प्रवर्तते सवक्रेण भिन्नकांस्योपमध्वनिः । हृत्पार्श्वेरुशिरः शूलमोहक्षोभस्वरक्षयान् ॥ १,१४९.
It manifests with a crooked sound, resembling broken bronze; it brings pain in the heart, side, head, confusion, agitation, and loss of voice.
करोति शुष्ककासञ्च महावेगरुजास्वनम् । सोंगहर्षो कफं शुष्कं कृछ्रान्मुक्त्वाल्पतां व्रजेत् ॥ १,१४९.
It produces a dry cough, severe pain, and a harsh sound; with horripilation, it expels dry phlegm with difficulty, and then diminishes.
पित्तात्पीताक्षिकत्वं च तिक्तास्यत्वं ज्वरो भ्रमः । पित्तासृग्वमनं तृष्णा वैस्वर्यं धूमको मदः ॥ १,१४९.
From bile arise yellowing of the eyes, bitterness in the mouth, fever, dizziness, vomiting of bile and blood, thirst, hoarseness, a smoky feeling, and intoxication.
प्रततं कासवेगे च ज्योतिषामिव दर्शनम् । कफादुरोऽल्परुङ्मूर्धि हृदयं स्तिमिते गुरु ॥ १,१४९.
With persistent cough, vision appears as if seeing lights; from phlegm, there is little pain in the head, the heart feels heavy and dull.
कण्ठे प्रलेपमदजं पीनसच्छर्द्यरोचकाः । रोमहर्षो धनस्निग्धंश्लेष्मणाञ्च प्रवर्तनम् ॥ १,१४९.
There is coating in the throat, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, vomiting, and lack of taste; horripilation, thick and oily phlegm, and its increased production.
युद्धाद्यैः साहसैस्तैस्तैः सेवितैरयथाबलम् । उपस्यन्तः क्षतो वायुः पित्तेनानुगतो बली ॥ १,१४९.
By engaging in various strenuous acts like battle, beyond one's strength, wind is afflicted, joined by bile, and becomes powerful.
कुपितः कुरुते कासं कफं तेन सशोणितम् । पीतं श्यावञ्च शुष्कञ्च ग्रथितं कुपितं बहु ॥ १,१४९.
When disturbed, it causes cough with phlegm mixed with blood, yellow, dark, dry, clotted, abundant, and aggravated.
ष्ठीवेत्कण्ठेन रुजता विभिन्नेनैव चोरसा । सूचीभिरिव तीक्ष्णाभिस्तुद्यमानेन शूलिना ॥ १,१४९.
He spits painfully from the throat, with the chest feeling split, as if pierced by sharp needles or struck by a spear.
दुः खस्पर्शेन शूलेन भेदपीडाहितापिना । पर्वभेदज्वरश्वासतृष्णावैस्वर्यकम्पवान् ॥ १,१४९.
With painful touch, piercing pain, splitting and oppressive suffering, there is breaking of the joints, fever, shortness of breath, thirst, hoarseness, and trembling.
पारावत इवोत्कूजन्पार्श्वशूली ततोऽस्य च । कफाद्यैर्वमनं पक्तिबलवर्णञ्च हीयते ॥ १,१४९.
He coos like a pigeon, has pain in the side, and due to phlegm and other causes, vomiting occurs, and strength, complexion, and digestion are diminished.
क्षीणस्य सासृङ्मूत्रत्वं श्वासपृष्टकटिग्रहः । षायुप्रधानाः कुपिता धावतो राजयक्ष्मणः ॥ १,१४९.
In the emaciated, there is blood in the urine, difficulty breathing, stiffness of the back and loins; when aggravated, these are the main symptoms of consumption.
कर्वन्ति यक्ष्मायतने कासं ष्ठीवत्कफं ततः । पूतिपूयोपमं वीतं मिश्रं हरितलोहितम् ॥ १,१४९.
In the seat of consumption, they produce cough and then phlegm with spitting; it is expelled, resembling putrid pus, mixed with yellow and red.
सुप्यते तुद्यत इव हृदयं पचतीव च । अकस्मादुष्णशीतेच्छा बह्वाशित्वं बलक्षयः ॥ १,१४९.
One sleeps as if being struck, the heart feels as if it is burning; suddenly there is a desire for heat or cold, excessive eating, and loss of strength.
स्निग्धप्रसन्नवक्रत्वं श्रीमद्दर्शननेत्रता । ततोऽस्य क्षयरूपाणि सर्वाण्याविर्भवन्ति च ॥ १,१४९.
The face becomes oily, clear, and curved, the eyes appear radiant and lustrous; then all the signs of wasting disease manifest in him.
इत्येष क्षयजः कास क्षीणानां देहनाशनः । याप्यौ वा बलिनां तद्वत्क्षतजोऽपि नवौ तु तौ ॥ १,१४९.
Thus, this cough arising from wasting destroys the bodies of the weakened; in the strong, the two forms—wasting and injury—are similarly present, but in them they are new.
