कांस्यं माषं मसूरं चचणकं कोरदूषकम् । शाकं मधु परान्नं च वर्जयेदुपवासवान् ॥ १,१२८.
Bronze vessels, black gram, lentils, chickpeas, millet, vegetables, honey, and other food should be avoided by one observing the fast.
पुष्पालङ्कारवस्त्राणि धूपगन्धानुलेपनम् । उपवासेन दुष्येत्तु दन्तधावनमञ्जनम् ॥ १,१२८.
Flowers, ornaments, garments, incense, fragrant ointments, as well as cleaning the teeth and applying collyrium, are spoiled by fasting.
दन्तकाष्ठं पञ्चगव्यं कृत्वा प्रातर्व्रतं चरेत् । असकृज्जलपानाच्च ताम्बूलस्य च भक्षणात् ॥ १,१२८.
One should use a toothstick made from five products of the cow and observe the morning vow; by repeatedly drinking water and eating betel, the vow is broken.
उपवासः प्रदुष्येत दिवास्वप्ना क्षमैथुनात् । क्षमा सत्यं दया दानं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः ॥ १,१२८.
Fasting is corrupted by sleeping during the day and sexual intercourse; patience, truthfulness, compassion, charity, purity, and control of the senses are prescribed.
देवपूजाग्निहवने सन्तोषोस्तेयमेव च । सर्वव्रतेष्वयं धर्मः सामान्यो दशधास्मृतः ॥ १,१२८.
Worship of deities, offering oblations into fire, contentment, and refraining from theft—these tenfold duties are regarded as common to all vows.
नक्षत्रदर्शनान्नक्तमनक्तं निशि भोजनम् । गोमूत्रं च पल दद्यादर्धाङ्गुष्ठं तु गोमयम् ॥ १,१२८.
Seeing the stars, eating at night or during the day, giving one pala of cow urine and half a thumb’s length of cow dung are prescribed.
क्षीरं सप्तपलं दद्याद्दध्नश्चैव पलत्रयम् । घृतमेकफलं दद्यात्पलमेकं कुशोदकम् ॥ १,१२८.
One should give seven palas of milk, three palas of curd, one pala of ghee, and one pala of water from kuśa grass.
गायत्त्र्या चैव गन्धेति आप्यायस्व दृ दधिग्रहः । तेजोऽसीति च देवस्य ब्रह्मकूर्चव्रतं चरेत् ॥ १,१२८.
With the recitation of the Gāyatrī and the Gandheti hymn, taking curd, and the invocation 'Tejo'si' to the deity, one should observe the Brahmakūrca vow.
अग्न्याधानं प्रतिष्ठां तु यज्ञदानव्रतानि च । वेदव्रतवृषोत्सर्गचूडाकरणमेखलाः ॥ १,१२८.
Establishing the sacred fire, consecration, sacrificial and charitable vows, Vedic vows, releasing the bull, the ceremony of shaving the head, and the sacred girdle are prescribed.
माङ्गल्यमभिषेकं च मलमासे विवर्जयत् । दर्शाद्दर्शस्य चान्द्रः स्यात्त्रिंशाहोभिस्तु सावनः ॥ १,१२८.
Auspicious rites and anointing should be avoided in the impure month; the lunar month from new moon to new moon consists of thirty days.
रविसंक्रमणात्सौरो नाक्षत्रः सप्तविंशतिः । सौरो मासो विवाहाय यज्ञादौ सावनस्थितिः ॥ १,१२८.
From the sun’s transit, the solar month is twenty-seven days, not based on the stars; the solar month is used for marriage and at the start of sacrifices, while the lunar month is for observances.
युग्माग्नियुगभूतानि षण्मुन्योर्वसुरन्ध्रयोः । रुद्रेण द्वादशी युक्ता चतुर्दश्याथ पूर्णिमा ॥ १,१२८.
The paired days associated with fire, the six sages, and the Vasu and Andhra days; the twelfth day joined with Rudra, the fourteenth, and the full moon are specified.
प्रतिपद्यप्यमावास्या तिथ्योर्मस्यं महाफलम् । एतद्व्यस्तं महाघोरं हन्ति पुण्यं पुरा कृतम् ॥ १,१२८.
The first day and the new moon, when they coincide, yield great results; this mixed occurrence is extremely inauspicious and destroys previously acquired merit.
प्रारब्धतपसा स्त्रीणां रजो हन्याद्व्रतं न हि । अन्यैर्दानादिकं कुर्यात्कायिकं स्वयमेव च ॥ १,१२८.
For women, menstrual blood interrupts the vow begun with austerity; other acts like charity may be performed, but bodily observances must be done personally.
क्रोधात्प्रमादाल्लोभाद्वा व्रतभङ्गो भवेद्यदि । दिनत्रयं न भुञ्जीत शिरसो मुण्डनं भवेत् ॥ १,१२८.
If the vow is broken due to anger, negligence, or greed, one should not eat for three days and must shave the head.
असामर्थ्ये शरीरस्य पुत्रादीन्कारयेद्व्रतम् । व्रतस्थं मूर्छितं विप्रं जलादीन्यनुपाययेत् ॥ १,१२८.
