नीतिसारं सुरेन्द्राय इममूच बृहस्पतिः । सर्वज्ञो येन चेन्द्रोऽभूद्दैत्यान्हत्वाप्नुयाद्दिवम् ॥ १,१०८.
Bṛhaspati spoke this essence of policy to the lord of the gods, by which Indra, becoming all-knowing, slew the demons and attained heaven.
राजर्षिब्राह्मणैः कार्यं देवविप्रादिपूजनम् । अश्वमेधेन यष्टब्यं महापातकनाशनम् ॥ १,१०८.
Kings, sages, and brahmins should worship the gods and learned priests; one should perform the Aśvamedha sacrifice, which destroys great sins.
उत्तमैः सह साङ्गत्यं पण्डितैः सह सत्कथाम् । अलुब्धैः सह मित्रत्वं कुर्वाणो नावसीदति ॥ १,१०८.
One who associates with the best, converses with the learned, and befriends those free from greed, never comes to ruin.
परीवादं परार्थं च परिहासं परस्त्रियम् । परवेश्मनि वासं च न कुर्वीत कदाचन ॥ १,१०८.
One should never engage in slander, act for another’s gain, indulge in mockery, desire another’s wife, or dwell in another’s house.
परोऽपि हितवाबन्धुर्बन्धुरप्यहितः परः । अहितो देहजो व्याधिर्हितमारण्यमौषधम् ॥ १,१०८.
Even a stranger who is helpful is a friend, and a relative who is harmful is an outsider; a disease arising in the body is an enemy, while a healing herb from the forest is a friend.
स बन्धुर्यो हिते युक्तः स पिता यस्तु पोषकः । तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः स देशो यत्र जीव्यते ॥ १,१०८.
He alone is a friend who acts for one’s welfare; he is a father who provides nourishment; that is a true friend in whom there is trust; that is a land where one can live.
स भृत्यो यो विधेयस्तु तद्बीजं यत्प्ररोहति । सा भार्या या प्रियं ब्रूते स पुत्रो यस्तु जीवति ॥ १,१०८.
He is a servant who is obedient; that is a seed which sprouts; she is a wife who speaks kindly; he is a son who is alive.
स जीवति गुणा यस्य धर्मो यस्य स जीवति । गुणधर्मविहीनो यो निष्फल तस्य जीवनम् ॥ १,१०८.
He lives who possesses virtues; he lives who has righteousness; but one devoid of virtue and righteousness, his life is fruitless.
सा भार्या या गृहे दक्षा सा भार्याया प्रियंवदा । सा भार्या या पतिप्राणा सा भार्या या पतिव्रता ॥ १,१०८.
She is a wife who is skilled at home, who speaks kindly, who regards her husband as her life, and who is devoted to her husband.
नित्य स्नाता सुगन्धा च नित्यं च प्रियवादिनी । अल्पभुक्ताल्पभाषी च सततं मङ्गलैर्युता ॥ १,१०८.
She is always bathed, fragrant, ever speaks pleasantly, eats little, speaks little, and is always adorned with auspicious marks.
सततं धर्मबहुला सततं च पतिप्रिया । सततं प्रियवक्री च सततं त्वृतुकामिनी ॥ १,१०८.
She is always abundant in virtue, ever devoted to her husband, always speaks sweetly, and always desires union at the proper time.
एतदादिक्रियायुक्ता सर्वसौ भाग्यवर्धिनी । यस्येदृशी भवेद्भाय्या स देवेन्द्रोन मानुषः ॥ १,१०८.
A wife endowed with such qualities as these increases all prosperity; the man whose wife is like this is like Indra among men.
यस्य भार्या विरूपाक्षी कश्मला कलहप्रिया । उत्तरोत्तरवादा स्या सा जरा न जरा जरा ॥ १,१०८.
A wife who is ugly-eyed, impure, fond of quarrels, and always argumentative—she is old age, not old age, but truly old age.
यस्य भार्या श्रितान्यञ्च परवेश्माभिकाङ्क्षिणी । कुक्रिया त्यक्तलज्जा च सा जरा न जरा जरा ॥ १,१०८.
A wife who seeks another, desires another’s house, acts wickedly, and is shameless—she is old age, not old age, but truly old age.
यस्य भार्या गुणज्ञा च भर्तारमनुगामिनी । अल्पाल्पेन तु सन्तुष्टा सा प्रिया न प्रिया प्रिया ॥ १,१०८.
A wife who knows virtue, follows her husband, and is content with little—she is dear, not merely dear, but truly dear.
दुष्टा भार्या शठं मित्रं भृत्यश्चोत्तरदायकः । ससर्पे च गृहे वासोमृत्युरेव न संशयः ॥ १,१०८.
An evil wife, a deceitful friend, a servant who answers back, and a snake in the house—these are surely death, without doubt.
त्यज दुर्जनसंसर्गं भज साधुसमागमम् । कुरु पुण्यमहोरात्र स्मर नित्यमनित्यताम् ॥ १,१०८.
Avoid the company of the wicked, seek the association of the good, perform virtuous deeds day and night, and always remember impermanence.