सिध्येतामपि सामर्थ्यात्साध्यादौ च पृथक्क्रमः । मिश्रा याप्याश्च ये सर्वे जरसः स्थविरस्य च ॥ १,१४९.
Both may be cured by capability, but at the beginning of curable diseases, their progression is distinct; all the mixed and chronic types belong to old age and the elderly.
कासश्वासक्षयच्छर्दिस्वरसादादयो गदाः । भवन्त्युपेक्षया यस्मात्तस्मात्तास्त्वरया जयेत् ॥ १,१४९.
Cough, breathlessness, wasting, vomiting, hoarseness, and other diseases arise from neglect; therefore, one should conquer them quickly.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १५० धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । अथातः श्वासरोगस्य निदानं प्रवदाम्यहम् । कासवृद्ध्या भवेच्छ्वासः पूर्वैर्वा दोषकोपनैः ॥ १,१५०.
Dhanvantari said: Now, I shall explain the causes of breathlessness; it arises from the increase of cough or from the prior aggravation of the humors.
आमातिसारवमथुविषपाण्डुज्वरैरपि । रजोधूमानिलैर्मर्मघातादपि हिमाम्बुना ॥ १,१५०.
It also arises from indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, poisoning, anemia, fever, dust, smoke, wind, injury to vital spots, or cold water.
क्षुद्रकस्तमकश्छिन्नो महानूर्ध्वश्च पञ्चमः । कफोपरुद्धगमनपवनो विष्वगास्थितः ॥ १,१५०.
There are five types: minor, darkness, broken, great, and upward; the wind, obstructed by phlegm, moves erratically and becomes established everywhere.
प्राणोदकान्नवाहीनि दुष्टस्रोतांसि दूषयन् । उरः स्थः कुरुते श्वासमामाशयसमुद्भवम् ॥ १,१५०.
Corrupting the channels that carry breath, water, and food, the vitiated wind, residing in the chest, produces breathlessness arising from undigested food in the stomach.
प्राग्रूपं तस्य हृत्पार्श्वशूलं प्राणविलोमता । आनाहः शङ्खभेदश्च तत्रायासोऽतिभोजनैः ॥ १,१५०.
Its early symptoms are pain in the heart and sides, irregular breathing, abdominal distension, and splitting pain in the temples; exertion and overeating worsen it.
प्रेरितः प्रेरयन्क्षुद्रं स्वयं स समलं मरुत् । प्रतिलोमं शिरा गच्छेदुदीर्य पवनः कफम् ॥ १,१५०.
Driven and driving, the impure wind itself moves in a reverse direction, ascending the channels, and expels phlegm.
परिगृह्यशिरोग्रीवमुरः पार्श्वे च पीडयन् । कासं घुर्घुरकं मोहमरुचिम्पीनसं भृशम् ॥ १,१५०.
Seizing the head, neck, chest, and sides, it causes cough, rattling sounds, fainting, loss of appetite, and severe nasal congestion.
करोति तीव्रवेगञ्च श्वासं प्राणोपतापिनम् । प्रताम्येत्तस्य वेगेनष्ठीवनान्ते क्षणं सुखी ॥ १,१५०.
It produces intense, rapid breathlessness that torments the life-breath; the patient faints from its force, but after spitting, feels relief for a moment.
कृच्छ्राच्छयानः श्वसिति निषण्णः स्वास्थ्यमर्हति । उच्छ्रिताक्षो ललाटेन स्विद्यता भृशमार्तिमान् ॥ १,१५०.
With difficulty lying down, he breathes heavily; when seated, he feels better; his eyes are wide, his forehead sweats, and he is greatly afflicted.
विशुष्कास्यो मुहुः श्वासः काङ्क्षत्युष्णं सवेपथुः । मेघाम्बुशीतप्राग्वातैः श्लेष्मलैश्च विवर्धते ॥ १,१५०.
His mouth is dry, he breathes repeatedly, desires warmth, and trembles; it worsens with cold clouds, water, east wind, and phlegmatic conditions.
स याप्यस्तमकः साध्यो नरस्य बलिनो भवेत् । ज्वरमूर्छावतः सीतैर्न शाम्येत्प्रथमस्तु सः ॥ १,१५०.
This chronic darkness type is curable in a strong man; but in one with fever or fainting, or who is cold, it does not subside at first.
कासश्वसितवच्छीर्णमर्मच्छेदरुजार्दितः । सस्वेदमूर्छः सानाहो बस्तिदाहविबोधवान् ॥ १,१५०.
Afflicted like those with cough and breathlessness, he suffers pain from injury to vital spots, sweats, faints, has abdominal distension, burning in the bladder, and disturbed sleep.
अधोदृष्टिः शुताक्षस्तु स्निह्यद्रक्तैकलोचनः । शुष्कास्यः प्रलपन्दीनो नष्टच्छायो विचेतनः ॥ १,१५०.
His gaze is downward, his eyes are sunken, the whites are tinged with red, his mouth is dry, he babbles incoherently, his complexion is lost, and he is unconscious.
