तस्मिन्निवर्त्तयेच्छ्राद्धं स्नानं चैव निवर्त्तयेत् 84.
There, one should conclude the śrāddha and also complete the ritual bath.
दक्षिणं मानसं गत्वा मौनी पिण्डादि कारयेत् 84.
Going to the southern Mānasa, remaining silent, one should offer piṇḍa and other rites.
सिद्धानां प्रीतिजननैः पापानां च भयङ्करैः 84.
These acts bring joy to the perfected beings and cause fear among the sinful.
नाम्ना कनखलं तीर्थं त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् 84.
The sacred place named Kanakhala is renowned in the three worlds.
तत्र स्नात्वा दिवं याति श्राद्धं दत्तमथाक्षयम् 84.
Bathing there, one attains heaven, and the śrāddha offered becomes imperishable.
कव्यवाहस्तथा सोमो यमश्चैवार्य्यमा तथा 84.
Kavyavāha, Soma, Yama, and Aryaman likewise,
आगच्छन्तु महाभागा युषमाभी रक्षितास्त्विह 84.
May these illustrious ones come here, protected by you all.
तेषां पिण्डप्रदानार्थमागतोऽस्मि गयामिमाम् 84.
For the purpose of offering piṇḍa to them, I have come to this Gaya.
गदाधरं ततः पश्येत्पितॄणामनृणामनृणो भवेत् 84.
Then one should behold Gadādhara; by doing so, one becomes free from debts to ancestors.
आत्मानं तारयेत्सद्यो दश पूर्वान्दशापरान् 84.
One immediately liberates oneself, ten ancestors before and ten after.
धर्मारण्यं मतङ्गस्य वाप्यां पिण्डादिकृद्भवेत् 84.
In the forest of Dharma or at the pond of Mataṅga, one should perform piṇḍa and related rites.
राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां फलं स्याद्ब्रह्मतीर्थके 84.
At the Brahma tīrtha, the fruit equals that of the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices.
कूपोदकेन तत्कार्य्यं पितॄणां दत्तमक्षयम् 84.
By using water from a well, the offering made to the ancestors becomes imperishable.
कृत्वा श्राद्धादिकं पिण्डं मध्ये वै यूपकूपयोः 84.
Having performed śrāddha and piṇḍa between the two sacrificial wells,
तेषां सेवनमात्रेण पितरो मोक्षगामिनः 84.
By merely serving them, the ancestors become destined for liberation.
फल्गुतीर्थे चतुर्थेऽहनि स्नात्वा देवादितर्पणम् 84.
At Phalgu Tirtha, on the fourth day, after bathing, one should offer oblations beginning with the gods.
पिण्डान्देहिमुखे व्यासे पंचाग्नौ च पदत्रये 84.
One should offer piṇḍas at the mouth of the Vyāsa, at the five fires, and at the three steps.
श्राद्धं तु नवदेवत्यं कुर्य्याद्द्वादशदैवतम् 84.
Indeed, one should perform the śrāddha for nine deities or for twelve deities.
अत्र मातुः पृथक् श्राद्धमन्यत्र पतिना सह 84.
Here, the śrāddha for the mother is done separately; elsewhere, it is performed together with the husband.
रुद्रपादं नरः स्पृष्ट्वा न चेहावर्त्तते पुनः 84.
Having touched the feet of Rudra, a man does not return here again.
स तत्फलमवाप्नोति कृत्वा श्राद्धं गयाशिरे 84.
He attains that result by performing śrāddha at the summit of Gayā.
पितरो यान्ति देवत्वं नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा 84.
The ancestors attain divinity; about this, there should be no doubt.
अल्पेन तपसा तत्र महापुण्यमवाप्नुयात् 84.
With little austerity there, one may obtain great merit.
नरकस्था दिवं यान्ति स्वर्गस्था मोक्षमाप्नुयुः 84.
Those in hell go to heaven; those in heaven attain liberation.
पिण्डान्दद्यात्पितॄणां च सकलं तारयेत्कुलम् 84.
By offering piṇḍas to the ancestors, one saves the entire lineage.
एकस्मिन् भोजिते विप्र कोटिर्भवति भोजिताः 84.
When a single brāhmaṇa is fed, it is as if a crore have been fed.
अक्षयान्लभते लोकान्कुलानामुद्धरेच्छतम् 84.
He attains inexhaustible worlds and uplifts a hundred families.
यजेत वाश्वमेधेन नीलं वा वृषमुत्सृजेत् 84.
Or one may perform an Aśvamedha sacrifice, or release a blue bull.
मम नाम्ना गयाशीर्षे पिण्डनिर्वपणं कुरु 84.
In my name, perform the offering of piṇḍas at the summit of Gayā.
श्रुत्वा वणिग्गयाशीर्ष प्रेतराजाय पिण्डकम् 84.
Hearing this, the merchant offered a piṇḍa at Gayāśīrṣa to the Lord of the Dead.
