योगाय योगपतये योगेश्वराय योगसम्भवाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः । (स्नानमन्त्रः) यज्ञाय यज्ञेश्वराय यज्ञपतये गोविन्दाय नमोनमः ॥ १,१३१.
Salutations again and again to Govinda, the embodiment of yoga, the lord of yoga, the master of yogis, and the source of yoga. (Bathing mantra:) Salutations again and again to Govinda, the embodiment of sacrifice, the lord of sacrifice, and the master of sacrifices.
(अर्चनम०)विश्वाय विश्वेश्वराय विश्वपतये गोविन्दाय नमोनमः । (शयन०)सर्वाय सर्वेश्वराय सर्वेताय सर्वसम्भवाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः ॥ १,१३१.
(Worship mantra:) Salutations again and again to Govinda, the all-pervading, the lord of the universe, and the master of the universe. (Resting mantra:) Salutations again and again to Govinda, who is all, the lord of all, the protector of all, and the source of all.
स्थण्डिले पूजयेद्देवं सचन्द्रां रोहिणीं तथा । शङ्खे तोयं समादाय सपुष्पफलचन्दनम् ॥ १,१३१.
On a raised altar, one should worship the deity, the Moon along with Rohiṇī, and, taking water in a conch with flowers, fruits, and sandalwood, offer it.
जानुभ्यामवनीं गत्वा चन्द्रायार्घ्यं निवेदयेत् । क्षीरोदार्णवसंभूत ! अत्रिनेत्रसमुद्भव ! ॥ १,१३१.
Approaching the ground on one's knees, one should present arghya to the Moon, saying: 'O one born from the ocean of milk! O one arisen from the eye of Atri!'
गृहाणार्घ्यं शशाङ्केश (मं) रोहिण्या सहितो मम । श्रियै च वसुदेवाय नन्दाय च बलाय च ॥ १,१३१.
'O lord of the Moon, together with Rohiṇī, accept this arghya from me; for Śrī, for Vasudeva, for Nanda, and for Balarāma.'
यशोदायै ततो दद्यादर्घ्यं फलसमन्वितम् । अनन्तं (घं) वामनं शौरिं वैकुष्ठं पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥ १,१३१.
Then one should offer arghya, accompanied by fruits, to Yaśodā, to Ananta, Vāmana, Śauri, Vaikuṇṭha, and Puruṣottama.
वासुदेवं हृषीकेशं माधवं मधुसूदनम् । वराहं पुण्डरीकाक्षं नृसिंहं दैत्यसूदनम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Vāsudeva, Hṛṣīkeśa, Mādhava, Madhusūdana, Varāha, Puṇḍarīkākṣa, Nṛsiṃha, and the slayer of the Daityas.
दामोदरं पद्मनाभं केशवं गारुडध्वजम् । गोविन्दमच्युतं देवमनन्तम पराजितम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Dāmodara, Padmanābha, Keśava, the one with Garuḍa on his banner, Govinda, Acyuta, the god, the infinite, the unconquered.
अधोक्षजं जगद्वीजं सर्गस्थित्यन्तकारणम् । अनादिनिधनं विष्णुं त्रिलोकेशं त्रिविक्रमम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Adhokṣaja, the seed of the universe, the cause of creation, preservation, and destruction, to Viṣṇu, without beginning or end, lord of the three worlds, Trivikrama.
नारायणं चतुर्बाहुं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् । पीतम्बरधरं दिव्यं वनमालाविभूषितम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Nārāyaṇa, four-armed, bearing conch, discus, and mace, clad in yellow garments, adorned with a divine forest garland.
श्रीवत्साङ्कं जगद्धाम श्रीपतिं श्रीधरं हरिम् । यं देवं देवकी देवी वसुदेवादजीजनत् ॥ १,१३१.
To the one marked with Śrīvatsa, the abode of the universe, the lord of Śrī, the bearer of fortune, Hari, whom Devakī, the goddess, bore from Vasudeva.
भौमस्य ब्रह्मणो गुप्त्यै तस्मै ब्रह्मात्मने नमः । नामान्येतानि संकीर्त्य गत्यर्थं प्रार्थयेत्पुनः ॥ १,१३१.
For the protection of the earth and of Brahmā, to him who is the soul of Brahman, salutations. Reciting these names, one should again pray for deliverance.
त्राहि मां देवदेवेश ! हरे ! संसारसागरात् । त्राहि मां सर्वपापघ्न ! दुःखशोकार्णवात्प्रभो ! ॥ १,१३१.
'Rescue me, O lord of gods, O Hari, from the ocean of worldly existence! Rescue me, O destroyer of all sins, O master, from the ocean of suffering and sorrow!'
देवकीनन्दन ! श्रीश ! हरे ! संसारसागरात् । दुर्वृत्तांस्त्रायसे विष्णो ! ये स्मरन्ति सकृत्सकृत् ॥ १,१३१.
'O son of Devakī, lord of Śrī, O Hari, from the ocean of worldly existence! O Viṣṇu, you protect the wicked, those who remember you even once and again.'
सोऽहं देवातिदुर्वृत्तस्त्राहि मां शोकसागरात् । पुष्कराक्ष ! निमग्नोऽहं मह्तयज्ञानसागरे ॥ १,१३१.
