समुद्राः सरितः सर्वा वापीकूपह्रदास्तथा 82.
All the oceans, rivers, ponds, wells, and lakes—
ब्रह्महत्या सुरापानं स्तेयं गुर्वंगनागमः 82.
Killing a Brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, and union with a teacher’s wife—
असंस्कृता मृता य च पशुचोरहताश्च ये 82.
Those who die without rites, and those killed by cattle or thieves—
गयायां पिण्डदानेन यत्फलं लभते नरः 82.
The fruit that a man obtains by offering piṇḍa at Gayā—
इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे गयामाहात्म्यं नाम द्व्यशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eighty-second chapter, called 'The Greatness of Gayā,' in the Ācārakāṇḍa of the First Section of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
कीकटेषु गया पुण्या पुण्यं राजगृहं वनम् 83.
In the Kīkaṭa region is holy Gayā, and the sacred forest of Rājagṛha.
मुण्डपृष्ठं तु पूर्वस्मिन्पश्चिमे दक्षिणोत्तरे 83.
Muṇḍapṛṣṭha is to the east, and to the west, south, and north.
पञ्चक्रोशं गयाक्षेत्रं क्रोशमेकं गयाशिरः 83.
The field of Gayā is five krośas; Gayāśira is one krośa.
नगाज्जनार्दनाच्चैव कूपाच्चोत्तरमानसात् 83.
From the mountain Janārdana and from the well of Uttaramānasa—
तत्र पिण्डप्रदानेन पितॄणा परमा गतिः 83.
There, by offering piṇḍa, the ancestors attain the highest state.
गयायां पितृरूपेण देवदेवो जनार्द्दनः 83.
At Gayā, the god of gods, Janārdana, is present in the form of the ancestors.
रथमार्गं गयतीर्थे दृष्ट्वा रुद्रपदादिके 83.
Having seen the chariot path at the Gayā tīrtha, beginning with the Rudra shrine—
दृष्ट्वा पितामहं देवं सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते 83.
Having seen the god Pitāmaha, one is freed from all sins.
तथा गदाधरं देवं माधवं पुरुषोत्तमम् 83.
Likewise, having seen the god Gadādhara, Mādhava, the Supreme Person—
मौनादित्यं महात्मानं कनकार्कं विशेषतः 83.
By observing silence, one attains the great-souled Sun, especially the golden Sun.
ब्रह्माणं पूजयित्वा च ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नुयात् 83.
Having worshipped Brahmā, one attains the world of Brahmā.
सन्ध्यां कृत्वा प्रयत्नेन सर्ववेदफलं लभेत् 83.
By diligently performing the twilight worship, one obtains the fruit of all the Vedas.
सरस्वतीं च सायाह्ने दृष्ट्वा दानफलं लभेत् 83.
By beholding Sarasvatī in the evening, one obtains the fruit of giving gifts.
धर्मारण्यं धर्ममीशं दृष्ट्वा स्यादृणनाशनम् 83.
By seeing the forest of Dharma and the Lord of Dharma, one’s debts are destroyed.
धेनुं दृष्ट्वा धेनुवने ब्रह्मलोकं नयेत्पितॄन् 83.
By seeing the cow in the Cow Forest, one leads one’s ancestors to the world of Brahmā.
कोटीश्वरं चाश्वमेधं दृष्ट्वा स्यादृणनाशनम् 83.
By seeing Koṭīśvara and the Aśvamedha, one’s debts are destroyed.
रामेश्वरं गदालोलं दृष्ट्वा स्वर्गमवाप्नुयात् 83.
By seeing Rāmeśvara, where the mace swings, one attains heaven.
मुण्डपृष्ठे महाचण्डीं दृष्ट्वा कामानवाप्नुयात् 83.
By seeing the great Caṇḍī on Muṇḍapṛṣṭha, one attains one’s desires.
गोमकं गोपतिं देवं पितॄणामनृणो भवेत् 83.
By seeing Gomaka, the lord of cows, the god, one becomes free of debts to the ancestors.
मार्कण्डेयेश्वरं दृष्ट्वा पितॄणामनृणो भवेत् 83.
By seeing Mārkaṇḍeyeśvara, one becomes free of debts to the ancestors.
एतेन किं न पर्य्याप्तं नॄणां सुकृतकारिणाम् 83.
Is this not sufficient for those who perform good deeds?
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि ये समुद्राः सरांसि च 83.
Whatever sacred fords, oceans, and lakes there are on earth—
पृथिव्यां च गया पुण्या गयायां च गयाशिरः 83.
On earth is the holy Gayā, and in Gayā is Gayāśira.
उदीचि कनकानद्यो नाभितीर्थं तु मध्यतः 83.
In the north, among the golden rivers, is Nābhitīrtha in the middle.
कूपे पिण्डादिकं कृत्वा पितॄणामनृणो भवेत् 83.
By performing offerings such as piṇḍa at a well, one becomes free of debts to the ancestors.
