ऋतधामा च भद्रे (तत्रे) न्द्रस्तारको नाम तद्रिपुः ८७.
O blessed one, Indra, whose abode is righteousness, there is a foe named Tāraka.
त्रयोदशस्य रौच्यस्य मनोः पुत्राम्निबोध मे ८७.
Now hear from me the names of the sons of Raucyamana, the thirteenth Manu.
सुनेत्रः क्षेत्रवृत्तिश्च सुनयो धर्मपो दृढः ८७.
Sunetra, Kṣetravṛtti, Sunaya, Dharmapa, and Dṛḍha.
निर्मोहस्तत्त्वदर्शो च ऋषयः सप्त कीर्त्तिताः ८७.
Nirmoha and Tattvadarśa—these are the seven sages who are renowned.
त्रयस्त्रिंशद्विभेदास्ते देवानां तत्र वै गणाः ८७.
There are thirty-three divisions, those are indeed the groups of the gods there.
मायूरेण च रूपेण घातयिष्यति माधवः ८७.
And Mādhava will slay him, taking the form of a peacock.
उरुर्गभीरो धृष्टश्च तरस्वीग्रा (ग्र) ह एव च तेजस्वी दुर्लभश्चैव भौत्यस्यैते मनोः सुताः ॥ ८७.
Urur, Gabhīra, Dhṛṣṭa, Tarasvī, Graha, Tejasvī, and Durlabha—these are the sons of Bhautiya Manu.
अग्नीध्रश्चाग्निबाहुश्च मागधश्च तथा शुचिः ८७.
Agnīdhra, Agnibāhu, Māgadha, and also Śuci.
चाक्षुषाः कर्मनिष्ठाश्च पवित्रा भ्राजिनस्तथा ८७.
Cākṣuṣa, those devoted to action, the pure, and also the sinless.
शुचिरिन्द्रो महादैत्यो रिपुहन्ता हरिः स्वयम् ८७.
Śuciindra, the great Daitya, the slayer of enemies, is Hari himself.
कृतस्ततः पुराणानि विद्याश्चाष्टादशैव तु ८७.
Then the Purāṇas were composed, and the eighteen branches of knowledge as well.
पुराणं धर्मशास्त्रं च आयुर्वेदार्थशास्त्रकम् ८७.
The Purāṇa, the Dharmaśāstra, Ayurveda, and Arthaśāstra.
इति श्रागारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे मनुतद्वंशनिरूपणं नाम स्पताशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the Śrī Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, in the first section of the Pūrvakhaṇḍa, in the Ācārakāṇḍa, is the eighty-seventh chapter named 'The Account of the Lineage of Manus.'
हरिर्मन्वन्तराण्याह ब्रह्मादिभ्यो हराय च 88.
Hari spoke about the Manvantaras to Brahmā and the others, and also to Hara.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच अत्रस्तोऽमितमायी च चचार पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥ 88.
Markaṇḍeya said: He, fearless and of immeasurable illusion, wandered this earth.
अनग्निमनिकेतं तमेकाहारमनाश्रमम् 88.
He was without fire, without a fixed abode, subsisting on a single meal, and without any hermitage.
पितर ऊचुः स्वर्गापवर्गहे (से)तुत्वाद्वन्धस्तेनानिशं (निमिषं) विना ॥ 88.
The ancestors said: Because heaven and liberation depend on you, we are bound without ceasing, not even for a moment.
गृही समस्तदेवानां पितॄणां च तथार्हणम् 88.
The householder is the one who offers proper honor to all the gods and to the ancestors as well.
स्वाहोच्चारणतो देवान्स्वधोच्चारणतः पितृन् 88.
By uttering 'svāhā' he satisfies the gods, and by uttering 'svadhā' he satisfies the ancestors.
सत्त्वं दैवादृणाद्वन्धमिममस्मदृणादपि 88.
A being is bound by debts to the gods, to the sages, and to us, the ancestors, as well as by its own debts.
अनुत्पाद्य सुतान्देवानसन्तर्प्य पितॄस्तथा 88.
Without producing sons and without properly satisfying the gods and the ancestors,
क्लेशबोधैककं पुत्रं अन्यायेन भवेत्तव 88.
If a son is born through suffering, knowledge, or by unjust means, he becomes yours.
परिग्रहोऽतिदुः खाय पापाया धोगतेस्तथा 88.
Taking a wife out of excessive desire, or through sinful intent, is also condemned.
आत्मनः संशयोपायः क्रियते क्षणमन्त्रणात् 88.
One brings about uncertainty for oneself by acting without proper deliberation, even for a moment.
प्रक्षाल्यतेऽनुदिवसं य आत्मा निष्परिग्रहः 88.
He who is without possessions purifies himself day by day.
अनेकभवसंभूतकर्मपङ्काङ्कितो बुधैः 88.
Marked by the mud of actions accumulated over countless births, as taught by the wise,
पितर ऊचुः किं तु नोपायमार्गोऽयं यतस्त्वं पुत्र वर्त्तसे ॥ 88.
The ancestors said: Yet this is not the path or means by which you, my son, conduct yourself.
पञ्चयज्ञैस्तपोदानैरशुभं नुदतस्तव 88.
By the five sacrifices, by austerity and charity, you drive away what is inauspicious.
एवं न बन्धो भवति कुर्वतः कारणात्मकम् 88.
Thus, bondage does not arise for one who acts with proper motive.
पूर्वकर्म कृतं भोगैः क्षीयते ह्यनिशन्तथा 88.
Indeed, past actions are exhausted through enjoyment, little by little, without ceasing.
