Honor is truly the root of wealth; if there is honor, what use is wealth? For one who has lost honor and pride, what use is wealth or even life?
The lowest seek wealth, the middling seek both wealth and honor, and the best seek honor; for honor is the wealth of the great.

There is no anointing or consecration performed for a lion in the forest; by the strength of its own nature, it becomes king of the beasts.

Separation from a beloved, disgrace from one's own people, remaining debt, service to a wicked person, and friends who turn away due to poverty—these five burn intensely, even without fire.
Among thousands of worries, four are as sharp as a razor's edge: insult from the lowly, hunger, a wife who is indifferent, and obstruction from one's own kin.

The deer, elephant, moth, bee, and fish are each destroyed by one of five things; so how can a person who serves all five not be ruined?
An impatient, harsh, arrogant, poorly dressed, or self-invited Brahmin—these five, even if equal to Brihaspati, are not to be honored.

The shadow of a cloud, affection from a wicked person, association with another's wife—these five are unstable states, as are youth and wealth.
Life in this world is unstable, as are wealth and youth; children, wife, and others are also unstable—only righteousness, fame, and good reputation are stable.
A hundred years of life is truly very little; night takes away half, and the rest is lost to disease, sorrow, old age, and fatigue—thus, even that is fruitless.
The lifespan of humans is a hundred years, but half is lost in night; of the remainder, half or more passes in childhood, and some in separation from loved ones, suffering, and death, or in service to rulers; what remains is as fickle as the waves of water—what pride can the proud take in it?
Day and night, old age moves about the world in its own form; death devours beings just as the serpent swallows the wind.

That which is lived, even for a moment, by humans whose knowledge, courage, and honor are unbroken—this alone is called life by the wise; even a crow lives long and eats offerings.
What is the use of life without wealth or honor? What is the use of a friend who is fearful and suspicious? Live with the resolve of a lion, go forth without despair; even a crow lives long and eats offerings.
He who shows no compassion to himself, his teacher, his servants, the poor, or in the affairs of friends—what is the fruit of his life among men? Even a crow lives long and eats offerings.
He whose days pass without the three aims of life—he, though breathing, does not live, like a blacksmith's bellows.
Success comes from acting independently, not by following others; those whose actions depend on others, though living, are as good as dead.
Cowards are always full, like a mouse with a handful of grain; yet the coward, though never satisfied, is pleased even with a little.

The world is not pleased with words lacking substance; life is rooted in honor—when honor fades, how can there be happiness?