व्यालीकण्ठप्रदेशाह्यपि च फणभृद्भाषणा या च रौद्री या कृष्णा व्याकुलागी रुधिरनयनसंव्याकुला व्याघ्रकल्पा । क्रोधे यैवोग्रवक्त्रा स्फुरदनलशिखा काकजिह्वा कराला सेव्या न स्त्री विदग्धा परपुरगमना भ्रान्तचित्ता विराक्त ॥ १,१०८.
A woman who is fierce as a serpent, dark, agitated, with bloodshot eyes, tiger-like, whose face is terrible in anger, whose tongue is sharp as a crow’s, and who is cruel—such a woman, skilled in intrigue, wandering to other men’s houses, with a disturbed mind and lacking affection, should not be served.
सक्तिः सुतोके सुकृतं कृतघ्ने शतिं च वह्नौ (सीतापहौ ह्यतपयैव)?हैमे । उत्पद्यते दैववशात्कदाचिद्वेश्यासु रागो न भवेत्कदाचित् ॥ १,१०८.
Power may arise in a child, virtue in one who is ungrateful, and a hundredfold fire in gold; sometimes, by fate, passion arises for courtesans, and sometimes it does not.
भुजङ्गमे वेश्मनि दृष्टिदृष्टे व्याधौ चिकित्साविनिवर्तिते च । देहे च बाल्यादिवयोऽन्विते च काला वृतोऽसौ लभते धृतिं कः ॥ १,१०८.
Who can remain steadfast when a snake is seen in the house, when disease resists treatment, or when the body is afflicted by childhood or old age, all at the appointed time?
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १०९ सूत उवाच । आपदर्थे धनं रक्षेद्दारान्रक्षेद्धनैरपि । आत्मानं सततं रक्षेद्दारैरपि धनैरपि ॥ १,१०९.
Sūta said: In times of trouble, one should protect wealth; one should protect one's spouse even with wealth; and one should always protect oneself, even at the cost of spouse or wealth.
त्यजेदकं कुलस्यार्थे ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् । ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥ १,१०९.
One should abandon an individual for the sake of the family, the family for the sake of the village, the village for the sake of the country, and the earth itself for the sake of the self.
वरं हि नरके वासो न तु दुश्चरिते गृहे । नरकात्क्षीयते पाप कुगृहान्न निवर्तते ॥ १,१०९.
It is better to dwell in hell than in a house of wicked conduct; sin is exhausted in hell, but not in a house of evil.
चलत्येकेन पादेन तिष्ठत्येकेन बुद्धिमान् । न परीक्ष्य परं स्थानं पूर्वमायतनं त्यजेत् ॥ १,१०९.
The wise man moves forward with one foot while standing with the other; he does not abandon his former place before examining the next.
त्यजेद्देशमसद्वृत्तं वासं सोपद्रवं त्यजेत् । त्यजेत्कृपणराजानं मित्रं मायामयं त्यजेत् ॥ १,१०९.
One should abandon a land of bad conduct, a dwelling full of trouble, a miserly king, and a friend who is deceitful.
अर्थेन किं कृपणहस्तगतेन केन ज्ञानेन किं बहुशठाग्रहसंकुलेन । रूपेण किं गुणपराक्रमवर्जितेन मित्रेण किं व्यसनकालपराङ्मुखेन ॥ १,१०९.
What use is wealth in the hands of a miser? What use is knowledge mixed with much cunning? What use is beauty without virtue and valor? What use is a friend who turns away in times of distress?
अदृष्टपूर्वा बहवः सहायाः सर्वे पदस्थस्य भवन्ति मित्राः । अर्थैर्विहीनस्य पदच्युतस्य भवत्यकाले स्वजनोऽपि शत्रुः ॥ १,१०९.
Many who were never seen before become friends to one in power; but when deprived of wealth and position, even one's own kin become enemies at the wrong time.
आपत्सु मित्रं जानी याद्रणे शूरं रहः शुचिम् । मार्या च विभवे क्षीणे दुर्भिक्षे च प्रियातिथिम् ॥ १,१०९.
One knows a friend in adversity, a hero in battle, a pure person in solitude, a virtuous wife when wealth is lost, and a dear guest in famine.
वृक्षं क्षीणफलं त्यजन्ति विहगाः शुष्कं सरः सारसानिर्द्रव्यं पुरुषं त्यजन्ति गणिका भ्रष्टं नृपं मन्त्रिणः । पुष्पं पर्युषितं त्यजन्ति मधुपाः दर्ग्ध वनान्तं मृगाः सर्वः कार्यवशाज्जनो हि रमते कस्यास्ति को वल्लभः ॥ १,१०९.
Birds abandon a tree when its fruit is gone; cranes leave a dried-up lake; courtesans forsake a man without means; ministers desert a fallen king; bees leave a faded flower; deer leave a burnt forest; people act according to their interests—who truly belongs to whom?
लुब्धमर्थप्रदानेन श्लाध्यमञ्जलिकर्मणा । मूर्खं छन्दानुवृत्त्या च याथातथ्येन पण्डितम् ॥ १,१०९.
A miser is pleased by gifts of wealth, a greedy man by respectful gestures, a fool by flattery, and a learned man by truthfulness.
