अष्टम्यां पारणं कुर्यान्मरीचं प्राश्य स्वर्गभाक् सप्तम्यां नियतः स्नात्वा पूजयित्वा दिवाकरम् ॥ १,१३०.
On the eighth day, one should break the fast, having eaten marīca, and thus attains heaven; on the seventh, after bathing with discipline and worshipping the Sun—
दद्यात्फलानि विप्रेभ्यो मार्तण्डः प्रीयतामिति । खर्जूरं नारिकेलं वा प्राशयेन्मातुलुङ्गकम् ॥ १,१३०.
One should give fruits to the brāhmaṇas, saying, 'May Mārtaṇḍa be pleased'; one may eat dates, coconut, or citron.
सर्वे भवन्तु सफला मम कामाः समन्ततः । (इति फलसप्तमी) संपूज्य देवं सप्तम्यां पायसेनाथ भोजयेत् ॥ १,१३०.
May all my desires everywhere be fruitful; (thus is the Phala-saptamī). Having worshipped the deity on the seventh day, one should then feed with rice pudding.
विप्रांश्च दक्षिणां दत्त्वा स्वयं चाथ पयः पिबेत् । भक्ष्यं चोष्यं तथा लेह्यं ओदनं चेति कीर्तितम् ॥ १,१३०.
Having given gifts to the brāhmaṇas, one should then drink milk oneself; foods to be eaten, sucked, licked, and rice are mentioned.
धनपुत्रादिकामस्तु त्यजेदेतदनोदनः वाय्वाशी विजयेत्क्षुच्च कुर्याद्विजयसप्तमीम् । अद्यादर्कं च कामेच्छुरुपवासे तरेन्मदम् ॥ १,१३०.
One should renounce desires for wealth, sons, and the like, and avoid rice; one who eats only air conquers hunger and should observe Vijaya-saptamī; if desiring, one may eat arka on the fast day, subduing pride.
गोधूममाषयवषष्टिककांस्यपात्रं पाषाणपिष्टमधुमैषुनमद्यमांसम् । अभ्यञ्जनाञ्जनतिलांश्च विवर्जयेद्यः तस्येषितं भवति सप्तसु सप्तमीषु ॥ १,१३०.
One should avoid wheat, black gram, barley, rice, bronze vessels, stone-ground flour, honey, meat, wine, ointments, collyrium, and sesame; for him, whatever is desired is obtained on the seven Saptamīs.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १३१ ब्रह्मोवाच । ब्रह्मन् भाद्रपदे मासि शुक्लाष्टम्यामुपोषितः । दूर्वां सौरीं गणेशं च फलपुष्पैः शिवं यजेत् ॥ १,१३१.
Brahmā said: O Brāhmaṇa, in the month of Bhādrapada, on the bright eighth day, having observed a fast, one should worship Dūrvā grass, the Sun, and Gaṇeśa, and offer fruits and flowers to Śiva.
फलव्रीह्यादिभिः सर्वैः शम्भवेनमः शिवाय च । त्वं दूर्वेऽमृतजन्मासि ह्यष्टमी सर्वकामभाक् ॥ १,१३१.
With all kinds of fruits, rice, and other offerings, one should honor Śambhu, saying: 'Salutations to Śiva! You, O Dūrvā, are born of nectar; the eighth day grants all desires.'
अनग्निपक्वमश्नीयान्मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया । (इति दूर्वाष्टमीव्रतम्) । कृष्णाष्टम्यां च रोहिण्यामर्धरात्रेऽर्चनं हरेः ॥ १,१३१.
One should eat food not cooked by fire, and thus is freed from the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa. (Thus is the Dūrvāṣṭamī vow.) On the Kṛṣṇa Aṣṭamī, under the Rohiṇī star, at midnight, one should worship Hari.
कार्या विद्धापि सप्तम्या हन्ति पापं त्रिजन्मनः । उपोषितोऽर्चयेन्मन्त्रैस्तिथि भान्ते च पारणम् ॥ १,१३१.
Even if the day is joined with the seventh, this observance destroys the sins of three births. Having fasted, one should worship with mantras, and break the fast when the lunar day is visible.
योगाय योगपतये योगेश्वराय योगसम्भवाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः । (स्नानमन्त्रः) यज्ञाय यज्ञेश्वराय यज्ञपतये गोविन्दाय नमोनमः ॥ १,१३१.
Salutations again and again to Govinda, the embodiment of yoga, the lord of yoga, the master of yogis, and the source of yoga. (Bathing mantra:) Salutations again and again to Govinda, the embodiment of sacrifice, the lord of sacrifice, and the master of sacrifices.
(अर्चनम०)विश्वाय विश्वेश्वराय विश्वपतये गोविन्दाय नमोनमः । (शयन०)सर्वाय सर्वेश्वराय सर्वेताय सर्वसम्भवाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः ॥ १,१३१.
(Worship mantra:) Salutations again and again to Govinda, the all-pervading, the lord of the universe, and the master of the universe. (Resting mantra:) Salutations again and again to Govinda, who is all, the lord of all, the protector of all, and the source of all.
स्थण्डिले पूजयेद्देवं सचन्द्रां रोहिणीं तथा । शङ्खे तोयं समादाय सपुष्पफलचन्दनम् ॥ १,१३१.
On a raised altar, one should worship the deity, the Moon along with Rohiṇī, and, taking water in a conch with flowers, fruits, and sandalwood, offer it.
जानुभ्यामवनीं गत्वा चन्द्रायार्घ्यं निवेदयेत् । क्षीरोदार्णवसंभूत ! अत्रिनेत्रसमुद्भव ! ॥ १,१३१.
