विद्या नाम कुरूपरूपमधिकं विद्यातिगुप्तं धनं विद्या साधुकरी जनप्रियकरी विद्या गुरूणां गुरुः । विद्या बन्धुजनार्तिनाशनकरी विद्या परं दैवतं विद्या राजसु पूजिता हि मनुजो विद्यविहीनः पशुः ॥ १,११५.
Knowledge is called the highest form, a treasure greater than all others, a wealth that cannot be stolen; knowledge brings virtue, wins the favor of people, is the teacher of teachers, removes the suffering of relatives, is the supreme deity, is honored among kings, and a person without knowledge is like a beast.
गृहे चाभ्यन्तरे द्रव्यं लग्नं चैव तु दृश्यते । अशेषं हरणीयं च विद्या न ह्रियते परैः ॥ १,११५.
Wealth and possessions kept inside a house can be seen and taken away entirely, but knowledge cannot be stolen by others.
शौनकीयं नीतिसारं विष्णुः सर्वत्रतानि च । कथयामास वैपूर्वं तत्र शुश्राव शङ्करः । शङ्करादशृणोद्व्यासो व्यासादस्माभिरेव च ॥ १,११५.
Vishnu formerly spoke everywhere the essence of polity from the Shaunakīya tradition; there, Shankara listened, Vyasa heard from Shankara, and we have heard from Vyasa.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् ११६ ब्रह्मोवाच । व्रतानि व्यास वक्ष्यामि हरिर्यैः सर्वदो भवेत् । सर्वमासर्क्षतिथिषु वारेषु हरिरर्चितः ॥ १,११६.
Brahma said: I will declare the vows, O Vyasa, by which Hari becomes the giver of all; when Hari is worshipped on every month, star, lunar day, and weekday.
एकभक्तेन नक्तेन उपवासफलादिना । ददाति धनधान्यादि पुत्रराज्यजयादिकम् ॥ १,११६.
By single-minded devotion, by fasting at night, and by the fruits of such observances, he grants wealth, grain, sons, kingdom, victory, and more.
वैश्वानरः प्रतिपदि कुबेरः पूजितोऽर्थदः । उपोष्य ब्रह्मा प्रतिपद्यर्चितः श्रीस्तथाश्विनी ॥ १,११६.
On the first lunar day, Vaiśvānara and Kubera, when worshipped, grant wealth; after fasting, Brahma is worshipped on the first day, as well as Shri and the Ashvins.
द्वितीयायां यमो लक्ष्मीनारायण इहार्थदः । तृतीयायां त्रिदेवाश्च गौरीविघ्नेशशङ्कराः ॥ १,११६.
On the second day, Yama and Lakshmi-Narayana grant wealth here; on the third day, the three gods, Gauri, Vighnesha, and Shankara.
चतुर्थ्यां च चतुर्व्यूहः पञ्चम्यामर्चितो हरिः । कार्तिकेयो रविः षष्ठ्यां सप्तम्यां भास्करोऽर्थदः ॥ १,११६.
On the fourth day, the four manifestations are to be worshipped; on the fifth, Hari is worshipped; on the sixth, Kartikeya and the Sun; on the seventh, Bhaskara grants wealth.
दुर्गाष्टम्यां नवम्यां च मातरोऽथ दिशोऽर्थदाः । दशम्यां च यमश्चन्द्र एकादश्यामृषीन्यजेत् ॥ १,११६.
On Durga's eighth and the ninth day, the Mothers and the directions grant wealth; on the tenth, Yama and the Moon; on the eleventh, one should worship the sages.
द्वादश्यां च हरिः कामस्त्रयोदश्यां महेश्वरः । चतुर्दश्यां पञ्चदश्यां ब्रह्मा च पितरोऽर्थदाः ॥ १,११६.
On the twelfth, Hari and Kama; on the thirteenth, Maheshvara; on the fourteenth and fifteenth, Brahma and the ancestors grant wealth.
अमावास्यां पूजनीया वारा वै भास्करादयः । नक्षत्राणि च योगाश्च पूजिताः सर्वदायकाः ॥ १,११६.
On the new moon, the days of the week, beginning with the Sun, are to be worshipped; the stars and yogas, when worshipped, grant all desires.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् ११७ ब्रह्मोवाच । मार्गशीर्षे सिते पक्षे व्यासांनङ्गत्रयोदशी । मल्लिकाजं दन्तकाष्ठं धुतूरैः पूजयेच्छिवम् ॥ १,११७.
Brahma said: In the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, on the thirteenth day of Vyasa and Ananga, one should worship Shiva with jasmine wood for cleaning the teeth and with dhatura flowers.
अनङ्गायेति नैवेद्यं मधप्राश्याथ पौषके । योगेश्वरं पूजयेच्च बिल्वपत्रैः कदम्बजम् । दन्तकाष्ठं चन्दनादि नैवेद्यं कृसरादिकम् ॥ १,११७.
Offering food called 'Anangāya,' and tasting honey in the month of Pausha, one should worship Yogeshvara with bilva leaves and kadamba flowers; for cleaning the teeth, use sandalwood and other substances, and offer rice and similar foods.
माघे नटेश्वरायार्च्य कुन्दैर्मौक्तिकमालया । प्लक्षेण दन्तकाष्ठं च नैवेद्यं पूरिका मुने ॥ १,११७.
In Magha, one should worship Nateshvara with jasmine flowers and a pearl garland; for cleaning the teeth, use plaksha wood, and offer purika cakes, O sage.
