लक्ष्मणेनानुकूलेन ह्ययोध्यां स्वपुरीं गतः । राज्यं चकार देवादीन्पालयामास स प्रजाः ॥ १,१४२.
With Lakṣmaṇa, who was favorable, he went to Ayodhyā, his own city; he ruled the kingdom and protected the people, along with the gods and others.
धर्मसंरक्षणं चक्रे ह्यश्वमेधादिकान्क्रतून् । सा महीपतिना रेमे रामेणैव यथासुखम् ॥ १,१४२.
He maintained the protection of dharma and performed sacrifices such as the aśvamedha; that earth rejoiced under the rule of Rāma, the king, as she wished.
रावणस्य गृहे सीता स्थिता भेजे न रावणम् । कर्मणा मनसा वाचा सा गता राघवं सदा ॥ १,१४२.
Sītā, though dwelling in the house of Rāvaṇa, did not turn to him; by deed, mind, and speech, she was always devoted to Rāghava.
पतिव्रता तु सा सीता ह्यनसूया यथैव तु । पतिव्रताया माहात्म्यं शृणु त्वं कथयाम्यहम् ॥ १,१४२.
That Sītā was truly devoted to her husband, just as Anasūyā was; now listen, I will tell you the greatness of a devoted wife.
कौशिको ब्राह्मणः कुष्ठी प्रतिष्ठानेऽभवत्पुरा । तं तथा व्याधितं भार्या पतिं देवमिवार्चयत् ॥ १,१४२.
Once, in the city of Pratiṣṭhāna, there was a brāhmaṇa named Kauśika, afflicted with leprosy; his wife worshipped her husband as if he were a god, even in that condition.
निर्भर्त्सितापि भर्तारं तममन्यत दैवतम् । भर्त्रोक्ता सानयद्वेश्यां शुल्कमादाय चाधिकम् ॥ १,१४२.
Even when reproached, she regarded her husband as a deity; at his command, she took a hated woman and brought back extra payment.
पथि सूले तदा प्रोतमचौरं चौरशङ्कया । माण्डव्यमतिदुः खार्तमन्धकारेऽथ स द्विजः ॥ १,१४२.
On the road, there was a thief impaled on a stake, suspected of theft; Māṇḍavya, greatly afflicted, was there in the darkness, and that brāhmaṇa too.
पत्नीस्कन्धसमारूढश्चालयामास कौशिकः । पादावमर्शणत्क्रुद्धो माण्डव्यस्तमुवाच ह ॥ १,१४२.
Kauśika, carrying his wife on his shoulder, brushed against Māṇḍavya's feet; Māṇḍavya, angered by the touch, spoke to him.
सूर्योदये मृतिस्तस्य येनाहं चालितः पदा । तच्छ्रुत्वा प्राह तद्भार्या सूर्यो नोदयमेष्यति ॥ १,१४२.
He said, 'At sunrise, you shall die, for you have disturbed me with your foot.' Hearing this, his wife replied, 'The sun will not rise.'
ततः सूर्योदयाभावाद भवत्सततं निशा । बहून्यब्दप्रमाणानि ततो देवा भयं ययुः ॥ १,१४२.
Then, because the sun did not rise, night continued endlessly for many years; therefore, the gods became afraid.
ब्रह्माणं शरणं जग्मुस्तामूचे पद्मसम्भवः । प्रशाम्यते तेजसैव तपस्तेजस्त्वनेन वै ॥ १,१४२.
They sought refuge in Brahmā; the Lotus-born spoke to them: 'This ascetic heat is pacified only by ascetic heat itself.'
पतिव्रताया माहात्म्यान्नोद्गच्छति दिवाकरः । तस्य चानुदयाद्धानिर्मर्त्यानां भवतां तथा ॥ १,१४२.
Because of the greatness of the devoted wife, the sun does not rise; and due to his not rising, there is darkness for mortals, including you.
तस्मात्पतिव्रतामत्रेरनसूयां तपस्विनीम् । प्रसादयत वै पत्नीं भानोरुदयकाम्यया ॥ १,१४२.
Therefore, appease the devoted and ascetic Anasūyā, the wife, in order to bring about the sun’s rising.
तैः सा प्रसादिता गत्वा ह्यनसूया पतिव्रता । कृत्वादित्योदयं सा च तं भर्तारमजीवयत् । पतिव्रतानसूयायाः सीताभूदधिका किल ॥ १,१४२.
Having gone to her, they appeased Anasūyā, the devoted wife; she caused the sun to rise and revived her husband. Indeed, Sītā was surpassed by the devoted Anasūyā.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १४३ ब्रह्मोवाच । रामायणमतो वक्ष्ये श्रुतं पापविनाशनम् । विष्णुनाभ्यब्जतो ब्रह्मा मरीचिस्तत्सुतोऽभवत् ॥ १,१४३.
Brahmā said: Now I shall recount the Rāmāyaṇa, which destroys sin, as heard; from Viṣṇu’s navel was born Brahmā, and his son was Marīci.
