इज्याचारो दमोऽहिंसा दानं स्वाध्यायकर्म च 93.
Sacrificial rites, self-control, non-violence, charity, and the practice of self-study—
चत्वारो वेदधर्मज्ञाः परास्रैविद्यमेव वा 93.
These four are known as the duties of those learned in Vedic law, or as the knowledge of Parashara.
ब्रह्मक्षात्त्रियविट्शूद्रा वर्णास्त्वाद्यास्त्रयो द्विजाः 93.
The classes are Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra; of these, the first three are twice-born.
गर्भाधानमृतौ पुंसः सवनं स्पन्दनात्पुरा 93.
The rite of conception is performed for a man at the time of quickening, even before birth.
अहन्येकादशे नाम चतुर्थे मासि निष्क्रमः 93.
On the eleventh day after birth, and in the fourth month, the child emerges.
एवमेनः शमं याति बीजगर्भसमुद्भवम् 93.
Thus, the sin arising from the seed and the womb is pacified.
इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे याज्ञवल्क्योक्तवर्णधर्म्मनिरूपणं नाम त्रिनवतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the ninety-third chapter, entitled 'The Explanation of the Duties of the Castes as Taught by Yajnavalkya,' in the first section called Achara-kanda of the Purva-khanda of the glorious Garuda Mahapurana.
गर्भाष्टमेऽष्टमे वाब्दे ब्राह्मणस्योपनायनम् 94.
The initiation (upanayana) of a Brahmin is to be performed in the eighth year from conception or the eighth year from birth.
उपनीय कुरुः शिष्यं महाव्याहृतिपूर्वकम् 94.
Having initiated the student, the teacher should instruct him, beginning with the great Vyahriti mantras.
दिवा सन्ध्यासु कर्णस्थब्रह्मसूत्र उदड्मुखः 94.
During the day, at the times of twilight, with the sacred thread over the left shoulder, facing east—
गृहीतशिश्रश्चोत्थाय मृद्भिरभ्युद्धृतैर्जलैः 94.
Having risen after relieving himself, he should cleanse himself with water drawn with earth.
अन्तर्जानुः शुचौ देश उपविष्ट उदङ्मुखः 94.
Seated facing east, with knees together, in a clean place—
कनिष्ठादेशिन्यङ्गुष्ठमूलान्यग्रं करस्य च 94.
Touching the bases and tips of the little finger, ring finger, and thumb of the hand—
त्रिः प्राश्यापो द्विरुन्मृज्य खान्याद्भिः समुपस्पृशेत् 94.
He should sip water three times, wipe his mouth twice, and touch the bodily orifices with water.
हृत्कण्ठतालुनाभिस्तु यथासंख्यं द्विजातयः 94.
Touching the heart, throat, palate, and navel, in that order, according to their caste—
स्नानमब्दैवतैर्मन्त्रैर्मार्जनं प्राणसंयमः 94.
Bathing, reciting mantras addressed to the deities of water, purification, and control of the breath—
गायत्त्रीं शिरसा सार्द्धं जपेद्व्याहृतिपूर्विकाम् 94.
He should recite the Gāyatrī together with the vyāhṛtis, bowing his head.
प्राणानायम्य सम्प्रोक्ष्य त्र्यृचेनाब्दैवतेन तु 94.
Having restrained his breath and sprinkled himself, he should recite the three Ṛks addressed to the deity.
सन्ध्यां प्राक् प्रातरेवं हि तिष्ठेदासूर्य्यदर्शनात् 94.
In this way, he should stand for the sandhyā at dawn, before seeing the sun.
ततोऽभिवादयेद्वृद्वानसावहमिति ब्रुवन् 94.
Then, he should respectfully greet the elders, saying, 'I am so-and-so.'
साहूतश्चाप्यधीयीत सर्वं चास्मै निवेदयेत् 94.
When called upon, he should recite and report everything to him.
दण्डाजिनोपवीतानि मेखलां चैव धारयेत् 94.
He should wear the staff, the deer skin, the sacred thread, and the girdle.
आदिमध्यावसानेषु भवेच्छन्दोपलक्षिता 94.
At the beginning, middle, and end, there should be observance of meter.
कृताग्निकार्य्यो भुञ्जीत विनीतो गुर्वनुज्ञया 94.
Having performed the fire ritual, he should eat, being humble and with the teacher's permission.
ब्रह्मचार्य्यास्थितो नैकमन्नमद्यादनापदि 94.
While observing celibacy, he should not eat a single meal, except in distress.
मधु मांसं तथा स्विन्नमित्यादि परिवर्जयेत् 94.
He should avoid honey, meat, and also cooked food, and so on.
उपनीय ददात्येनामाचार्य्यः स प्रकीर्त्तितः 94.
After the initiation, the teacher gives him that (sacred thread); he is thus designated.
एते मान्या यथापूर्वमेभ्यो माता गरीयसी 94.
These are to be honored as before; among them, the mother is the most venerable.
ग्रहणान्तिकमित्येके केशान्तश्चैव षोडशे 94.
Some say the time is at the taking of the sacred thread, others at the cutting of the hair in the sixteenth year.
ब्रह्मक्षत्त्रविशां काल औपनायनिकः परः 94.
The prescribed time for the initiation differs for Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas.