वीरेश्वरं फाल्गुने तु पूजयेत्तु मरूबकैः । शर्कराशाकमण्डाश्च चूतजं दन्तधावनम् ॥ १,११७.
In Phalguna, one should worship Vireshvara with marubaka flowers; offer sugar, greens, and mandā cakes, and for cleaning the teeth, use mango wood.
चैत्रे यजेत्सु रूपाय कर्पूरं प्राशयेन्निशि । दन्तधावनाटजं नैवेद्यं शष्कुलीं ददेत् ॥ १,११७.
In Chaitra, one should worship Surupa at night with camphor; for cleaning the teeth, use ataja wood, and offer shashkuli cakes as food.
पूजा दमनकः शम्भोर्वेशाखेऽशोक्रपुष्पकैः । महारूपाय नैवेद्यं गुडभक्तं पुट्टबरम् ॥ १,११७.
The worship of Shiva is performed with damanaka leaves and ashoka flowers at his abode; for the great form, the offering is sweetened rice with jaggery and the best of cakes.
दन्तकाष्ठं प्राशयेच्च ददेज्जतीफलं तथा । प्रद्युम्नं पूजयेज्ज्येष्ठे चम्पकैर्बिल्वजं दशेत् ॥ १,११७.
One should give tooth-cleaning sticks and also offer nutmeg; Pradyumna is to be worshipped in the month of Jyeshtha with champaka flowers, and Bilvaja with ten kinds of offerings.
लवगारा तथा षढि उमामदति शासनः? । अगुरुं दन्तकाष्ठं च तमपामार्गकैर्यजेत् ॥ १,११७.
Cloves and cardamom, as well as shadhu (six-spiced mixture), are prescribed for Uma's beloved; one should offer aguru, tooth-cleaning sticks, and worship with apamarga leaves.
श्रावणे करवीरं च शम्भवे शूलपाणये । गन्धाशनो घृताद्यैश्च करवीरजशोधनम् ॥ १,११७.
In the month of Shravana, oleander is offered to Shiva, the wielder of the trident; the one who eats fragrance is to be worshipped with ghee and other substances, and with oleander flowers as purification.
सद्योजातं भाद्रपदे बकुलैः पूपकैर्यजेत् । गन्धर्वाशो मदनकमाश्विने च सुराधिपम् ॥ १,११७.
Sadyōjāta is to be worshipped in Bhadrapada with bakula flowers and cakes; Gandharvasha and Madanaka in Ashvina, and the lord of gods as well.
चम्पकैः स्वर्णवा (धार्) यादो जिन्मोदकसंप्रदः । खादिरं दन्तकाष्ठं च कार्तिके रुद्रमर्चयेत् ॥ १,११७.
With champaka flowers and golden threads, and by offering modaka sweets, one should worship Rudra in Kartika with khadira tooth-sticks.
बदर्या दन्तकाष्ठं च मदनो दशमाशनः । क्षीरशाकप्रदः पद्मैरब्दन्ते शिवमर्चयेत् ॥ १,११७.
With badara tooth-sticks, Madana is the tenth to be honored; the giver of milk and greens is to be worshipped with lotuses at the end of the year.
रतिमुक्तमनङ्गं च स्वर्णमण्डलसंस्थितम् । गन्धाद्यैर्दशसाहस्रं तिलव्रीह्यादि होमयेत् ॥ १,११७.
Rati, Muktamananga, and the one established in a golden circle are to be offered ten thousand oblations with fragrant substances, sesame, and rice, and the like.
जागरं गीतवदित्रं प्रभितऽभ्यार्च्य वेदयेत् । द्विजाय शय्यां पात्रं च छत्रं वस्त्रमुपानहौ ॥ १,११७.
One should perform a night vigil with singing and instrumental music, and after worship, offer to a Brahmin a bed, a vessel, an umbrella, clothing, and sandals.
गां द्विजं भोजयेद्भक्त्या कृतकृत्यो भवेन्नरः । एतदुद्यापनं सर्वं व्रतेषु ध्येपमीदृशम् । फलञ्च श्रीसुतारोग्यसौभाग्यस्वर्गतं भवेत् ॥ १,११७.
By feeding a cow and a Brahmin with devotion, a man becomes accomplished; this is the complete conclusion of the vow, and such observance brings the fruits of prosperity, sons, health, good fortune, and heaven.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् ११८ ब्रह्मोवाच । व्रतं कैवल्यशमनमखण्डद्वादशीं वदे । मागशीर्षे सिते पक्षे गव्याशी समुपोषितः ॥ १,११८.
Brahma said: I will describe the vow called Kaivalya-shamana, the unbroken Dvadashi; in the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, one who has fasted should eat only cow's products.
द्वादश्यां पूजये द्विष्णुं दद्यान्मासचतुष्टयम् । पञ्चव्रीहियुतं पात्रं विप्रायेदमुदाहरेत् ॥ १,११८.
On Dvadashi, one should worship Vishnu and give four months' worth of food; a vessel containing five kinds of rice should be offered to a Brahmin with these words.
सप्तजन्मनि हे विष्णो यन्मया हि व्रतं कृतम् । भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादेन तदखण्डमिहास्तु मे ॥ १,११८.
"O Vishnu, in seven births, whatever vow I have performed, by your grace, O Lord, may that remain unbroken for me here."
यथाखण्डं जगत्सर्वं त्वमेव पुरुषोत्तम । तथाखिलान्यखण्डानि व्रितानि मम सन्ति वै ॥ १,११८.
"Just as you, Supreme Person, are the unbroken whole of all the worlds, so may all my vows likewise remain unbroken."
