवत् । कासास्यशोषकं वातात्स्वरपीडासमन्वितम् ॥ १,१५३.
With noisy belching, it is difficult and forceful; due to wind, there is cough, dryness of the mouth, and affliction of the voice.
पित्तात्क्षारोदकनिभं धूम्रं हरितपीतकम् । सासृगम्लं कटुतिक्तं तृण्मूर्छादाहपाकवत् ॥ १,१५३.
From bile, it is like saline water, smoky, greenish-yellow; mixed with blood, sour, sharp, bitter, with a smell of grass, causing burning and ripening.
कफात्स्निग्धं घनं पीतं श्लेष्मतस्तु समाक्षिकम् । मधुरं लवणं भूरि प्रसक्तं लोमहर्षणम् ॥ १,१५३.
From phlegm, it is unctuous, thick, yellow, and from mucus, similar to honey; sweet, salty, abundant, excessive, and causing horripilation.
मखश्वयथुमाधुर्यतन्द्राहृल्लासकासवान् । सर्वैर्लिङ्गैः समापन्नस्त्याज्यो भवति सर्वथा ॥ १,१५३.
When accompanied by swelling, sweetness, drowsiness, nausea, exhilaration, and cough, and when all these signs are present together, it must certainly be discarded.
सर्वं यस्य च विद्विष्टं दर्शनश्रवणादिभिः । वातादिनैव संक्रुद्धकृमिदुष्टान्नजे गदे । शूलवेपतुहृल्लासो विशेषात्कृमिजे भवेत् ॥ १,१५३.
When everything about a person is repulsive—by sight, hearing, and so on—due to wind and other humors, or from food corrupted by worms, the disease manifests with pain, trembling, exhilaration, and especially in worm-induced cases.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १५४ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । हृद्रोगादिनिदानं ते वक्ष्येऽहं सुश्रुताधुना । कृमिहृद्रोगलिङ्गैश्च स्मृताः पञ्च तु हृद्गताः ॥ १,१५४.
Dhanvantari said: Now, O learned one, I will explain to you the causes of heart disease and related conditions, including those caused by worms; five types located in the heart are recognized by their signs.
वातेन शून्यातात्यर्थं भुज्यते रोरुदीति च । भिद्यते शुष्यते स्तब्धं हृदयं शून्यता भ्रमः ॥ १,१५४.
Due to wind, there is excessive emptiness, the person eats and cries out; the heart feels broken, dried, stiff, empty, and there is dizziness.
अकस्माद्दीनता शोको भयं शब्देऽसैष्णुता । वेपथुर्वेपनान्मोहः श्वासरोधोऽल्पनिद्रता ॥ १,१५४.
Sudden dejection, sorrow, fear, intolerance of sound, trembling, shivering, confusion, difficulty breathing, and little sleep arise.
पित्तात्तृष्णा श्रमो दाहो स्वेदोऽम्लकफजः क्रमः । छर्दनं ह्यम्लपित्तस्य धूमकल्पितको ज्वरः ॥ १,१५४.
From bile, there is thirst, fatigue, burning, sweating, and a sequence of sour and phlegmatic symptoms; vomiting occurs in sour-bile conditions, and fever arises with a smoky sensation.
श्लेष्मणा हृदयं स्तब्धं भारिकं साश्मगर्भवत् । कासास्थिसादनिष्ठीवनिद्रालस्यारुचिज्वराः ॥ १,१५४.
From phlegm, the heart becomes stiff, heavy, as if containing a stone; cough, weakness of bones, spitting, drowsiness, laziness, loss of appetite, and fever occur.
हृद्रोगे हि त्रिभिर्देषैः कृमिभिः श्यावनेत्रता । तमः प्रवेशो हृल्लासः शोथः कण्डूः कफस्त्रुतिः ॥ १,१५४.
In heart disease caused by all three humors and by worms, there is darkening of the eyes, entry into darkness, exhilaration, swelling, itching, and discharge of phlegm.
हृदयं सततं चात्र क्रकचेनेव दीर्यते । चिकित्सदामयं (रं) घोरं तच्छीघ्रं शीघ्रमारिणम् ॥ १,१५४.
Here, the heart is constantly torn as if by a saw; this terrible disease should be treated quickly, very quickly.
वातात्पित्तात्कफात्तृष्णा सन्निपाताद्बलक्षयः । षष्ठी स्यादुपसर्गाच्च वातपित्ते च कारणम् ॥ १,१५४.
From wind, bile, and phlegm comes thirst; from the combination of all three, loss of strength; the sixth type arises from complications, and wind-bile is the cause.
सर्वेषु तत्प्रकोपो हि सम्यग्धातुप्रशोषणात् । सर्वदेहभ्रामोत्कम्पतापहृद्दाहमोहकृत् ॥ १,१५४.
