(इत्यशोकाष्टमीव्रतम्) । ब्रह्मोवाच । शुक्लाष्टम्यामाश्वयुजे उत्तराषाढया युता । सा महानवमीत्युक्ता स्नानदानादि चाक्षयम् ॥ १,१३३.
Thus is the aśokāṣṭamī vow. Brahmā said: On the bright eighth day in the month of Āśvayuja, joined with the star Uttarāṣāḍhā, that is called the great Navamī; bathing, giving gifts, and so on, are inexhaustible in merit.
नवमी केवला चापि दुर्गां चैव तु पूजयेत् । महाव्रतं महापुण्यं शङ्कराद्यैरनुष्ठितम् ॥ १,१३३.
On the pure Navamī, one should worship Durgā; this is a great vow, of great merit, practiced by Śaṅkara and others.
अयाचितादि षष्ठ्यादौ राजा शत्रुजयाया च । जपहोमसमायुक्तः कन्यां वा भोजयेत्सदा ॥ १,१३३.
Beginning from the sixth day, without asking, and for the king's victory over enemies, one should always feed a maiden, accompanied by recitation and fire offerings.
दुर्गेदुर्गे रक्षिणि स्वाहा मन्त्रोऽयं पूजनादिषु । दीर्घाकारादिमात्राभिर्नव देव्यो नमोऽन्तिकाः ॥ १,१३३.
In worship and related rites, the mantra is: 'O Durgā, O Durgā, O Protectress, svāhā.' The nine goddesses are to be honored with elongated syllables, ending with 'obeisance.'
षड्भिः पदैर्नमः स्वाहा वषडादिहृदादिकम् । अङ्गुष्ठादिकनिष्ठान्तं न्यस्य वै पृजयेच्छिवाम् ॥ १,१३३.
With six words—'obeisance, svāhā, vaṣaṭ,' and so on, beginning with the heart and ending with the little finger—one should perform the ritual for Śivā.
अष्टम्यां नव गेहानि दारुजान्येकमेव वा । तस्मिन्देवी प्रकर्तव्या हैमी वाराजतापि वा ॥ १,१३३.
On the eighth day, one should make nine wooden houses, or even just one; in that, the goddess should be installed, whether made of gold or silver.
शूले खङ्गे पुस्तके वा पटे वा मण्डले (पे) यजेत् । कपालं खेटकं घण्टां दर्पणं तर्जनीं धनः ॥ १,१३३.
One should worship her on a spear, sword, book, cloth, or diagram; with a skull, shield, bell, mirror, forefinger, or wealth.
ध्वजं डमरुकं पाशं वामहस्तेषु बिभ्रती । शक्तिं च मुद्गरं शूलं वज्रं खङ्गं तथाङ्कुशम् ॥ १,१३३.
Bearing a banner, drum, noose in her left hands; and a spear, mallet, trident, thunderbolt, sword, and goad.
शरं चक्रं शलाकां च दुर्गामायुधसंयुताम् । शेषाः षोडशहस्तां स्युरञ्जनं डमरुं विना ॥ १,१३३.
With arrow, discus, and rod, Durgā is adorned with weapons; the remaining forms have sixteen arms, except for the collyrium and drum.
रुद्रचण्डा प्रचण्डा च चण्डोग्रा चण्डनायिका । चण्डा चण्डवती चैव चण्डरूपातिचण्डिका ॥ १,१३३.
Rudracaṇḍā, Pracaṇḍā, Caṇḍogrā, Caṇḍanāyikā, Caṇḍā, Caṇḍavatī, and Caṇḍarūpā, the exceedingly fierce Caṇḍikā.
नवमी चोग्रचण्डा च मध्यमाग्निप्रभाकृतिः । रोचना त्वरुणा कृष्णा नीलं धूम्रा च शुक्रका ॥ १,१३३.
The ninth is fierce and intense, resembling the radiance of a middling fire; it is yellow, swift, dark, blue, smoky, and shining.
