गीतीमयं तन्तकाष्ठं फाल्गुने गोमतीं यजेत् । कुन्दैः कृत्वा दन्तकाष्ठं जीवाशः शष्कुलीप्रदः ॥ १,१२०.
In Phālguna, worship Gomati with musical instruments made from stringed wood; having made toothsticks from kunda wood, the giver of life offers śaṣkulī cakes.
विशालाक्षीं दमनकैश्चैत्रे च कृसरप्रदः । दधिप्राशो दन्तकाष्ठं तगरं श्रीमुखीं यजेत् ॥ १,१२०.
In Caitra, worship Viśālākṣī with damanaka flowers, giving rice gruel; offer curd-rice, toothsticks, and tagara to Śrīmukhī.
वैशाखे कर्णिकारैश्च अशोकाशो वटप्रदः । ज्येष्ठे नारायणीमर्चेच्छतपत्रैश्च खण्डदः । लवङ्गाशो भवेदेव आषाढे माधवीं यजेत् ॥ १,१२०.
In Vaiśākha, worship with karṇikāra flowers; offering aśoka, one gives banyan; in Jyeṣṭha, worship Nārāyaṇī with śatapatra flowers, giving khaṇḍa; in Āṣāḍha, offer clove and worship Mādhavī.
तिलाशो बिल्वपत्रैश्च क्षीरान्नवटकप्रदः । औदुम्बरं दन्तकाष्ठं तगर्याः श्रावणे श्रियम् ॥ १,१२०.
In Śrāvaṇa, offer sesame, bilva leaves, milk-rice, and banyan; worship Audumbara with toothsticks and tagara, and offer prosperity.
दन्तकाष्ठं मल्लिकाया क्षीरदो ह्युत्तमां यजेत् । पद्मैर्यजेद्भाद्रपदे शृङ्गदाशो गृडादिदः ॥ १,१२०.
In Śrāvaṇa, worship Mallikā with toothsticks and offer milk; in Bhādrapada, worship with lotuses, offering śṛṅgadā and gṛḍādi.
राजपुत्रीं चाश्वयुजे जपापुष्पैश्च जीरकम् । प्राशयेन्निशि नैवेद्यैः कृसरैः कार्तिके यजेत् ॥ १,१२०.
In Āśvayuja, worship the royal daughter with hibiscus flowers and cumin; at night, offer rice gruel as food, and in Kārtika, worship with rice gruel.
जातीपुष्पैः पद्मजां च पञ्चगव्याशनो यजेत् । घृतोदनं च वर्षान्ते सपत्नीकान्द्विजान्यजेत् ॥ १,१२०.
Worship Padmajā with jasmine flowers, offering five products from the cow; at the end of the rainy season, offer clarified butter rice and worship Brahmins with their wives.
उमामहेश्वरं पूज्य प्रदद्याच्च गुडादिकम् । वस्त्रच्छत्रसुवर्णाद्यैः रात्रौ च कृतजागरः । गीतवाद्यैर्ददत्प्रतर्गवाद्यं सर्वमान्पुयात् ॥ १,१२०.
Having worshipped Umā and Maheśvara, one should give jaggery and similar offerings, along with cloth, umbrella, gold, and other gifts; keeping vigil at night with song and music, one should give all that is due and purify oneself.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १२१ ब्रह्मोवाच । चातुर्मास्यव्रतान्यूचे एकादश्यां समाचरेत् । आषाढ्यां पौर्णमास्यां वा सर्वेणहरिमर्च्यच ॥ १,१२१.
Brahma said: I will explain the vows of the four-month period, which should be performed on the eleventh day; on the full moon of Āṣāḍha or at any time, one should worship Hari with all offerings.
इदं व्रतं मया देव गृहीतं पुरतस्तव । निर्विघ्नं सिद्धिमाप्नोतु प्रसन्ने त्वयि केशव ॥ १,१२१.
O Lord, I have undertaken this vow before you; may it be completed without obstacles, and may I attain success with your favor, O Keśava.
गृहीतेऽस्मिन्व्रते देव यद्यपूर्णे म्रियाम्यहम् । तन्मे भवतु सम्पूर्णं त्वत्प्रसादाज्जनार्दन ॥ १,१२१.
O Lord, if I die before completing this vow, may it be considered fulfilled by your grace, O Janārdana.
एवमभ्यर्च्य गृह्णीयाद्व्रतार्चनजपादिकम् । सर्वाघं च क्षयं याति चिकीर्षेद्यो हरेर्व्रतम् ॥ १,१२१.
Thus, having worshipped, one should accept the vow, its worship, and recitation; whoever undertakes Hari's vow sees all sins destroyed.
स्नात्वायोभ्यच्य गृह्णीयाद्व्रतार्चनजपादिकम् । स्नात्वा यच्चतुरो मासानेकभक्तेन पूजयेत् । विष्णुं स याति विष्णोर्व लोकं मलविवर्जितम् ॥ १,१२१.
After bathing, one should perform worship, recitation, and other observances of the vow; and having bathed, if for four months one worships with a single meal, he attains Vishnu and the spotless world of Vishnu.
मद्यमांससुरात्यगी वेदविद्धरिपूजनात् । तैलवर्जि विष्णुलोकं विष्णुभाक्कृच्छ्रपादकृत् ॥ १,१२१.
By abandoning liquor, meat, and wine, and by worshipping the enemy of the demons with knowledge of the Vedas, and by avoiding oil, one attains the world of Vishnu, sharing in Vishnu, having performed difficult observances.
