जात्यन्धबधिरे मूके न दोषः परिवेदने । नष्टे मृते प्रव्रजिते क्लीबे वा पतिते पतौ ॥ १,१०७.
There is no fault in announcing the death of one born blind, deaf, or mute. If the husband is lost, dead, has renounced, is impotent, or fallen, impurity arises.
पञ्चस्वापत्सु नारीणां पतिरन्यो विधीयते । भर्त्रा सहमृता नारी रोमाब्दानि वसेद्दिवि ॥ १,१०७.
For women, if the husband is lost in five calamities, another husband is prescribed. A woman who dies together with her husband dwells in heaven for as many years as there are hairs on her body.
श्वादिदष्टस्तु गायत्त्र्या जपाच्छुद्धो भवेन्नरः । दाह्यो लोकाग्निना विप्रश्चाण्डालाद्यैर्हतोऽग्निमान् ॥ १,१०७.
If a man is bitten by a dog or similar animal, he becomes purified by reciting the Gāyatrī; a Brāhmaṇa who is burned by the fire of the world or killed by outcastes and the like, is possessed of fire.

After washing those bones with milk, he should burn them in his own fire with mantras; but if death occurs abroad, he should make and burn a figure of kuśa grass.

Spreading a black antelope skin, he should place six hundred palāśa leaves; placing a śamī twig at the penis, he should put the lower fire-stick at the testicles.
कण्डं दक्षिणहस्ते तु वामहस्ते तथोपभृत् । पार्श्वे तूलूखलं दद्यात्पृष्ठे तु मुसलं ददेत् ॥ १,१०७.
He should place the pestle in the right hand, and the mortar in the left; the mortar should be at the side, and the pestle at the back.
उरे निःक्षिप्य दृषदं तण्डुलाज्यतिलान्मुखे । श्रोत्रे च प्रोक्षणीं दद्यादाज्यस्थालीं च चक्षुषोः ॥ १,१०७.
He should place a stone on the chest, rice, ghee, and sesame in the mouth; in the ears he should put a sprinkling spoon, and a ghee-ladle at the eyes.
कर्णे नेत्रे मुखे घ्राणे हिरण्यशकलान् क्षिपेत् । अग्निहोत्रोपकरणाद्ब्रह्मलोकगतिर्भवेत् ॥ १,१०७.
He should place pieces of gold in the ears, eyes, mouth, and nose; by the use of the implements of the agnihotra, the path to the world of Brahmā is attained.
असौ स्वर्गाय लोकाय स्वाहेत्याज्याहुतिः सकृत् । हंससारसक्रौञ्चानां चक्रवाकं च कुक्रुटम् ॥ १,१०७.
With the offering of ghee, saying 'This is for the heavenly world, svāhā,' once; for the haṃsa, sāras, krauñca, cakravāka, and kukruṭa birds.
मयरमेषघाती च अहोरात्रेण शुध्यति । पक्षिणः सकलान्हत्वा अहोरात्रेण शुध्यति ॥ १,१०७.
One who kills a mayara, ram, or goat is purified in a day and night; having killed any birds, one is purified in a day and night.
सर्वांश्चतुष्पदान्हत्वा अहोरात्रो षितो जपेत् । शूद्रं हत्वा चरेत्कृच्छ्रमतिकृच्छ्रं तु वैश्यहा । क्षत्त्रं चान्द्रायणं विप्रं द्वाविंशात्रिंशमाहरे (वहे) त् ॥ १,१०७.
Having killed any quadruped, one should recite for a day and night; having killed a Śūdra, one should perform the kṛcchra penance, for killing a Vaiśya, the atikṛcchra; for a Kṣatriya, the cāndrāyaṇa; for a Brāhmaṇa, twenty-two or thirty-three (days of penance).
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १०८ सूत उवाच । नीतिसारं प्रवक्ष्यामि अर्थशास्त्रादिसंश्रितम् । राजादिभ्यो हितं पुण्यमायुः स्वर्गादिदायकम् ॥ १,१०८.
Sūta said: I will declare the essence of ethics, drawn from the Arthaśāstra and similar texts, beneficial and meritorious for kings and others, bestowing long life, heaven, and more.
सद्भिः सङ्गं प्रकुर्वीत सिद्धिकामः सदा नरः । नासद्भिरिहलोकाय परलोकाय वा हितम् ॥ १,१०८.
A man who desires success should always associate with the virtuous; nothing good comes in this world or the next from associating with the wicked.
वर्जयेत्क्षुद्रसंवादमदुष्टस्य तु दर्शनम् । विरोधं सह मित्रेण संप्रीतिं शत्रुसेविना ॥ १,१०८.
One should avoid trivial conversation, seeing the wicked, conflict with a friend, and intimacy with one who serves enemies.
