सुमतिः सुबलो नीतो सत्यजिद्विश्वजित्तथा । इषुञ्जयश्च इत्येते नृपा बार्हद्रथाः स्मृताः ॥ १,१४१.
Sumati, Subala, Nīta, Satyajit, Viśvajit, and Iṣuñjaya—these kings are remembered as the Bārhadrathas.
अधर्मिष्ठाश्च शूद्राश्च भविष्यन्ति नृपास्ततः । स्वर्गादिकृद्धि भगवान्साक्षान्नारायणोऽव्ययः ॥ १,१४१.
After them, there will be kings who are most unrighteous and of the Śūdra class; then, the blessed, eternal Nārāyaṇa himself, the source of heaven and so forth, will descend.
नैमित्तिकः प्राकृतिकस्तथैवात्यन्तिको लयः । याति भूः प्रलयं चाप्सु ह्यापस्तेजसि पावकः ॥ १,१४१.
There is the occasional, the elemental, and the absolute dissolution; the earth goes to destruction in the waters, the waters into fire, and fire into air.
वायौ वायुश्च वियति त्वाकाशौ यात्यहङ्कृतौ । अहं बुद्धौ मतिर्जोवे जीवोऽव्यक्ते तदात्मनि ॥ १,१४१.
Air merges into space, space into the sense of ego; ego into intellect, intellect into mind, mind into the vital self, and the vital self into the unmanifest, and then into the Supreme Self.
आत्मा परेश्वरो विष्णुरेको नारायणो नरः । अविनाश्यपरं सर्वं जगत्स्वर्गादि नाशि हि ॥ १,१४१.
The Self is the Supreme Lord, Viṣṇu, the one Nārāyaṇa, the Person; all else, including the worlds and heavens, is perishable, but he is imperishable and supreme.
नृपादयो गता नाशमतः पापं विवर्जयेत् । धर्मं कुर्यात्स्थिरं येन पापं हित्वा हरिं व्रजेत् ॥ १,१४१.
Since kings and others have met their end, one should avoid sin; by steadfastly practicing righteousness, forsaking sin, one attains Hari.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १४२ ब्रह्मोवाच । विंशादीन्पालयामास ह्यवतीर्णो हरिः प्रभुः । दैत्यधर्मस्य नाशार्थं वेदधर्मादिगुप्तये ॥ १,१४२.
Brahmā said: The Lord Hari himself descended and protected the Manus and others, for the destruction of demonic conduct and the preservation of Vedic law and its branches.
मत्स्यादिकस्वरूपेण त्ववतारं करोत्यजः । मत्स्यो भूत्वा हयग्रीवं दैत्यं हत्वाजिकण्टकम् ॥ १,१४२.
Assuming the forms beginning with the Fish, the unborn one makes his descents; becoming a Fish, he slew the demon Hayagrīva, the thorn among horses.
वेदानानीय मन्वादीन्पालयामास केशवः । मन्दरं धारयामास कूर्मो भूत्वा हिताय च ॥ १,१४२.
Having brought back the Vedas, Keśava protected the Manus and others; becoming a Tortoise, he supported Mount Mandara for their benefit.
क्षीरोदमथने वै द्यो देवो धन्वन्तरिर्ह्यर्भूत् । बिभ्रत्कमण्डलुं पूर्णममृतेन समुत्थितः ॥ १,१४२.
In the churning of the ocean of milk, the god Dhanvantari appeared, holding a full water-pot, and arose with the nectar.
आयुर्वेदमथाष्टाङ्गं सुश्रुताय स उक्तवान् । अमृतं पाययामास स्त्रीरूपी च सुरान्हरिः ॥ १,१४२.
He taught the eightfold science of Ayurveda to Suśruta; and Hari, taking the form of a woman, gave the nectar to the gods.
अवतीर्णो वराहोऽथ हिरण्याक्षं जघान ह । पृथिवीं धारयामास पालयामास देवताः ॥ १,१४२.
Then, descending as the Boar, he slew Hiraṇyākṣa; he upheld the earth and protected the gods.
नरसिंहोऽवर्तोर्णोऽथ हिरण्यकशिपुंरिपुम् । दैत्यान्निहतवान्वेदधर्मादीनभ्यपालयत् ॥ १,१४२.
Then Narasiṃha, the man-lion, appeared and slew Hiraṇyakaśipu, the enemy; having destroyed the daityas, he protected the Vedas, dharma, and others.
ततः परशुरामोऽभूज्जमदग्नेर्जगत्प्रभुः । त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं चक्रे निः क्षत्त्रियां हरिः ॥ १,१४२.
After that, Paraśurāma, the lord of the world, was born from Jamadagni; Hari made the earth devoid of kṣatriyas twenty-one times.
कार्तवीर्यं जघानाजौ कश्यपाय महीं ददौ । यागं कृत्वा महाबाहुर्महेन्द्रे पर्वते स्थितः ॥ १,१४२.
He slew Kārtavīrya in battle and gave the earth to Kaśyapa; after performing a sacrifice, the mighty-armed one dwelt on Mount Mahendra.