पाता च पाण्डुरा प्रोक्ता आलीढं हरितं तथा । म (मा) हिषोऽस्य स खड्गाग्रप्रकचग्रहमुष्टिकः ॥ १,१३३.
It is tawny and pale, as declared; it is pressed and green as well. Its name is 'mahiṣa'; its form is that of a sword's tip, with a protruding jaw and clenched fist.
जप्त्वा दशाक्षरीं विद्यां नासौ केनापि बध्यते । पञ्च (ञ्चा) दशाङ्गुलं खड्गं त्रिशूलं च ततो यजेत् । लिङ्गस्यां पूजयेद्वापि पादुकेऽथ जलेऽपि वा ॥ १,१३३.
Having recited the ten-syllable mantra, he is not bound by anyone; then, with a sword five or fifteen fingers in length, or with a trident, he should perform the sacrifice; or he may worship the emblem, the sandals, or even in water.
विचित्रां रक्षयेत्पूजामष्टम्यामुपवासयेत् । पञ्चाब्दं महिषं बस्तं रात्रिशेषे च घातयेत् ॥ १,१३३.
He should protect the diverse worship, and fast on the eighth day; for five years, he should offer a buffalo or a goat, and slay it at the end of the night.
विधिवत्कालिकालीति तदुत्थरुधिरादिकम् । नेरृत्यां पूतनां चैव वायव्यां पापराक्षसीम् ॥ १,१३३.
According to the prescribed rite, the blood and other products arising from Kali should be offered; in the southwest, to Pūtanā, and in the northwest, to the evil Rākṣasī.
दद्याच्चरक्यै चैशान्यामाग्नेय्यां च विदारिकाम् ॥ १,१३३.
He should give to Carakī in the northeast, and to Vidārikā in the southeast.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १३४ ब्रह्मोवाच । महाकौशिकमन्त्रश्च कथ्यतेऽत्र महाफलः ॥ १,१३४.
Brahma said: The great Kauśika mantra is described here, which yields great fruit.
(महाकौशिकमन्त्रः)ओं महाकौशिकाय नमः । ओं हूं हूं प्रस्फुर लल लल कुल्व कुल्व चुल्व चुल्व खल्ल खल्ल मुल्व मुल्व गुल्व गुल्व तुल्व पुल्ल पुल्ल धल्व धुल्व धुम धुम धमधम मारय मारय धकधक वज्ञापयज्ञापय विदारयविदारय कम्पकम्प कम्पयकम्पय पूरयपूरय आवेशयावेशय ओं ह्रीं ओं ह्रीं हं वं वं हुं तटतट मदमद ह्रीं ओं हूं नैरृताया नमः निरृतये दातव्यम् । महाकौशिकमन्त्रेण मन्त्रितं बलिमर्पयेत् ॥ १,१३४.
Om, obeisance to Mahākauśikā! Om hūṃ hūṃ, shine forth, lala lala, kulva kulva, culva culva, khalla khalla, mulva mulva, gulva gulva, tulva pulla pulla, dhalva dhulva, dhuma dhuma, dhamadhama, slay, slay, burn, burn, command, command, tear, tear, tremble, tremble, shake, shake, fill, fill, possess, possess, om hrīṃ om hrīṃ haṃ vaṃ vaṃ huṃ taṭataṭa madamada hrīṃ om hūṃ, obeisance to Nairṛtā! This should be given to Nirṛti. With the Mahākauśika mantra, the offering should be consecrated.
तस्याग्रतो नृपः स्नायाच्छत्रं कृत्वा च पैष्टिकम् । खड्गेन घातयित्वा तु दद्यात्स्कन्दविशाखयोः ॥ १,१३४.
In front of her, the king should bathe, set up a parasol, and prepare the sacrificial cake; after slaying with a sword, he should offer it to Skanda and Viśākha.
मातॄणां चैव देवीनां पूजा कार्या तथा निशि । ब्रह्माणी चैव माहेशी कौमारी वैष्णवी तथा ॥ १,१३४.
