असंविख्यातदोषस्तु रहस्यं व्रतमाचरेत् 105.
But if the fault is not publicly known, one should perform a secret vow.
अन्तर्जले विशुद्धे च दत्त्वा गां च पयस्विनीम् 105.
In pure water, after giving a cow that yields milk,
जले जप्त्वा तु जुहुयाच्चात्वारिंशद्घृताहुतीः 105.
One should recite mantras in water and offer forty oblations of ghee.
सुरापः स्वर्णहारी च रुद्रजापी जले स्थितः 105.
One who has drunk liquor, stolen gold, or recited the Rudra in water,
प्राणायामशतं कुर्य्यात्सर्वपापापनुक्त्ये 105.
Should perform a hundred breath-regulations to remove all sins.
कृत्वोपवासं रेतोविण्मूत्राणां प्राशनेद्विजः 105.
A twice-born, having fasted, should taste semen, feces, and urine.
रुद्रैकादशजप्याद्धि पापनाशो भवेद्द्विजैः 105.
By reciting the elevenfold Rudra, destruction of sin is achieved by the twice-born.
न स्पृशन्ति हा पापानि चाशु स्मृत्वा ह्यपोहितः 105.
Sins do not touch him, and he is quickly purified by remembering thus.
ब्रह्मचर्य्यं दया क्षान्तिर्ध्यानं सत्यमकल्कता 105.
Celibacy, compassion, forbearance, meditation, truthfulness, and purity—
स्नानमौनोपवासोज्यास्वाध्यायोपस्थनिग्रहः 105.
Bathing, silence, fasting, offering oblations, self-study, and control of the senses—
पञ्चगव्यं तु गोक्षीरं दधिमूत्रशकृद्घृतम् 105.
Pañcagavya consists of cow's milk, curd, urine, dung, and ghee.
पृथक् सान्तपनैर्द्रव्यैः षडहः सोपवासकः 105.
Separately, with substances that cause purification, for six days, with fasting.
पर्णोदुम्बरराजीवबील्वपत्रकुशोदकैः 105.
With water from leaves of fig, udumbara, lotus, bilva, and kuśa grass.
तप्तक्षीरघृताम्बूनामेकैकं प्रत्यहं पिबेत् 105.
Each day, one should drink, in turn, heated milk, ghee, and water.
एकभक्तेन नक्तेन तथैवायाचितेन च 105.
With a single meal, at night, and likewise with what is obtained by begging.
यथा कथञ्चित्त्रिगुणः प्रजापत्योऽयमुच्यते 105.
In whatever way possible, this is called the triple Prajapatya penance.
कृच्छ्रातिकृच्छ्रं पयसा दिवसानेकविंशतिम् 105.
The atikṛcchra penance is performed with milk for twenty-one days.
पिण्याकाचामतक्राम्बुसक्तूनां प्रतिवासरम् 105.
With oil-cake, pulse, sour gruel, and saktu flour, each day in turn.
एषां त्रिरात्रमभ्यासादेकैकं स्याद्यथाक्रमात् 105.
By practicing each of these for three nights in succession, in order.
तिथिपिण्डांश्चरेद्वृद्ध्या शुक्ले शिख्यण्डसम्मितान् 105.
One should perform tithi-piṇḍa offerings, increasing in number, during the bright fortnight, equal to the number of śikhyaṇḍa birds.
यथाकथञ्चित्पिण्डानां चत्वारिंशच्छतद्वयम् 105.
In whatever way possible, one should perform one hundred and forty piṇḍa offerings.
कृत्वा त्रिषवणं स्नानं पिण्डं चान्द्रायणं चरेत् 105.
Having bathed three times a day, one should perform the cāndrāyaṇa penance with piṇḍa offerings.
अनादिष्टेषु पापेषु शुद्धिश्चान्द्रायणेन तु 105.
For sins not specifically enjoined, purification is indeed by the cāndrāyaṇa penance.
कृच्छ्रकृद्धर्मकामस्तु महतीं श्रियमश्नुते ॥ 105.
One who performs the kṛcchra penance, desiring righteousness, attains great prosperity.
इति श्रागारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे याज्ञवल्क्योक्तप्रायश्चित्तविवेको नाम पञ्चोत्तरशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and fifth chapter, named 'The discernment of expiation as spoken by Yājñavalkya,' in the section on conduct, in the first part of the great Purāṇa called Śrī Garuḍa.
याज्ञवल्क्य उवाच । प्रेता (त) शौचं प्रवक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुध्वं यतव्रताः । ऊनद्विवर्षं निखनेन्न कुर्यादु दकं ततः ॥ १,१०६.
Yājñavalkya said: I will explain the purification rites for the dead; listen, you who are devoted to vows. For one who is less than two years old, one should not perform burial or water-offerings.
आ श्मशानादनुव्रज्य इतरैर्ज्ञातिभिर्युतः । यमसूक्तं तथा जप्यं जपद्भिर्लौकिकाग्निना ॥ १,१०६.
Accompanied by other relatives, following from the cremation ground, the Yama hymn should be recited by those who chant, using ordinary fire.
स दग्धव्य उपेतश्चैदाहिताग्न्यावृतार्थवत् । सप्तमाद्दशमाद्वापि ज्ञातयोऽभ्युपयान्त्यपः ॥ १,१०६.
He should be cremated, and if he was initiated or had sacred fires, with proper rites; on the seventh or tenth day, the relatives approach the water.
अपनः शोशुचदघमनेन पितृदिङ्मुखाः । एवं मातामहाचार्यपत्नीनां चोदकक्रियाः ॥ १,१०६.
The ancestors grieve because of this sin, facing the direction of the fathers; likewise, the water-rites are to be performed for maternal grandfathers, teachers, and their wives.
कामोदकाः पुत्रसखिस्वस्त्रीयश्वशुरर्त्विजः । नामगोत्रेण ह्युदकं सकृत्सिञ्चन्ति वाग्यताः ॥ १,१०६.
Sons, friends, wives, fathers-in-law, and officiating priests, desiring to offer water, pour it once, reciting the name and lineage, with controlled speech.
