साहूतश्चाप्यधीयीत सर्वं चास्मै निवेदयेत् 94.
When called upon, he should recite and report everything to him.
दण्डाजिनोपवीतानि मेखलां चैव धारयेत् 94.
He should wear the staff, the deer skin, the sacred thread, and the girdle.
आदिमध्यावसानेषु भवेच्छन्दोपलक्षिता 94.
At the beginning, middle, and end, there should be observance of meter.
कृताग्निकार्य्यो भुञ्जीत विनीतो गुर्वनुज्ञया 94.
Having performed the fire ritual, he should eat, being humble and with the teacher's permission.
ब्रह्मचार्य्यास्थितो नैकमन्नमद्यादनापदि 94.
While observing celibacy, he should not eat a single meal, except in distress.
मधु मांसं तथा स्विन्नमित्यादि परिवर्जयेत् 94.
He should avoid honey, meat, and also cooked food, and so on.
उपनीय ददात्येनामाचार्य्यः स प्रकीर्त्तितः 94.
After the initiation, the teacher gives him that (sacred thread); he is thus designated.
एते मान्या यथापूर्वमेभ्यो माता गरीयसी 94.
These are to be honored as before; among them, the mother is the most venerable.
ग्रहणान्तिकमित्येके केशान्तश्चैव षोडशे 94.
Some say the time is at the taking of the sacred thread, others at the cutting of the hair in the sixteenth year.
ब्रह्मक्षत्त्रविशां काल औपनायनिकः परः 94.
The prescribed time for the initiation differs for Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas.
सावित्रीपतिता व्रात्या व्रात्यस्तोमादृते क्रतोः 94.
One whose Sāvitrī is lost is an outcaste, unless he performs the Vrātyastoma sacrifice.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्त्रिय विशस्तस्मादेते द्विजातयः 94.
Therefore, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas are the twice-born.
वेद एव द्विजातीनां निः श्रेयसकरः परः 94.
For the twice-born, the Veda alone is the supreme means to the highest good.
पितॄन्मधुघृताभ्यां च ऋचोऽधीते हि सोऽन्वहम् 94.
He who studies the Ṛks daily offers to the ancestors with honey and ghee.
सन्तर्पयेत्पितॄन्देवान्सोऽन्वहं हि घृतामृतैः 94.
He should daily satisfy the ancestors and the gods with offerings of ghee and nectar.
इतिहासांस्तथा विद्या योऽधीते शक्तितोऽन्वहम् 94.
Whoever studies the histories and sciences each day, according to his ability,
ते तृप्तास्तर्पयन्त्येनं सर्वकामफलैः शुभैः 94.
Those ancestors, being satisfied, bestow upon him all auspicious rewards of desire.
भूमिदानस्य तपसः स्वाध्यायफलभाग्द्विजः 94.
A twice-born who gives land, performs austerity, or recites the Veda partakes of their fruit.
तदभावेऽस्य तनये पत्न्यां वैश्वानरेऽपि वा ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नोति न चेह जायते पुनः ॥ 94.
If he lacks a son, then through his wife or through the fire, he attains the world of Brahma and is not born again here.

Having completed the stage of studentship, one should marry a woman of good qualities.
अरोगिणीं भ्रातृमतीमसमानार्षगोत्रजाम् 95.
She should be healthy, have brothers, and not belong to the same paternal or maternal lineage.
दशपुरुषविख्याताच्छ्रोत्रियाणां महाकुलात् 95.
She should come from a renowned family of ten generations of learned and noble lineage.
यदुच्यते द्विजातीनां शूद्राद्दारोपसंग्रहः 95.
As for what is said about twice-born men taking a wife from the Śūdra class,
तिस्रो वर्णानुपूर्व्येण द्वे तथैका यथाक्रमम् 95.
There are three, two, and one, respectively, in order, according to the classes.
ब्राह्मो विवाह आहूय दीयते शक्त्यलङ्कृता 95.
The Brāhma marriage is when, after inviting, she is given, adorned according to ability.
यज्ञस्थायर्त्विजे दैवमादायार्षस्तु गोयुगम् 95.
The Daiva marriage is when she is given to a priest officiating at a sacrifice; the Ārṣa is when a pair of cows is accepted.
इत्युक्त्वा चरतां धर्मं सह या दीयतेऽर्थिने 95.
Having spoken thus, the marriage in which she is given to a suitor who will practice righteousness with her,
आसुरो द्रविणादानाद्गान्धर्वः समयान्मिथः 95.
The Āsura marriage is by accepting wealth; the Gāndharva is by mutual agreement.
