यत्र माहेश्वरी धारा श्राद्धी तत्रानृणो भवेत् 83.
Where the Maheśvarī stream flows, there the performer of śrāddha becomes free from debt.
अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति श्राद्धी प्रायाद्दिवं नरः 83.
By performing śrāddha, one attains the fruit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and goes to heaven.
रविपादे पिण्डदानात्पतितोद्धारणं भवेत् 83.
By offering piṇḍa at the foot of the sun, the fallen are rescued.
कांक्षन्ते पितरः पुत्रान्नरकाद्भयभीरवः 83.
The ancestors, fearful of hell, long for sons.
गयाप्राप्तं सुतं दृष्ट्वा पितॄणामुत्सवो भवेत् 83.
When a son arrives at Gayā, it becomes a festival for the ancestors.
आत्मजो वा तथान्यो वा गयाकूपे यदा तदा 83.
Whenever a son or another relative is present at the Gayā well,
पुण्डरीकं विष्णुलोकं प्राप्नुयात्कोटितीर्थगः 83.
Whoever bathes at Koṭitīrtha attains Puṇḍarīka and the world of Viṣṇu.
सावतीर्णा गयाक्षेत्रे पितॄणां तारणाय हि 83.
She descended into the field of Gayā for the deliverance of the ancestors.
एकविंशतिवंश्यान्स तारयेन्नात्र संशयः 83.
He delivers twenty-one generations; there is no doubt about this.
तानेव भोजयेद्विप्रान्ब्रह्मणा ये प्रकल्पिताः 83.
He should feed those very Brahmins who are appointed by Brahma.
ब्रह्मप्रकल्पितं स्थानं विप्रा ब्रह्मप्रकल्पपिताः 83.
The place established by Brahma, and the Brahmins established by Brahma.
तर्पयेत्तु गयाविप्रान्हव्यकव्यैर्विधानतः 83.
He should satisfy the Brahmins of Gaya with offerings of oblations and food, according to the prescribed method.
यः करोति वृषोत्सर्गं गयाक्षेत्रे ह्यनुत्तमे 83.
Whoever performs the release of the bull in the most excellent field of Gaya—
आत्मनोऽपि महाबुद्धिर्गयायां तु तिलैर्विना 83.
Even a person of great wisdom, without sesame seeds at Gaya—
यावन्तो ज्ञातयः पित्र्या बान्धवाः सुहृदस्तथा 83.
As many relatives, ancestors, kinsmen, and friends as there are—
रामतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा गोशतस्याप्नुयात्फलम् 83.
A man who bathes at the Rama Tirtha attains the fruit of giving a hundred cows.
निश्चिरासङ्गमे स्नात्वा ब्रह्मलोकं नयेत्पितॄन् 83.
Bathing at the confluence of Nishcira leads one's ancestors to the world of Brahma.
महाकौश्यां समावासादश्वमेधफलं लभेत् 83.
By residing at Mahakaushya, one obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
समीपे त्वग्निधारेति विश्रुता कपिला हि सा 83.
Nearby is the place called Agnidha; that is indeed the famous Kapila.
श्राद्धी कुमारधारायामश्वमेधफलं लभेत् 83.
One who performs a śrāddha at Kumāradhārā attains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
सोमकुण्डे नरः स्नात्वा सोमलोकं च गच्छति 83.
A man who bathes in the Soma Kunda goes to the world of Soma.
धौतपापो नरो याति प्रेतकुण्डे च पिण्डदः 83.
A man purified of sin, who gives offerings at the Preta Kunda, departs.
एवमादिषु तीर्थेषु पिण्डदस्तारयेत्पितॄन् 83.
In such holy places, one who gives offerings delivers his ancestors.
इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे गयामाहात्म्यं नाम त्र्यशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Garuda Mahapurana, in the Purva Khanda, in the section called Achara Kanda, the eighty-third chapter named 'The Greatness of Gaya' ends.
उद्यतस्तु गयां गन्तुं श्राद्धं कृत्वा विधानतः 84.
One who sets out to go to Gaya, having performed the śrāddha according to the prescribed method—
ततो ग्रामान्तरं गत्वा श्राद्धशेषस्य भोजनम् 84.
Then, having gone to another village, he should partake of the remainder of the śrāddha meal.
गृहाच्चलितमात्रस्य गयायां गमनं प्रति 84.
As soon as one leaves home with the intention of going to Gaya,
मुण्डनं चोपवासश्च सर्वतीर्थेष्वयं विधिः 84.
Shaving the head and fasting are prescribed at all sacred places.
दिवा च सर्वदा रात्रौ गयायां श्राद्धकृद्भवेत् 84.
One who performs śrāddha at Gaya may do so at any time, day or night.
पुनः पुनामहानद्यां श्राद्धी स्वर्गं पितॄन्नयेत् 84.
Again and again, performing śrāddha at the great river leads one's ancestors to heaven.