मरीचेः कश्यपस्तस्माद्रविस्तस्मान्मनुः स्मृतः । मनोरिक्ष्वाकुरस्याभूद्वंशे राजा रघुः स्मृतः ॥ १,१४३.
From Marīci came Kaśyapa, from him was born Rivi, and from Rivi, Manu is remembered; in Manu’s lineage, Ikṣvāku was born, and in Ikṣvāku’s, the king Raghu is remembered.
रघोरजस्ततो जातो राजा दशरथो बली । तस्य पुत्रास्तु चत्वारो महाबलपराक्रमाः ॥ १,१४३.
From Raghu was born Aja, and from Aja, the mighty king Daśaratha; his four sons were of great strength and valor.
कौसल्यायाम भूद्रामो भरतः कैकयीसुतः । सुतौ लक्ष्मणशक्षुघ्नौ सुमित्रायां बभूवतुः ॥ १,१४३.
Rāma was born to Kausalyā, Bharata was the son of Kaikeyī; and to Sumitrā were born the two sons, Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna.
रामो भक्तः पितुर्मातुर्विश्वामित्रादवाप्तवान् । अस्त्रग्रामं ततो यक्षीं ताटकां प्रजघान ह ॥ १,१४३.
Rāma, devoted to his father and mother, received the collection of weapons from Viśvāmitra; then he slew the yakṣī Tāṭakā.
विशावमित्रस्य यज्ञे वै सुबाहुं न्यवधीद्बली । जनकस्य क्रतुं गत्वा उपयेमेऽथ जानकीम् ॥ १,१४३.
At Viśvāmitra’s sacrifice, the mighty one slew Subāhu; then, going to Janaka’s sacrifice, he married Jānakī.
ऊर्मिलां लक्ष्मणो वीरो भरतो माण्डवीं सुताम् । शत्रुघ्नो वै कीर्तिमतीं कुशध्वजसुते उभे ॥ १,१४३.
The hero Lakṣmaṇa married Ūrmilā, Bharata married Māṇḍavī, and Śatrughna married both Kīrtimatī and the daughter of Kuśadhvaja.
पित्रादिभिरयोध्यायां गत्वा रामादयः स्थिताः । युधाजितं मातुलञ्च शत्रुघ्नभरतौ गतौ ॥ १,१४३.
Then Rāma and the others, along with their fathers, went to Ayodhyā and dwelt there; Śatrughna and Bharata went to Yudhājit, their maternal uncle.
गतयोर्नृपवर्योऽसौ राज्यं दातुं समुद्यतः । स रामाय तत्पुत्राय कैकेय्या प्रार्थितस्तदा ॥ १,१४३.
When they had gone, that excellent king was ready to give the kingdom; at that time, at the request of Kaikeyī, he intended it for her son.
चतुर्दशसमावासो वनेरामस्य वाञ्छितः । रामः पितृहितार्थञ्च लक्ष्मणेन च सीतया ॥ १,१४३.
A fourteen-year stay in the forest was desired for Rāma; for the sake of his father’s welfare, Rāma went with Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā.
राज्यञ्च तृणवत्त्यक्त्वा शृङ्गवेरपुरं गतः । रथं त्यक्त्वा प्रयागञ्च चित्रकूटगिरिं गतः ॥ १,१४३.
Abandoning the kingdom as if it were straw, he went to Śṛṅgaverapura; leaving the chariot, he went to Prayāga and then to Citrakūṭa mountain.
रामस्य तु वियोगेन राजा स्वर्गं समाश्रितः । संस्कृत्य भरतश्चागाद्राममाह बलान्वितः ॥ १,१४३.
Due to separation from Rāma, the king attained heaven; after performing the rites, Bharata came, accompanied by his forces, and addressed Rāma.
अयोध्यान्तु समागत्य राज्यं कुरु महामते । स नैच्छत्पादुके दत्त्वा राज्याय भरताय तु ॥ १,१४३.
Coming to Ayodhyā, he said, 'Rule the kingdom, O wise one.' But Rāma did not wish it; giving his sandals for the kingdom to Bharata.
विसर्जितोऽथ भरतो रामराज्यमपालयत् । नन्दिग्रामे स्थितो भक्तो ह्ययोध्यां नाविशद्व्रती ॥ १,१४३.
Then Bharata, having been dismissed, governed Rāma’s kingdom; dwelling in Nandigrāma, devoted and observant of vows, he did not enter Ayodhyā.
रामोऽपि चित्रकूटाच्च ह्यत्रेराश्रममाययौ । नत्वा सुतीक्ष्णं चागस्त्यं दण्डकारण्यमागतः ॥ १,१४३.
Rama, departing from Chitrakuta, came to the hermitage of Atri; after bowing to Sutikshna and Agastya, he entered the Dandaka forest.
तत्र शूर्पणखा नाम राक्षसी चात्तुमागता । निकृत्य कर्णो नासे च रामेणाथापवारिता ॥ १,१४३.
There, a rakshasi named Shurpanakha approached with hostile intent; Rama cut off her ears and nose, and drove her away.
