The aged maternal grandfather, and also the supreme maternal grandmother—
And for others as well, may this inexhaustible offering be established.
Thus, in the Śrī Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, in the first section of the Pūrvakhaṇḍa, in the Ācārakāṇḍa, the eighty-fourth chapter named 'The Greatness of Gayā' is concluded.
Having bathed at Pretaśilā and with the nectar of Varuṇa's seat—
Those who have died in our lineage, for whom no destination is known—
Those who have died in the paternal line, and those who have died in the maternal line—
And those in the maternal grandfather's line, for whom no destination is known—
Those who are toothless from birth, and those who were afflicted in the womb—
And those among the relatives whose names and lineages are unknown—for the sake of their deliverance, I offer this oblation.
And those who died by hanging, and those struck down by poison or weapons—
Those who died by fire, and those who were slain by lions or tigers,
And those who were burned by fire, as well as others who were not burned,
Those who have gone to Raurava, Andhatamisra, and Kaalasutra,
Those who have entered the dreadful Asipatra forest and Kumbhipaka,
And those dwelling in the realms of torment among the departed,
Those who have entered the wombs of animals, birds, insects, and reptiles,
Those who have been led to countless places of torment by Yama's decrees,
Who wander among thousands of different births according to their own actions,
Whether relatives or not, or those who were relatives in another birth,
Whatever ancestors of mine exist in the form of departed spirits,
Those born in my paternal lineage, and likewise in my maternal lineage,
Those in my family who lack offerings, deprived of sons and wives,
Those deformed, those in impure wombs, known or unknown in my lineage,
May the gods be witnesses for me, Brahma, Ishana, and others likewise,
I have come to Gaya, O Lord, for the rites of the ancestors, O wielder of the mace,
The great river, the Brahma lake, the imperishable banyan, the radiant rising sun—ah! the summit of Gaya,
Thus ends the eighty-fifth chapter named 'The Glory of Gaya,' in the Achara section of the first part of the revered Garuda Mahapurana.
That stone known as the Preta-shila in Gaya is established in three ways.
The stone, pervaded by all the gods, is upheld by righteousness for prosperity.
For the purpose of uplifting them, the auspicious preta-stone exists.