मूर्खशिष्योपदेशेन दुष्टस्त्रीभरणेन च । दुष्टानां संप्रयोगेण पण्डितोऽप्यवसीदति ॥ १,१०८.
Even a learned man is ruined by instructing a foolish student, maintaining a wicked wife, or associating with the wicked.
ब्राह्मणं बालिशं क्षत्त्रमयोद्धारं विशं जडम् । शूद्रमक्षरसंयुक्तं दूरतः परिवर्जयेत् ॥ १,१०८.
One should avoid from afar a childish Brāhmaṇa, a Kṣatriya who flees battle, a dull Vaiśya, and a Śūdra who knows letters.
कालेन रिपुणासन्धिः काले मित्रेण विग्रहः । कार्यकारणमाश्रित्य कालं क्षिपति पण्डितः ॥ १,१०८.
At the proper time, one makes peace with an enemy, and at the proper time, conflict with a friend; the wise act according to the requirements of the time.
कालः पचति भूतानि कालः संहरते प्रजाः । कालः सुप्तेषु जागर्ति कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥ १,१०८.
Time ripens all beings, time withdraws all creatures; time is awake when all sleep, for time is indeed insurmountable.
कालेषु हरते वीर्यं काले गर्भे च वर्तते । कालो जनयते सृष्टिं पुनः कालोऽपि संहरेत् ॥ १,१०८.
In time, strength is taken away; in time, it abides in the womb; time produces creation, and again, time withdraws it.
कालः सूक्ष्मगतिर्नित्यं द्विविधश्चेह भाव्यते । स्थूलसंग्रहचारेण सूक्ष्मचारान्तरेण च ॥ १,१०८.
Time always moves subtly and is considered twofold here: by its gross, collective movement and by its subtle, inner motion.
नीतिसारं सुरेन्द्राय इममूच बृहस्पतिः । सर्वज्ञो येन चेन्द्रोऽभूद्दैत्यान्हत्वाप्नुयाद्दिवम् ॥ १,१०८.
Bṛhaspati spoke this essence of policy to the lord of the gods, by which Indra, becoming all-knowing, slew the demons and attained heaven.
राजर्षिब्राह्मणैः कार्यं देवविप्रादिपूजनम् । अश्वमेधेन यष्टब्यं महापातकनाशनम् ॥ १,१०८.
Kings, sages, and brahmins should worship the gods and learned priests; one should perform the Aśvamedha sacrifice, which destroys great sins.
उत्तमैः सह साङ्गत्यं पण्डितैः सह सत्कथाम् । अलुब्धैः सह मित्रत्वं कुर्वाणो नावसीदति ॥ १,१०८.
One who associates with the best, converses with the learned, and befriends those free from greed, never comes to ruin.
परीवादं परार्थं च परिहासं परस्त्रियम् । परवेश्मनि वासं च न कुर्वीत कदाचन ॥ १,१०८.
One should never engage in slander, act for another’s gain, indulge in mockery, desire another’s wife, or dwell in another’s house.
परोऽपि हितवाबन्धुर्बन्धुरप्यहितः परः । अहितो देहजो व्याधिर्हितमारण्यमौषधम् ॥ १,१०८.
Even a stranger who is helpful is a friend, and a relative who is harmful is an outsider; a disease arising in the body is an enemy, while a healing herb from the forest is a friend.
स बन्धुर्यो हिते युक्तः स पिता यस्तु पोषकः । तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः स देशो यत्र जीव्यते ॥ १,१०८.
He alone is a friend who acts for one’s welfare; he is a father who provides nourishment; that is a true friend in whom there is trust; that is a land where one can live.
स भृत्यो यो विधेयस्तु तद्बीजं यत्प्ररोहति । सा भार्या या प्रियं ब्रूते स पुत्रो यस्तु जीवति ॥ १,१०८.
He is a servant who is obedient; that is a seed which sprouts; she is a wife who speaks kindly; he is a son who is alive.
स जीवति गुणा यस्य धर्मो यस्य स जीवति । गुणधर्मविहीनो यो निष्फल तस्य जीवनम् ॥ १,१०८.
He lives who possesses virtues; he lives who has righteousness; but one devoid of virtue and righteousness, his life is fruitless.
सा भार्या या गृहे दक्षा सा भार्याया प्रियंवदा । सा भार्या या पतिप्राणा सा भार्या या पतिव्रता ॥ १,१०८.
She is a wife who is skilled at home, who speaks kindly, who regards her husband as her life, and who is devoted to her husband.
नित्य स्नाता सुगन्धा च नित्यं च प्रियवादिनी । अल्पभुक्ताल्पभाषी च सततं मङ्गलैर्युता ॥ १,१०८.
She is always bathed, fragrant, ever speaks pleasantly, eats little, speaks little, and is always adorned with auspicious marks.
