From poison come fainting, diarrhea, darkening, burning, and dizziness; from anger, trembling and headache; from fear and grief, delirium.
From desire arise dizziness, loss of appetite, burning, shame, sleep, intellect, and memory; in possession and similar cases, the symptoms of combined humors and, at the beginning, of wind and the others.
Of the fevers arising from anger or even from excessive anger of bile, those caused by curses and black magic, the two severe fevers of deranged humors are considered the most unbearable.
Afflicted by spells and incantations of sorcery, the body is tormented; at first, this affects the body, and then eruptions and disorientation follow.
For one always seized by burning and fainting, the fever increases daily; thus, fever is seen in eight forms, but in summary, it is of two kinds.
It is bodily or mental, gentle or intense, internal or external in origin; natural or unnatural, curable or incurable, simple or without complications.
At first, heat arises in the body in bodily fever, and in the mind in mental fever; due to the influence of wind, coldness occurs when phlegm is present.
Burning occurs when bile is involved; when mixed, it again takes refuge internally; in fever, greater disorders arise, with internal agitation and retention of wastes.
When the force is external, the heat is also external and thus established; in the rainy, autumn, and spring seasons, fever arises from wind and other humors in due order.
The unnatural type is different and difficult to cure, while the natural one mostly arises from wind; in the rains, disturbed wind causes fever associated with bile and phlegm.
In autumn, it produces bile, and phlegm follows it; due to the nature and release of these, there is no danger from eating various foods at that time.
Phlegm predominates in spring, and then wind and bile may follow; when the disorder is mild, fever is curable and without complications.
In all cases, when the disorder is recognized, it is said to be incurable beforehand; the severity of fever's complications includes weak digestion and excessive urination.
There is no appetite, no proper digestion, no hunger, and the fever has a characteristic appearance; the fever's intensity increases, with thirst, delirium, labored breathing, and dizziness.
The urge to pass waste and its disturbance are signs of the fever maturing; if there is no reversal, fasting for seven nights brings resolution.
Fever is said to be of five kinds, depending on waste, time, strength, and weakness; but most often, it is described as arising from the derangement of all three humors.
Continuous, constant, every other day, third day, and fourth day fevers—these are carried by the humors, urine, and feces, and are widespread due to the wastes.
They heat the entire body, increasing equally from the beginning; they are strong and heavy, residing in the vital fluids without distinction.
Constant, without any opposition, such fever is extremely hard to endure; fever or heat, or the disturbed humors, quickly destroy the body.
In all forms, whether the vital fluids and others are pure or impure in due course, wind, bile, and phlegm cause fever in seven, six, or twelve days.
Generally, the boundary is followed for both liberation and destruction; this is the opinion of Agnivesha, and again the tradition of Harita.
The seventh day, which is doubled, as well as the ninth and eleventh; this is the boundary of the three doshas, for both liberation and destruction.
Due to purity or impurity, fever may persist for a long time here, especially in those who are emaciated, afflicted by disease, or who indulge in improper diet and similar habits.
Even a small defect, having gained strength from impurity or other causes, becomes antagonistic and irregular, because it is accompanied by increase and decrease.
With disturbance, it produces fever, having irregular increase and decrease; the dosha acts in them, fevering strongly at its own time.
It ceases again, with the strength or weakness of the antagonist; when the dosha is diminished, the subtle fever merges only into the fluids and so forth.
Because of merging, it causes emaciation, discoloration, dullness, and similar conditions; due to the proximity of altered mouths of the channels carrying fluids.
The defect does not quickly spread throughout the whole body; those who are virtuous are always thus, but the opposite occurs in the contrary case.
Irregular, with irregular onset, joined with the time of night; the dosha, residing in the blood, generally produces continuous fever.
At the junction of day and night, it occurs once, and on another day it is based; in that, the flesh-carrying channel, the fat channel, is in the third instance.
