कोद्रवोद्दालकैश्चान्यैस्तदुक्तैरति सेवितैः । कुपितं पैत्तिकैः पित्तं द्रवं रक्तञ्च मूर्छति ॥ १,१४८.
By eating kodrava, uddālaka, and other such foods repeatedly mentioned, and by excessive use of bile-provoking substances, bile becomes aggravated, turns fluid, and blood is disturbed.
तैर्मिथस्तुल्यरूपत्वमागम्य व्याप्नुवंस्तनुम् । पित्तरक्तस्य विकृतेः संसर्गाद्दषणादपि ॥ १,१४८.
When these combine and attain similarity in form, they spread throughout the body; the disorder of bile and blood arises from their mixture, even from a bite.
गन्धवर्णानुवृत्तेषु रक्तेन व्यपदिश्यते । प्रभवत्यसृजः स्थानात्प्लीहतो यकृतश्च सः ॥ १,१४८.
When blood displays the same smell and color as bile, it is identified as such; it arises from the sites of blood, from the spleen, and from the liver.
शिरोगुरुत्वमरुचिः शीतेच्छा धूमकोऽम्लकः । छर्धितश्छर्दिबै भत्स्यं कासः श्वासो भ्रमः क्लमः ॥ १,१४८.
Heaviness of the head, loss of taste, desire for cold, smoky or sour eructation, vomiting, aversion to food, cough, shortness of breath, dizziness, and fatigue occur.
लोहितो न हितो मत्स्यगन्धास्यात्वञ्च विज्वरे । रक्तहारिद्रहरितवर्णता नयनादिषु ॥ १,१४८.
The blood is not healthy, the mouth smells like fish, and in the absence of fever, there is redness, yellowish or greenish color in the eyes and other organs.
नीललोहित पीतानां वर्णानामविवेचनम् । स्वप्ने इन्मादधर्मित्वं भवत्यस्मिन्भविष्यति ॥ १,१४८.
There is inability to distinguish between blue, red, and yellow colors; in dreams, madness and unrighteousness will manifest in this condition.
उर्ध्वं नासाक्षिकर्णास्यैर्मेढ्रयोनिगुदैरधः । कुपितं रोमकूपैश्च समस्तैस्तत्प्रवर्तते ॥ १,१४८.
Upwards, it emerges from the nose, eyes, ears, and mouth; downwards, from the genitals and anus; and it also appears from the hair follicles—all these are its outlets when aggravated.
ऊर्ध्वं साध्यं कफाद्यस्मात्तद्विरेचनसाधितम् । बह्वौषधानि पित्तस्य विरेको हि वरौषधम् ॥ १,१४८.
When associated with phlegm, it is curable by purgation; many medicines are prescribed for bile, but purgation is the best remedy.
अनुबन्धी कफो यत्र तत्र तस्यापि शुद्धिकृत् । कषायाः स्वादवो यस्य विशुद्धौ श्लेष्मला हिताः ॥ १,१४८.
Where phlegm is also present, purification is beneficial; astringent and sweet tastes are suitable for cleansing phlegmatic disorders.
कटुतिक्तकषाया वा ये निसर्गात्कफावहाः । अधो याप्यञ्च नायुष्मांस्तत्प्रच्छर्दनसाधकम् ॥ १,१४८.
Those substances that are naturally pungent, bitter, or astringent, and remove phlegm, are suitable for downward-moving and chronic cases, and are treated by emesis.
अल्पौषधञ्च पित्तस्य वमनं नावमौषधम् । अनुबन्धि बलं यस्य शान्तपित्तनरस्य च ॥ १,१४८.
For bile with little strength, emesis is not the best remedy; where strength is associated, and in those with pacified bile, it is appropriate.
कषायश्च हितस्तस्य मधुरा एव केवलम् । कफमारुतसंस्पृष्टमसाध्यमुपनामनम् ॥ १,१४८.
Astringent substances are beneficial for him, and only sweet ones; when phlegm and wind are involved, it is incurable and named accordingly.
असह्यं प्रतिलोमत्वादसाध्यादौषधस्य च । न हि संशोधनं किञ्चिदस्य च प्रतिलोमिनः ॥ १,१४८.
When intolerable and contrary in direction, and when medicine is ineffective, no purification is possible for that which is contrary in direction.
शोधनं प्रतिलोमञ्च रक्तपित्तेऽभिसर्जितम् । एवमेवोपशमनं संशोधनमिहेष्यते ॥ १,१४८.
Purification in the contrary direction is prescribed in blood-bile disorders; likewise, pacification and purification are to be sought here.
संसृष्टेषु हि दोषेषु सर्वथा छर्दनं हितम् । तत्र दोषोऽत्र गमनं शिवास्त्र इव लक्ष्यते ॥ १,१४८.
When faults are mixed together, expulsion in every way is beneficial; in that case, the fault of remaining is regarded here like a missile of Shiva.
