O Vishnu, if I should die in the interval between the bright twelfth days of Kartika and Ashvina, let there be no breaking of my vow.
One who performs the vow should worship Hari after bathing thrice daily, using scents and the like; but should avoid anointing the body with fragrant ointments in the temple of the deity.
Then, having worshipped on the twelfth day, one should offer food to Brahmins; after that, the observer of the monthly fast of Hari should break the fast.
If, while observing the vow, one becomes faint, he may take milk and the like; by taking milk and similar things, the vow is not broken, and he attains both enjoyment and liberation.
Brahma said: I will declare the vows for Kartika; after bathing, one should worship Vishnu, either with a single meal, at night, for a month, or by begging.
Or with milk, vegetables, fruits, and the like, or again by fasting; being freed from all sins, and having fulfilled his desire, he attains Hari.
Always, the vow of Hari is the best; then comes the southern solstice, then the four-month vow, and after that, in Kartika, the Bhishma Panchaka.
Then, the best vow should be performed on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight; after bathing, one should worship Hari three times a day, along with ancestors and others, with offerings.
The silent one should worship with ghee and the like, with the five products of the cow and with water; after bathing, he should anoint with camphor and other fragrant substances.
A twice-born should burn incense of guggul smeared with ghee for five days; the offering should be the best food, and he should recite one hundred and eight times.

Om, obeisance to Vāsudeva! One should offer oblations of ghee, rice, sesame, and the like, using the eight-syllabled mantra ending with 'svāhā.'
On the first day, one should worship the feet of Hari with lotuses; on the second, the knees with bilva leaves; on the third, the navel with fragrant substances.
On the fifth day, one should worship the shoulders with bilva and java flowers, and the head; with mālatī flowers, the deity is to be laid on the ground, and cow dung should be consumed in order.
On the fifth day, one should take the five products of the cow: cow urine, curd, and milk; on the fifteenth night, one should observe a night fast—thus the vow-holder attains both enjoyment and liberation.
One should always observe the Ekādaśī vow on both fortnights; it destroys the multitude of sins and hell, and always grants the abode of Viṣṇu.
Wherever there is Ekādaśī, Dvādaśī, and Trayodaśī at night’s end, there Hari is always present.
Wherever Daśamī and Ekādaśī occur, there too are demons and the like; on Dvādaśī one should break the fast, and observe the rules even in cases of impurity or death.
One should fast on the fourteenth and the first days when they are mixed with the previous day; O sage, on the full moon and new moon, and when the first day is mixed.
One should also fast on the second and third days when they are mixed, and on the third joined with the fourth; always on the fourth joined with it, and on the fifth joined with the sixth, and the seventh joined with the sixth.

Īśvara said: In the dark half of the month between Māgha and Phālguna, the fourteenth day—on that night, by keeping vigil and worshipping Rudra, one attains both enjoyment and liberation.
Hara, when worshipped with desire, is to be honored on Dvādaśī, and Keśava as well; when worshipped by those who have fasted, he delivers them from hell.

There was a liṅga there; while guarding his own body, he threw down leaves, not knowing they were falling on the liṅga’s head.
To remove the dust, he poured water on the liṅga; and by accident, an arrow slipped from his hand.
Going to the ground on his knees, he touched and took hold of the liṅga; thus, bathing, touching, worshipping, and keeping vigil were accomplished.
In the morning, having returned home, he ate food given by his wife; in due course, he died and was bound by the nooses of Yama’s attendants and led away.
Then, having been defeated in battle by my attendants, he was released, and together with the dog, that pure attendant remained by my side.
Thus, from ignorance comes merit, and from knowledge, inexhaustible merit; on the thirteenth day, one who observes vows should worship Shiva and undertake this discipline.