ततो रामो भविष्णुश्च चतुर्धा दुष्टर्मदनः । पुत्रो दशरथाज्जज्ञे रामश्च भरतोऽनुजः ॥ १,१४२.
Then Rāma, the destroyer of the wicked, was to become manifest in fourfold form; born as the son of Daśaratha, Rāma, with Bharata as his younger brother.
लक्ष्मणश्चाथ शत्रुघ्नो रामभार्या च जानकी । रामश्च पितृसत्यार्थं मातृभ्यो हितमाचरन् ॥ १,१४२.
Lakṣmaṇa and then Śatrughna, and Jānakī, the wife of Rāma; and Rāma, for the sake of his father's promise, acted for the good of his mothers.
शृङ्गवेरं चित्रकूटं दण्डकारण्यमागतः । नासां शूर्पणखायाश्च च्छित्त्वाथ खरदूषणम् ॥ १,१४२.
He came to Śṛṅgavera, Citrakūṭa, and the Daṇḍaka forest; then, cutting off the nose of Śūrpaṇakhā, he slew Khara and Dūṣaṇa.
हत्वा स राक्षसं सीतापहारिरजनीचरम् । रावणं चानुजं तस्य लङ्कापुर्यां विभीषणम् ॥ १,१४२.
Having slain the night-wandering demon who abducted Sītā, Rāvaṇa, and his brother in Laṅkā city, he established Vibhīṣaṇa.
रक्षोराज्ये च संस्थाप्य सुग्रीवनुमन्मुखैः । आरुह्य पुष्पकं सार्धं सीतया पतिभक्तया ॥ १,१४२.
Having installed Vibhīṣaṇa in the kingdom of the rākṣasas, with Sugrīva and Hanumān at his side, he ascended the Puṣpaka chariot together with Sītā, devoted to her husband.
लक्ष्मणेनानुकूलेन ह्ययोध्यां स्वपुरीं गतः । राज्यं चकार देवादीन्पालयामास स प्रजाः ॥ १,१४२.
With Lakṣmaṇa, who was favorable, he went to Ayodhyā, his own city; he ruled the kingdom and protected the people, along with the gods and others.
धर्मसंरक्षणं चक्रे ह्यश्वमेधादिकान्क्रतून् । सा महीपतिना रेमे रामेणैव यथासुखम् ॥ १,१४२.
He maintained the protection of dharma and performed sacrifices such as the aśvamedha; that earth rejoiced under the rule of Rāma, the king, as she wished.
रावणस्य गृहे सीता स्थिता भेजे न रावणम् । कर्मणा मनसा वाचा सा गता राघवं सदा ॥ १,१४२.
Sītā, though dwelling in the house of Rāvaṇa, did not turn to him; by deed, mind, and speech, she was always devoted to Rāghava.
पतिव्रता तु सा सीता ह्यनसूया यथैव तु । पतिव्रताया माहात्म्यं शृणु त्वं कथयाम्यहम् ॥ १,१४२.
That Sītā was truly devoted to her husband, just as Anasūyā was; now listen, I will tell you the greatness of a devoted wife.
कौशिको ब्राह्मणः कुष्ठी प्रतिष्ठानेऽभवत्पुरा । तं तथा व्याधितं भार्या पतिं देवमिवार्चयत् ॥ १,१४२.
Once, in the city of Pratiṣṭhāna, there was a brāhmaṇa named Kauśika, afflicted with leprosy; his wife worshipped her husband as if he were a god, even in that condition.
निर्भर्त्सितापि भर्तारं तममन्यत दैवतम् । भर्त्रोक्ता सानयद्वेश्यां शुल्कमादाय चाधिकम् ॥ १,१४२.
Even when reproached, she regarded her husband as a deity; at his command, she took a hated woman and brought back extra payment.
पथि सूले तदा प्रोतमचौरं चौरशङ्कया । माण्डव्यमतिदुः खार्तमन्धकारेऽथ स द्विजः ॥ १,१४२.
On the road, there was a thief impaled on a stake, suspected of theft; Māṇḍavya, greatly afflicted, was there in the darkness, and that brāhmaṇa too.
पत्नीस्कन्धसमारूढश्चालयामास कौशिकः । पादावमर्शणत्क्रुद्धो माण्डव्यस्तमुवाच ह ॥ १,१४२.
Kauśika, carrying his wife on his shoulder, brushed against Māṇḍavya's feet; Māṇḍavya, angered by the touch, spoke to him.
सूर्योदये मृतिस्तस्य येनाहं चालितः पदा । तच्छ्रुत्वा प्राह तद्भार्या सूर्यो नोदयमेष्यति ॥ १,१४२.
He said, 'At sunrise, you shall die, for you have disturbed me with your foot.' Hearing this, his wife replied, 'The sun will not rise.'
ततः सूर्योदयाभावाद भवत्सततं निशा । बहून्यब्दप्रमाणानि ततो देवा भयं ययुः ॥ १,१४२.
Then, because the sun did not rise, night continued endlessly for many years; therefore, the gods became afraid.