एकरात्रोपवासाच्च देवो वैमानिको भवेत् । श्वेतद्वीपं त्रिरात्रात्तु व्रजेत्षष्ठान्नकृन्नरः ॥ १,१२१.
By fasting for one night, a person becomes divine and attains a celestial body; by fasting for three nights, a person who abstains from the sixth meal goes to Shvetadvipa.
चान्द्रायणाद्धरेर्धाम लभेन्मुक्तिमयाचिताम् । प्राजापत्यं विष्णुलोकं पराकव्रतकृद्धरिम् ॥ १,१२१.
By the Chandrayana vow, one attains the abode of Hari and the desired liberation; by the Prajapatya vow, one attains the world of Vishnu, and by the Paraka vow, one attains Hari.
सक्तुयावकभिक्षाशी पयोदधिघृताशनः । गोमूत्रयावकाहारः पञ्चगव्यकृताशनः । शाकमलफलाद्याशी रसवर्जो च विष्णुभाक् ॥ १,१२१.
He who eats only saktu, barley, or lives on alms, or eats only milk, curds, or ghee; who subsists on cow urine and barley, or who eats food prepared with the five products of the cow; who eats vegetables, roots, fruits, and the like, and who avoids juices—he becomes a partaker of Vishnu.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १२२ ब्रह्मोवाच । व्रतं मासोपवासाख्यं सर्वोत्कृष्टं वदामिते । वानप्रस्थो यतिर्नारी कुर्यान्मासोपवासकम् ॥ १,१२२.
Brahma said: I will tell you of the vow called the monthly fast, which is the most excellent of all; a forest-dweller, ascetic, or woman should perform the monthly fast.
आश्विनस्य सिते पक्षे एकादश्यामुपोषितः । व्रतमेतत्तु गृह्णीयाद्यावत्त्रिंशद्दिनानि तु ॥ १,१२२.
On the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Ashvina, having fasted, one should undertake this vow for thirty days.
अद्यप्रभृत्यहं विष्णो यावदुत्थानकं तव । अर्चयेत्वामनश्रंस्तु दिनानि त्रिंशदेव तु ॥ १,१२२.
From today onward, O Vishnu, until your awakening, I will worship you without laziness for thirty days.
कार्तिकाश्विनयोर्विष्णो द्वादश्योः शुक्लयोरहम् । म्रियेयद्यन्तराले तु व्रतभङ्गो न मे भवेत् ॥ १,१२२.
O Vishnu, if I should die in the interval between the bright twelfth days of Kartika and Ashvina, let there be no breaking of my vow.
हरिं यजोत्त्रिषवणस्नायी गन्धादिभिर्व्रती । गात्राभ्यङ्गं गन्धलेपं देवतायतने त्यजेत् ॥ १,१२२.
One who performs the vow should worship Hari after bathing thrice daily, using scents and the like; but should avoid anointing the body with fragrant ointments in the temple of the deity.
द्वादश्यामथ संपूज्य प्रदद्याद्द्विजभोजनम् । ततश्च पारणं कुर्याद्धरेर्मासोपवासकृत् ॥ १,१२२.
Then, having worshipped on the twelfth day, one should offer food to Brahmins; after that, the observer of the monthly fast of Hari should break the fast.
दुग्धादिप्राशनं कुर्याद्व्रतस्थो मूर्छितोऽन्तरा । दुग्धाद्यैर्न व्रतं नश्येद्भुक्तिमुक्तिमवाप्नुयात् ॥ १,१२२.
If, while observing the vow, one becomes faint, he may take milk and the like; by taking milk and similar things, the vow is not broken, and he attains both enjoyment and liberation.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १२३ ब्रह्मोवाच । व्रतानि कार्तिके वक्ष्ये स्नात्वा विष्णुं प्रपूजयेत् । एकभक्तेन नक्तेन मासं वायाचितेन वा ॥ १,१२३.
Brahma said: I will declare the vows for Kartika; after bathing, one should worship Vishnu, either with a single meal, at night, for a month, or by begging.
दुग्धशाकफलाद्यैर्वा उपवासेन वा पुनः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः प्राप्तकामो हरिं व्रजेत् ॥ १,१२३.
Or with milk, vegetables, fruits, and the like, or again by fasting; being freed from all sins, and having fulfilled his desire, he attains Hari.
सदा हरेर्व्रतं श्रेष्ठं ततः स्याद्दक्षिणायने । चातुर्मास्ये ततस्तस्मात्कार्तिके भीष्मपञ्चकम् ॥ १,१२३.
Always, the vow of Hari is the best; then comes the southern solstice, then the four-month vow, and after that, in Kartika, the Bhishma Panchaka.
ततः श्रेष्ठव्रतं शुक्लस्यैकादश्यां समाचरेत् । स्नात्वा त्रिकालं पित्रादीन्यवाद्यैरर्चयेद्धरिम् ॥ १,१२३.
Then, the best vow should be performed on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight; after bathing, one should worship Hari three times a day, along with ancestors and others, with offerings.
यजेन्मौनी घृताद्यैश्च पञ्चगव्येन वारिभिः । स्नापयित्वाथ कर्पूरमुखैश्चैवानुलेपयेत् ॥ १,१२३.
The silent one should worship with ghee and the like, with the five products of the cow and with water; after bathing, he should anoint with camphor and other fragrant substances.
घृताक्तगुग्गुलैर्धूपं द्विजः पञ्चदिनं दहेत् । नैवेद्यं परमान्नं तु जपेदष्टोत्तरं शतम् ॥ १,१२३.
A twice-born should burn incense of guggul smeared with ghee for five days; the offering should be the best food, and he should recite one hundred and eight times.