Approaching the ground on one's knees, one should present arghya to the Moon, saying: 'O one born from the ocean of milk! O one arisen from the eye of Atri!'
गृहाणार्घ्यं शशाङ्केश (मं) रोहिण्या सहितो मम । श्रियै च वसुदेवाय नन्दाय च बलाय च ॥ १,१३१.
'O lord of the Moon, together with Rohiṇī, accept this arghya from me; for Śrī, for Vasudeva, for Nanda, and for Balarāma.'
यशोदायै ततो दद्यादर्घ्यं फलसमन्वितम् । अनन्तं (घं) वामनं शौरिं वैकुष्ठं पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥ १,१३१.
Then one should offer arghya, accompanied by fruits, to Yaśodā, to Ananta, Vāmana, Śauri, Vaikuṇṭha, and Puruṣottama.
वासुदेवं हृषीकेशं माधवं मधुसूदनम् । वराहं पुण्डरीकाक्षं नृसिंहं दैत्यसूदनम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Vāsudeva, Hṛṣīkeśa, Mādhava, Madhusūdana, Varāha, Puṇḍarīkākṣa, Nṛsiṃha, and the slayer of the Daityas.
दामोदरं पद्मनाभं केशवं गारुडध्वजम् । गोविन्दमच्युतं देवमनन्तम पराजितम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Dāmodara, Padmanābha, Keśava, the one with Garuḍa on his banner, Govinda, Acyuta, the god, the infinite, the unconquered.
अधोक्षजं जगद्वीजं सर्गस्थित्यन्तकारणम् । अनादिनिधनं विष्णुं त्रिलोकेशं त्रिविक्रमम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Adhokṣaja, the seed of the universe, the cause of creation, preservation, and destruction, to Viṣṇu, without beginning or end, lord of the three worlds, Trivikrama.
नारायणं चतुर्बाहुं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् । पीतम्बरधरं दिव्यं वनमालाविभूषितम् ॥ १,१३१.
To Nārāyaṇa, four-armed, bearing conch, discus, and mace, clad in yellow garments, adorned with a divine forest garland.
श्रीवत्साङ्कं जगद्धाम श्रीपतिं श्रीधरं हरिम् । यं देवं देवकी देवी वसुदेवादजीजनत् ॥ १,१३१.
To the one marked with Śrīvatsa, the abode of the universe, the lord of Śrī, the bearer of fortune, Hari, whom Devakī, the goddess, bore from Vasudeva.
भौमस्य ब्रह्मणो गुप्त्यै तस्मै ब्रह्मात्मने नमः । नामान्येतानि संकीर्त्य गत्यर्थं प्रार्थयेत्पुनः ॥ १,१३१.
For the protection of the earth and of Brahmā, to him who is the soul of Brahman, salutations. Reciting these names, one should again pray for deliverance.
त्राहि मां देवदेवेश ! हरे ! संसारसागरात् । त्राहि मां सर्वपापघ्न ! दुःखशोकार्णवात्प्रभो ! ॥ १,१३१.
'Rescue me, O lord of gods, O Hari, from the ocean of worldly existence! Rescue me, O destroyer of all sins, O master, from the ocean of suffering and sorrow!'
देवकीनन्दन ! श्रीश ! हरे ! संसारसागरात् । दुर्वृत्तांस्त्रायसे विष्णो ! ये स्मरन्ति सकृत्सकृत् ॥ १,१३१.
'O son of Devakī, lord of Śrī, O Hari, from the ocean of worldly existence! O Viṣṇu, you protect the wicked, those who remember you even once and again.'
सोऽहं देवातिदुर्वृत्तस्त्राहि मां शोकसागरात् । पुष्कराक्ष ! निमग्नोऽहं मह्तयज्ञानसागरे ॥ १,१३१.
I am one whose conduct is worse than the gods; save me from the ocean of sorrow, O lotus-eyed one! I am submerged in the vast sea of sacrifice and knowledge.
त्राहि मां देवदेवेश ! त्वामृतेऽन्यो न रक्षिता । स्वजन्म वासुदेवाप गोब्राह्मणहिताय च ॥ १,१३१.
Save me, O Lord of gods and Lord of lords! There is no protector besides you. My birth, O son of Vasudeva, is for the welfare of cows and Brahmins.
जगद्धिताय कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय नमोनमः । शान्तिरस्तु शिवं चास्तु धनविख्यातिराज्यभाक् ॥ १,१३१.
For the welfare of the world, I bow again and again to Krishna, to Govinda. May there be peace, may there be auspiciousness, and may fame and sovereignty be attained.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १३२ ब्रह्मोवाच । नक्ताशी त्वष्टमीं यावद्वर्षान्ते चैव धेनुदः । पौरन्दरपदं याति सद्गतिव्रतमुच्यते ! ॥ १,१३२.
Brahma said: Whoever observes fasting from food on the eighth day until the end of the year and gives a cow, attains the status of Indra; this is called the vow of good destiny.
शुक्लाष्टभ्यां पौषमासे महारुद्रेति साधु वै । मत्प्रीतये कृतं देवि शथसाहस्रिकं फलम् ॥ १,१३२.
On the eighth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Pausha, it is rightly called the great Rudra. Performed for my pleasure, O goddess, its fruit is a thousandfold.
अष्टमी बुधवारेण पक्षयोरुभयोर्यदा । भविष्यति तदा तस्यां व्रतमेतत्कथा परा ॥ १,१३२.
Whenever the eighth day falls on a Wednesday in either fortnight, then, on that day, this vow and its story should be observed.