If the body is incapable, one should have sons or others perform the vow; if a Brahmin observing the vow faints, water and other remedies should be administered.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १२९ ब्रह्मोवाच । वक्ष्ये प्रतिपदादीनि व्रतानि व्यास शृण्वथ । वैश्वानरपदं याति शिखिव्रतमिदं स्मृतम् ॥ १,१२९.
The glorious Garuda Purana, chapter 129. Brahma spoke: I will explain the vows beginning from the first day; listen, Vyasa. The Śikhi vow is said to lead to the Vaiśvānarapada.
प्रतिपद्येकभक्ताशी समाप्ते कपिलाप्रदः । चैत्रादौ कारयेच्चैव ब्रह्मपूजां यथाविधि । गन्धपुष्पार्चनैर्दानैर्माल्याद्यैश्च मनोरमैः ॥ १,१२९.
On the first day, one eats only once and, at the end, gives a brown cow; beginning in the month of Chaitra, one should perform worship of Brahma with fragrant flowers, offerings, garlands, and delightful gifts.
सहोमैः पूजयेद्देवं सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् । कार्तिके त सितेऽष्टम्यां पुष्पहारी च वत्सरम् ॥ १,१२९.
With oblations, one should worship the deity and will attain all desires; in Kartika, on the bright eighth day, one should offer flowers for a year.
पुष्पादिदाता रूपेण रूपभागी भवेन्नरः । कृष्णपक्षे तृतीयायां श्रावणे श्रीधरं श्रिया ॥ १,१२९.
By giving flowers and other offerings, a person attains beauty; on the third day of the dark fortnight in Shravana, one should worship Śrīdhara with wealth.
यजेदशून्यशय्यायां फलं दद्याद्द्विजातये । शय्यां दत्त्वा प्रार्थयेच्च श्रीधराय नमः श्रियै ॥ १,१२९.
One should perform worship upon an empty bed, offer its fruit to a twice-born, and, after giving the bed, pray: 'Salutations to Śrīdhara, homage to Śrī.'
उमांशिवं हुताशं च तृतीयायां च पूजयेत् । हविष्यमन्न नैवेद्य देय दमनकं तथा ॥ १,१२९.
On the third day, one should worship Umā, Śiva, and Agni; offerings of cooked food and damanaka should be given as naivedya.
चैत्रादौ फलमाप्नोति उमया मे प्रभाषितम् । फाल्गुनादितृतीयायां लवणं यस्तु वर्जयेत् ॥ १,१२९.
At the beginning of Caitra, one attains the fruit spoken by Umā; whoever avoids salt on the third day from Phālguna onward—
समाप्ते शयनं दद्याद्गृहं चोपस्करान्वितम् । संपूज्य विप्रमिथनं भवानी प्रीयतामिति ॥ १,१२९.
At the conclusion, one should give a bed and a house furnished with utensils, honoring the Brahmin couple, saying: 'May Bhavānī be pleased.'
गौरीलोके वसेन्नित्यं सौभाग्यकरमुत्तमम् । गौरी काली उमा भद्रा दुर्गा कान्तिः सरस्वती ॥ १,१२९.
One dwells eternally in the realm of Gaurī, attaining supreme auspiciousness; Gaurī, Kālī, Umā, Bhadrā, Durgā, Kānti, Sarasvatī—
मङ्गला वैष्णवी लक्ष्मीः शिवा नारायणी क्रमात् । मार्गेतृतीयामारभ्य अवियोगादिमाप्नुयात् ॥ १,१२९.
Maṅgalā, Vaiṣṇavī, Lakṣmī, Śivā, Nārāyaṇī, in order; beginning from the third day of the lunar path, one attains freedom from separation and other blessings.
चतुर्थ्यां सितमाघादौ निराहारो व्रतान्वितः । दत्त्वा तिलांस्तु विप्राय स्वयं भुङ्क्ते तिलोदकम् ॥ १,१२९.
On the fourth day, at the start of the bright Māgha, fasting and observing vows, after giving sesame seeds to a Brahmin, one partakes of sesame water oneself.
वर्षद्वये समाप्तिश्च निर्विघ्नादिं समाप्नुयात् । गः स्वाहा मूलमन्त्रोऽयं प्रणवेन समन्वितः ॥ १,१२९.
Completion occurs in two years, and one attains uninterrupted fulfillment; 'gaḥ svāhā' is the root mantra, accompanied by the praṇava.
ग्लैं ग्लांहृदये गां गीं हूं ह्रीं ह्रीं शिरः शिखा । गूं वर्म गों च गैं नेत्रं गों च आवाहनादिषु ॥ १,१२९.
'Glaiṃ glāṃ' for the heart, 'gāṃ gīṃ hūṃ hrīṃ hrīṃ' for the head and crown; 'gūṃ' for armor, 'goṃ' for the eyes, 'gaiṃ' for the eyes, 'goṃ' for invocation and other rites.
आगच्छोल्काय गनन्धोल्कः पुष्पोल्को धूपकोल्ककः । दीपोल्काय महोल्काय बलिश्चाथ विस (मार्) जनम् ॥ १,१२९.
For arrival: 'olkāya'; for the group: 'ganandholkaḥ'; for flowers: 'puṣpolko'; for incense: 'dhūpakolkakaḥ'; for lamps: 'dīpolkāya'; for great offerings: 'maholkāya'; for sacrifice and the removal of obstacles.