उपद्रवाश्च विकृतिं फलतस्तेषु साधितम् ॥ १,१४८.
Complications also produce distortion, and their results are thus established.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १४९ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । आशुकारी यतः कासः स एवातः प्रवक्ष्यते । पञ्च कासाः स्मृता वातपित्तश्लेष्मक्षतक्षयैः ॥ १,१४९.
Dhanvantari said: Since cough acts quickly, it will now be described; five types of cough are recognized—arising from wind, bile, phlegm, injury, and wasting.
क्षयायोपेक्षिताः सर्वे बलिनश्चोत्तरोत्तरम् । तेषां भविष्यतां रूपं कण्ठे कण्डूररोचकः ॥ १,१४९.
All those associated with wasting, when neglected, become increasingly strong; their symptoms appear as itching and loss of taste in the throat.
शुष्ककर्णास्यकण्ठत्वं तत्राधोविहितोऽनिलः । ऊर्ध्वं प्रवृत्तः प्राप्यो रस्तस्मिन्कण्ठे च संसृजन् ॥ १,१४९.
Dryness of the ears, mouth, and throat occurs there, caused by downward-moving wind; when it moves upward, it reaches and accumulates in the throat.
शिरास्रोतांसि संपूर्य ततोऽङ्गान्युत्क्षिपन्ति च । क्षिपन्निवाक्षिणी क्लिष्टस्वरः पार्श्वे च पीडयन् ॥ १,१४९.
Filling the veins and channels, it then lifts the limbs; as if throwing, it causes pain in the eyes, a strained voice, and presses on the side.
प्रवर्तते सवक्रेण भिन्नकांस्योपमध्वनिः । हृत्पार्श्वेरुशिरः शूलमोहक्षोभस्वरक्षयान् ॥ १,१४९.
It manifests with a crooked sound, resembling broken bronze; it brings pain in the heart, side, head, confusion, agitation, and loss of voice.
करोति शुष्ककासञ्च महावेगरुजास्वनम् । सोंगहर्षो कफं शुष्कं कृछ्रान्मुक्त्वाल्पतां व्रजेत् ॥ १,१४९.
It produces a dry cough, severe pain, and a harsh sound; with horripilation, it expels dry phlegm with difficulty, and then diminishes.
पित्तात्पीताक्षिकत्वं च तिक्तास्यत्वं ज्वरो भ्रमः । पित्तासृग्वमनं तृष्णा वैस्वर्यं धूमको मदः ॥ १,१४९.
From bile arise yellowing of the eyes, bitterness in the mouth, fever, dizziness, vomiting of bile and blood, thirst, hoarseness, a smoky feeling, and intoxication.
प्रततं कासवेगे च ज्योतिषामिव दर्शनम् । कफादुरोऽल्परुङ्मूर्धि हृदयं स्तिमिते गुरु ॥ १,१४९.
With persistent cough, vision appears as if seeing lights; from phlegm, there is little pain in the head, the heart feels heavy and dull.
कण्ठे प्रलेपमदजं पीनसच्छर्द्यरोचकाः । रोमहर्षो धनस्निग्धंश्लेष्मणाञ्च प्रवर्तनम् ॥ १,१४९.
There is coating in the throat, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, vomiting, and lack of taste; horripilation, thick and oily phlegm, and its increased production.
युद्धाद्यैः साहसैस्तैस्तैः सेवितैरयथाबलम् । उपस्यन्तः क्षतो वायुः पित्तेनानुगतो बली ॥ १,१४९.
By engaging in various strenuous acts like battle, beyond one's strength, wind is afflicted, joined by bile, and becomes powerful.
कुपितः कुरुते कासं कफं तेन सशोणितम् । पीतं श्यावञ्च शुष्कञ्च ग्रथितं कुपितं बहु ॥ १,१४९.
When disturbed, it causes cough with phlegm mixed with blood, yellow, dark, dry, clotted, abundant, and aggravated.
ष्ठीवेत्कण्ठेन रुजता विभिन्नेनैव चोरसा । सूचीभिरिव तीक्ष्णाभिस्तुद्यमानेन शूलिना ॥ १,१४९.
He spits painfully from the throat, with the chest feeling split, as if pierced by sharp needles or struck by a spear.
दुः खस्पर्शेन शूलेन भेदपीडाहितापिना । पर्वभेदज्वरश्वासतृष्णावैस्वर्यकम्पवान् ॥ १,१४९.
With painful touch, piercing pain, splitting and oppressive suffering, there is breaking of the joints, fever, shortness of breath, thirst, hoarseness, and trembling.
पारावत इवोत्कूजन्पार्श्वशूली ततोऽस्य च । कफाद्यैर्वमनं पक्तिबलवर्णञ्च हीयते ॥ १,१४९.
He coos like a pigeon, has pain in the side, and due to phlegm and other causes, vomiting occurs, and strength, complexion, and digestion are diminished.
