वर्णदाप्त्यपपन्नं हि मणिरत्नं प्रशस्यते 70.
A jewel that possesses brilliance of color is indeed praised.
इति श्रीगारुडे महापुराणे पूर्वखण्डे प्रथमांशाख्ये आचारकाण्डे पद्मरागपरीक्षणं नाम सप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the seventieth chapter, entitled 'Examination of the Padmaraga Gem,' in the first section called Ācārakāṇḍa of the Purva-khaṇḍa of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
दानवाधिपतेः पित्तमादाय भुजगाधिपः 71.

That is where the bile of the lord of the Dānavas, struck by the arm of the lord of serpents, fell.
तस्मिन्मरकतस्थाने यत्किञ्चिदुपजायते 71.
Whatever arises in that place of emerald,
सर्वमन्त्रौषधिगणैर्यन्न शक्यं चिकित्सितुम् 71.
Cannot be cured by any group of mantras or medicines.
अन्यदप्याकरे तत्र यद्दोषैरुपवर्जितम् 71.
There is another form there, which is free from faults.
अत्यन्तहरितवर्णं कोमलमर्चिर्विभेदजटिलं च 71.
It is of an intensely green color, soft, radiant, and with a fibrous appearance.
युक्तं संस्थानगुणैः समरागं गौरवेण न विहीनम् 71.
It possesses proper shape and qualities, is evenly colored, and is not lacking in dignity.
हित्वा च हरितभावं यस्यान्तर्विनिहिता भवेद्दीप्तिः 71.

यच्च मनसः प्रसादं विदधाति निरीक्ष्यमतिमात्रम् 71.

वर्णस्याति विभुत्वाद्यस्यान्तः स्वच्छकिरणपरिधानम् 71.
Whose color is exceedingly splendid, and whose interior is adorned with clear rays.
वर्णोज्ज्वलया कान्त्या सान्द्राकारो विभासया भाति 71.
It shines with vivid color, luster, and a dense form.
शबलकठोरमलिनं रूक्षं पाषाणकर्करोपेतम् 71.
Spotted, hard, impure, rough, and resembling the texture of stone.
यत्सन्धिशोषितं रत्नमन्यन्मरकताद्भवेत् 71.
A gem that is dried at the joints becomes another kind of emerald.
भल्लातकी पुत्रिका च तद्वर्णसमयोगतः 71.
Bhallataka and putrika are so named according to their color.

Putrika, when polished with linen cloth, loses its brilliance.

वज्राणि मुक्ताः सन्त्यन्ये ये च केचिद्द्विजातयः 71.

ऋजुत्वाच्चैव केषाञ्चित्कथञ्चिदुपजायते 71.
In some cases, due to straightness, a certain quality arises.
स्नानाचमनजप्येषु रक्षामन्त्रक्रियाविधौ 71.

दैवपित्र्यातिथेयेषु गुरुसंपूजनेषु च 71.
In rites for gods, ancestors, guests, and in honoring the teacher.
दौषैर्होनं गुणैर्युक्तं काञ्चनप्रतियोजितम् 71.
A gem, free from faults and endowed with qualities, is matched with gold.
तुलया पद्मरागस्य यन्मूल्यमुपजायते 71.