I am one whose conduct is worse than the gods; save me from the ocean of sorrow, O lotus-eyed one! I am submerged in the vast sea of sacrifice and knowledge.
त्राहि मां देवदेवेश ! त्वामृतेऽन्यो न रक्षिता । स्वजन्म वासुदेवाप गोब्राह्मणहिताय च ॥ १,१३१.
Save me, O Lord of gods and Lord of lords! There is no protector besides you. My birth, O son of Vasudeva, is for the welfare of cows and Brahmins.
जगद्धिताय कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः । शान्तिरस्तु शिवं चास्तु धनविख्यातिराज्यभाक् ॥ १,१३१.
For the welfare of the world, I bow again and again to Krishna, to Govinda. May there be peace, may there be auspiciousness, and may fame and sovereignty be attained.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १३२ ब्रह्मोवाच । नक्ताशी त्वष्टमीं यावद्वर्षान्ते चैव धेनुदः । पौरन्दरपदं याति सद्गतिव्रतमुच्यते ! ॥ १,१३२.
Brahma said: Whoever observes fasting from food on the eighth day until the end of the year and gives a cow, attains the status of Indra; this is called the vow of good destiny.
शुक्लाष्टभ्यां पौषमासे महारुद्रेति साधु वै । मत्प्रीतये कृतं देवि शथसाहस्रिकं फलम् ॥ १,१३२.
On the eighth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Pausha, it is rightly called the great Rudra. Performed for my pleasure, O goddess, its fruit is a thousandfold.
अष्टमी बुधवारेण पक्षयोरुभयोर्यदा । भविष्यति तदा तस्यां व्रतमेतत्कथा परा ॥ १,१३२.
Whenever the eighth day falls on a Wednesday in either fortnight, then, on that day, this vow and its story should be observed.
तस्यां नियमकर्तारो न स्युः खण्डितसम्पदः । तण्डुलस्याष्टमुष्टीनां वर्जयित्वाङ्गुलिद्वयम् ॥ १,१३२.
Those who observe discipline on that day will not have diminished wealth. Leaving aside two fingers' worth, eight handfuls of rice should be used.
भक्तं सद्भक्तिश्रद्धाभ्यां मुक्तिकामी हि मानवः । आम्र पत्रपुटे कृत्वा यो भुड्क्ते कुशवोष्टिते ॥ १,१३२.
A person desiring liberation should eat food with true devotion and faith, placing it on a mango leaf and eating it with kusa grass.
कलम्बिकाम्लिकोपेतं काम्यं तस्य फलं भवे (लभे) त् । बुधं पञ्चोपचारेण पूजयित्वा जलाशये ॥ १,१३२.
Mixed with sour kalambika, the desired fruit is obtained. After worshipping Budha with five offerings at a water place,
शक्तितो दक्षिणं दद्यात्कर्करीं तण्डुलान्विताम् । बुं बुधायेति बीजं स्यात्स्वाहान्तः कमलादिकः ॥ १,१३२.
One should give, as able, a gourd with rice as a donation. The seed mantra for Budha is 'buṃ budhāya', ending with 'svāhā', along with lotus and other items.
बाणचापधरंश्यामं दले चाङ्गनि मध्यतः । बुधाष्टमीकथा पुण्या श्रोतव्या कृतिभिर्ध्रुवम् ॥ १,१३२.
Dark-complexioned, holding bow and arrow, in the middle of the leaf and limbs. The story of Budha's eighth day is virtuous and should certainly be heard by the wise.
पुरे पाटलिपुत्राख्ये वीरो नाम द्विजोत्तमः । रम्भा भार्या तस्य चासीत्कौशिकः पुत्र उत्तमः ॥ १,१३२.
In the city called Pataliputra, there was a noble Brahmin named Vira. His wife was Rambha, and their excellent son was Kaushika.
दुहिता विजयानाम्नी व (ध) नपालो वृषोऽभवत् । गृहीत्वा कौशिकस्तं च ग्रीष्मे गङ्गां गतोऽरमत् ॥ १,१३२.
Their daughter was named Vijaya, and the cowherd was Vrisha. Kaushika took him and, in summer, went to the Ganges and enjoyed himself.
गोपालकैर्वृषश्चौरैः क्रीडास्थोपहृतो बलात् । गङ्गातः स च उत्थाय वनं बभ्राम दुः खितः ॥ १,१३२.
Vrisha was seized by cowherds and thieves during play, by force. Rising from the Ganges, he wandered in the forest, distressed.
जलार्थं विजया चागाद्भ्रा(न्मा) त्रा सार्धं च साप्यगात् । पिपासितो मृणालार्थो आगतोऽथ सरोवरम् ॥ १,१३२.
Vijaya went for water, and her brother also went with her. Thirsty and seeking lotus stalks, he arrived at the lake.
दिव्यस्त्रीणां च पूजादीन्दृष्ट्वा चाप्यथ विस्मितः । स ता गत्वा ययाचेऽन्नं सानुजोऽहं बुभुक्षितः ॥ १,१३२.
Seeing the worship and other rites of divine women, he was amazed. He approached them and begged for food, saying, 'I am hungry, along with my brother.'
