अज्ञानेन यथा ज्ञानं शौचमाशौचकं यथा । अश्रद्धया यथा श्रद्धा सत्यञ्चैवानृतैर्यथा ॥ १,१२७.
As ignorance destroys knowledge, impurity destroys purity, lack of faith destroys faith, and falsehood destroys truth.
हिमं यथोष्णमाहन्यादनर्थं चार्थसंचयः । यथा प्रकीर्तनाद्दानं तपो वै विस्मयाद्यथा ॥ १,१२७.
As cold is destroyed by heat, misfortune by accumulation of wealth, charity by proclamation, and austerity by amazement.
अशिक्षया यथा पुत्रो गावो दूरगतैर्यथा । क्रोधेन च यथा शान्तिर्यथा वित्तमवर्द्धनात् ॥ १,१२७.
As a son is ruined by lack of education, cows by being far away, tranquility by anger, and wealth by lack of increase.
ज्ञानेनैव यथा विद्या निष्कामेन यथा फलम् । तथैव पापनाशाय प्रोक्तेयं द्वादशी शुभा ॥ १,१२७.
As knowledge is attained through wisdom, fruit through desirelessness, so too, this auspicious Dvādaśī is declared for the destruction of sin.
ब्रह्महत्या सुरापानं स्तेयं गुर्वङ्गनागमः । युगपत्तुप्रजातानि(?) न निहन्ति त्रिपुष्करम् ॥ १,१२७.
The sins of killing a Brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, and approaching the wife of a teacher—even if all arise together—are not destroyed by the observance of the triple Puṣkara.
न चापि नैमिषं क्षेत्रं कुरुक्षेत्रं प्रभासकम् । कालिन्दी यमुना गङ्गा न चैव न सरस्वती ॥ १,१२७.
Nor are they destroyed by the sacred fields of Naimisha, Kurukshetra, or Prabhasa, nor by the rivers Kalindi, Yamuna, Ganga, or Sarasvati.
न चैव सर्वतीर्थानि एकादश्याः समानि हि । न दानं न जपो होमो न चान्यत्सुकृतं क्वचित् ॥ १,१२७.
Nor are all the holy places equal to the Ekadashi; neither gifts, nor recitation, nor oblations, nor any other virtuous act anywhere.
एकतः पृथिवीदानमेकतो हरिवासरः । ततोऽप्येका महापुण्या इयमेकादशी वरा ॥ १,१२७.
On one side is the gift of the earth, on the other is the day of Hari; yet even greater is this excellent Ekadashi, which is supremely meritorious.
अस्मिन्वराहपुरुषं कृत्वा देवं तु हाटकम् । घटोपरि नवे पात्रे कृत्वा वै ताम्रभाजने ॥ १,१२७.
On this day, having fashioned the form of Varaha, the divine boar, out of gold, and placing it upon a new vessel atop a pot, or in a copper dish,
सर्वबीजभृते विप्राः सितवस्त्रावगुण्ठिते । सहिरण्यप्रदीपाद्यैः कृत्वा पूजां प्रयत्ननः ॥ १,१२७.
With all kinds of seeds, O Brahmins, and covered with white cloth, together with golden lamps and other offerings, one should perform worship with effort.
वराहाय नमः पादौ क्रोडाकृतये नमः कटिम् । नाभिं गंभीरघोषाा उरः श्रीवत्सधारिणे ॥ १,१२७.
Salutation to Varaha at the feet, salutation to the boar form at the waist, to the navel with deep resonance, to the chest bearing the mark of Śrīvatsa.
बाहुं सहस्रशिरसे ग्रीवां सर्वेश्वराय च । मुखं सर्वात्मने पूज्यं ललाटं प्रभवाय च ॥ १,१२७.
To the arms of the thousand-headed one, to the neck of the Lord of all, to the face of the soul of all, to the forehead of the source of all power, one should offer worship.
केशाः शतमयूखाय पूज्या देवस्य चक्रिणः । विधिना पूजयित्वा तु कृत्वा जागरणं निशि ॥ १,१२७.
The hair, radiant with a hundred rays, should be worshipped as belonging to the divine wielder of the discus; having worshipped according to the prescribed method, one should keep vigil through the night.
श्रुत्वा पुराणं देवस्य माहात्म्यप्रतिपादकम् । प्रातर्विप्राय दत्त्वा च याचकाय शुभाय तत् ॥ १,१२७.
Having listened to the Purana that expounds the greatness of the deity, in the morning one should give it to a Brahmin, to a worthy supplicant.
कनकक्रोडसहितं सन्निवेद्य परिच्छदम् । पश्चात्तु पारणं कुर्यान्नातितृप्तः सकृद्व्रतः ॥ १,१२७.
Along with a golden boar, having presented the necessary items, afterwards one should break the fast, not excessively satisfied, having observed the vow once.
