After bathing, drinking, sneezing, sleeping, eating, or walking on the road—
When sneezing, spitting, sleeping, putting on clothes, or shedding tears, the gods beginning with Agni remain at the right ear of a Brāhmaṇa.
Thus ends the ninety-seventh chapter, entitled 'The Description of Purification of Substances as Taught by Yājñavalkya,' in the Ācārakāṇḍa of the First Section of the Purva-khaṇḍa of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
Now I shall explain the procedure for giving gifts; listen to me, O virtuous ones.
One should consider as a worthy recipient even more than those, the knower of Brahman who is endowed with austerity.
A gift must not be accepted from one deficient in knowledge and austerity.
One should give daily to a worthy recipient, especially on special occasions.
A cow with golden horns, silver hooves, of good conduct, and adorned with cloth,
A horn made of ten gold pieces, and a hoof made with seven weights,
A calf or a heifer with a golden vessel for feeding,
The giver attains heaven for as many years as there are hairs on the calf.
As long as the two feet and the mouth of the calf are visible at the yoni (birth passage),
In whatever way one gives a cow, or a milking cow, or even a barren cow,
Service such as massaging the weary, caring for the sick, or worship of the gods,
By giving whatever is desired to a twice-born, one attains heaven.
A house, grain, umbrella, garland, tree, vehicle, clarified butter, or water,
The giver of sacred knowledge attains the world of Brahma, which is difficult even for the gods to reach.
Even by selling or by writing (a copy of the Veda), one attains the world of Brahma.
Therefore, by every effort, the collection of Vedic meaning should be undertaken.
One attains merit equal to the gift of sacred knowledge, and twice as much elevation.
This should not be heard by a twice-born; it leads that twice-born downward.
Kusha grass, vegetables, milk, and fragrances may be refused, but not water.
Except for those fallen from virtue among adulterers and their associates, and enemies likewise, one may accept from all, solely for the satisfaction of oneself.
