दोषत्रयकरैस्तैस्तैस्तथान्नपरिवर्ततः । धातोर्दुष्टात्पुरो वाताद्द्विग्रहावेशविप्लवात् ॥ १,१४६.
By these and other foods that disturb the three humors, or from corrupted bodily tissues, or from wind due to conflict, possession, or agitation—
दुष्टामान्नैरतिश्लैष्मग्रहैर्जन्मर्क्षपीडनात् । मिथ्यायोगाच्च विविधात्पापानाञ्च निषेवणात् । स्त्रीणां प्रसववैषम्यात्तथा मिथ्योपचारतः ॥ १,१४६.
From corrupted food, excessive phlegm, planetary afflictions at birth, improper practices, indulgence in various sins, irregularities during childbirth for women, and improper treatments—
प्रतिरोगमिति क्रुद्धा रोगविध्यनुगामिनः । रसायनं प्रपद्याशु दोषा देहे विकुर्वते ॥ १,१४६.
When the humors, angered by these diseases, follow the course of illness, one should quickly resort to rejuvenation therapy, for the humors soon become disturbed in the body.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १४७ धन्वन्तरिरुवाच । वक्ष्ये ज्वरनिदानं हि सर्वज्वरविबुद्धये । ज्वरो रोगपतिः पाप्मा मृत्युराजोऽशनोऽन्तकः । क्रुद्धदक्षाध्वरध्वंसिरुद्रोर्ध्वनयनोद्भवः ॥ १,१४७.
Dhanvantari said: I shall now explain the origin of fever, for the understanding of all fevers. Fever is the lord of diseases, sin, king of death, the devourer, the ender; it arose from the wrath of Rudra, who destroyed Daksha’s sacrifice.
तत्सन्तापो मोहमयः सन्तापात्मापचारजः । विविधैर्नामभिः क्रूरो नानायोनिषु वर्तते ॥ १,१४७.
That fever, full of burning and delusion, born of transgression, is fierce and known by many names, and manifests in various forms among all beings.
पाकलो गजेष्वभितापो वाजिष्वलर्कः कुक्रुरेषु । इन्द्रमदो जलदेष्वप्सु नीलिका ज्योतिरोषधीषु भूम्यामूषरो नाम ॥ १,१४७.
In elephants it is called Pākala, in horses Abhitāpa, in donkeys Alarka, in dogs Kukrura; in clouds Indramada, in water Nīlikā, in luminous herbs Jyoti, and in the earth Ūṣara.
हृल्लासश्छर्दनं कासः स्तंभः शैत्य त्वगादिषु । अङ्गेषु च समुद्भूताः पिडकाश्च कफोद्भवे ॥ १,१४७.
Nausea, vomiting, cough, stiffness, coldness, and eruptions on the skin and limbs—these arise from phlegm.
काले यथास्वं सर्वेषां प्रवृत्तिर्वृद्धिरेव वा । निदानोक्तोनुपशयो विपरीतोपशायिता ॥ १,१४७.
In each season, the onset and increase of all these occur as appropriate; the alleviation is as stated in the causes, and the opposite brings relief.
अरुचिश्चाविपाकश्च स्तंभमालस्यमेव च । हृद्दाहश्च विपाकश्च तन्द्रा चालस्यमेव च । वस्तिर्विमर्दावनया दोषाणामप्रवर्तनम् ॥ १,१४७.
Loss of appetite, indigestion, stiffness, and lethargy; burning in the heart, improper digestion, drowsiness, and fatigue; distension, pain, and inactivity of the humors—these are their signs.
लालाप्रसेको हृल्लासः क्षुन्नाशो रसदं मुखम् । स्वच्छमुष्णगुरुत्वञ्च गात्राणां बहुमूत्रता । न विजीर्णं न च म्लानिर्ज्वरस्यामस्य लक्षणम् ॥ १,१४७.
Excessive salivation, nausea, loss of hunger, tastelessness in the mouth, clarity, heat, and heaviness of the limbs, frequent urination—these are not signs of digested food nor of malaise, but are symptoms of undigested fever.
क्षुत्क्षामता लघुत्वं च गात्राणां ज्वरमार्दवम् । दोषप्रवृत्तिरष्टाहान्निरामज्वरलक्षणम् ॥ १,१४७.
Hunger, dryness, lightness of the limbs, and the tenderness of fever; the activity of the humors after eight days—these are the signs of fever when digestion is complete.
यथा स्वलिङ्गं संसर्गे ज्वरसंसर्गजोऽपि वा । शिरोर्तिमूर्छावमिदेहदाहकण्ठास्यशोषारुचिपर्वभेदाः । उन्निद्रता संभ्रमरोमहर्षा जृंभातिवाक्त्वं पवनात्सपित्तात् ॥ १,१४७.
Whether by its own symptoms or by contagion, fever arising from contact shows: headache, fainting, vomiting, burning of the body, dryness of throat and mouth, loss of taste, pain in the joints, insomnia, confusion, horripilation, yawning, and excessive speech—these come from wind and bile.
तापहान्यरुचिपर्वशिरोरुक्ष्ठीवनश्वसनकासविवर्णाः । शीतजाड्यतिमिरभ्रमितन्द्राश्लेष्मवातजनितज्वरलिङ्गम् ॥ १,१४७.
Loss of heat, loss of appetite, joint and head pain, spitting, labored breathing, cough, pallor, coldness, stiffness, darkness before the eyes, dizziness, drowsiness—these are the symptoms of fever caused by phlegm and wind.
शीतस्तम्भस्वेददाहाव्यवस्थास्तृष्णा कासः श्लेष्मपित्तप्रवृत्तिः । मोहस्तन्द्रालिप्ततिक्तास्यता च ज्ञेयं रूपं श्लेष्मपित्तज्वरस्य ॥ १,१४७.