एवं कृत्वा नरो विद्यान्न भूय स्तनपो भवेत् । उपोष्यैकादशीं पुण्यां मुच्यते वै ऋणत्रयात् । मनोऽभिलषितावाप्तिः कृत्वा सर्वव्रतादिकम् ॥ १,१२७.
Having done thus, a person becomes learned and is not again a breast-fed child; having observed the holy Ekadashi, one is freed from the three debts, and attains whatever the mind desires, having performed all vows and the like.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १२८ ब्रह्मोवाच । व्रतानि व्यास वक्ष्यामि यैस्तुष्टः सर्वदो हरिः । शास्त्रोदितो हि नियमो व्रतं तच्च तपो मतम् ॥ १,१२८.
Brahma said: I will declare the vows, O Vyasa, by which Hari, the giver of all, is pleased. The discipline prescribed by scripture is called a vow, and that is regarded as austerity.
नियमास्तु विशेषाः स्युः व्रतस्यास्य दमादयः । नित्यं त्रिषवणं स्नायादधः शयी जितेन्द्रियः ॥ १,१२८.
The special disciplines of this vow are self-restraint and the like; one should bathe three times daily, sleep on the ground, and control the senses.
स्त्रीशूद्रपतितानां तु वर्जयेदभिभाषणम् । पवित्राणि च पञ्चैव जुहुयाच्चैव शक्तितः ॥ १,१२८.
One should avoid speaking with women, Shudras, and the fallen; and offer the five purifying substances as able.
कृच्छ्राण्येतानि सर्वाणि चरेत्सुकृतवान्नरः । केशानां रक्षणार्थं तु द्विगुणं व्रतमाचरेत् ॥ १,१२८.
A virtuous person should perform all these austerities; for the protection of the hair, one should observe the vow in double measure.
कांस्यं माषं मसूरं चचणकं कोरदूषकम् । शाकं मधु परान्नं च वर्जयेदुपवासवान् ॥ १,१२८.
Bronze vessels, black gram, lentils, chickpeas, millet, vegetables, honey, and other food should be avoided by one observing the fast.
पुष्पालङ्कारवस्त्राणि धूपगन्धानुलेपनम् । उपवासेन दुष्येत्तु दन्तधावनमञ्जनम् ॥ १,१२८.
Flowers, ornaments, garments, incense, fragrant ointments, as well as cleaning the teeth and applying collyrium, are spoiled by fasting.
दन्तकाष्ठं पञ्चगव्यं कृत्वा प्रातर्व्रतं चरेत् । असकृज्जलपानाच्च ताम्बूलस्य च भक्षणात् ॥ १,१२८.
One should use a toothstick made from five products of the cow and observe the morning vow; by repeatedly drinking water and eating betel, the vow is broken.
उपवासः प्रदुष्येत दिवास्वप्ना क्षमैथुनात् । क्षमा सत्यं दया दानं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः ॥ १,१२८.
Fasting is corrupted by sleeping during the day and sexual intercourse; patience, truthfulness, compassion, charity, purity, and control of the senses are prescribed.
देवपूजाग्निहवने सन्तोषोस्तेयमेव च । सर्वव्रतेष्वयं धर्मः सामान्यो दशधास्मृतः ॥ १,१२८.
Worship of deities, offering oblations into fire, contentment, and refraining from theft—these tenfold duties are regarded as common to all vows.
नक्षत्रदर्शनान्नक्तमनक्तं निशि भोजनम् । गोमूत्रं च पल दद्यादर्धाङ्गुष्ठं तु गोमयम् ॥ १,१२८.
Seeing the stars, eating at night or during the day, giving one pala of cow urine and half a thumb’s length of cow dung are prescribed.
क्षीरं सप्तपलं दद्याद्दध्नश्चैव पलत्रयम् । घृतमेकफलं दद्यात्पलमेकं कुशोदकम् ॥ १,१२८.
One should give seven palas of milk, three palas of curd, one pala of ghee, and one pala of water from kuśa grass.
गायत्त्र्या चैव गन्धेति आप्यायस्व दृ दधिग्रहः । तेजोऽसीति च देवस्य ब्रह्मकूर्चव्रतं चरेत् ॥ १,१२८.
With the recitation of the Gāyatrī and the Gandheti hymn, taking curd, and the invocation 'Tejo'si' to the deity, one should observe the Brahmakūrca vow.
अग्न्याधानं प्रतिष्ठां तु यज्ञदानव्रतानि च । वेदव्रतवृषोत्सर्गचूडाकरणमेखलाः ॥ १,१२८.
Establishing the sacred fire, consecration, sacrificial and charitable vows, Vedic vows, releasing the bull, the ceremony of shaving the head, and the sacred girdle are prescribed.
माङ्गल्यमभिषेकं च मलमासे विवर्जयत् । दर्शाद्दर्शस्य चान्द्रः स्यात्त्रिंशाहोभिस्तु सावनः ॥ १,१२८.
Auspicious rites and anointing should be avoided in the impure month; the lunar month from new moon to new moon consists of thirty days.