When all these are aggravated, they thoroughly dry up the body’s tissues, causing confusion throughout the body, trembling, heat, burning in the heart, and loss of consciousness.
जिह्वामूलगलक्लोमतालुतोयवहाः शिराः । संशोष्य तृष्णा जायन्ते तासां सामान्यलक्षणम् ॥ १,१५४.
When the veins carrying fluids to the root of the tongue, throat, palate, and uvula are dried up, thirst arises; this is their common sign.
मुखशोषो जलातृप्तिरन्नद्वेषः स्वरक्षयः । कण्ठोष्ठतालुकार्कश्याज्जिह्वानिष्क्रमणे क्लमः ॥ १,१५४.
Dryness of the mouth, satisfaction from water, aversion to food, loss of voice, burning in the throat, lips, and palate, and fatigue when sticking out the tongue.
प्रलापश्चित्तविभ्रंशो ह्युद्गराढ्यस्तथामयः । मारुतात्क्षामतादैन्यं शङ्खभे (तो) दः शिरौभ्रमः ॥ १,१५४.
Delirium, confusion of mind, and disease accompanied by frequent belching; from wind, there is emaciation, dejection, pain in the temples, and dizziness in the head.
गन्धाज्ञानास्यवैरस्यश्रुतिनिद्राबलक्षयाः । शीताम्लफेनवृद्धिश्च पित्तान्मूर्छास्यतिक्तता ॥ १,१५४.
Loss of sense of smell, tastelessness in the mouth, loss of hearing, sleep, and strength; increase of cold, sour, and frothy saliva from bile, fainting, and bitterness in the mouth.
रक्तेक्षणत्वं सततं शोषो दाहोऽतिधूमकः । कफो रसाद्विकुपितस्तोयवाहिषु मारुतः ॥ १,१५४.
Constant redness of the eyes, dryness, burning, excessive smokiness; phlegm is disturbed by the tastes, and wind in the fluid-carrying channels.
स्रोतस्तु सकफं तेन पङ्कवच्छोष्यते ततः । शूकैरिवाचितः कण्ठो निद्रा मधुरवक्रता ॥ १,१५४.
When the stream is obstructed by phlegm, the calf dries up in the mud; the throat becomes blocked by husks, and sleep brings a sweet distortion.
आध्मानं शिरसो जाड्यं स्तैमित्यच्छर्द्यरोचकम् । आलस्यमविपाकञ्च यः स स्यात्सर्वलक्षणः ॥ १,१५४.
Swelling of the head, dullness, sluggishness, vomiting, loss of appetite, laziness, and poor digestion—one who has all these is said to possess every symptom.
आमोद्भवाच्च रक्तस्य संरोधाद्वातपित्तता । उष्णाक्रान्तस्य सहसा शीताम्भो भजतस्तृषा ॥ १,१५४.
From the arising of fragrance and the obstruction of blood, there results a condition of wind and bile; when one suddenly drinks cold water after heat, thirst arises.
उष्णादूर्ध्वं गतः कोष्ठं कुर्याद्वै पित्तजैवसा । या च पानातिपानोत्था तीक्ष्णाग्रे स्नेहपाकजा ॥ १,१५४.
When heat rises upward in the abdomen, it produces bile; and that which arises from excessive drinking, sharp, and cooked in oil, is also of the same nature.
स्निग्धकट्वम्ललवणभोजनेन कफोद्भवा । तृष्णारसक्षयोक्तेन लक्षणेन क्षयात्मिका ॥ १,१५४.
Thirst arising from eating oily, bitter, sour, and salty foods is caused by phlegm; with the symptoms described—loss of taste and thirst—it is of a wasting nature.
शोषमोहज्वराद्यन्यदीर्घरोगोपसर्गतः । या तृष्णा जायते तीव्रा सोपसर्गात्मिका स्मृता ॥ १,१५४.
Intense thirst arising from dryness, confusion, fever, and other complications of chronic disease is considered to be accompanied by such symptoms.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १५५ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । वक्ष्ये मदात्ययादेश्च निदानं मुनिभाषितम् । तीक्ष्णाम्लरूक्षसूक्ष्माम्लव्यवायासुकरं लघु ॥ १,१५५.
Dhanvantari said: I will explain the cause of intoxication as spoken by the sages: it is sharp, sour, rough, subtle, sour, active, and light.
विकाशि विशदं मद्यं मेदसोऽस्माद्विपर्ययः । तीक्ष्णोदयाश्च दिव्युक्ताश्चित्तोपप्लविनो गुणाः ॥ १,१५५.
Wine is expansive and clear, but contrary to fat; its sharp effects are described as divine, and its qualities disturb the mind.
