चिरेण यमलैर्वेगैर्या हिक्रा संप्रवर्तते । परिणामान्मुखे वृद्धिं परिणामे च गच्छति ॥ १,१५१.
The hiccup that arises after a long time, with paired impulses, increases in the mouth as it progresses and grows with each episode.
कम्पयन्ती शिरो ग्रीवां यमलां तां विनिर्दिशेत् । प्रलापच्छर्द्यतीसारनेत्रविप्लुतजृम्भिता ॥ १,१५१.
The one that causes trembling of the head and neck should be identified as the 'paired' type, accompanied by delirium, vomiting, diarrhea, and rolling of the eyes.
यमला वेगिनी हिक्रा परिणामवती च सा । ध्वस्तभ्रूशङ्खयुग्मस्य श्रुतिविप्लुतचक्षुषः ॥ १,१५१.
The paired, forceful hiccup, which comes with progression, causes the brows and temples to droop, and disturbs hearing and sight.
स्तम्भयन्ती तनुं वाचं स्मृतिं संज्ञां च मुञ्चती । तुदन्ती मार्गमाणस्य कुर्वती मर्मघट्टनम् ॥ १,१५१.
It stiffens the body and speech, takes away memory and consciousness, strikes the vital channels, and causes pain along their course.
पृष्ठतो नमनं सार्ष्यं महाहिक्रा प्रवर्तते । महाशूला महाशब्दा महावेगा महाबला ॥ १,१५१.
When there is bending backward and trembling, the great hiccup arises; it brings severe pain, loud sound, great force, and immense strength.
पक्राशयाच्च नाभेर्वा पूर्ववत्सा प्रवर्तते ॥ १,१५१.
It also arises from the stomach or navel, just as previously described.
तद्रूपा सा महत्कुर्याञ्जृम्भणां गप्रसारणम् । गम्भीरेण निदानेन गम्भीरा तु सुसाधयेत् ॥ १,१५१.
That type produces great yawning and stretching of the jaw; with a deep cause, the deep hiccup is difficult to cure.
आद्ये द्वे वर्जयेदन्ये सर्वलिङ्गां च वेगिनीम् । सर्वस्य संचितामस्य स्थविरस्य व्यवायिनः ॥ १,१५१.
In the first two types, one should avoid the others; the forceful type shows all symptoms, especially in those who are old or sexually active.
व्याधिभिः क्षीणदेहस्य भक्तच्छेदकृशस्य च । सर्वेऽपि रोगा नाशाय न त्वेवं शाघ्रकारिणः ॥ १,१५१.
For one whose body is weakened by disease and emaciated from lack of food, all other ailments may be cured, but not so for one who acts rashly.
हिक्राश्वासौ यथा तौ हि मृत्युकाले कृतालयौ ॥ १,१५१.
Just as hiccup and breathlessness, when established at the time of death, remain fixed.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १५२ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । अथातो यक्ष्मरोगस्य निदानं प्रवदाम्यहम् । अनेकरोगानुगतो बहुरोगपुरोगमः ॥ १,१५२.
Dhanvantari said: Now, therefore, I shall explain the origin of the disease yakṣma, which is accompanied by many other ailments and is preceded by numerous disorders.
राजयक्ष्मा क्षयः शोषो रोगराडिति कथ्यते । नक्षत्राणां द्विजानाञ्च राज्ञोऽभूद्यदयं पुरा ॥ १,१५२.
It is called rājayakṣmā, kṣaya, śoṣa, and the lord of diseases; in ancient times, this affliction befell the king among stars and twice-born ones.
यच्च राजा च यक्ष्मा च राजयक्ष्मा ततो मतः । देहौषधक्षयकृतेः क्षयस्तत्सम्भवाच्च सः ॥ १,१५२.
Because both 'king' and 'yakṣma' are present, it is known as rājayakṣmā; it is called kṣaya due to the wasting of the body and vital substances, and arises from that cause.
रसादिशोषणाच्छोषो रोगराडिति राजवत् । साहसं वेगसंरोधः शुक्रौजः स्नेहसंक्षयः ॥ १,१५२.
It is called śoṣa because of the drying up of fluids and so forth; it is the lord of diseases, like a king; it arises from rash actions, suppression of natural urges, and the depletion of semen, strength, and unctuousness.
अन्नपानविधित्यागश्चत्वारस्तस्यहेतवः । तैरुदीर्णोऽनिलः पित्तं व्यर्थं चोदीर्य सर्वतः ॥ १,१५२.
Abandonment of proper rules regarding food and drink—these four are its causes; by them, wind is provoked, and pitta is disturbed everywhere in vain.
शरिरसन्धिमाविश्य ताः शिराः प्रतिपीडयन् । मुखानि स्रोतसां रुद्ध्वा तथैवातिविसृज्य वा ॥ १,१५२.
Entering the joints of the body, they press upon the veins, block the channels, or cause excessive discharge.