Coldness, stiffness, sweating, burning, instability, thirst, cough, the activity of phlegm and bile, confusion, drowsiness, coating and bitterness of the mouth—these are known as the features of fever arising from phlegm and bile.
सर्वजो लक्षणैः सर्वैर्दाहोऽत्र च मुहुर्मुहुः । तदुच्छीतं महा निद्रा दिवा जागरणं निशि ॥ १,१४७.
The one who knows all, with all the signs, here experiences repeated burning; then there is intense sleep, wakefulness during the day, and sleeplessness at night.
सदा वा नैव वा निद्रा महास्वेदो हि नैव वा । गीतनर्तनहास्यादिः प्रकृतेहाप्रवर्तनम् ॥ १,१४७.
There may always be sleep, or none at all; there may be profuse sweating, or not; singing, dancing, laughter, and such activities cease from their natural course.
साश्रुणी कलुषे रक्ते भुग्ने लुलितपक्ष्मणी । अक्षिणी पिण्डिकापार्श्वशिरः पर्वास्थिरुग्भ्रमः ॥ १,१४७.
The eyes are tearful, impure, red, sunken, with trembling lashes; there is pain at the sides of the eyeballs, in the head, joints, and bones, and dizziness.
सस्वनौ सरुजौ कर्णौ महाशीतौ हि नैव वा । परिदग्धा खरा जिह्वा गुरुस्त्रस्ताङ्गसन्धिता ॥ १,१४७.
The ears are ringing and painful, or extremely cold, or not; the tongue is burnt, rough, heavy, and the joints of the limbs are weak and trembling.
ष्ठीवनं रक्तपित्तस्य लोठनं शिरसोऽतितृट् । कोष्ठानां श्यावरक्तानां मण्डलानां च दर्शनम् ॥ १,१४७.
There is spitting of blood and bile, rolling of the head, intense thirst; and the appearance of dark or red patches and circles on the body.
हृद्व्यथा मलंससर्गः प्रवृत्तिर्वाल्पशोऽति वा । स्निग्धास्यता बलभ्रंशः स्वरसादः प्रलापितः ॥ १,१४७.
There is pain in the heart, frequent excretion of waste, scanty or excessive discharges, oily mouth, loss of strength, hoarseness of voice, and delirious speech.
दोषपाकश्चिरं तन्द्रा प्रततं कण्ठकूजनम् । सन्निपातमभिन्यासं तं ब्रूयाच्च हतौजसम् ॥ १,१४७.
There is prolonged ripening of the humors, persistent drowsiness, constant croaking in the throat; when all the humors are disturbed together, it is said to destroy vitality.
वायुना कण्ठरुद्धेन पित्तमन्तः सुपीडितम् । व्यवायित्वाच्च सौख्याच्च बहिर्मर्गं प्रपद्यते । तेन हारिद्रनेत्रत्वं सन्निपातोद्भवेज्वरे ॥ १,१४७.
When the wind is obstructed in the throat and bile is greatly oppressed within, after intercourse or pleasure, it seeks an external path; thus, yellowing of the eyes arises in fever caused by the combined disturbance of humors.
दोषे विवृद्धे नष्टेऽग्नौ सर्वसंपूर्णलक्षणः । सान्निपातज्वरोऽसाध्यः कृच्छ्रसाध्यस्ततोऽन्यथा ॥ १,१४७.
When the humors are increased and the digestive fire is lost, and all the signs are present, the fever from combined humors is incurable; otherwise, it is difficult but curable.
अन्यत्र सन्निपातोत्थं यत्र पित्तं पृथक्स्थितम् । त्वचि कोष्ठे च वा दाहं विदधाति पुरोऽनु वा ॥ १,१४७.
Elsewhere, when fever arises from the combination of humors but bile is separately situated, it causes burning in the skin or abdomen, either before or after.
तद्वद्वातकफे शीतं दाहादिर्दुस्तरस्तयोः । शीतादौ तत्र पित्तेन कफे स्यान्दितशोषिते ॥ १,१४७.
Likewise, in the case of wind and phlegm, there is coldness; burning and similar symptoms are hard to overcome when both are involved. In the beginning of coldness, bile is present; with phlegm, there is oozing and dryness.
पित्ते शान्तेऽथ वै मूर्छा मदस्तृष्णा च जायते । दाहादौ पुनरन्तेषु तन्द्रालस्ये वमिः क्रमात् ॥ १,१४७.
When bile is pacified, then fainting, intoxication, and thirst arise; but at the onset of burning, and in the others, there is drowsiness, lethargy, and vomiting in order.
आगन्तुरभिगाताभिषङ्गशापाभिचारतः । चतुर्धा तु कृतः स्वेदो दाहाद्यैरभिघातजः ॥ १,१४७.
Fever is fourfold, arising from external injury, contact, curses, or sorcery; fever from injury is marked by burning and similar symptoms.
श्रमाच्च तस्मिन्पवनः प्रायो रक्तं प्रदूषयन् । सव्यथाशोकवैवर्ण्यं सरुजं कुरुते ज्वरम् ॥ १,१४७.
From exertion, wind commonly vitiates the blood there, causing pain, grief, discoloration, and fever with pain.
ग्रहावेशौषधिविषक्रोधभीशोककामजः ॥ १,१४७.
Fever arises from possession by spirits, medicines, poison, anger, fear, grief, or desire.
अभिषङ्गग्रहोऽप्यस्मिन्नकस्माद्वासरोदने । ओषधीगन्धजे मूर्छा शिरोरुग्वमथुः क्षयः ॥ १,१४७.
In this, sudden possession or contact may occur, or from the smell of medicines; fainting, headache, vomiting, and wasting arise from the scent of herbs.