The worship of the Mothers and goddesses should also be performed at night: Brahmāṇī, Māheśī, Kaumārī, Vaiṣṇavī as well.
वाराही चैव माहेन्द्री चामुण्डा चण्डिका तथा । जयन्ती मङ्गला काली भद्रकाली कपालिनी ॥ १,१३४.
Also Vārāhī, Māhendrī, Cāmuṇḍā, Caṇḍikā, Jayantī, Maṅgalā, Kālī, Bhadrakālī, Kapālinī.
दुर्गा क्षमा शिवा धात्री स्वाहा स्वधा नमोऽस्तु ते । क्षीराद्यैः स्नापयेद्देवीं कन्यकाः प्रमदास्तथा ॥ १,१३४.
Durgā, Kṣamā, Śivā, Dhātrī, Svāhā, Svadhā, salutations to you! The goddess should be bathed with milk and other substances by maidens and women.
द्विजाती (दी) नथ पाषण्डानन्नदानेन पूजयेत् । ध्वजपत्रपताकाद्यै रथयात्रासु वस्त्रकैः । महानवम्यां पूजेयं जयराज्यादिदायिका ॥ १,१३४.
He should worship the twice-born and heretics by giving food; with banners, leaves, and flags, and with garments during chariot processions. On the great Navamī, this worship is performed, which grants victory, sovereignty, and other gifts.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १३५ ब्रह्मोवाच । नवम्यामाश्विने शुक्ले एकभक्तेन पूजयेत् । देवीं विप्रंल्लक्षमेकञ्जपेद्वीरं व्रती नरः ॥ १,१३५.
Brahma said: On the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Āśvina, one should worship with a single meal; the devotee should recite the mantra one hundred thousand times for the goddess and the brāhmaṇa.
(ति वीरनवमीव्रतम्) । ब्रह्मोवाच । चैत्रे शुक्लनवम्यां च देवीं दमनकैर्यजेत् । आयुरारोग्यसौभाग्यं शत्रुभिश्चापराजितः ॥ १,१३५.
Brahma said: On the ninth day of the bright fortnight in Caitra, one should worship the goddess with dāmanaka flowers; one attains longevity, health, prosperity, and is unconquered by enemies.
(इति दमनकनवमीव्रतम्) । ब्रह्मोवाच । दशम्यामेकभक्ताशी समान्ते दशधेनुदः । दिशश्च काञ्चनीर्दत्त्वा ब्रह्माण्डाधिपतिर्भवेत् ॥ १,१३५.
Brahma said: On the tenth day, eating only once, at the end, one should give ten cows; after giving gold in all directions, one becomes lord of the universe.
(इति दिग्दशमीव्रतम्) ब्रह्मोवाच । एकादश्यामृषिपूजा कार्या सर्वोपकारिका । धनवान्पुत्रवांश्चान्ते ऋषिलोके महीयते ॥ १,१३५.
Brahma said: On the eleventh day, the worship of the sages should be performed, which benefits all; at the end, the wealthy and those with sons are honored in the world of the sages.
मरीचिरत्र्यं गिरसौ पुलसत्यः पुलहः क्रतुः । प्रचेताश्च वसिष्ठश्च भृगुर्नारद एव च ॥ १,१३५.
Marīci, Atri, Giri, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Pracetas, Vasiṣṭha, Bhṛgu, and Nārada as well.
चैत्रादौ कारयेत्पूजां माल्यैश्च दमनोद्भवैः । अशोकाख्याष्टमीप्रोक्ता वीराख्या नवमीतथा ॥ १,१३५.
At the beginning of Caitra, one should perform worship with garlands made from damana flowers; the eighth day is called Aśoka, and the ninth is known as Vīra.
दमनाख्या दिग्दशमी नवम्येकादशी तथा ॥ १,१३५.
The tenth day is called Damana, and likewise the ninth and eleventh days are designated as such.