मध्यमूर्ध्वमधस्तिर्यगव्यथां सञ्जनयेद्धृदः । रूपं भविष्यतस्तस्य प्रतिश्यायो भृशं ज्वरः ॥ १,१५२.
They produce pain in the middle, upper, lower, and transverse parts of the body, and in the heart; the symptoms that arise are severe nasal catarrh and fever.
प्रसेको मुखमाधुर्यं मार्दवं वह्निदे हयोः । लौल्यभावोऽन्नपानादौ शुचावशुचिवीक्षणम् ॥ १,१५२.
There is excessive salivation, sweetness in the mouth, softness, impairment of digestive fire, craving for food and drink, and seeing pure and impure things alike.
मक्षिकातृणकेशादिपातः प्रायोऽन्नपानयोः । हृल्लासश्छर्दिररुचिरस्नातेऽपि बलक्षयः ॥ १,१५२.
Food and drink are often contaminated by flies, grass, hair, and the like; there is nausea, vomiting, loss of taste, and weakness even after bathing.
पाण्योरुवक्षः पादास्यकुक्ष्यक्ष्णोरतिशुक्लता । बाह्वोः प्रतोदो जिह्वायाः काये बैभत्स्यदर्शनम् ॥ १,१५२.
The hands, thighs, chest, feet, mouth, abdomen, and eyes become excessively pale; there is whip-like pain in the arms, burning of the tongue, and a repulsive appearance of the body.
स्त्रीमद्यमांसप्रियता घृणिता मूर्धगुण्ठनम् । नखकेशास्थिवृद्धिश्च स्वप्ने चाभिभवो भवेत् ॥ १,१५२.
There is fondness for women, wine, and meat, aversion, covering of the head, growth of nails, hair, and bones, and oppression in dreams.
पतनं कृकलासाहिकपिश्वापदपक्षिभिः । केशास्थितुषभस्मादितरौ समधिरोहणम् ॥ १,१५२.
There are dreams of falling, of jackals, snakes, demons, wild animals, and birds; and of ascending heaps of hair, bones, husks, and ashes.
शून्यानां ग्रामदेशानां दर्शनं शुष्यतोऽम्भसः । ज्योतिर्दिवि दवाग्नीनां ज्वलतां च महीरुहाम् ॥ १,१५२.
There are visions of deserted villages and regions, of drying up water, of light in the sky, of wildfires, and of burning trees.
पीनसश्वासकासं च स्वरमूर्धरुजोऽरुचिः । ऊर्ध्वनिः श्वाससंशोषावधश्छर्दिश्च कोष्ठगे ॥ १,१५२.
There is nasal congestion, breathlessness, cough, hoarseness, pain in the head, loss of appetite, drying up of upward breath, and vomiting from the stomach.
स्थिते पार्श्वे च रुग्बोधे सन्धिस्थे भवति ज्वरः । रूपाण्यैकादशैतानि जायन्ते राजयक्ष्मणः ॥ १,१५२.
When pain is felt in the side, fever arises in the joints; these eleven symptoms manifest in rājayakṣma.
तेषामुपद्रवान्विद्यात्कण्ठध्वंसकरी रुजाः । जृम्भाङ्गमर्दनिष्ठीववह्निमान्द्यास्यपूतिता ॥ १,१५२.
Among their complications are to be known: pain that destroys the throat, yawning, body aches, spitting, weakness of digestive fire, and foulness of the mouth.
तत्र वाताच्छिरः पार्श्वशूलनं सांगमर्दनम् । कण्ठरोधः स्वरभ्रंशः पित्तात्पादांसपाणिषु ॥ १,१५२.
There, due to wind (vāta), there is head and side pain, body aches, obstruction of the throat, and loss of voice; due to bile (pitta), pain occurs in the feet, shoulders, and hands.
दाहोऽतिसारोऽसृक्छर्दिर्मुखगन्धो ज्वरो मदः । कफादरोचकच्छर्दिकासा अर्ध्वां गगौरवम् ॥ १,१५२.
There is burning, diarrhea, vomiting of blood, foul breath, fever, and delirium; due to phlegm (kapha), there is loss of appetite, vomiting, cough, heaviness in the chest, and a sense of weight above.
प्रसेकः पीनसः श्वासः स्वरभेदोऽल्पवह्निता । दोषैर्मन्दानलत्वेन शोथलेपकफोल्बणैः ॥ १,१५२.
There is excessive salivation, nasal discharge, shortness of breath, hoarseness, and weak digestive fire; because of the humors, the digestive fire is diminished, and there is swelling, coating, and excess phlegm.
स्रोतोमुखेषु रुद्धेषु धातुषु स्वल्पकेषु च । विदाहो मनसः स्थाने भवन्त्यन्ये ह्युपद्रवाः ॥ १,१५२.
When the channels are blocked and the tissues are depleted, burning arises in the mind; other complications also occur in such a state.
