Those kuruvinda gems that are born in the Ravana Ganga river—
Their color follows accordingly, both in the Mandhra region and elsewhere.
Likewise, those produced from crystal are found in the region known as Tumburu.
Excess of color, heaviness, smoothness, and perfect clarity—
Those that are marked by cracks, holes, dirt, lacking luster, rough, or discolored—
Any gem that, due to defects, displays only a little of its natural brilliance—
Though they may be exceedingly beautiful, some are imitations of the five types.
Those produced in the regions of Kalasha, Purodbhava, Simhala, and Tumburu, as well as the Muktapani area—
Because of the presence of husk, it is called Kalasha; due to a coppery hue, it is known as Tumburu.
Śrīpūrṇaka is so named due to lack of brilliance; the distinction lies only in the sign of its type.
That which is smeared with oil appears so, and one that is much rubbed loses its luster.
Having obtained and examined it according to its qualities, one should discern its nature by weight and merit, even if it is a jewel from the ocean.
If there is doubt, it does not perish; one should test it by rubbing on a touchstone.

Whether it is a diamond or a kuruvinda, it is revealed by this method.
All jewels of the same kind are never of different types; they are of the same color.
A jewel lacking in quality should not be worn, even if it is of a good lineage; only one endowed with virtues is to be accepted.
Just as a single outcaste, coming among twice-born men, can easily destroy even many of them without effort,
Even when placed among rivals, or when behaving carelessly,
The afflictions that arise from faults do not attack him.

A jewel that possesses brilliance of color is indeed praised.
Thus ends the seventieth chapter, entitled 'Examination of the Padmaraga Gem,' in the first section called Ācārakāṇḍa of the Purva-khaṇḍa of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
The lord of serpents took the bile of the lord of the Dānavas.
Then, shining with the radiance of the jewel on his own head, he entered the sky and the ocean.
Then, with the descent of his wings, as if gathering together heaven and earth,
Suddenly, the lord of serpents released it at the foot of a Turushka tree anointed by Surasā.
Immediately after it fell, he passed through the abode of Varāla and came near Ramā.
As it was still falling, Garuḍa seized a portion of that bile.
There, among the grass, moss, and marsh plants where sharp-beaked birds, silk-cotton flowers, and fireflies dwell,
That is where the bile of the lord of the Dānavas, struck by the arm of the lord of serpents, fell.
