द्विजिह्वमुद्वेगकरं क्रूरमेकान्तदारुणम् । खलस्याहेश्च वदनमपकाराय केवलम् ॥ १,११२.
The speech of a double-tongued, agitating, extremely cruel, and utterly harsh person is only for causing harm to the innocent.
दुर्जनः परिहर्तव्यो विद्ययालङ्कृतोऽपिसन् । मणिना भूषितः सर्पः किमसौ न भयङ्करः ॥ १,११२.
An evil person should be avoided, even if adorned with learning; is not a snake, adorned with a jewel, still terrifying?
अकारणविष्कृतकोपधारिणः खलाद्भयं कस्य न नाम जायते । विषं महाहेर्विषमस्य दुर्वचः सदुः सहं सन्निपतेत्सदा मुखे ॥ १,११२.
Who would not fear a wicked person who becomes angry without cause? The poison of a great serpent, and the harsh words of such a one, always gather together in the mouth.
तुल्यार्थं तुल्यसामर्थ्यं मर्मज्ञं व्यवसायिनम् । अर्धराज्यहरं भृत्यं यो हन्यात्स न हन्यते ॥ १,११२.
He who kills a servant equal in wealth, ability, knowledge of secrets, and determination, who seizes half the kingdom, is himself not slain.
शूरत्वयुक्ता मृदुमन्दवाक्या जितेन्द्रियाः सत्यपराक्रमाश्च । प्रागेव पश्चाद्विपरी तरुपा ये ते तु भृत्या न हिता भवन्ति ॥ १,११२.
Those who are brave, but speak softly and slowly, have mastered their senses, and are truly valiant—if they are first one way and later the opposite, such servants are not beneficial.
निरालस्याः सुसन्तुष्टाः प्रतिबोधकाः । सुखदुः खसमा धीरा भृत्या लोकेषु दुर्लभाः ॥ १,११२.
Servants who are free from laziness, well content, alert, patient in happiness and sorrow, and steadfast—such servants are rare in the world.
क्षान्तिस्तयविहीनश्च क्रूरबुद्धिश्च निन्दकः । दाम्भिकः कपटी चैव शठश्च स्पृहयान्वितः । अशक्तो भयभीतश्च राज्ञा त्यक्तव्य एव सः ॥ १,११२.
One who lacks patience and modesty, has a cruel mind, is slanderous, deceitful, hypocritical, cunning, greedy, incapable, and fearful—such a person should indeed be dismissed by the king.
सुसन्धानानि चास्त्राणि शस्त्राणि विविधानि च । दुर्गे प्रवेशितव्यानि ततः शत्रुं निपातयेत् ॥ १,११२.
Well-prepared weapons and various arms should be brought into the fortress; then the enemy should be struck down.
षण्मासमथ वर्षं वा सन्धिं कुर्यान्नराधिपः । पश्यन्सञ्चितमात्मानं पुनः शत्रुं निपातयेत् ॥ १,११२.
The king should make a treaty for six months or a year, watching over himself carefully, and then strike down the enemy again.
मूर्खान्नियोजयेद्यस्तु त्रयोऽप्येते महीपतेः । अयशश्चार्थनाशश्च नरके चैव पातनम् ॥ १,११२.
He who appoints fools—any of these three—for the king, brings disgrace, loss of wealth, and a fall into hell.
यत्किञ्चित्कुरुते कर्म शुभं वा यादि वाशुभम् । तेन स्म वर्धते राजा सूक्ष्मतो भृत्यकार्यतः ॥ १,११२.
Whatever action a servant performs, whether good or bad, by that the king is affected, even in subtle matters.
तस्माद्भूमीश्वरः प्राज्ञं धर्मकामार्थसाधने । नियोज येद्धिसततं गोब्राह्मणहिताय वै ॥ १,११२.
Therefore, the lord of the land should always appoint a wise person, skilled in the pursuit of righteousness, desire, and wealth, for the welfare of cows and Brahmins.
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् ११३ सूत उवाच । गुणवन्तं नियुञ्जीत गुणहीनं विवर्जयेत् । पण्डितस्य गुणाः सर्वे मूर्वे दोषाश्च केवलाः ॥ १,११३.
Sūta said: One should appoint a person of virtue and avoid one lacking in virtue. All qualities belong to the learned, while only faults belong to the ignorant.
सद्भिरासीत सततं सद्भिः कुर्वीत सङ्गतिम् । सद्भिर्विवादं मैत्रीञ्च नासद्भिः किञ्चिदाचरेत् ॥ १,११३.
One should always associate with the virtuous, form connections with the virtuous, and engage in friendship and debate with them; nothing should be done with the unvirtuous.
पण्डितैश्च विर्नातैश्च धर्मशैः सत्यवादिभिः । बन्ध्स्थोऽपि तिष्ठेच्च न तु राज्ये खलैः सह ॥ १,११३.
Even if bound by ties, one should remain with scholars, the wise, the righteous, and those who speak truth; but never with the wicked in positions of power.
सावशेषाणि कार्याणि कुवत्रर्थे युज्यते । तस्मात्सर्वाणि कार्याणि सावशेषाणि कारयेत् ॥ १,११३.
Tasks that leave a residue are suited for inferior purposes; therefore, all tasks should be performed so that some residue remains.
मधुहेव दुहेत्सारं कुसुमञ्च न घातयेत् । वत्सापेक्षी दुहेत्क्षीरं भूमिं गाञ्चैव पार्थिपः ॥ १,११३.
Just as honey is taken without destroying the flower, and milk is drawn from the cow with regard for her calf, so should the king take from the earth and cattle.
यथाक्रमेण पुष्पेभ्यश्चिनुते मधु षट्पदः । तथा वित्तमु पादाय राजा कुर्वीत सञ्चयम् ॥ १,११३.
As the bee gathers honey from flowers in order, so should the king collect wealth gradually for his treasury.
वल्मीकं मधुजालञ्च शुक्लण्क्षे तु चन्द्रमाः । राजद्रव्यञ्च भैक्ष्यञ्च स्तोकंस्तोकं प्रवर्धते ॥ १,११३.
A termite mound, a honeycomb, the waxing moon, royal wealth, and alms all increase little by little.
अर्जितस्य क्षयं दृष्टा संप्रदत्तस्य सञ्चयम् । अवन्ध्यं दिवसं कुर्याद्दानध्ययनकर्मसु ॥ १,११३.
One sees loss in what is acquired, and increase in what is given away; one should make each day fruitful through acts of charity, study, and duty.
वनेऽपि दोषाः प्रभवन्ति रागिणां गृहेऽपि पञ्चेन्द्रियनिग्रहस्तपः । अकुत्सिते कर्मणि यः प्रवर्तते निवृत्तरागस्य गृहं तपोवनम् ॥ १,११३.
Even in the forest, faults arise for those attached; in the home, restraint of the five senses is asceticism. Whoever acts without blame, for one whose passions are subdued, the home becomes a hermitage.
सत्येन रक्ष्यते धर्मो विद्या योगेन रक्ष्यते । मृजया रक्ष्यते पात्रं कुलं शलिन रक्ष्यते ॥ १,११३.
Righteousness is protected by truth, knowledge by yoga, a vessel by cleanliness, and a lineage by good conduct.
वरं विन्ध्याटव्यां निवसनमभुक्तस्य मरणं वरं सर्पाकीर्णे शयनमथ कूपे निपतनम् । वरं भ्रान्तावर्ते सभयजलमध्ये प्रविशनं न तु स्वीये पक्षे हि धनमणु देहीति कथनम् ॥ १,११३.
Better to dwell in the Vindhya forest, to die unfed, to sleep among snakes, to fall into a well, to enter turbulent waters, than to say 'Give me even a little wealth' to one's own kin.
भाग्यक्षयेषु क्षीयन्ते नोपभोगेन सम्पदः । पूर्वार्जिते हि सुकृते न नश्यन्ति कदाचन ॥ १,११३.
Wealth diminishes not through enjoyment, but when fortune is exhausted; good deeds performed in the past never perish at any time.
विप्राणां भूषणं विद्या पृथिव्या भूषणं नृपः । नभसो भूषणं चन्द्रः शीलं सर्वस्य भूषणम् ॥ १,११३.
Knowledge is the ornament of Brahmins, the king is the ornament of the earth, the moon is the ornament of the sky, and character is the ornament of all.
एते ते चन्द्रतुल्याः क्षितिपतितनया भीमसेनार्जुनाद्याः शुराः सत्यप्रतिज्ञा दिनकरवपुषः केशवेनोपगूढाः । ते वै दुष्टग्रहस्थाः कृपणवशगता भैक्ष्यचर्यां प्रयाताः को वा कस्मिन्समर्थो भवति विधिवशाद्भ्रामयेत्कर्मरेखा ॥ १,११३.
These sons of kings, equal to the moon—Bhīma, Arjuna, and others—heroes of truthful vows, embraced by Kṛṣṇa of solar form, fell under evil stars, became destitute, and took up begging. Who is capable, and in what, when fate turns the lines of action?
ब्रह्मा येन कुलालवन्नियमितो ब्रह्माण्डभाण्डोदरे विष्णुर्येन दशावतारगहने क्षिप्तो महासङ्कटे । रुद्रोयेन कपालपाणिपुटके भिक्षाटनं कारितः सूर्यो भ्राम्यति नित्यमेव गगने तरमै नमः कर्णणे ॥ १,११३.
By whom Brahmā is restrained like a potter, within the vessel of the universe; by whom Viṣṇu was cast into the peril of ten incarnations; by whom Rudra was made to beg with a skull in hand; by whom the sun ever circles the sky—salutations to that fate, the doer of all.
दाता बलिर्याचकको मुरारिर्दानं मही विप्रमुखस्य मध्ये । दत्त्वा फलं बन्धनमेव लब्धं नमोऽस्तु ते दैव यथेष्टकारिणे ॥ १,११३.
Bali is the giver, Murāri the beggar; the earth is given in the midst of Brahmins. Having given, the fruit received was bondage. Salutations to you, O fate, who acts as you wish.
माता यदि भवेल्लक्ष्मीः पिता साक्षाज्जनार्दनः । कुबुद्धौ प्रतिपत्तिश्चैत्तस्मिन्दण्डः पतेत्सदा ॥ १,११३.
Even if one's mother is Lakṣmī and one's father is Janārdana himself, if one acts with evil intent, punishment will always fall upon him.
येनयेन यथा यद्वत्पुरा कर्म सुनिश्चितम् । तत्तदेवान्तरा भुङ्क्ते स्वयमाहितमात्मना ॥ १,११३.
Whatever actions were certainly performed in the past, in whatever manner and by whom, one experiences their results, self-imposed, in due course.
